Johnson’s Good Progress, PPE Shortages of NHS Workers o Boris Johnson is continuing to make "very good progress" in hospital, where he is being treated for coronavirus, according to Downing Street. On Friday, No 10 said Mr Johnson had been able to take short walks in between periods of rest at St Thomas' Hospital in London, where he is being treated. The British Medical Association (BMA) said doctors were putting their lives at risk by working without adequate protection. In the USA, death toll increased by 2,091 and reached 18,777 people. In Spain, death toll increased by 510 people in the last 24 hours and reached 16,353. 917 people died in the UK in the last 24 hours, making the total death toll 9,875. (Turkish) o Speaking at a White House coronavirus briefing, Trump said he would unveil a new advisory group next week that would focus on the process of economic opening. The president, who faced criticism for playing down the threat from the virus in its early stages, has chafed at the devastating economic impact of the strict social distancing measures his administration has recommended. The guidelines are set to stay in place through the end of April. The president will then have to decide whether to extend them or start encouraging people to go back to work and a more normal way of life. (English) o The two top Republicans in the U.S. Congress vowed on Saturday to oppose Democrats’ demands to boost a proposed $250 billion bill to aid small businesses during the coronavirus pandemic by adding money for hospitals and state and local governments. France: Deaths down, fewer in intensive care o In a welcome development in efforts against coronavirus, French officials Saturday reported fewer deaths in the last 24 hours than the previous day, as well as fewer people in intensive care. A total of 353 deaths were reported in hospital and 290 in nursing homes from Friday to Saturday, Jerome Salomon, France's director general of health, told a daily press briefing. This made for a total of 8,943 deaths in hospital and 4,889 in nursing homes. Overall, 13,832 lives have been lost since the outbreak began. The total number of patients in intensive care is 6,883, or 121 fewer than on Friday. (English)
