Why study media and popular culture? • To critically examine media and popular culture texts. • To examine how media and popular cultural products are made. • To explore what audiences, users and communities understand about and do with these media forms. • To understand media industries and their changing dynamics.


Two modes  OPTION 1: MH109 BA Media Studies  Duration 3 years (BA) or 4 years (BA International)  Involves digital and AV creative practice  Combines with another Arts subject

 OPTION 2: Media & Cultural Studies  Subject within MH101 Arts  Duration 3 years (BA) or 4 years (BA International)  Combines with another Arts subject


First Year  Both: 2 modules in critical media studies  MS: extra two modules in creative practice

 Foundational modules in digital tools and audiovisual production  Combine with two other subjects

 M&CS

 Combine with three other subjects  May take Digital Critical Skills

 Popular second subjects include Computer Science, Marketing, Sociology, Business, and English


Digital Critical Skills: M&CS only • Practical, hands-on digital skills – MD190 Digital Creation Skills • Basics of coding, image and audio editing and digital storytelling

– MD191 Digital Literacy • Understanding of technology, data management, usability, digital rights


Creative practice


Second Year  BOTH: Media Studies research practices and optional modules  MS: Intermediate practice modules in TV studio and Web authoring  One additional subject in Second Year

 Choose Double Honours (30/30) or Major-Minor (40/20)

 M&CS:

 One additional subject in Second Year

 Choose Double Honours (30/30) or Minor (20/40)

 Possibility of pursuing a 10 credit elective stream to broaden intellectual horizons

Third Year • Both: Media and Cultural Industries – preparation for graduation

• MS: Project-based practice capstones: Interactive Project, Short Film or Dissertation • M&CS: Dissertation option in Double Honours • Advanced topics courses in areas such as social media; publics and public discourse; global cinema; virtual animation environments; podcasting; queer media; fandom…. • Carry on with chosen major or minor subject


So where’s that going to take me? • According to the UK Office of National Statistics 2013 report, people with a degree in media have the second highest employment rate in the UK. • Our programme offers the critical thinking, writing, technical, and team building skills that are essential to professions within and outside media, creative and cultural industries. • Media Studies also offers the MA in Critical and Creative Media.
