About us Lead British International School, located in Gwarinpa, Abuja, was established in September 2007. The school caters for children of pre-primary (early years), primary and secondary school ages. It is a co-educational institution that is fully endowed with professional staff, and fully equipped with modern infrastructures. It is located in a serene environment that is conducive for learning. Our pupils and students think of themselves as future leaders who have the capability to make positive contributions to the society. Lead British International School provides world-class education for children in Nigeria. We foster a love for learning by providing a challenging, rich and broad education. When a child joins the school, he/she will be supported and encouraged to make the most of his/ her own gifts. Our children will also be encouraged to develop the self-confidence they need to take full advantage of opportunities open to them in life, to take reasonable intellectual risks and to tap into the thinking skills which allow them to make sound judgements about the world around them. The school motto is “Knowledge and Self-reliance. This is a result of our concept of bridging the gap between what children learn in school and how to use this knowledge to tackle issues they will come in contact with after school. Education for self-reliance is the learning that is directed towards developing in young people those skills, competencies, understanding and attributes which equip them to be innovative and creative. These skills will equip them to be able to identify, create, initiate and successfully manage personal and/or community businesses and work opportunities including being selfemployed.

Vision & Mission The school vision is to develop Future Leaders and the mission is to provide a range of world-class educational and social experience and environment appropriate to the age, potential and needs of our pupils/students in order to empower them with knowledge needed to be self-reliant in a competitive world. The core values of the school are Discipline, Truthfulness, Self-reliance and Creativity. The school offers a variety of programmes that aim at fully equipping the students for life and these factors make LBIS special. Some of such programmes include: Career and Life Skills Forum once a week for Primary and Secondary sections; Leadership Day (leaders in the community will be invited to give talks) once a term for each section, Film Shows, Excursions, Open Days and Inter-House Sports.

Early Years Programme At the Early Years the focus is on laying a solid foundation and framework on which future learning will be built. This involves inculcating in all our pupils necessary life skills which include reasoning, perseverance, communication, reading, creativity, gross and fine motor skills. These are achieved through delivery of well-planned programmes covering the six learning areas in our curriculum. 1. Communication, Language and Literacy (CLL) 2. Problem solving, Reasoning and Numeracy (PRN) 3. Knowledge and Understanding of the World (KUW) 4. Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) 5. Creative Development (CD) 6. Physical Development (PD) Each of these areas is very important and they are given equal attention.

Academic Structure All subject teachers belong to a Department with a Departmental Head. Each Head organises the department and liaises with the appropriate authority for the smooth running of the department. The different Heads meet regularly with the Head of Standards and Evaluation to review work and progress made in all the departments of the school. LBIS places a lot of emphasis on academic excellence. In this regard teaching/learning programmes are learning friendly and they are geared towards creating a learning atmosphere that is conducive where every learner has access to modern facilities that enhance learning.

Academic Achievement At Lead British International School, the propelling force in the school is academic excellence and so children who consistently perform well are rewarded by publishing their names on the Honours and Merit Rolls. Those students who earn below 60% average in Continuous Assessment Tests and End of Term Examinations are placed on Academic Probation until they work hard enough to get out of probation by making higher than 60% in the following Continuous Assessment Tests or End of Term Examinations. During this time, such under-performing students are placed under stricter supervision of the Guidance Counsellor and the Special Needs teachers. 14

Self-Discipline, Integrity, Self-Reliance & Creativity One of the core values of the school is self-discipline. Therefore we urge all parents, students and pupils to carefully read through the Handbook for Parents and Students. We have a system of reward and punishment for all students. We know that self-discipline develops self-confidence and so, we are out to develop these sterling virtues in our pupils and students. The next of our core values is Integrity. We want to engender the virtue of Integrity on the impressionable young minds. The value of this virtue will see them through life. This virtue entails being truthful at all times. In this regard, we reward students who consistently display this virtue on the school campus and outside.

16

We offer education for life. We inculcate into our students the value of Self-Reliance. At the end of the full course in our school, we can assure the parents and the world that our products can survive anywhere on the globe. Creativity is one thing that is not well developed in most human beings. Every human being is endowed with some form of creativity. We, through various activities envisioned, will help each child to develop the potential creative energy in them.

The British National Curriculum The British National Curriculum is organised into blocks of years called “Key Stages”. There are four key stages as well as a “Foundation Stage”. The “Foundation Stage” covers education for children before they reach five (which is the compulsory school age).

Key Stages Key Stage 1: Years 1-2 (Primary 1-2) Ages 5-7 Key Stage 2: Years 3-6 (Primary 3-6) Ages 7-11 Key Stage 3: Years 7-9 (JS 1-3) Ages 11-14 Key Stage 4: Years 10-11 (SS 1-2) Ages 16 and above Pre-University

Pre-University At Year 12 (SS 3) ages 16 and above, the students are ready for all the examinations which include:

1. West African Senior School Certificate of Education (WASSCE) by West African Examinations Council (WAEC). 2. Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) by National Examinations Council (NECO). 3. Joint Admissions and Matriculations Examinations (JAME) by Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). 4. International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Cambridge Examinations. 5. Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) I and II. 6. Test of English for Foreign Learners (TOEFL). 7. Cambridge Advanced Level Certificate Examinations. 18

Special Education Needs (SEN) Some children have special needs. They may have learning difficulties that make learning much harder for them when compared with most children of the same age. SEN includes children with a range of physical and/or sensory difficulties with emotional and behavioural challenges or difficulties with speech, language or social interaction. These children may need to be helped more than other children of the same age. And perhaps in different ways, LBIS has professional teachers to ensure that this group is able to attain their highest potential.

Academic Support Programme Although small class sizes (which we practise) provide close attention and personal recognition, some pupils still need special help to overcome learning difficulties. This is particularly important in Literacy and Numeracy at the time the child’s full potential is not reached. Our learning support centre operates on the basis that effective learning takes place only when satisfaction in participation exists and the child must be a major player for effective learning to take place. LBIS Special Needs Centre is managed by a team of trained Special Education Needs teachers. Students who experience difficulties in different subjects are enrolled into the After-School Academic Support Programme.
