CITY ON RAILS
TURNING RAILWAY TO GREENWAYS “If you plan a City for cars and traffic, you get cars and traffic. If you plan for people and places, you get people and places.” -Fred Kent “A Developed Country is not a place where the poor have cars. It is where the rich use Public Transportation” -Mayor of Bogota Final Year Thesis / Panvel Railway Station / Transit hub / Redevelopment / 2019 / Shivaji University Mentor: Ar. Dadasaheb Chougule
What does the first thing comes to your mind when you hear the term “Mumbai railways”. Crowd? Unclean tracks and platforms? Slum dwellers residing at Railway lands? The condition of Mumbai Rail tracks are horrible. I wanted to put a new face in people’s mind. Imagine a snake like corridor built above rails expanding in the flow of the tracks on the map of the Mumbai. How much of the space and area would it give to Mumbai for development? It would also have some part of housing for the slum dwellers who have resided at railway lands and is getting hard to move them day by day. A corridor flowing through Mumbai rails with amenities like malls, shopping centres, public realms, parking, etc. People could even walk or cycle over stations. A green corridor is really what Mumbai needs now in this day of modernization and Sustainibility. “When you walk up and down this city, you even won’t be aware you’re on a platform over all the trains. When this is achieved, “People will have no idea there are even trains underneath.”

THE IDEA
Current scenario: a city deprived of recreational space - less than 1 sq m/person of open public space in a city of over 20 million residents. And where can we find 100 acres of free land for open and green spaces? THE RAILWAYS. The railways run through the city like a river: long & linear holding the city together like a spine! The Greenway created above and adding value to the existing railway lines, an environment friendly green transport + leisure solution could turn Bombay into a truly 21st century civty in terms of green space & connectivity. So , the design concept was simple, the greenway would act as a creeper growing all over city and flowing through railway lines. The stations would act as a transit hub and commercial platforms.
By not disturbing the organic flow of the creeper, i decided to design the station in a organic shape. Which would like a unusual flower blooming over the greenway and also a portal to travel around. The Railway station has always been the heart of the city and millions on people commute railways daily. So lets spend the people’s money where it is actually needed.

Skribbled first with a tangly creeper design over the greenway connected with the commercial complex over the railway station.
Keeping the Portal shape in mind , the commercial complex shape was determined.
Raised the portal a bit to put it in a hierarchy manner.

MAYUR KALE PORTFOLIO
The only true everyday ‘public spaces’ that Bombay has presently are the footpaths; brimming with activity, but not satisfying the function they were originally meant to perform. Foot paths have become informal spaces with hawkers restricting the movement of pedestrians. Mumbai streets have practically no cycling tracks, or lanes for people using non-motorized modes of transport.
The Greenway allows for a multiplicity of uses that a modern city like Bombay should expect from its public spaces: the railways double up as a vibrant park for commuters and visitors, cultural and retail re-invigoration, E-W connectivity, environmental restoration, green transport.v

THE LIVING STAIRWAY “Even Incomplete, You see the potential for a glorious public space. Third Year Studio / Karad Ghat / Public Stairway / Redevelopment / 2017 / Shivaji University Mentor: Ar. Udayan Kulkarni
A redevelopment project for the busiest public staircway in Karad, Maharshtra, which is always been more than a stairway for the people , the stairs leads down directly to the Krishna river and ends at its bank. People come, walk, run, exercise, sit and eat. It is a multi-use staiway, the aim was to make it more wide and lenient to use for people.

22
MAYUR KALE PORTFOLIO
The stairway was never meant to be used for a public recreational activities, it was only to be used as vertical transport medium. Now it is a destination for people to spend their time in evening or do exercise in the morning.

RELIVING THE LOST ARCHITECTURE “So much history can be lost if no one tells the story. So thats what i do. I tell stories. Through text , through pictures, through sketches Fourth Year / Heritage Research / Study of WADAs / Research Based / 2017 / Shivaji University Mentor: Ar. Shashikant Patil / Ar. Ajinkya Patil
A collection of my hand drawn Sketches and Pen-Ink Art of historic heritage building named Nimbalkar Rajwada(Palace). The Research-Anaylsis based studio project to study of a heritage building of our local culture and tell a story about its architecture to the people who have forgotten our lost culture of building houses. A Wada is the traditional residence in Maharashtra, typically a large building of two or more storey with groups of rooms arranged around open courtyards. My research was on Nimbalkar Rajwada in Phaltan, Satara which has history more than a century.

EAST SIDE FACADE OF NIMBALKAR PALACE, PHALTAN. This sketch was the hardest work made in Pen-Ink Dot Rendering which took weeks to complete of size 24 x 35. I wanted to show the broken shattered history of the Rajwada (Palace) which depicted its current condition in todays world. Thus the pieces are the pieces of glass or old culture which is broken and forgotten.
