Trade Center, W. and Savages. Paris-based Wild Bunch is launching sales on the film at AFM. The picture is in pre-production in Munich and principal photography will begin in January. Two-time Oscar nominee Joseph Cedar’s English-language debut Oppenheimer Strategies has buyers buzzing at AFM. Screen has learned The Solution Entertainment Group is handling sales. Richard Gere is attached to star in the drama, also written by Cedar, which will be produced by director Oren Moverman and Law-

IM Global to establish Free State Of Jones BY JEREMY KAY
Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey will star for Gary Ross in the $65m Civil War drama The Free State Of Jones, which has got tongues wagging at AFM. Production is set to begin in the first quarter of 2015 with Scott Stuber on board to produce the true story of Newton Knight, a southern unionist who fled the battlefield and rallied Confederate army deserters to his so-called Knight Company against the Confederacy. GFM has boarded sales on family animation Blazing Samurai, which is being produced by former vice-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment Yair Landau and The Lion King director Rob Minkoff. In order to fulfil his dream, he travels to a small town in ancient Japan, which turns out to be inhabited exclusively by cats. Landau and Minkoff are joined on the production team by Landau’s partner at Mass Animation, Susan Purcell. Guy Collins of GFM said: “We are always looking for high-end animation stories with great characters and Blazing Samurai hits all the go buttons. Clémence Poésy in The Ones Below
High anxiety David Farr’s feature directorial debut, The Ones Below, is a study of contemporary London, the loneliness of motherhood and the anxiety of the modern world. Wendy Mitchell visits the set
T
heatre veteran David Farr’s first feature came to him in a dream. He was in the midst of directing a Pinter play, and he remembers, “I was thinking about the anxieties of parenthood. I went to bed with a feeling of anxiety and maybe Pinter’s ghost was in the room… I woke up with an idea in its skeletal structure.” Farr, the father of two daughters, says he came up with a film that is essentially “about the loneliness of motherhood and the strange loneliness in big cities”. That early idea evolved into The Ones Below’s story of Kate (Clémence Poésy) and Justin (Stephen Campbell Moore), a disconnected couple expecting their first baby who live on the top floor of a north London house; Jon (David Morrissey) and Teresa (Laura Birn) move in below, and are also expecting a baby. Following a tragic accident, the couples’ lives become intertwined with disastrous consequences. Farr has been working in theatre for 20 years; he also wrote the screenplay for Joe Wright’s Hanna and after that BBC Films told him: “You should think about your first movie.” He first made the short Coolbox with the backing of BBC Films and the BFI Film Fund, and both were so impressed they came on board this first feature. Protagonist handles sales and Icon has already snapped up UK rights. Farr does not speak like a typical first-time film-maker, nor does he sound like a novice. He confesses to knowing more about film than theatre despite his background. “I’m a fan of European arthouse suspense films like
14 Screen International at AFM November 6, 2014
those by Chabrol, Polanski, Haneke. I sit in that European tradition.” He sees The Ones Below as “dark in some ways” but more as “deeply anxious… It explores certain paranoias”. It’s not a blood-and-guts type of thriller. “It’s a psychological suspense; it deals in terror not horror. Horror is something external like a zombie. Terror is something from within,” he says. It is also showing a side of modern London not often seen on screen. “Other than Nic Roeg, England hasn’t been making genre films set in normal life. In France you have hundreds of them,” he says. “I wanted to do something about the new London; it’s not about class.” The next stage Producer Nikki Parrott, who has most recently been concentrating on documentaries and documentary hybrids at Tigerlily Films, praises Farr’s collaborative nature, his vision for the film and excellent script. “A lot of people wanted to come in and read for it; the script is a real page-turner,” she says. Campbell Moore recalls: “When you read

it, it’s a hard, tough subject matter. It’s anxious… It’s a revenge tragedy in a way and deals with very contemporary characters.” The actor also praises Farr’s vision. “What’s great is working with someone who has written this story from his own mind. He’s achieved the film he wanted to achieve, he’s fighting for it.” In working with the cast, Farr had to shake off some of what he learned in two decades of theatre. “I made a conscious decision not to recreate my theatrical approach,” he explains. “Over-rehearsing for a film can be a mistake. With a play you rehearse for weeks and weeks and weeks. Actors can lose the freshness.” There were locations across London but most of the shoot was in a house in Canonbury, north London. “We wanted a London that was non-descript,” Parrott says. “We see Downton Abbey and the films about council estates but these are the people in the middle.” Parrott has a lot of praise for this firsttimer: “He’s a director that has a voice; that’s really important to me. It’s really good to work with someone who has a vision.” Farr might not give up on theatre but he has now “got the taste for film”. He has written John Le Carré TV mini-series Night Manager with the BBC and AMC to star Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston. Also, he has adapted Charles Dickens’ A Tale Of Two Cities for Origin and BBC Films, and has also written hot script HHhH, an adaptation of the novel by Laurent Binet about the attempted assassination of Nazi s official Reinhard Heydrich. ■

a smart partnership Former UK Film Council executive Jones, exec producer of The Usual Suspects and Gosford Park, initially met former Goldcrest Films exec Godfrey in 2010 through mutual contact David Schwimmer at the after-party for Run, Fat Boy, Run, which Jones produced. “It was Cannes the next summer that we happened to be sitting next to each other and we got chatting and I was telling Robert what I was doing,” says Godfrey. “I was doing very small lending at the time but it felt like we both had an appetite to grow. With Robert’s years of experience and relationships, it felt like we had good synergy and complementary skills to combine what we were doing. The mission was to go out and find good films from good producers and sales agents that required a piece of the financing.” Nimbleness was key for the duo from the outset. “We wanted to create something relatively simple that wouldn’t require a huge number of people or large overheads,” says Jones. “We tried to avoid complex tax mechanisms. You look at the size of the funds that are still going and the size of the funds at that time; they had to have a lot of people and large overheads. “What we wanted to do was have a small company that would be very light on its feet and that could respond quickly to projects it

ondon and Los Angeles-based production and finance outfit The Fyzz Facility, run by UK producers Robert Jones and Wayne Marc Godfrey, has backed 50 films to the tune of $40m since opening for business four years ago. And despite all those credits, and the duo’s years in the business, they are still motivated by new discoveries. “I like to think you keep learning new things, whether it’s being involved across financing by raising money through an SEIS scheme or being involved in mobile app opportunities,” says Jones. “Both things I wouldn’t have imagined myself doing five to 10 years ago.” He adds: “It’s about working with people you like and keeping things interesting. The business is ever changing. It’d be dangerous to set a course and not divert because the business is a lot bigger than any individual. You have to keep your finger near the pulse and be responsive to trends.” The company invests in diverse films through a range of finance including development, bridging, senior debt, tax credit and gap funding. These films include Toronto 2014 drama Cake, starring Jennifer Aniston; UK comedy The Hooligan Factory from Nick Nevern and Jason Maza; and Martin Scorsese’s upcoming thriller Silence, set to star Liam Neeson and Andrew Garfield, which will mark the company’s fourth collaboration with US powerhouse Emmett/ Furla Films.

received while being flexible and pragmatic.” The duo engaged investors through a series of presentations about the film business and investment. “Of course, film investment is traditionally looked at as high risk and emotionally driven but we showed people where we thought it could work for them,” says Jones. “We grew a pool of investors that understand how we work and that when we bring an opportunity to them it qualifies with the criteria we’ve already set and we live by.” Simplicity and transparency are key to ensuring that trust. “It’s about keeping deals relatively simple
by having a small team and ensuring that once we’re involved we respond quickly and help the films close. We’re very upfront. We don’t sit on a pile of cash; what we have is a pool of educated investors,” adds Godfrey. Recent investments include Robert De Niro heist thriller Bus 657 (on which Fyzz is bringing close to one-third of the film’s finance); Kurt Russell cowboy epic Bone Tomahawk; Tommy Wirkola’s Norwegian comedy-horror Dead Snow 2: Red Vs Dead; and Talulah Riley’s directorial debut Scottish Mussel, currently shooting in Scotland. A growing focus for Fyzz will be the development and backing of in-house UK productions. These include former Screen Star of Tomorrow Stephen Fingleton’s Blacklist thriller The Survivalist, now in post-production; upcoming drama A Patch Of Fog; thriller The Chinaman, David Marconi’s adaptation of Stephen Leather’s wellreceived novel; and Alleycats, a UK thriller set in the world of illegal cycle racing. That said, both execs continue to produce separately: Jones recently produced Danny Boyle’s TV series Babylon and has developments with Film4. Also important to the company’s next stage is Los Angeles expansion. The company now has nine full-time staff but will add at least one body on the ground in Los Angeles. “More than 50% of our product flow is coming from America,” says Godfrey. “We’ve got to have a presence there and we’ve got to have more feet on the ground driving that bit s forward.” n

INTERVIEW EHUD BLEIBERG
Posthumous

In preproduction. ■ Strange Blood XLrator to release the horror tale in the US. First market screening.
The band leader Ehud Bleiberg looks back on his 30-year career, telling Jeremy Kay about his AFM slate and how he is adapting to new distribution models
E
hud Bleiberg fears complacency, even after 30 years in the business and more than 40 producer and executive producer credits under his belt, including Un Certain Regard Fipresci winner The Band’s Visit and Berlinale selection Adam Resurrected. “You realise that in one second everything can disappear and that gives you the strength to take risks,” says the Jerusalem-born producer and sales agent. He has just spoken about his service in two wars in the Israel Defense Forces in the 1970s. “It’s only film. It’s only money.” Bleiberg got into film after leaving Hebrew University and working in advertising and real estate. “I loved Italian cinema and one night after seeing [Paolo Taviani’s] The Night Of San Lorenzo I told a friend I was going to make films.” He went to film school in Jerusalem, put money into Chozeh Ahavah and Himmo, King Of Jerusalem, through which he met his lifelong friend Yoram Kaniuk, the author of Adam Resurrected. When Bleiberg met Yitzhak Ginsberg he had just tried his hand at licensing. “[Himmo] sold to 40 countries and I understood there was a global market.” Under the Dream Entertainment banner, Bleiberg and Ginsberg made the local hit Tel Aviv Stories and moved to Los Angeles to make English-language films. After 15 years together the partners engineered a complicated separation. Bleiberg

launched his self-titled venture later that year, in 2005. Since then, films have not been in short supply and so far Bleiberg cites Adam Resurrected as his crowning achievement as a producer. “I love the film. It will stay forever.” The $10m Holocaust story bears great personal significance — the family of Bleiberg’s father suffered terrible losses at Treblinka extermination camp, while the source material was the novel by his late, great friend Kaniuk. He chased the rights for the best part of a decade, partnering with German producer Werner Wirsing and hiring Paul Schrader to direct from Noah Stollman’s screenplay. Some time later he would watch with pride as the film played Telluride, Toronto, Berlin and other festivals. Cultivating freedom Bleiberg likes to keep things fresh. “I do a film in Israel once every two years. I do genre films, I do arthouse films and occasionally big films. I don’t want to be a slave to my operation, I want to be free to create.” Enabling Bleiberg to create is a small team that includes Nick Donnermeyer, operations and deliveries head Melanie Kollar and sales and development executive Tahira Martemucci. Donnermeyer runs Compound B — the genre label set up by Bleiberg in 2007 — and the acquisi-
The Band’s Visit
tions, development and marketing specialist and former office assistant has rewarded his employer’s faith. “Now he’s running that side of the company and is heavily involved in all of our productions. I greatly value his opinion.” Bleiberg produced The Iceman and is reuniting with Millennium Films on a remake of Hunting Elephants, the Jewish comedy smash Bleiberg produced and sold that starred Patrick Stewart and Bleiberg’s friend Sasson Gabai from The Band’s Visit. Nu Image will start sales on the remake at AFM. Red Granite’s new Blue Box International label will be selling The Curse Of Sleeping Beauty and Bleiberg represents US rights. He is adapting to a changing industry. “If you want to survive, you have to think out of the box. The buyers need to feed the pipeline and the pipeline today is VoD. “The Netflix and DIRECTVs of this world changed habits — they have become broadcasters,” he says. “They’re making series, so I got the idea of how I could get into this world.” The sales roster in Santa Monica is diverse (see box, above) and includes the second screen app-based thriller iLived. “Everybody’s telling you to turn off your mobile in the theatre. I am going to have the first US film to tell you to turn it on.” Bleiberg narrows his eyes. “People can sit in front of their computer and watch anything they want — you need to compete with that. It’s not easy but you need to create s opportunities.” ■
