Five Haiku Text based on Matsuo Bashô haiku
For 5 performers Flute, Bb Clarinet, Violin, Violoncello and Piano
Spiros Mazis 2009
General notes The score is written at sounding pitch (in C). Total Duration: c.7-8' Barlines: The bars serve mostly as a means of synchronization, so barlines and beats never imply accents. The music should flow smoothly. Free duration, senza tempo, within the duration and tempo of the note below or above the bracket.

quartertone.
Performance Notes Flute Harmonics: Finger the note indicated and manipulate the embouchure to produce higher pitches corresponding to the harmonic series.
TR: Tongue ram W.T: Whistle Tones
Sounds mixed with breath (the pitch should be perceptible).
Tongue pizz: Articulate the pitches indicated with a hard "T".
Singing while playing: The sung passage should sound an octave below the written flute line, but may be performed in unison by female performers.
Air sound: Air only; no precise pitch should be perceptible.
Key click(s): finger the pitch indicated and slap a key without blowing.
J.W.: Jet Whistle: cover the embouchure hole completely with the mouth, and blow as forcefully as possible directly into the instrument. The effect is a loud “whoosh” that can be quite penetrating.
