As the 70th Cannes Film Festival gets underway, the evolution of the event and the industry at large will be a hot topic among attendees. The rise of Netflix and Amazon Studios has sent traditional film buyers into survival mode as they scramble to compete with deep-pocketed rivals with the wherewithal to bypass the theatrical model. Netflix in particular is writ large over the festival. Two large billboards of the company’s first Competition selections Okja and The Meyerowitz Stories (New And Selected) adorn the Croisette, and the streaming platform’s running battle with the French theatrical sector has forced festival head Thierry Frémaux to effect a dramatic rule change. From 2018, all Competition submissions must commit to a French theatrical release, a measure designed to appease those who fear Netflix’s modus operandi remains incompatible with France’s strict chronology laws. This has provoked fierce debate within the French industry over whether or not its laws should be amended, and it remains to be seen what stance French president Emmanuel Macron will take. The festival finds itself at a critical juncture. Frémaux has welcomed Netflix and Amazon, yet the festival finds itself in the crosshairs of a feud pitting the old against the new.
the project will be launched in earnest in Cannes. The team is aiming for the film to be ready in time for next year’s festival. Producer Mallet- Guy told Screen: “This is my third collaboration with Asghar Farhadi and I’m still amazed by the intensity and subtlety of his work. We’ve got a thrilling story, great locations and a five-star cast. It’s Asghar’s most commercial film to date and I’m looking forward to bringing it to the largest audience possible.”

Arrow Films has snapped up UK rights to Ismael’s Ghosts, the opening film of this year’s festival, which is being sold by Wild Bunch. The UK distributor is planning to release it in the UK either later in the year or in early 2018. Directed by Arnaud Desplechin, Ismael’s Ghosts stars Mathieu Amalric, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Marion Cotillard and Louis Garrel. It is about a reclusive filmmaker whose life is sent into a tailspin by the return of a former lover. The film was pre-bought for the US by Magnolia last year. “We see it as a major arthouse theatrical release for the UK,” said Tom Stewart, acquisitions director at Arrow. The ambitious UK company now releases selected films in the US as well as in the UK. It opens Whisky Galore in the UK this week.

Workshop draws Sword BY LIZ SHACKLETON
Hong Kong-based Distribution Workshop has picked up international rights to martial-arts action title The Hidden Sword, directed by Xu Haofeng. Starring Zhang Aoyue (The Final Master), Jessie Li (Port Of Call) and Chen Kuan Tai (14 Blades), the film is now in postproduction for tentative release towards the end of the year. Based on Xu’s own novella, the film is set in the 1930s when a special sword has helped the Chinese army win the war against Japan. The old man who created the sword tries to go into hiding with his family, but eventually the outside world starts to intrude. Xu has also directed critically acclaimed films such as The Sword Identity (2011), Judge Archer (2012) and The Final Master (2015), and co-wrote the screenplay for The Grandmaster (2013) with Wong Kar Wai. The Final Master, which Xu considers his first commercial film, won best action choreography at the Golden Horse Awards. Other titles on Distribution Workshop’s Cannes slate include Yuen Woo-ping’s martial-arts action fantasy The Thousand Faces Of Dunjia, Ann Hui’s historical drama Our Time Will Come and Adrian Kwan’s musical drama Find Your Voice, starring Andy Lau, which are all in postproduction.
THE EYES HAVE IT Nicolas Cage and Robin Tunney star in thriller Looking Glass. Works punches with Thumper, Freak Show BY ANDREAS WISEMAN
Arriving in Cannes under new ownership, The Works International has boarded international sales rights to Trudie Styler’s Berlin title Freak Show and Jordan Ross’s Tribeca title Thumper. Alex Lawther, Abigail Breslin and Bette Midler star in the former, a Celine Rattray-produced comedy drama about a boy who decides to run for homecoming queen at his ultra-conservative high school.
Thumper, which is executiveproduced by Cary Fukunaga and stars Eliza Taylor, Ben Feldman and Lena Headey, follows a group of teens who are lured into working for a dangerous drug dealer. A new girl arrives who hides a dangerous secret that will change their lives forever. This is the first Cannes for The Works Group under its new ownership team of Mick Southworth, Deepak Sikka, Martin McCabe
and Brooke Lyndon-Stanford, who acquired the sales and distribution outfit from financier and producer Costa Theo last year. The handover also saw the departure of longtime CEO Laurence Gornall. In recent years The Works has scaled back its UK distribution operations but it is expected to remain active in sales, financing and production. Clare Crean continues to spearhead the international sales team.
Carnaby International has acquired the worldwide sales rights to children’s piracy title Captain Pugwash, which will set sail next year as a live-action, family comedy-adventure. The deal was brokered by Carnaby International joint CEO Sean O’Kelly with Elliot Jenkins of Atticus Pictures. With cast set to be announced imminently, the feature tells an origin story that is set in the Golden Age of Piracy, and spins the adventures of cowardly con-artist Pugwash. The film will be written and directed by Berlin Crystal Bear winner John Hay and produced by Bafta-nominated Jenkins. Created by John Ryan in the late 1950s, Captain Pugwash has spawned an animated TV series and dozens of books. Producer Jenkins says: “Just as Paddington refreshed a much-loved British brand without losing its charm, we’re going to do the same, albeit with a bit more of a mischievous indie spirit.” O’Kelly said: “We are delighted to be working with such a talented team on a fresh, exciting reboot of an iconic title.” Andreas Wiseman

Ablaze sparks Father To Son BY LIZ SHACKLETON
Taiwan’s Ablaze Image has picked up international rights to Hsiao Yachuan’s Father To Son, produced by Hou Hsiao-hsien. Both filmmakers have a long association with Cannes. Hsiao’s Mirror Image was selected for Directors’ Fortnight in 2001, while Hou won best director at Cannes in 2015 for The Assassin. Father To Son follows two journeys of self-reconciliation: a 60-year-old man with a serious illness travels to Japan to search for the father who abandoned him 50 years ago, while a young man connected to his past arrives in Taiwan. Now in post-production for release in autumn 2017, the film stars Michael JQ Huang, Chuang Kai-Hsun, Aria Wang and Lu Hsueh-Feng. Ablaze is also selling Chen Yuhsun’s The Village Of No Return, which was released in Taiwan and China over Chinese New Year.

Highs and lows, but the magic endures Few living producers are more synonymous with the world’s most revered festival than Jeremy Thomas, an Oscar winner for The Last Emperor, who has had 15 films in Cannes’ official selection. “I have a magnet pulling me here,” beams the Recorded Picture Company founder, who first attended in 1971 when he was 21. Almost 40 years since he met his Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence director Nagisa Oshima at the festival, Thomas is back on the Croisette with another Japanese filmmaker, Takashi Miike, whose Blade Of The Immortal screens out of competition. Thomas knows that as much as it is a celebration of cinema, Cannes has its fair share of pitfalls. “Cutting through the noise is a craft. You have to be disciplined. There are many casualties in Cannes; it’s a very easy place to party too hard. The best salesmen are down on the Croisette at six in the morning and in bed at 10pm.”

Thomas himself has been caught in the Croisette crosshairs. Twice he was at the centre of jury infamy, first when he sat on the 1987 Competition jury, which contentiously awarded the Palme d’Or to Maurice Pialat’s Under The Sun Of Satan. “It was very bad,” recalls Thomas, whose fellow jurors included Russian maverick Elem Klimov, Jerzy Skolimowski and
Norman Mailer. “People were very passionate about it. Not one of those jury members was a pushover. Klimov was very tough.” In 1996, Thomas found himself in the eye of another Cannes storm when David Cronenberg’s Crash, on which he was an executive producer, caused a major stir. Jury president Francis Ford Coppola made his disapproval of the film
public, and UK critic Alexander Walker stormed out of the film’s press conference before describing it as “beyond the bounds of depravity” in the headline of his column. The film was subsequently banned by the London borough of Westminster. “I’ve been eaten up and spat out,” says Thomas, who cites the
critical savaging of the Johnny Depp-directed The Brave as another challenging moment. But for the uber-producer — who once got a film fully financed with the stroke of a pen at the festival (Francis Bouygues signed a $40m cheque for Thomas and Bernardo Bertolucci’s Little Buddha there and then) — the highs have outduelled the lows. And the magic endures. “If you’re in the business, you’ve got to be there,” he says. “And you need to respect the real affection for rigorousness and selectivity about films, which is uniquely Cannes. It’s something unattainable. You can’t buy it.”

Cannes Decades 1946-55 As Cannes Film Festival celebrates its 70th edition, Nikki Baughan turns the spotlight on each decade. Today, it’s all about the years from 1946 to 1955, which included the discovery of Brigitte Bardot

riginally conceived by French historian Philippe Erlanger as a response to Hitler and Mussolini’s manipulation of Venice Film Festival, the first edition of the ‘International Film Festival’ opened in Cannes on September 1, 1939 — and lasted until France entered the Second World War two days later. In the summer of 1945, funds were raised through public subscription to resurrect the festival and the first event proper was held in 1946, showcasing 40 features and more than 50 shorts across 15 days. The focus was on world cinema, with a particular emphasis on Italian and neorealism; films included Roberto Rossellini’s Rome, Open City and Alessandro Blasetti’s Un Giorno Nella Vita, alongside works such as Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious, David Lean’s Brief Encounter and Billy Wilder’s The Lost Weekend. The festival was not held in 1948 and 1950 because of budgetary issues, but returned in 1951 with a new spring slot to avoid conflict with Venice. By the 1950s, the festival was finding its own identity, even as the Cold War led to tensions between east and west rising once again. Light relief came courtesy of French actresses Brigitte Bardot — discovered in Cannes in 1953 wearing a bikini on the beach — and, a year later, actress Simone Silva, whose decision to go topless at a photocall caused a scrum, resulting in several broken bones. In 1955, the Palme d’Or was introduced, replacing the Grand Prix du Festival, which had been in place since the festival’s inception. At the 2002 festival, organisers presented part of the original selection from the thwarted 1939 event to a jury, who awarded the Palme in s retrospect to Cecil B DeMille’s Union Pacific. ■

Wind River Reviewed by Fionnuala Halligan Taylor Sheridan directs for the first time in Wind River, a film that is identifiable immediately as the work of the man who wrote Sicario (2015) and Hell Or High Water (2016). Combustible, masculine and tense, it demonstrates both that Sheridan can direct with ease and how eminently filmable his written work continues to be. The story of a game tracker in Wyoming (Jeremy Renner) who becomes entangled in a murder on a Native American reservation (the titular Wind River), it shares some themes and character types with Sheridan’s earlier work; its rugged, snowy landscapes where one man faces the frontier occupy every inch of the screen. Headlined by Renner and Elizabeth Olsen — as an inexperienced FBI investigator in over her head, much like Emily Blunt in Sicario — Wind River should have no problem attracting followers of Sheridan’s work: Hell Or High Water was one of the best-performing independent films of 2016. Those who had problems with Sicario may find themselves knocking up against the same issues here, but this is a solid thriller that feels at once like a studio release and an independent awards contender. Sheridan sets a chilly tone for his Utah-shot film with a moonlight opening sequence in which a barefoot woman runs desperately for

her life through the snow. We then encounter Renner’s Cory Lambert, a tracker who hunts predators for the local wildlife department. Soon, he will discover her frozen body, immediately identifying the corpse as an 18-year-old girl from the reservation called Natalie (Kelsey Asbille). Renner is strong throughout as a closed-off, instinctive man with a past: he is separated from his Native American wife, with whom he maintains an uneasy relationship, and is the proud father of a young boy. Lambert’s links with the local community and its independent police force are both lifelong and strong. When newbie FBI investigator Jane Banner (Olsen) is dispatched from Las Vegas to take over the investigation, she quickly realises she is out of her depth in more ways than one — those court shoes are not going to handle the sub-zero temperatures on snowmobile rides that give the film a jolt of pure adrenaline. But she is smart enough to call on Cory for help. While he is honest with her, he also has his own agenda. Giving Natalie’s father (Graham Greene) a fairly lengthy sermon in grief counselling is perhaps excessively expositional, but it does let the viewer know that Cory is wracked with guilt over the loss of his daughter, who was Natalie’s friend. As a director, Sheridan opens his camera wide to the freezing vistas of wild Wyoming. He
draws a solid, ballast-like performance from Renner as a man who struggles internally but is finely attuned to his external surroundings. Life on the reservation is depicted as bleak and hopeless. This is a film concerned with man’s quest to protect his family and dominate his surroundings. Olsen’s Banner may be smart, but she is another female figure who needs to be watched over — Sheridan’s films, to date, have not exactly been feminist-friendly. They are, however, also couched in the fluent language of big-screen drama. Wind River can be thrilling and it owns the ability to surprise and shock throughout. When the film approaches its denouement, delivered in flashback, it bares its teeth to become extremely violent. The body count suddenly rises among people we have barely met, making an extended interlude set on a mountain top seem a little excessive. Music, from Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, seems to underline the isolation and alienation of the reservation, to speak of the sadness of a people set apart. Beating in tune with the blowy, widescreen photography, Wind River has a heart. It may be a very male heart, and it may beat a little too loosely to succeed completely as a drama, but it enriches this film and makes Taylor Sheridan’s directorial debut more than just another action thriller.

CANNES AT 70 THIERRY FREMAUX
Prince of the Palais A
fter rising up the ranks of the Institut Lumiere, devoted to the preservation of the world’s cinema heritage, in his home city of Lyon, Thierry Frémaux was appointed artistic director of Cannes in 2000. His first official selection was for the 57th edition in 2004, in which a jury presided over by Quentin Tarantino awarded Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 the Palme d’Or. In 2007, he was appointed delegate general, a role that covers both the artistic direction and overall management of the festival.
Thierry Frémaux and Kristen Stewart arrive at last year’s opening gala dinner; (below) Apocalypse Now — the screening that got away
What are your earliest memories of Cannes? Watching it on TV at home. I have one particular recollection of the scandal surrounding the screening of La Grande Bouffe [in 1973]; the cast and crew being insulted by spectators as they left the theatre and the director, Marco Ferreri, fighting with journalists. When did you first attend the festival? My first real Cannes was in 1979. I had just got my driving licence and set off from Lyon for the Croisette by car. I didn’t see a single film. I had no idea how to get into screenings but all that didn’t matter — I was there at the heart of the party. At night, I would park in a service station and sleep in my car. It was the year of Apocalypse Now. I was desperate to see it; it was several months before I finally did. What were your habits as a regular festival-goer before joining the festival team? I was in screenings from morning to night. I was one of those people roaming the pavements in front of the Palais at eight in the morning, demanding a place. Screenings were the only thing that mattered. The dinners — they were important too — as well as watching football matches in hotel rooms. Cannes is also about friendship. Nothing compares to the experience of spending 10 days on the Croisette. Even with the invention of Skype and smartphones, nothing beats a glass of Burgundy. How did your life change when you became artistic director in 2001? I was a beggar and I became a prince.

‘I sometimes dream of being a simple festivalgoer again: driving down, discovering films, sleeping in service stations’ Thierry Frémaux
But I never forget that the people in the upper circle today are just like me, passionate about cinema and about Cannes. I love to walk around, stopping for coffee with friends, contemplating all the people who are fascinated by the festival without being able to see the films. I sometimes dream of becoming a simple festival-goer again: driving down, discovering films, sleeping in service stations. How do you see the festival fitting into the global cinema ecosystem? Even when I wasn’t involved personally with the festival, I always had this great love for Cannes — as well as Venice and Berlin — and I have been a great defender of it because
it carries an enormous weight that goes beyond its central function of selecting and showing films. I see it as a collective event. It doesn’t belong to us, but rather to all those people who come together to make it what it is: artists, producers, sales agents, industry professionals, cinephiles and tourists. Are there any directors you’re proud to have discovered? I’m proud to have accompanied the emergence of cinema from Latin America, Mexico, Argentina, Romania, Korea and the Middle East. But I don’t like the idea of claiming discoveries. Of course, Laszlo Nemes bowled over Cannes with his first feature [[Son Of Saul]. But that was not our doing, it was down to the film. Are there films that you regret not selecting? Lots, but I won’t tell you which ones.
What have been your biggest successes during your Cannes reign? I’m not sure I’m the right person to ask. That said, when Gilles Jacob asked me to join him, I wasn’t sure I was capable of succeeding him. People told me: “Mission impossible!” But I think I can say Cannes has continued to fulfil its mission and has a future, and I’m proud of that. When you see the pace of change, do you ever wonder whether cinema will exist in 70 years’ time? Since its beginnings, people have been announcing the death of cinema, but it has always survived. Of course, the world is changing, practices are evolving. My children spend their time surfing the net, but if I say we are going to the cinema on a Saturday they jump for joy. It’s like going to a theatre, a stadium or a concert. I love Bruce Springsteen’s records but he is even better in concert. Cinema is the same. Cannes Film Festival is the equivas lent of 15 concerts a day. ■

ANALYSIS GENRE FILMS
From Russia with love From thrillers and horrors to epic period dramas and sci-fi, Russian genre films are proving a hit with international buyers. Geoffrey Macnab reports on how the country’s productions are going global
I
t is more than 60 years since Kenneth Rive, founder of UK company Gala Films, ventured to Moscow to sign an agreement that made him the Soviet Union’s sole distributor of Russian films in the UK. Since then, Russian films have continued to surface in UK cinemas but have tended to be works by big-name auteurs such as Andrei Tarkovsky, Elem Klimov or even, in revival, Sergei Eisenstein. One trend, though, that has become noticeable is that Russian genre movies are more visible both in the UK and the international marketplace. A decade ago, Timur Bekmambetov’s fantasies Night Watch (2004) and Day Watch (2005) were breakout hits — examples of Russian box-office successes that sold widely and caught the attention of the Hollywood studios. However, it was arguably only after the Russian financial crisis of 2014, as the rouble plummeted in value against other currencies, that local producers became aware they needed to target their films at the international market. “The Russian market had never really thought of international sales before,” says Vadim Vereschagin, senior vice president of distribution at Central Partnership. “Nobody had realised there was this whole worldwide marketplace.” Steppiong out Russian producers knew that getting a return on their investment in Russia was becoming increasingly difficult. Together with sales agents, they began thinking about foreign audiences, a move that is starting to pay off. “We have noticed the growing interest from international buyers,” says Dmitry Litvinov, CEO of sales agent Planeta Inform. The firm has recently handled genre titles including Metro, Guardians, Quackerz and The Bride. In particular, he says China and other Asian markets are voracious buyers of Russian fare, even handing them a theatrical release. It has not gone unnoticed in Russia that the biggest box-office hits around the world right now are genre titles. “We see that genre films occupy the major part of the [worldwide] market” points out Dmitry Rudovsky, co-founder of Art Pictures Media with Stalingrad director Fedor Bondarchuk.

Guardians
Bondarchuk’s sci-fi epic Attraction has sold to more than 70 countries and earned $3m-plus in minimum guarantee payment. “That covered almost half our production costs,” says Rudovsky. Also catching the imagination of international buyers is Andrey Kravchuk’s big-budget Viking, produced by Studio TriTe, the company founded by Nikita Mikhalkov. UK independent distributor Arrow Films has acquired it along with three other Russian genre films in the past 18 months: Battle For Moscow (aka Panfilov’s 28) Battle For Sevastopol and Battalion. Arrow has also picked up Russian arthouse title Zoology, which it will release in the UK, US and Canada later in the year. These will all be shown in their original Russianlanguage versions. “The production values are excellent. They don’t have to be $20m or $30m productions,” says Tom Stewart, acquisitions director of Arrow. He adds that some films, like Battalion and Battle For Sevastopol, are even sold in UK supermarkets. “There’s no doubt that homeentertainment, retail and pay-TV are the three strong areas the audience will buy into.” He talks of the “very close-knit Russian companies who all know each other
very well” and operate at film markets in a similar way to the Scandinavians. But Vereschagin cautions against the idea the Russian industry is mass producing big historical epics such as Viking and Ivan Shurkhovetskiy’s Furious (which is being sold in the Marché and has already been bought by Well Go USA). Films of this scale remain relatively rare. Nonetheless, disaster movies, thrillers and horror pictures are being turned out in increasing numbers. Animation is booming, with Wizart doing brisk business with Sheep & Wolves. Sales agents and distributors including Russian World Vision (which handled Battalion and Battle For Moscow), Central Partnership and Planeta Inform are selling populist genre fare. Vereschagin estimates there are around 100 Russian movies being sold in the marketplace. The territory’s films are also attracting the attention of international sales agents. US outfit Covert Media has been doing good business through its international sales label Lexica Films on two Russian-language genre pieces, disaster film Earthquake and fantasy thriller The Night Watchmen. Viking These films were
‘The production values are excellent. They don’t have to be $20m or $30m productions’ Tom Stewart, Arrow Films
brought to the company by its Russian consultant Mila Rozanova, herself a producer on Battle For Sevastopol. Liz Kim Schwan, Covert’s president of international sales, points to a “new wave” of Russian movies. Like Arrow’s Stewart, she talks of the high production values of the Russian movies and of their “self-aware, sophisticated humour”. The actors may not be recognisable to buyers, says Schwan, but the films’ trailers “speak for themselves”. The language remains an obstacle, however, as does the lack of a star system. The deals being done are more likely to be for digital and VoD than for theatrical. Nevertheless, Russia is one of the few countries with the technical expertise to produce epic action, period and sci-fi movies with top production values — and that is why the Russian presence at markets such as Cannes, Berlin and s AFM looks set to keep on growing. ■
