Death Toll in Turkey Due To Coronavirus Rises By 97 to 1.198 People o Turkey on Sunday registered 97 more deaths from the novel coronavirus in the country over the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 1,198. The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases surged to 56,956 as 4,789 more people tested positive for the virus, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Twitter, sharing the ministry's link for daily updates of coronavirus figures. Turkey Ends Two-Day Curfew Over COVID-19 o Turkey lifted a 48-hour curfew in 31 provinces across the country as of midnight Sunday which had been implemented as part of measures to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. People largely obeyed the weekend curfew, which began at midnight Friday, said the Interior Ministry. (English)

Erdogan Rejects Interior Minister's Resignation o Turkey’s president turned down Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu’s resignation late Sunday which he had tendered over incidents that occurred ahead of a weekend curfew across much of the country to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Soylu “submitted his resignation to the President [Recep Tayyip Erdogan], and our President told him that he did not find the request suitable,” Turkey’s Communications Directorate said in a statement. Obligation of Using Mask and Sanitizer in Public Transport in Ankara o Drivers and passengers of all vehicles will be required to wear protective masks and carry sanitizer for general hygiene in Ankara, the Turkish capital, starting Monday as of 00:01. The capital governorate announced the new measure, put in place to fight the rising tide of the coronavirus pandemic, on Sunday, days after the municipality banned boarding mass transit without masks. Turkey sends 2nd batch of medical supplies to UK o A Turkish military cargo plane carrying second batch of medical supplies departed on Sunday for the U.K. in a bid to help the coronavirus combat. "At the direction of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's instructions, the second batch of medical aid that will be used to fight the COVID-19 virus have been sent to the U.K. today," the Defense Ministry said on Twitter. The Trump administration views May 1 as a target date for relaxing stay-at-home restrictions across the United States, Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hahn said on Sunday. “We see light at the end of the tunnel,” he told ABC’s “This Week.” (English) New York state reached a tragic milestone this week: It now has more Covid-19 patients than any country in the world, aside from the United States. The state's total of 181,026 cases, as of April 11, is higher than Spain's (161,852 cases) and Italy's (152,271), countries with populations many times larger than New York. In New York City, the Covid-19 death rate is about 6% higher than most countries. (English) A new report on the Trump administration's missteps in the early days of the coronavirus' spread into the US was published in the New York Times on Saturday, detailing new instances showing how President Donald Trump ignored the warnings of his advisers about the lethal infectious disease approaching America's doorstep. it would take more than three weeks for Trump to enact social distancing guidelines on March 16. Johnson discharged from hospital; UK Could Be 'Worst Affected' Country in Europe o Prime Minister Boris Johnson has left hospital after being treated for coronavirus. He had three nights in intensive care before returning to a ward on Thursday. On the advice of his medical team, the Prime Minister will not be immediately returning to work. (English) o Front-line staff in the coronavirus crisis are routinely exposed to things the general population would never encounter - loss of patients, illness of colleagues, high levels of stress and increased exposure to Covid-19. Psychological first aid should be provided as the UK runs the risk of a "future mental health crisis", the British Psychological Society said. (English) o The UK is likely to be among the European countries worst affected by coronavirus, one of the government's senior scientific advisers has said. The warning, from Sir Jeremy Farrar, comes as UK deaths from the virus are expected to pass 10,000 on Sunday. (English)

China’s New Cases Rise Above 100 o The number of new cases in mainland China ticked up again, past the 100-mark. The National Health Commission said the country had 108 new confirmed cases, with 98 attributed to travelers from overseas. (English)

Beijing Tightens Grip Over Coronavirus Research o China has imposed restrictions on the publication of academic research on the origins of the novel coronavirus, according to a central government directive and online notices published by two Chinese universities, that have since been removed from the web. Charter flight brings 180 underage Chinese students from San Francisco to Shanghai o A total of 180 underage Chinese students studying overseas took a charter flight to Shanghai on Sunday as part of China's plan to take back young Chinese students amid the COVID-19 pandemic. (English)

Coronavirus: Italy orders rescued migrants onto quarantine ship o Italy has ordered 156 migrants on board a German rescue ship off the western coast of Sicily to be transferred to another vessel and quarantined. North Korea İnsists İt Has No Coronavirus – How the State is Managing the Story o North Korea continues to insist that it is completely free of coronavirus. The World Health Organization’s representative to the country said that 709 people had been tested with no confirmed cases as of April 2. Observers are naturally sceptical, particularly given the 10,000 cases and 200 deaths from COVID-19, the disease linked to the new coronavirus, in neighboring South Korea. (English)

Italy: Lockdown is Working Says Member of CTS Expert Committee o The Civil Protection Department said Sunday that 19,899 have died in Italy after contracting the coronavirus, up 431 with respect to Saturday. It is the lowest daily rise in the death toll in a week and compares to Saturday's increase of 619. (English)

French Science Council Lists Deconfinement Conditions o Ahead of President Macron’s national address tomorrow (Monday April 13) which is expected to extend confinement to at least May 3 - we look at three factors that scientists say are necessary for deconfinement. (English) o On the other hand, confinements may be extended “a minimum of one month" according to an executive adviser. (French)

The Minister of Agriculture Calls on Mayors And Prefects To Reopen The Markets o The government had been forced to close markets and health measures to fight the new coronavirus. Since then, a third of the markets have reopened thanks to exemptions. The Minister, aware of the economic importance of the markets for producers, today calls for their reopening. (French)

Greek People Ahead of Easter Holidays Violate the Rules o Greece reported a total of 2,114 cases of confirmed coronavirus infections and the number of deaths comes to 98. (Greek) o A total of 2,322 fines for unnecessary travel were imposed by the Greek Police on Saturday, despite the relevant ban. (Greek)

Coronavirus Cases in Russia Every Day Set New Record o Russia confirmed 2,186 new coronavirus infections on Sunday, bringing the country’s official number of cases up to 15,770 and marking a one-day record in new cases. (English) o The Central Bank allowed banks to open a number of accounts for new customers remotely for the purpose of making socially significant payments. OPEC And Allies Finalize Record Oil Production Cut After Days of Discussion o OPEC and its oil producing allies on Sunday finalized a historic agreement to cut production by 9.7 million barrels per day, which is the single largest output cut in history. The group, known as OPEC+, initially proposed cutting production by 10 million barrels per day on Thursday, but Mexico opposed the amount it was being asked to cut, holding up the final deal. Under OPEC+’s new agreement, Mexico will cut 100,000 barrels per day, instead of the 400,000 barrels per day it had initially been asked to cut. On Friday President Donald Trump said the U.S. would cut production in an effort to get Mexico “over the barrel.” (English)

Turkish Regulator Slashes Limits on Banks' FX Transactions o Turkey’s banking watchdog said on Sunday it was slashing the limit for banks’ foreign-exchange swap, forward and option transactions with foreign entities to 1% of a bank’s equity, from 10% previously. (English)

The EU Promises A 500 Billion Euro Aid Plan o This aid plan is not financed from the budget of the European Union. European states will provide guarantees of up to 25 billion euros in investment to the European Bank. The European Bank will thus be able to lend 200 billion euros to businesses. (French)

Major Chinese Property Developers Report Monthly Sales Growth o Sales of China's leading property developers saw robust growth in March amid the economic recovery from the novel coronavirus outbreak, an industry report showed. Sales of the surveyed 100 major property developers marked a monthly growth of 136.2 percent but still a drop of 17 percent year on year, according to data from CRIC, a property research institution.
