An Update to the Community Back to School Issue 2013
A Message from the Superintendent I hope everyone is enjoying a relaxing summer but the start of school is just around the corner. We will soon be right back in the swing of things as you can see looking at the school events listed in this issue for August and September. As we get closer to the start of school I want to make you aware of some items: In order to adopt a more consistent dress code in the 6-12 building, the Middle School policy will now require that all shorts, skirts, and dresses must come to the top of the knee. There is a slight change in time schedules and they are listed: Students are to be dropped off no earlier than 7:40 a.m. at the 6-12 Building High School - 1st period will begin at 7:50 a.m. There is no home room this year, so if students arrive after the 7:50 a.m. bell rings, they will be counted as tardy. Dismissal is at 2:23 p.m. The Middle School will begin also at 7:50 a.m. and dismiss at 2:25 p.m. Maysville Elementary students are to be dropped off no earlier than 8:35 a.m. Busses will unload at this time, as well. Classes are from 8:55 a.m. to 3:10 p.m.
Maysville P.T.O. Parents have a great opportunity to be part of an excellent organization that exists and works solely to provide extra benefits for your children in their classrooms. Maysville Elementary’s P.T.O. meets monthly to plan for activities and for fundraising events in order to fund those projects/activities. All are welcome and encouraged to attend these meetings, held on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. Check the school calendar for the date each month. There are many ways you can help: For example: The Fall Harvest - volunteers are needed to help set up, pop corn, work at a station and to clean up; The Holiday Shop -you can help price items, set up the room, help students shop, help restock items and clean the room up. The Spring Carnival - you can help by making treats, pop corn, make cotton candy, help with games; The Book Fair - help students shop. You could help with fundraisers throughout the year (see next page) by passing out order forms, collecting tickets and money from students. If you would prefer to work from home, you could count tickets for envelopes and count papers for the classrooms. The P.T.O. would welcome your help. Watch for more information to be sent home at the beginning of the school year.
A five-week rotating lunch and breakfast menu will be available to all students of the district. The menu will be distributed to all students of the district at the beginning of the school year and will be featured on a convenient 8 ½ X 11 magnet. Calories, fat and sodium content, vegetable subgroups, fruit varieties, whole grains, serving sizes, grade levels, etc. were all considered in planning the menu. The menu will offer more fresh fruit and new vegetable items for the upcoming school year. Students will once again be able to take advantage of a convenient grab-n-go type breakfast. Breakfast will be offered free of charge daily to all students of the district. Items such as whole grain breakfast bars, muffins, pop tarts, waffles, pancakes, breakfast wraps, cheese sticks, PBJ on whole grain bread, graham crackers, yogurt, 100% juice, and several varieties of milk are among those items being offered for breakfast. Over 89,000 free student breakfasts were served district wide during the 2012-2013 school year, indicating a 33% increase in student breakfasts served, compared to the 2011-2012 school year. The 6/12 building will again offer a daily salad bar. The Middle School and High School students may choose the salad bar instead of the regular menu offered on any particular day. Salad bar items included ham, turkey, cheese, boiled egg, lettuce, broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, beans, and peas. Fruit or juice, crackers and milk varieties are also included with the salad bar. Student lunch prices will be $2.00 at the Elementary Building and $2.25 at the Middle School and High School levels. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the school breakfast and lunch programs.
PTO Fundraisers Proceeds benefit Maysville Students FALL FUNDRAISER This year the PTO will be selling Stone House Mixes/Dips. They have a wide assortment of dips from savory ones to dessert. Each dip is $5. and the PTO receives 50% of all sales.
WHERE’S THE BEEF? RAFFLE Winner of this raffle, held mid-year, receives a side of beef - roughly 325 lbs. of meat cut into steaks, roasts, hamburger, etc. AND a 7.5 cubicfoot freezer to put it in!
MARKET DAY The MES Market Day is an ongoing fundraiser that makes frozen food items available to parents at great prices. The school earns 10% of the sales. Parents can shop from a flier or online at MARKETDAY.COM. Your order will be boxed and ready for you to pick up one Saturday each month. Each month’s sale is run by a different grade level and the profits they earn provides money for good behavior rewards, classroom supplies and books.
