THE PRIMARY GOAL OF OUR 2016 REPORT WAS TO RAISE AWARENESS ON THE ISSUE OF SUSTAINABILITY. FOR THAT PURPOSE, WE CREATED A CONCEPT USING THE NAUTILUS, ONE OF THE OLDEST EXTANT SPECIES ON EARTH, ALONGSIDE THE GOLDEN RATIO HIDDEN IN THE FIBONACCI SEQUENCE. FOR OUR 2017 REPORT, WE HAVE SELECTED FLUORESCENT ORGANISMS AS OUR MAIN CONCEPT TO REMIND THAT IT IS THE DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITY OF THE "AWARE" TO ENLIGHTEN THOSE AROUND THEM. ABOVE ALL, AWARENESS REQUIRES CURIOSITY AND A THIRST FOR KNOWLEDGE. TO LEARN, AND TO KNOW, IS IN FACT A GREAT RESPONSIBILITY, AS KNOWLEDGE DRIVES NOT ONLY A CHANGE IN BEHAVIOR, BUT ALSO A CHANGE IN AWARENESS. ONCE A PERSON OR AN ENTERPRISE BECOMES AWARE, THEY UNDERSTAND THE FUTILITY OF ANY ATTEMPT TO ISOLATE THEMSELVES FROM THEIR ENVIRONMENT, OR FROM THEIR COMMUNITY. WHEN FACED WITH ENVIRONMENTAL, SOCIAL OR ECONOMIC PROBLEMS, THEY FORGO THE “NONE-OF-MY-BUSINESS” ATTITUDE, INSTEAD ASKING “WHAT CAN I DO TO TRANSFORM THIS PROBLEM, WHICH I AM A PART OF, INTO A SOLUTION?” IN FACT, AWARENESS MAY BE DEFINED AS THE ENLIGHTENMENT BROUGHT ABOUT BY THE REALIZATION OF OUR INTERCONNECTEDNESS WITH ALL BEINGS, LIVING AND INANIMATE, AND OUR RESPONSIBILITY TOWARDS ONE ANOTHER. ONE SUCH CASE IS THE ADAMER PROJECT OF ADAYSK (PRINCE ISLANDS MARINE LIFE AND SPORTS CLUB ASSOCIATION), A SUBSTANTIAL EFFORT TOWARDS THE MARMARA SEA CARRIED OUT WITH SUPPORT FROM MAZARS DENGE. YOU MAY ASK YOURSELF, WHAT DOES A TAX, ACCOUNTING, AUDIT AND CONSULTANCY FIRM HAVE TO DO WITH TRANSPLANTATION OF CORAL COLONIES, WHICH HAVE SUFFERED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE WHEN CONSTRUCTION WASTE FROM YASSIADA WERE DUMPED INTO THE SEA, TO NEANDROS? YET, IT HAS BEEN MAZARS DENGE WHO SERVED AS A LIAISON TO SECURE THE INITIAL PHASE FINANCING FOR THE ADAMER PROJECT, WHICH IS PROGRESSING SUCCESFULLY. THUS, THOSE WHO ARE AWARE OF THE TIES THAT BIND US, AND HAVE THE ENLIGHTENMENT THIS AWARENESS BRINGS, SHOULDER THE RESPONSIBILITY OF PROMOTING THE TENETS OF LONG-TERM THINKING, STAKEHOLDER BENEFIT IN DECISION-MAKING, AND THE KEY IMPORTANCE OF BALANCE BETWEEN THE ECONOMY, ENVIRONMENT, AND SOCIETY. AND FOR MAZARS DENGE, RAISING OUR OWN SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AND SHARING OUR KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE TO TRANSFORM ALL OF OUR EMPLOYEES INTO VERITABLE SUSTAINABILITY AMBASSADORS IS A KEY SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY MISSION FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE WHERE WE WILL DRAW MORE INSPIRATION FROM ONE ANOTHER.

Our sustainability model contributes to the creation of an environmental, social and economic balance, and to the pursuit of progress.
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN 10
Dear Stakeholders, As a Native American proverb says, “We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children. In our previous sustainability report we shared with you last year, I delved into the importance of the environment, stressed how humanity exploited the environment to the brink of destruction until the advent of the information society, and noted that, while this issue calls for national and international effort, we, as individuals and organizations, still have a big role to play, that we are running out of time, and that we have to place a sustainable economic model to the top of our list of priorities without delay. While important steps have been taken to create this sustainable economic model, we were disappointed to witness some worrying decisions, such as the fact that certain countries, which are in fact the leading actors in the world’s falling environmental biodiversity, withdrawing their support from the Paris Climate Agreement.
On the other hand, movements such as the “Buy Nothing

The values of our 40-year-old company have buoyed us up since the beginning, becoming an indispensable part of our operating procedures.
MESSAGE FROM THE CEO 12
Dear Stakeholders, 2017, the year of our proud 40th anniversary, was a year of intense development for us despite all the negative conditions it brought about. A question I was often asked was, “How are you able to maintain such a positive outlook on the future?” As I responded, I realized once again how important for me it was to see our company, built on common values, on a bright path, taking firm steps towards growth. Is this journey of growth devoid of mistakes, shortcomings and erroneous decisions? Certainly not. However, what really matters is that we overcome obstacles in good faith, balance our economic benefit with our social and environmental impact, and keep driving our company forward at all times. Seeing with my own eyes the value our work adds to our stakeholders, and witnessing this journey of growth fills me with hope, joy and motivation—a sentiment I believe is shared by all of our colleagues. Our first GRI G4 corporate sustainability report strived, above all, to create awareness among all stakeholders, especially the employees of Mazars Denge.
Stakeholder surveys we carried out in late 2017 reveal that the

40TH YEAR LETTER DELIVERED. On January 2, 2017, employees of Mazars Denge found an envelope in their offices, containing a letter that appeared as if written four decades ago. In the letter, Leon Aslan Coşkun, founder and chairman of Mazars Denge expressed his belief that the dream of a 40-year-old company could only become a reality by staying true to the right values and creating a team that believed in one another. In the second week of January, Mazars Denge employees found an identical envelope, and a 40th year souvenir pencil, which they used to

MAZARS DENGE ISSUES COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS FOR ITS 40TH ANNIVERSARY, A FIRST IN THE SECTOR. Alluding to hard copy documents, which are part of Mazars Denge’s business, the project brought back the concept of stamps, an important aspect of daily and commercial transactions at the time of Mazars Denge’s founding that have since become souvenir items. Being issued the same year as Mazars Denge published its sustainability report in form of an interactive, mobile report app on the iOS platform for the first time in Turkey, the anniversary stamps celebrated the company’s past and values while representing its new direction into the future and innovation. The project was developed jointly with Turkish Postal Agency PTT, enabling the stamps to be used on international correspondence, some of which were used in communications with Mazars offices worldwide.

SEPTEMBER 2017 MAZARS DENGE 40TH YEAR RECEPTION Mazars Denge’s 40th Year Reception was held on September 14 at the French Palace in Istanbul with an attendance of over 600. At the event, Mazars Denge employees who completed 10 years of service and long-term clients of the company received commemorative plaques. The reception featured a separate segment devoted to presentations on Mazars Denge’s sustainability efforts.
“This 40-year journey, full of good and bad memories and challenges overcome, would have been impossible without your support, which brought us to where we are today. When my partner, the late Midat Benhayim and I set upon this journey 40 years ago, at a time when the profession of accounting and auditing was yet to gain a formal structure, its experts simply called ‘clerks’ and accounting offices seen as ‘deal-sealers’, all before the advent of the Anglo-Saxon Big Four, or the Big Ten as they were called back then, we could not have even imagined that we would have come so far.” Leon Aslan Coşkun,

A STORY OF CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A CEO Dünya Newspaper published the 13-part article series titled “A Sustainability Story” by Mazars Denge CEO Dr. İzel Levi Coşkun.
The French Palace served as the first diplomatic mission of France in the Ottoman period, a role it continued to play after the foundation of the Republic of Turkey until the embassy was moved to the capital, Ankara. Construction of the building, designed by Pierre Laurécisque, began in 1839. The land occupied by the building, which has served as a long-standing symbol of the diplomatic and commercial relations between France and Turkey, has been owned by the French state for four centuries.

Established in 1988, the Audit Department leverages the technical expertise of its global partner, Mazars, in carrying out its operations. Mazars Denge is licensed in Turkey by the PCAOB (Public Company Accounting Oversight Board), the organization that authorizes external audit companies to carry out audits of public companies in the United States under the SarbanesOxley Act. MAZARS DENGE’S SUSTAINABILIT Y APPROACH The concept of learning can be described as a change in an individual’s behavioral patterns, brought about by experience, education and training. The key factors of learning are perception, understanding and comprehension. Today’s economic reality and consumer society urge individuals to follow certain, common behavioral patterns. At the same time, concepts that form the core of the sustainability approach, such as long-term thinking, seeking the benefit of all stakeholders, and balancing economic interest with social and environmental impact, are yet to be understood and internalized by the majority of the society. Businesses have a great responsibility in promoting these concepts; however, competition, continuous growth and short-term gains, coupled with the fact that business performance is based solely on fiscal metrics, keep global enterprises on the traditional path, and as a consequence, away from the mission of raising social awareness on sustainability. At this juncture, sustainability reports are seldom more than marketing tools that do not reflect the true purpose of the organization, drawn up by corporate communications directors and/or external experts rather than the boards or CEOs, who prefer to avoid the effort due to a lack of familiarity, or conviction, in the concept. Realization of sustainable growth goals depends on the cooperation of all stakeholders involved, including governments, businesses, and particularly the society. Unfortunately, however, the society is hardly capable of fulfilling this role due to a lack of information in general, and the frequent misguidance that is prevalent across different media.

At this point, the essential role of businesses in promoting the concept of sustainability in the society is made obvious, given that more than one thirds of the working population is employed in public or private companies. For Mazars Denge, ensuring that the sustainability awareness is embraced by all employees across the enterprise is a crucial objective with respect to the company’s responsibility towards future generations, and this objective can only be achieved through employee training and experience-building. Such training activities include seminars and meetings, film screenings on the subject, sharing of articles and essays, and events carried out with relevant NGOs. In 2017, a number of training activities on sustainability were carried out at Mazars Denge offices, with two events taking place at the Istanbul office. At the same time, sustainability was discussed in detail at coordination and Executive Board meetings, as well as 14 CEO breakfast events, which were attended by 168 employees in total comprising 10 to 12 people groups from various departments. Other sustainability-related efforts included three film screenings attended by 46 employees, as well as various activities aimed at exploring the sustainable development goals. Yet, experience can only be attained through real-life examples that employees can identify with. Refusing to bid on a project that does not comply with the company’s principles of social benefit, or seeking permission of the other party to evaluate an external employee request received in a period of intensive audit can be considered as two such cases. As employee turnover is still comparatively high, it is crucial to maintain continuous training as well as the idea that experiences play a key role in business, with their impact on a variety of aspects from service quality to responsible income, corporate governance to employee development, and code of ethics to gender equality.
The community-related performance and environmental impact of businesses’ activities play a critical role in the effective continuation of their operations, as well as in the evaluation of their overall performance. This makes the coexistence of healthy ecosystems, social quality and corporate governance a prerequisite for corporate sustainability.

M AT E R I A L I S S U E 1: G E N E R AT I N G S U S TA I N A B L E A N D R E S P O N S I B L E I N C O M E
There are five main components of Mazars Denge’s goal to Generate Sustainable and Responsible Income.
DEVELOPMENT INSTEAD OF GROW TH Mazars Denge knows very well that it is impossible to achieve limitless growth in a limited world. It is therefore a company that focuses on development rather than on growth. Growth is a quantitative concept. Development, meanwhile, is qualitative and involves many factors such as education, institutionalization, sharing, creating added value, quality, innovation and entrepreneurship. It is a concept that is related to the investment in humans and the environment. Mazars Denge’s definition of sustainability is geared towards transforming the consumption-based economic growth model that concentrates “interest” into one that “generalizes” sustainable interest where stakeholders, nature and the society all benefit from it. In a sense, this depends upon balancing economic gains with social and environmental impact within a corporate order. In 2017, Mazars Denge carried out activities to serve the purposes of responsible income. These include boosting the number of female managers, increasing the frequency of professional and competence training programs, introducing quality grading, accepting no more than optimal number of tasks in busy periods and revision of customer selection criteria.
ETHICS In his book ‘Transient Caretakers: Making Life on Earth Sustainable,’ Mervyn King, IIRC Chairman, says, “Ethics is about how you make money.” At Mazars Denge, the perspective of ethics combines utilitarianism (utilitarian ethics) that creates multiple benefits with care ethics. Utilitarianism is a consequentialist theory which focuses on the results of an action. According to this theory, the most correct behavior is the one required by the action that creates maximum benefit. There are four dimensions of this theory, namely, the sphere of influence of this behavior that would create maximum benefit, its duration, its power or volume of impact and its probability. Sustainability perspective and utilitarian ethics stipulate for a behavior that seeks benefits not for itself but for the entire system.

Mazars Denge is driven by a set of “corporate governance principles” that cover fair management, transparency, accountability and responsibility as required by the responsible business approach it has adopted in line with and as a result of its sustainability strategy. Corporate Governance Principles and Practices at Mazars: TR ANSPARENC Y In line with Mazars’ principles of international transparency, the independent audit company Crowe Horwarth has been auditing Mazars Denge since 2009. Results are consolidated and published on the Mazars website. ACCOUNTABILIT Y Mazars Denge aims to ensure stakeholder participation in defining important strategies connected with sustainable development that can impact organizational performance. The company also aims to provide reliable information and be accountable to its stakeholders. Fatma Kapıyoldaş Accounting & Finance Director – Kirazlı Triko It is a great pleasure to know that there are companies such as Mazars Denge, which evaluates the present day with a different perspective, strives for continuing its production without dropping into despair and proving beneficial to the society, and has long-term and committed future plans. Following the sustainability principle from day one and proving its adherence to this principle with every step it takes, Mazars Denge continues its activities successfully for 40 years in a highly competitive and challenging industry. This is very promising and pleasing for the bright people of our country. I sincerely wish you further success with your works. Gülcan Yılmaz TaeuguTec – Chief Financial Officer Mazars Denge has been a very important solution partner for us, and we have worked with Mazars Denge on a "trust" basis for long years. The two most important elements of tax consultancy and audit are definitely "trust" and "ethical values". Reflecting these elements not only in its corporate identity but also in the working methods of its employees, a company issues a sustainability report in a period where our country goes through economically, politically and socially challenging times and in an environment of fierce price competition which makes it more difficult every day to do business. This is sufficient to prove that it fulfills the requirements of the present day, makes strong investments in future, fulfills its both social and occupational responsibilities in the long-run, and does not sacrifice its long-term future for its short-term benefits. Başak Öztürk Şerifhan Groupe Atlantic – Finance Director Our company has been working with Mazars Denge for 11 years from the very first day of its foundation. We are a member of Groupe Atlantic which has investments in 17 countries, and follows the group's both living and working principles in all aspects, and seeks these common principles in the business and solution partners it will work with in its each country of operation. Actually it was no surprise for me that Mazars Denge, which gives us confidence in all aspect and which is deeply committed to ethical values and attaches great importance to employee development and satisfaction, carried out professional studies in the field of sustainability and issued a globally valid report. In my opinion, Mazars Denge has been meeting all requirements of the sustainability concept for long years and thus has never sacrificed Turkey's high-quality growth despite the political, economic and industrial problems and crises for 40 years. I have no doubt that it will continue to lead by example in the field of sustainability primarily in its sector.
INNOVATIONS IN SERVICES AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES Both the fast pace of the developments in the IT technologies and the problems encountered in the face of the increasing volume of data related to accounting records of organizations subject to audit made digital transformation inevitable also in the auditing sector as is the case with various other sectors. Mazars Denge keeps abreast of technological developments, and attaches importance to offering high-quality services to clients and making a difference with the technologies it has integrated into its services. Accordingly, Mazars Denge conducts its tax and independent audits with the "CAP Audit" program, which utilizes technical infrastructure developed by Futurecom, and features content that has been shaped by the 40-year experience of Mazars Denge. The advantages of "CAP Audit" program can be summarized as follows: ✦ Mazars Denge provides services at a certain quality level in a manner to reflect the organizational culture during the audit. ✦ Auditors' capacity is increased. Carrying out all necessary audit procedures using CAP ensures that all auditors perform the same analyses within similar terms and with similar quality. ✦ Audit risk is minimized while risk-based audit performed. ✦ A computer-based audit system is used, and analyses are performed using clients' all data. ✦ All audits performed are comparable, traceable and subject to approval, and this prevents any action taken without the knowledge of the audit company. ✦ Audits performed are system-based rather than individual-based. ✦ All audits performed are archived, and this makes it faster to access information and documents and reduces archiving costs in terms of time and venue.

“We may express good wishes for future every day, write our opinion, or post content on social media. We may criticize the governments and major capital owners that are in control of the world, complain about our status and easily blame the culprit of whatever we complain about. When we set all these things aside and wish to do something ourselves, we may then hesitate as we believe that our impact will not be enough for change. This is where non-governmental organizations are essential. Cultural, social and human values we wish to reach and maintain and the future we wish to shape must be more accessible with the impact created by people from all ages meeting on a common ground under the umbrella of various well-established organizations striving to achieve these targets. In this connection, it is very promising of Mazars Denge to provide the chance to meet the representatives of various distinguished organizations such as Amnesty International, ADYSK, Çekül and Tog and exchange opinions with them, make donations in their activities or participate in their projects, or engage in new joint projects with them."

CULTUR AL SUSTAINABILIT Y In line with its sustainability strategy, Mazars Denge believes that employees should attain awareness and knowledge on social, cultural and historical matters in addition to matters concerning their respective profession, and in doing so, broaden their horizon and become part of a learning organization. The communication efforts are focused on sustainability approach. CEO meetings, sustainability trainings and interoffice communication campaign were held for internal stakeholders. CEO meetings started before the report was published, and allowed the CEO to directly provide the employees with information on the report preparation process, and gave the employees the chance to provide feedback. The sustainability trainings held in Istanbul and Ankara addressed the aspects to which attention should be paid while reading the sustainability report and telling about it to the other stakeholders. One of the objectives of these trainings was to develop the future's sustainability ambassadors. 73
Communication activities were carried out in frequently-used areas on Mazars Denge Sustainability Model, corporate governance principles and prioritized UN Sustainability Development Goals in order to reinforce interoffice communication. These communication messages were displayed in areas such as printing centers and aisles, and the communication messages shown on table mats used for meals and danglers used for the first time at the company integrated the sustainability communication into daily course of business. Turkish and English versions of the report were placed in meeting rooms, and a Chinese Summary Sustainability Report was also published for our Chinese clients.
Binnur Tanrıverdi Accounting Services – Director I am happy to work at a company having a history of 40 years, which stands out among its peers with the importance it gives to social responsibility projects and sustainability, which makes its employees feel this support and feel valuable, and which can raise awareness. Our awareness has been increased further after the first sustainability report, and we all observed the decisions made and their results together. I do believe that these efforts will inspire and lead others by example, and will offer us an opportunity to review what we can do individually about sustainability.
The communication messages shared on social media and website focused on sustainability efforts, and Turkey's first interactive Sustainability Report mobile app was developed in order to reach out the Generation Z and carry out the communication activities in an environment-friendly manner.
SUSTAINABILIT Y LESSONS ARE SHARED... Communications with the press focused on sustainability efforts. Only sustainability bulletins and interviews were published other than occupational bulletins and interviews.
Loic Wallaert Mazars – Country Offices Development Coordinator, Consultant for Board of Directors "İzel had an important leading position even long years before his report was published. We have talked with him about this for long years. According to me, this report is just perfect. This is because it addresses highly important issues for Mazars. Even though I am aware that this will mean a high work load, I believe this great initiative must definitely be continued as it perfectly reflects the DNA of Mazars.
The 13-part article series titled "A Corporate Sustainability Story" written by Dr. İzel Levi Coşkun, Mazars Denge CEO, for Dünya Daily Newspaper aimed to draw attention of senior managers in Turkey to the concept of sustainability and sustainability reports. The article series describe the experience of Mazars Denge as it wrote its first report. Managing personally all sustainability activities, Dr. İzel Levi Coşkun shared with the stakeholders the organization's experience related to preparation of the report in a truly transparent manner. More than 30% of the social media communication activities was reserved for sustainability efforts and the sustainability report. More than 60 social media posts out of over 200 posts shared in 2017 were related to sustainability communications. In conclusion, the rate of the publications related to the main field of activity was reduced to 70%, and thus efforts were spent towards explaining the sustainability approach to the industry.
