ALUKA FABRIC RESEARCH FACILITY
THE ALUKA FABRIC RESEARCH FACILITY IS AN INSTITUTION DEDICATED TO TEXTILE RESEARCH TO GIVE SOUTH AFRICANS AN EDGE ON THE EMERGING MARKET OF THE FUTURE OF TEXTILES. THE CONCEPT OF THE BUILDING LIES IN ITS PERFORMANCE. THE BUILDING HAS BEEN DESIGNED IN A WAY FABRIC IS MEANT TO PERFORM. FABRIC IS DESIGNED TO KEEP US WARM/COOL, DRY AND VENTILATED WITHOUT ANY MOVING PARTS.

SITE LOCATION_ THE ALUKA TEXTILE RESEARCH FACILITY IS LOCATED ON SITE 1, THE SITE IS OPPOSITE THE RAILWAY STATION; AND ADJACENT TO THE NEW PUBLIC SQUARE AND AMENITIES BUILDING. THIS PUTS THE BUILDING THE MOST PLACE TO HELP ACTIVATE THE “SALT RIVER URBAN SCHEME” THAT REVOLVES AROUND ACTIVATING THE FRINGE AND CREATING A NEW COMMERCIAL EDGE PHASE 1: TRANSFORMING THE FRINGE STEP 1: RE-PURPOSES ALL UNUSED BUILDINGS/ WAREHOUSES/FACTORIES TO BECOME MULTIFUNCTION BUILDINGS FOLLOWING THE MODEL OF THE MERCHANT HOUSE. COMFORT LEVELS: DAYLIGHTING IS THE PRACTICE OF PLACING WINDOWS OR OTHER OPENINGS AND REFLECTIVE SURFACES SO THAT DURING THE DAY NATURAL LIGHT PROVIDES EFFECTIVE INTERNAL LIGHTING.1 DAYLIGHTING SYSTEMS CAN DRASTICALLY IMPROVE THE INTERNAL LIGHTING QUALITY WHICH IMPROVES OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH. ‘LIGHT IS CRITICAL FOR OUR HEALTH AND WELLBEING. Sun angles/Sun penetration: The building is designed in such a way that it only brings in direct light from the top in summer and the protects the north facing office space from harsh north light with a double skin facade, in winter the is more penetration.
Natural daylighting: Scientists at the Lighting Research Centre (LRC), in Troy, N.Y., for example, have reported that day-lit environments increase occupant productivity and comfort, and provide the mental and visual stimulation necessary to regulate human circadian rhythms.

Sun angles/Sun penetration: The building is design to reduce the time of direct exposure on the east and west facade glazing. This reduces the solar-heat gain.
Sun penetration: The building’s designed in such a way the atrium space allows in east light in the morning and in the west light in the afternoon. These façades have double skin make up using high performance Low-E glazing that insulate and reduce the buildings solar heat gain over the 6hours per side respectively. There is also a constant amount of indirect light from the top.
Light study: This is a lux lighting study. All work surfaces have lux level of about 500 which is recommended for general offices CAD work stations and meeting rooms. This means the would require minimum amounts of artificial light, which helps in creating healthy workspaces.
Render of a the Least effective laboratory: This is the least efficiently lit laboratory which is well lit. The labs glazing all anti-glare film, to give the labs a more pleasant working experience. The room is ventilated through the ceiling. The use of timber creates a warm and more inviting space which also helps with worker productivity.

COOL AND MAKES FOR GOOD COMFORT LEVELS FOR RESORTING TO MECHANICAL HEATING/COOLING/ THE OCCUPANTS TO WORK IN CONSIDERING THE VENTILATION SHOWS POOR DESIGN CONSIDERATION. Solar Chimneys : section through the atrium show solar chimneys and how the intend on cooling the atrium space. Cross ventilation: The laboratories have permeable ceilings that act as the outlet high outlets to let the hot air out.
Solar Chimneys : detailed section through the chimney on the top of a double skin facade. Heating up the inside of the facade gets makes the hot air rise faster.
PASSIVE VENTILATION
Stack ventilation : the atrium is divided into 9 towers and 6/9 of those towers act as Solar Chimneys but are only effective when the sun against them
Wall detail : laboratories are specialised spaces that will require controlled air quality conditions. Incorporating two inlets; 1. An automated ventilation vent that opens/closes depending on the Indoor Air Quality and 2. A manual pop-out window for hot days. The two inlets being open improves the airflow.

THE TEXTILE MERCHANT HOUSE IS ANOTHER BUILDING IN THE SALT RIVER URBAN FABRIC THAT FOLLOWS A THE MODEL OF SMALL MULTIFUNCTION BUILDING. THE BUILDING BEING MULTIFUNCTIONAL THE IT ACCOMMODATED PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT FINANCIAL BRACKETS.

POST INDUSTRIAL CITYURBAN SCHEME
SALT RIVER IS A POST INDUSTRIAL CITY THAT IS AMBIGUOUS AND IS DISCONNECTED BY NATURE. THE URBAN SCHEME SEEKS TO SOLVE THIS ISSUE BY INTRODUCING A NEW PEDESTRIAN INTERFACE THAT WILL CONNECT ONE SALT RIVER TO ITS SURROUNDS INCORPORATING THE NEW PRASA TRAIN SYSTEMS, THE TWO RIVERS URBAN PARK AND THE CITY OF CAPE TOWN NEW BICYCLE LANES.

POSTINDUSTRIAL AGRICULTURAL CITY RIBA COMPETITION
THE POST-INDUSTRIAL AGRICULTURAL CITY IN SALT RIVER WOULD TACKLE THE ISSUE OF FOOD SHORTAGES AND ADAPTIVE LOW-COST HOUSING IN THE CITY ANTICIPATED IN THE NEAR FUTURE. THE PROJECT PROPOSAL IS TO HAVE POD LIKE DISTRICT THAT DOUBLES UP AS A FARM AND LOW COST ADAPTIVE HOUSING.
