Match Factory strikes deals on Berlinale titles Ethan Hawke
Hawke flies with Maudie BY JEREMY KAY
Mongrel International has spiced up its EFM slate and become one of a handful of sales agents to secure the services of Ethan Hawke. The Oscar nominee will star opposite Sally Hawkins in Maudie, the bizarre true-life romance that is scheduled to shoot this summer in Newfoundland, Canada. Hawke will play a reclusive fish peddler who falls for his arthritic housekeeper Maud, who displays little talent for her job but goes on to become a celebrated folk artist. Aisling Walsh will direct from a screenplay by Canada’s Sherry White. Bob Cooper of Los Angelesbased Landscape Films produces with Mary Young Leckie of Toronto’s Solo Productions and Susan Mullen of Parallel Films, the Dublin producers behind Albert Nobbs. Mongrel Media president and founder Hussain Amarshi said: “As the distributor of both Boyhood and Seymour in Canada, I’m thrilled we now have another film with Ethan.” Executive producers are Heather Haldane of Toronto-based H Is4 Productions, Mary Sexton of Newfoundland-based Rink Rat, Landscape’s Tyler Mitchell and Parallel’s Alan Moloney and Johanna Hogan.

Some 20 years after Gaumont’s comic time travellers Godefroy the Hardy and Jacquasse the Crass first touched down in 1990s France, they are set to hit the big screen again next year in The Visitors: Bastille Day. Gaumont International will launch sales on the third instalment of the successful time-travel franchise at EFM. Popular French actor Christian Clavier will reprise his role as Jacquasse the Crass, the uncouth servant of bumbling knight Godefroy the Hardy, played by Jean Reno.
The $28.5m (¤25m) production, directed once again by creator Jean-Marie Poiré, will transport the hapless anti-heroes to the French Revolution. The picture, in pre-production, will be released in the first half of 2016. It is a co-production between Gaumont and Ouille Productions. The original The Visitors topped the French box office in 1993, drawing some 20 million admissions and was distributed in more than 20 territories, including the US. Sequel The Visitors II: The Corridors Of Time (1998) also did good business and
an English-language version, Just Visiting, was released in 2001. Gaumont will also kick off sales on Christian Vincent’s Courted (L’Hermine), a tale of seemingly unrequited love between a tough judge and one of the jurors on a complicated case involving the death of a baby girl. Danish star Sidse Babett Knudsen (Borgen, The Duke Of Burgundy) co-stars alongside Fabrice Luchini. The film, produced by Parisbased Albertine Productions (Gemma Bovery) is in post-production and due for release in the second half of 2015.

Goldcrest launches NY sales arm By Andreas Wiseman
Takashi Miike
Miike, Iwai lead charge for NTV By Liz Shackleton
Japan’s Nippon TV (NTV) is launching sales on titles by hot Japanese directors Takashi Miike and Shunji Iwai here in Berlin. Based on Masashi Sada’s novel and song, Miike’s The Lion Standing In The Wind follows a Japanese doctor who travels to Africa and treats a boy soldier. Miike shot the film in Japan and Kenya last year. Takao Osawa (Shield Of Straw) plays the doctor and the cast also includes Satomi Ishihara and Yoko Maki. The Japanese release is scheduled for March 14. Iwai’s animated feature The Case Of Hana And Alice is a followup to his live-action romance Hana And Alice (2004). That film’s leads, Yu Aoi and Anne Suzuki, voice the animation. The Japanese release is scheduled for February 20. NTV’s slate also includes Yu Irie’s Joker Game, Yukihiko Tsutsumi’s Initiation Love and Takahisa Zeze’s Strayer’s Chronicles.
Goldcrest’s New York-based documentary distributor, Saboteur Media, is entering the international sales arena and will launch two films at EFM. Sales will be handled by Pierre Weisbein, formerly of Goldcrest, Canal Plus and StudioCanal. Screening in Berlin’s Panorama section is Afghan war documentary Tell Spring Not To Come This Year by directors Saeed Taji Farouky and Michael McEvoy. Also on the slate is Shan Nicholson’s Rubble Kings about gangs and hip-hop culture in New York between 1968 and 1975. Saboteur will release day-and-date in the US later this year.
Japanese studio Nikkatsu is attending EFM with Hideo Nakata horror title Ghost Theatre and Yuki Tanada’s Romance, which teams the director with award-winning actress-singer Yuko Oshima. Nakata is revisiting his roots with Ghost Theatre (working title), inspired by his 1996 horror Ghost Actress, made before he filmed The Ring franchise, which kicked off a worldwide interest in J-horror.

While Ghost Actress followed a vengeful spirit that drives a movie crew to insanity, Ghost Theatre is set in a haunted playhouse. The film has been receiving offers even before footage is available, according to Nikkatsu reps. Actresses Haruka Shimazaki and Rika Adachi head the cast of the film, which is in post-production. Meanwhile, Tanada’s Romance (working title) stars Oshima as a young woman working on a lux-
ury train who embarks on a road trip with a shady film producer. A former member of pop band AKB48, Oshima won several awards for her supporting role in Daihachi Yoshida’s Pale Moon. The film marks Tanada’s return to directing her own original screenplay for the first time since One Million Yen Girl, which won the Directors Guild of Japan’s new directors award in 2008. The Japanese release is scheduled for autumn.
The Solution Entertainment Group will commence sales on the Amanda Seyfried and Theo James supernatural thriller Black Lung for 2929 Productions and Cooper’s Town Productions. The film is the story of a woman whose premonition saves her coal miner husband and leads to the discovery of a malignant force.

Fox, Chancellor join Cox in Yellow Affair’s Carer By Andreas Wiseman
Brian Cox, Emilia Fox, Anna Chancellor and newcomer Coco König will star in The Carer, which is set to begin shooting in the UK later this month. The Yellow Affair will present the English-language drama, directed by Janos Edelenyi (Prima Primavera), here at EFM. The Carer is the last film scripted by the late Gilbert Adair, screenwriter of Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Dreamers, and was co-written by the director and long-time Adair collaborator Tom Kinninmont. Cox will play an ageing star of stage and screen who forms an unlikely relationship with his immigrant carer. Producers are Jozsef
Berger of Hungary’s Mythberg Films, Steve Bowden of the UK’s Vita Nova Films, Charlotte Wontner of the UK’s Hopscotch Films and Kai Künnemann of Germany’s A-Company. Cox said of the film: “One of the central strengths of the movie is the comic creation of character Sir Michael Gifford. His persona is so bombastic and full of himself while at the same time revealing deep and tragic elements of his character. “There’s a very strong feelgood element to the movie and ultimately it’s about redemption and about being who you are.” The Yellow Affair has already sold the film to Rialto for Australia and New Zealand.
Jodorowsky gets a Kickstart By Liz Shackleton
Chilean film-maker Alejandro Jodorowsky is launching a Kickstarter campaign for his upcoming feature Endless Poetry (Poesia Sin Fin), which marks the first co-production between Chile, Japan and France. Paris-based Satori Films is joining forces with Chile’s Le Soleil Films and Japan’s Uplink Co on the Spanishlanguage project, a continuation of Jodorowsky’s
autobiographical The Dance Of Reality, which premiered in Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 2013. The Kickstarter campaign will be launched on February 15, with an announcement by Jodorowsky on YouTube Live. While The Dance Of Reality focused on Jodorowsky’s unhappy childhood in Tocopilla, Endless Poetry revolves around his life as a poet in Santiago during the
1940s. His sons, Adan and Brontis Jodorowsky, will star in the film, which Jodorowsky plans to shoot in Chile this summer. His partner in Le Soleil, Xavier Guerrero Yamamoto, will produce. Uplink’s Takashi Asai is launching international sales on the project here at EFM. Asai has also co-produced films such as Derek Jarman’s Wittgenstein and Lou Ye’s Suzhou River.

The Forbidden Room Reviewed by David D’Arcy Canadian director Guy Maddin resurrects movie history by revering it and mocking it. The Forbidden Room is a tour de force that navigates a maze of magical melodrama. Even though Maddin’s aesthetic and his appeal come from his films’ journeys into the fragments of commercial cinema of earlier eras, The Forbidden Room — which opens the Forum in Berlin — is defiantly uncommercial like so many of those films. Yet this piece should reach festivals and arthouses worldwide that welcome whatever the director does. Sections could end up in some form in art galleries or museums, which are another platform for the director. Inscrutability and absurdity are built into Maddin’s plots. The effect in The Forbidden Room is compounded by the sheer number of stories. Inspired by a mandate from the Gospel of St John to “gather up the fragments that remain, lest nothing be lost”, the stories are preceded by the burlesque mock-instructional prologue, How To Take A Bath, written by the poet John Ashbery (his debut in cinema) and hosted by Maddin stalwart Louis Negin. Through that satirical portal, the audience goes deeper into the realm of parody, shifting in and out of narratives for more than two hours,

moving from one forbidden room to another. From the bathroom, Maddin takes you into a submarine, which just happens to be stuck at the bottom of the sea. Oxygen is limited but the captain does not want to be bothered, so desperate fervour in the face of imminent death fuels Maddin’s melodrama — and laughs, of course. From panic under the sea, Maddin moves to a mock-Wagnerian confrontation between the woodsman Cesare (Roy Dupuis) and subterranean disciples of the Red Wolf, who have kidnapped the young Margot (Clara Furey). Later we meet a doctor taken prisoner by women in skeleton suits, which leads us to an adventuress (a trope in silent films) whose body requires total reconstruction after a motorcycle accident, to the odd dynamic between a master (Mathieu Amalric) and servant (Udo Kier). Kier plays multiple roles in the film, as do Negin, Amalric, Geraldine Chaplin and Romano Orzari. Few directors can keep acting ensembles loyal over the years, and far fewer at Maddin’s budgets. As the director promised at the beginning, The Forbidden Room is an amalgamation of fragments, all the more fragmentary because the pulsating film itself decays and decomposes as we look at it. Those visual effects, complementing a cocktail of nostalgia, irreverence and sex, are as beguiling as anything in the movies
today. But The Forbidden Room, although sure to wind up in museums, is a movie, and it cannot entertain without the right performers to serve the stylised images. Maddin’s film-making, always collaborative is even more so here. His team, like his ensemble of actors, is as good as ever. The film is officially co-directed by Evan Johnson, who collaborated with Maddin as of 2012 on the Seances series of films made at the Pompidou Centre in Paris. Robert Kotyk is listed along with Maddin and Johnson as a screenwriter. Despite the shared credits, the style and tone of The Forbidden Room will clearly feel like Maddin to anyone who knows his earlier films. Much of that credit goes to cinematographers Stéphanie Weber Biron and Ben Kasulke, and to production designer Galen Johnson (who also wrote some of the music) for the look and feel of throbbing celluloid rustication throughout. Maddin has said he has tried “to achieve psychological realism with melodramatic methods”. No doubt he will be faulted for the length of The Forbidden Room but Maddin must be used to it. The visual splendour that gorges the audiences can be dumbfounding. Yet the director is more likely to build his public from the sheer ambition of the film than to lose that audience because of its length.

Going Clear: Scientology And The Prison Of Belief Reviewed by Anthony Kaufman If Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master presented an evocative fictional story inspired by Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard, muckraking documentary film-maker Alex Gibney offers this harrowing real-life counterpart: a searing exposé that reveals Scientology’s merciless ways. Gibney’s best work since the Catholic Church sex-abuse film Mea Maxima Culpa, Going Clear lays out a lucid argument against the organisation, combining interviews, archival footage and evocative visual illustrations. This slick and alarming HBO-produced documentary could make modest commercial inroads in international markets after its US cable TV premiere in March, given Scientology is a worldwide phenomenon known for its famous Alpha-male practitioners John Travolta and Tom Cruise. Based on the book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Lawrence Wright, the film examines several facets of the “religion”, beginning with Hubbard himself and then charting the evolution of Scientology from a cult phenomenon to a highly secretive, dangerously protective and “rapacious” billion-dollar industry. When seeing footage of Hubbard, it is easy to see where Philip Seymour Hoffman derived his magnetic performance in The Master: Hubbard, with orange hair and a big smile, revealing yel-

lowish teeth, comes across as arrogant and buoyantly egomaniacal. His few recorded interviews suggest a man on the edge of insanity. “Are you mad?” asks one interviewer. And Hubbard doesn’t deny it: “The only mad man is the one who doesn’t think he’s mad,” he replies with a smirk. Gibney also introduces the key technological instrument of Scientology: the “E-Meter”, a machine similar to a lie detector, which Scientologists employ in auditing sessions. The E-Meter becomes a tool in which emotional traumas are monitored, discussed and eventually “discharged”. After many such sessions, practitioners aspire to a point where they are “clear” of such inhibitions; hence the film’s title. Interspersed with Hubbard’s rise to fame, the film includes several revealing interviews with former members, including director Paul Haggis (Crash) who remained in the church for 35 years. Haggis’s candid testimony offers startling evidence of how an intelligent person could be completely duped — to a point. One of the most outrageous features of Scientology, we learn, is only revealed to practitioners after many years — and dollars — into the programme, involving a wild sci-fi story about Xenu, a Galactic Overlord, who dropped people into volcanoes some 75 million years ago. The story affords Gibney and his team a wonderful visual opportunity, which they take
up with aplomb, creating a delightfully psychedelic montage that combines layers of archival animation and stock footage. It also confirms effectively Scientology’s loopy ambitions. After Hubbard’s death, the film focuses on his second-in-command, Scientology lifer David Miscavige, an apparently abusive, powerhungry leader. The story details his greatest triumph — establishing tax-exempt status for the Church of Scientology — as well as his most egregious tactics to stay in power. Scandalmongers will pay special attention to the film’s section on Cruise, in which several former members testify the church instigated and exacerbated Cruise’s break-up from his wife, Nicole Kidman, who was considered a “Suppressive Person”.
porary drama Middle Of Nowhere) gets the most engaging moments out of King’s rousing public speeches and his strategy debates with aides. She does not shirk from showing that while King stuck to non-violence he was ready to exploit the violent tendencies of his adversaries (among them Alabama governor George Wallace, played with sly malice by Tim Roth). Sequences depicting the Selma marches — the first of which led to violent police attacks that were seen on national TV and helped
change the mood of the country — are fairly understated, when a more visceral approach might have given the film more emotional heft. The least dramatically successful moments come from the film’s brief attempts to show King’s personal side. Too often in what should have been revealingly intimate scenes between King and his wife (played by the UK’s Carmen Ejogo), the characters end up talking in speeches rather than dialogue.
Selma Reviewed by John Hazelton A brief but crucial episode in the 1960s civilrights movement is strikingly dramatised in Selma, a historical drama that feels topical thanks to recent events in Ferguson and other US cities. Though it may be a bit too stately to hit big at the box office, a terrific lead performance by David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King Jr will certainly help attract attention to this well-crafted independent production. A limited US release by Paramount has allowed the Pathé-financed film to capitalise on its awards profile. Independents that have licensed the film from Pathé for other territories may benefit less from the subject’s topicality but should get some leverage from the presence of UK-born Oyelowo. Scripted, as his first produced project, by UK writer Paul Webb (best known up to now for stage play Four Nights In Knaresborough), the film focuses on the time King and his team spent in Selma, Alabama, trying to ensure the local black population’s right to vote. The effort culminated in a march from Selma to Montgomery and eventually led to the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Director Ava DuVernay (who made contem-

Out Of Nature Reviewed by Mark Adams
Ode To My Father Reviewed by Jason Bechervaise The latest blockbuster to come out of South Korea feels a little forced at times, but despite its expansive scope spanning more than 60 years of tumultuous history, it does not buckle under the weight of its own ambitions. Rather, director JK Youn (Haeundae) does what he does best and delivers a compelling and moving feature that explores the separation of families following the Korean War. Ode To My Father’s primary target is the Korean audience, especially those of the older generation, and so it is somewhat localised to an extent. The film trumped The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies to top the local box office on its opening weekend, selling more than 1.1 million tickets ($8.2m), but Youn’s accessible approach along with strong visuals that span three different countries (Korea, Germany and Vietnam) could make it an appealing prospect overseas. The film begins in the present day as we are introduced to the leads: an elderly man called Duk-soo (Hwang Jung-min) along with his wife Young-ja (Kim Yunjin) and close friend Dal-goo (Oh Dal-su) who reside in the coastal city of Busan. The film soon flashes back to 1950 and the Korean War as Duk-soo — then a young boy — loses grip of his sister as he tries to board a US cargo freighter that is evacuating refugees in Hungnam, North Korea. His father turns back to search for the girl, but as the ship heads to Busan, Duk-soo is effectively left to support his mother and two younger siblings. The film then chronicles Duk-soo’s life as he moves to Germany to work in the mines, where he meets his wife who is a nurse, and his return to Korea before heading to Vietnam in the 1970s to take on more hazardous work. But Duk-soo never gives up on finding his sister and father, as the film takes an emotional turn when a local broadcaster assists families in locating loved ones in the early 1980s. Filming such a narrative is an audacious undertaking, but Youn’s team, which includes cinematographer Choi Young-hwan (The Berlin File, The Thieves) and the talented production designer Ryu Seong-hie (Mother, Oldboy, A Bittersweet Life) are up to the task, demonstrating yet again the standards Korean crews are capable of setting.

A Walter Mitty-esque comedy drama set against the stunning backdrop of the Norwegian great outdoors, Out Of Nature (Mot Naturen) is an engaging delve into one man’s troubled sub-conscious as he tries to tackle the issues — mainly sexually orientated — haunting his life. Notable thanks to a distinctive naked jogging scene, the film has a dry wit to balance its off-beat story, with co-director Ole Giaever also in front of the camera as protagonist Martin (that self-same naked runner) who carries pretty much the entire storyline. It is a physically demanding role that he handles impressively. Mild-mannered Martin is a put-upon worker who is ill at ease with his co-workers, unhappy with his wife and son and imagines sexual relationships with other women. In a bid for some sort of spiritual renewal — or at least escape from his monotonous life — he tells his wife he is going for a run in the mountains, planning to commune with nature and sleep there for a couple of nights. In his own mind he is a dynamic individual, attractive to women and a powerhouse at work, but alone in the mountains, reality clashes with his imagination. An ‘accident’ while sleeping rough (which harks back to bed-wetting memories as a child) sees him run bottomless for a while and while masturbating behind a tree he is almost caught by a rambler. But things really hit home when he finds two young women sleeping in a hikers’ hut. Against all the odds, one of them takes a shine to him and they are set for a sexual liaison, before his imagination kicks in and he finds himself unable to respond to this long-held fantasy. At heart, Martin is a rather childlike and selfish man who is yet to get to grips with the realities of his life, and it takes the tangible possibility of acting on his fantasies to spur him to return home with a different mindset. The clever balance co-directors Ole Giaever and Marte Vold achieve is to make Martin an endearing character despite his lusty longings, with his demanding — yet clumsy — run through the mountains offering an engaging series of problems and opportunities. Martin may escape the worries of society for a while but he still carries a certain amount of angst with him.
