98 People Died in 1 Day, Turkey’s Death Toll Rises to 1,296 o Turkey on Monday confirmed 98 more deaths from the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 1,296. The total number of registered coronavirus cases surged to 61,049 as 4,093 more people tested positive for the virus, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Twitter, sharing the ministry's link for daily updates of coronavirus figures. President Erdogan: We’ll Declare A Lockdown on April 17-19 o “Our goal is to protect citizens who might otherwise give in to the temptation provided by the good weather, from the dangers of coronavirus. I would thus like to announce ahead that we will impose a lockdown starting midnight April 17 and ending Sunday midnight,” Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish President, said. (Turkish)

Minister Gul: Three Prisoners in Open Prisons Died Due to Coronavirus o Three Turkish prisoners have died from Covid-19, Abdulhamit Gul, Turkey's Justice Minister, has said, as he announced the first cases of convicts diagnosed with the disease. A total of 17 convicts in five open prisons have contracted the virus, Gul told reporters. (Turkish)

Environment and Urbanization Ministry’s Circular Letter For 28 Cities with A Coast o Citizens and authorities are not allowed to contact any ship coming from abroad and is not controlled for any medical risk, according to the circular letter sent by the Environment and Urbanization Ministry to 28 cities with a coast. Contact with ships proven to be free of risk should be contacted through only protective equipment. (Turkish)

UK: No Easing the Lockdown o The death toll from COVID-19 in British hospitals rose to 11,329 on Monday and the government, which is having to operate without its convalescing leader Boris Johnson, signaled that there would be no easing of lockdown measures this week. The number of COVID-19 deaths in hospitals across the United Kingdom has passed 11,000 and a senior scientific adviser to the government has said the country risks becoming the worst-hit in Europe. (English) o The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) says nearly 3,000 fire and rescue staff across the UK are in isolation. It has called on the government to provide urgent coronavirus testing of its members so they can return to work. (English) President Donald Trump is likely to announce restrictions on US funding for the World Health Organization this week over its handling of the coronavirus pandemic, as the administration and conservative allies ramped up their criticism that the United Nations agency catered to China early in the outbreak and jeopardized global health. "If we had, right from the beginning, shut everything down, it may have been a little bit different," Dr Anthony Fauci told CNN, but added that making that decision had been complicated. France Called on The Country’s ‘’Shadow Army’’ o The supply of fruit and vegetables in Europe relies heavily on seasonal workers brought in from different towns or even countries, but because of the pandemic many of them under lockdown. Hence, France's Agriculture Minister has called on the country's "shadow army" to help pick fruit and vegetables, appealing to citizens who are currently unemployed because of the lockdown. France Extends Lockdown Until 11 May o France has extended its coronavirus lockdown for a further four weeks until 11 May, Emmanuel Macron has announced. In his third televised address about the coronavirus pandemic, the president admitted that France had not been prepared for the crisis and that there had been “failings and insufficiencies” in healthcare systems and elderly care facilities. President Emmanuel Macron said social gatherings and leisure activities will remain banned until at least mid-July. There have been more than 135,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in France, resulting in 14,967 deaths. Only the US, Spain and Italy have had more confirmed cases of the deadly virus. (English)

China Tries to Stop Second Wave as Worst-Hit Countries Report Fewer Daily Deaths o The death toll from the coronavirus pandemic has slowed in some of the worsthit countries as mainland China tried to prevent a second wave of Covid-19 infections. Having largely stamped out domestic transmission of the disease, China has been slowly easing curbs on movement as it tries to get its economy back on track, but there are fears that a rise in imported cases could spark a second wave of Covid-19 - especially among Chinese citizens returning from abroad. Slowing Rates of Infection in Greece, Fatalities at 100; Extra Bonus for Long-Term Jobless o Greece reported a total of 2,145 cases of confirmed coronavirus infections and the number of deaths comes to 100. (Greek) o Greek PM Mitsotakis announced an extraordinary 400-euro bonus and support programs to roughly 155,000 long-term unemployed. Russian President Vladimir Putin warned coronavirus outbreak is deteriorating and its new cases are getting more severe, bringing the total to 18,328 and 148 total deaths, making it the world’s 15th most-affected country. Death Toll in Italy Exceeds 20 Thousand o The number of cases of the novel coronavirus outbreak around the world exceeded 1 Mn 856 while the death toll is over 115 thousand people. Death toll in Italy rose by 566 people in the last 24 hours and reached 20.465 people. On the other hand, 111 people in Iran, 517 people in Spain, 717 people in the UK, and 1.508 people in the US died due to the coronavirus in last 24 hours. (Turkish)

World Bank Sees 'Huge Willingness' To Suspend Debt Payments for Poorest Countries o The World Bank is seeing “a huge willingness” on the part of official bilateral creditors to suspend debt payments by the world’s poorest countries so they can focus on fighting the coronavirus pandemic, a top Bank official said on Monday. Effective Global Oil Cuts Above 19 Million Bpd o Saudi Arabia’s energy minister said on Monday that effective global oil supply cuts would amount to around 19.5 million barrels per day, taking into account the reduction pact agreed by OPEC+, pledges by other G20 nations and oil purchases into reserves. Coronavirus Cause %20 Decline in Rents at Hong Kong’s Central District o In global real estate markets, the retail and hospitality sectors are the biggest casualties of the unprecedented turmoil caused by Covid-19. Forecasts of a 15-20 per cent decline in rents in Central this year now look optimistic. However, occupiers are also cautious about relocating to alternative business districts. (English)

Fighting Hunger in the Time of An Outbreak: ''Rice ATM'' o Many small businesses have been shuttered and thousands of people temporarily laid off from work following an ongoing nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. In this regard, in Vietnam, an entrepreneur in Ho Chi Minh City has invented a 24/7 ATM machine providing free rice for people out of work. The machine distributes rice packets to waiting workers, many of whom are street sellers or people who earned a living from cash-in-hand jobs like housekeeping or selling lottery tickets. (English)

Despite Coronavirus, Deforestation Continues in Amazon Forests o According to government data released on Friday (April 10), deforestation in Brazil's Amazon rainforest increased last March due to illegal logging and land speculators. Destruction of Amazon rainforest in Brazil increased by 30% compared to the same month of the previous year, according to the country's space research agency INPE.
