SAVING LIVES ADOPTION EVENTS BRING ANIMALS TO THE PEOPLE

ADOPTIONS RULE! The Alliance adoption van, a gift from the Petco Foundation in 2011, continued to bring pets to the people throughout the city.

The Alliance’s high-profile, multi-group adoption events – Adoptapalooza, Maddie’s® Pet Adoption Days, and Whiskers in Wonderland – generated thousands of adoptions in 2014. Over the course of one weekend in May, during our second Maddie’s® Pet Adoption Days, more than 5,000 dogs and cats from 93 NYCarea rescue groups and shelters found new homes. Collectively, the organizations that participated in the event garnered more than $5 million in adoption subsidies. Additionally, Broadway Barks – the annual star-studded adoption spectacular presented by Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore – celebrated its 16th lifesaving year.

Small-scale mobile adoption events, made possible through the use of the Alliance’s adoption van and those of several partner organizations, also boosted adoptions citywide. These local events brought pets to the people in neighborhoods across New York City, raising awareness and increasing the visibility of our partner rescue groups and NYC’s homeless animals.

WHEELS OF HOPE MOVES ANIMALS A STEP CLOSER TO HOME

Moving animals out of crowded Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC)* shelters to partner organizations continues to be our most effective method of saving lives. The Alliance’s Wheels of Hope vans facilitated 13,700 transports in 2014 and moved animals to rescue groups and shelters, adopters, foster caretakers, and veterinary clinics. The Wheels of Hope transported animals and supplies to and from adoption events, and also

transported community cats to and from spay/neuter appointments. In addition, the fleet transported traps to Certified TNR Caretakers who perform Trap-NeuterReturn (TNR). Seven days a week, 52 weeks a year, our Wheels turn to create brighter futures for more Little New Yorkers.

NYC FERAL CAT INITIATIVE BOOSTS CITYWIDE TNR EFFORTS

Expanding TNR efforts throughout NYC is key to reducing cat intake at city shelters.

In 2014, in partnership with the ASPCA and Alley Cat Allies, the Alliance launched a new TNR Certification Training Program aimed at solving the feral cat overpopulation crisis in New York City by increasing the number of individuals trained to perform TNR. The new program offers two different ways to become a Certified TNR Caretaker: through an in-person, hands-on workshop in any of the city’s five boroughs; or by taking the online course. Individuals who become TNR-certified are eligible for a range of free services and resources, including spay/neuter, transportation of cats to and from spay/neuter appointments, trap loans, outreach materials, networking opportunities, and a dedicated NYC Feral Cat Initiative (NYCFCI) help desk. In addition, the Alliance’s NYCFCI provided specialized training in bottle-feeding, kitten-taming, building shelters, improving neighbor relations, and other areas of expertise. As part of our expanding efforts to support the TNR community in New York City, the Alliance continued to provide funding through specialized grants acquired from the ASPCA and a private foundation. These funds were used to pay for spay/neuter, traps, cat shelters, and other TNR-related expenses.

ACC LIVE RELEASE RATE

11,947

This year, in partnership with 150 Alliance Participating Organizations (APOs), we achieved a groundbreaking 87% community-wide Live Release Rate for New York City’s shelter animals. We succeeded in saving 8 out of every 10 lives at ACC in 2014, and we have saved more than 275,000 lives since 2003. Now in our second decade, we continue to tackle the animal overpopulation crisis in New York City by leveraging our leadership role for a strengthened community collaboration. Each of the key initiatives outlined here is implemented in service of our rescue partners, to bolster their operations and help them fulfill their mission (and ours) of saving the lives of homeless animals. In addition, our Helping Pets and People in Crisis program provides essential links in the rescue chain and bridges human and animal welfare services to keep animals safe and with their owners—where they belong. Today New York City is a more humane community than when we began, thanks to our valued partners and supporters who
