She describes the move as being driven by her feelings for independent auteur cinema with international appeal. “I wanted to get back to the sort of films I love,” said Rouault. “Celluloid is a company that continues to ferret out new talents while working with established artists like Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Jacques Audiard and Jafar Panahi.” At her first AFM for Celluloid Dreams, Rouault is introducing Clive Owen thriller Andorra to the market as well as 4K remastered versions of Jacques Audiard’s 1994 See How They Fall and Jonathan Demme’s 1984 Talking Heads documentary Stop Making Sense. SPOTLIGHT STARS OF TOMORROW 2016
Screen International’s 2016 Stars of Tomorrow, photographed at London’s National Film Theatre
A map to the Stars In its 13th edition, Screen’s Stars of Tomorrow continues to seek out and celebrate the most promising young UK acting, writing, producing and directing talent. Fionnuala Halligan reports
W
e are very pleased to introduce new UK talent as part of Screen International’s AFM dailies. As you’ll see, 2016 is a particularly exciting year: some of the names highlighted in these pages may ring a bell, but most you will be meeting for the first time — and definitely not the last. In 2015, we highlighted Joe Alwyn and Charlie Heaton on the cover of our Stars of Tomorrow issue. Today, you’ll know them as the stars of Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk and Stranger Things/As You Are respectively. This year, Florence Pugh will be inescapable as she captivates in the low-budget UK feature Lady Macbeth, but other talents will sneak up. Young Tom Taylor, for example, is set to star in The Dark Tower, while Sope Dirisu is impressing audiences at London’s Donmar Warehouse as Mohammed Ali in stage play
‘Remember where you first heard about these young actors’ One Night In Miami. Fionn Whitehead (Dunkirk), Sennia Nanua (The Girl With All The Gifts), Anthony Boyle (Harry Potter And The Cursed Child stage play) — remember where you first heard about these young actors. Our behind-the-camera talent also sparkles: Chris Urch wrote the script for Andrew Haigh’s untitled Alexander McQueen project, set to star Jack O’Connell, while his fellow writer Joe Murtagh is working closely with Michael Fassbender’s DMC Film. All our writers and directors are caught here before they make the leap to features: expect their shorts to win
16 Screen International at AFM November 4, 2016
awards as they go out across the world this year. Screen International’s UK and Ireland Stars of Tomorrow is now in its 13th year, and it’s clearly a lucky one. Our very first edition back in 1994 highlighted Benedict Cumberbatch; Eddie Redmayne appeared in 2005; Tom Hiddleston in 2008; John Boyega in 2011; and there have been many more besides. The directors highlighted include Haigh and Andrea Arnold; screenwriter Abi Morgan also appeared here at an early stage of her career. A hearty congratulations to the Stars chosen in 2016 — from around 400 candidates — and all the best to them for continued success in their chosen fields. We will enjoy, as usual, keeping an eye on them as they go from strength to strength. »

SPOTLIGHT STARS OF TOMORROW 2016
THE ACTORS Florence Pugh Born in Oxford, 20-year-old Florence Pugh made her debut in Carol Morley’s The Falling after the film-maker sent out an open call to schools in Oxford and London; Pugh only made her tape at the last minute after being persuaded by her mother. She has since translated what she learnt on The Falling into a stunning lead performance in Toronto/San Sebastian/London competitor Lady Macbeth, and has several projects in the pipeline.
Tom Taylor
Arnold Oceng
Three years ago, 15-year-old Surrey-based Tom Taylor stopped attending drama school until his former teacher told him an agent was visiting; Taylor returned to audition, secured representation and went on to star in The Last Kingdom and Doctor Foster for the BBC. He then auditioned seven times for Nikolaj Arcel’s Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower, before being cast as Jake Chambers, the protégé of Roland Deschain, aka The Gunslinger (Idris Elba).
After arriving in London from Uganda at the age of one, Arnold Oceng pursued an acting career and starred in BBC series Grange Hill between 1999 and 2004. Noel Clarke’s Adulthood was the next notable step, and small roles in independent UK films such as 4.3.2.1. and My Brother The Devil followed, before appearing alongside Reese Witherspoon in The Good Lie. He has most recently been seen in Brotherhood, the final part of Clarke’s urban trilogy.

Morfydd Clark After graduating from the National Youth Theatre of Wales and Drama Centre London, Morfydd Clark appeared in BBC drama A Poet In New York, Channel 4’s New Worlds and, on film, in Carol Morley’s The Falling. She then enjoyed a run of theatre performances, including in Gary Owen’s Olivier-nominated Violence And Son, and returned to the big screen in Whit Stilman’s Love & Friendship. She is currently playing Cordelia in Deborah Warner’s King Lear at London’s Old Vic theatre. Upcoming projects The Prevailing Winds (short, dir. Adam Butcher), Interlude In Prague (dir. John Stephenson) Contact Kate Staddon, Curtis Brown kate.staddon@curtisbrown.co.uk

Jodie Comer Originally from Liverpool, 23-year-old Jodie Comer rose to prominence in BBC legal drama Justice, going on to star in Good Cop, My Mad Fat Diary and BBC3’s first major online drama thriller Thirteen, in which she played a young woman trying to fit back into normal society after being abducted. She also starred as a homewrecking mistress in BBC1’s Doctor Foster, which is soon to return for a second season. Upcoming projects Rillington Place (TV, BBC), The White Princess (TV, Starz), Doctor Foster (TV, BBC), Steven (dir. Hannah JohnKamen Born in Beverley, Yorkshire, but now based in London, Hannah John-Kamen took a part in Whitechapel during her third year at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. After graduating, she appeared in TV shows Black Mirror and The Hour, before her big break as bounty hunter Dutch in Killjoys. Earlier this year, Steven Spielberg cast John-Kamen in his forthcoming adaptation of Ernest Cline’s bestselling novel Ready Player One. Upcoming projects Ready Player One (dir. Steven Spielberg) Contact Suzy Kenway, Scott Marshall Partners suzy@scottmarshall.co.uk
Leah Harvey
Having graduated from the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in 2011, Josh O’Connor believes that extended runs on television shows have been an “important learning curve” for his craft. The Cheltenham-born actor, based in London, has starred in Ripper Street, Peaky Blinders and, most recently, The Durrells. He has also starred on the big screen in titles including Florence Foster Jenkins, which reunited him with The Program director Stephen Frears, Lone Scherfig’s The Riot Club and Jeppe Ronde’s intense suicide drama Bridgend.
Despite the fact 22-year-old Londoner Leah Harvey only graduated from LAMDA this summer, she has already shot a lead role in Michael Winterbottom’s latest feature, On The Road, and is starring in Phyllida Lloyd’s The Tempest at London’s Donmar Warehouse theatre. Harvey had previously auditioned for Dominic Dromgoole’s production of The Tempest, which would have meant leaving LAMDA early; the role did not pan out but opened the door to other opportunities.
Upcoming projects Sweet Maddie Stone (short, dir. Brady Hood), Billionaire Boys Club (dirs. James Cox, Captain Mauzner), Brighton Beach (dir. David Gutnik)
Upcoming projects God’s Own Country (dir. Francis Lee), The Durrells (TV, ITV)

Having been discovered while still at Eton College and immediately signed up to The Artists Partnership, Barney Harris has learnt his craft on the job, including a role as Prince Ned in Dominic Cooke’s The Hollow Crown, starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Director Ang Lee was the next to sign up Harris for this year’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, in which he features alongside 2015 Star of Tomorrow Joe Alwyn.

Sennia Nanua
Anthony Boyle
Fionn Whitehead
After leaving school at 16, Anthony Boyle was doing “anything and everything I could” as an actor when a teacher at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama saw him perform at the Lyric Drama School in Belfast and invited him to audition. Boyle eventually spent three years studying there before leaving, at age 22, to play Scorpius Malfoy in Harry Potter And The Cursed Child, the twopart West End play in which he will feature until May 2017.
Fionn Whitehead (pronounced Finn) made casting headlines when, as an unknown, he landed a pivotal role in Christopher Nolan’s star-studded Second World War epic Dunkirk, set for release next July. He follows that up with another headline casting in the much-anticipated adaptation of Ian McEwan’s The Children Act for director Richard Eyre, currently shooting. So far, his only other screen credit is as a teenager in the ITV three-parter Him, broadcast last month.

At the age of 12, Nottinghamborn Sennia Nanua landed the central role of Melanie — a girl who may hold the key to humanity’s survival after the outbreak of a disease with zombie-like symptoms — in Colm McCarthy’s The Girl With All The Gifts. She was one of 500 girls to audition through The Television Workshop. Having only previously starred in short film Beverley, Nanua says she picked up plenty of tips from co-stars Gemma Arterton and Glenn Close.
When she was 10 years of age, Eleanor WorthingtonCox, who has been taking acting classes at the Formby School of Dancing and Performing Arts in Liverpool since she was five, shared the lead role in stage musical Matilda, going on to jointly win an Olivier award for best actress. Shortly after, WorthingtonCox starred as Young Princess Aurora in Maleficent alongside Angelina Jolie, and in 2015 was Baftanominated for her first lead TV role in The Enfield Haunting.
At the age of 11, Nottinghambased Molly Windsor, who has trained with the city’s Television Workshop and Actors Studio, earned plaudits for her lead role in Samantha Morton’s Bafta-winning The Unloved, in which she played abused child Lucy. Roles in Oranges And Sunshine and When The Lights Went Out followed, before a break until this year’s BBC drama Three Girls, in which she stars opposite Maxine Peake and Lesley Sharp.

Pinewood makes a splash Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios
Since opening 18 months ago, Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios has put the country on the international industry map, with a spectacular water filming facility and beautiful locations set to drive future growth

T
he Godfather shot here. So did the 2006 Miami Vice remake directed by Michael Mann. Earlier this year, Vin Diesel was on the island to film sequences for xXx: Return Of Xander Cage. And now Zorro is headed to the Caribbean nation. Some 106 films were shot in the Dominican Republic between 2011 and 2015. That compares with only 101 in the preceding 89 years. Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios (Pinewood DR), the only water filming facility of its size and scope in the Americas, will host the Jonas Cuaron-directed film Z, starring Gael Garcia Bernal as the iconic Latino swordsman in early 2017. “There’s no question we have contributed to that output,” says Fred Medina, COO of Lantica Media, majority owner of Pinewood Dominican Republic in partnership with Pinewood Group. Medina says the studio, together with the country’s five-year-old financial incentive programme, trained bilingual crews and the island’s geographic diversity, have helped drive film shoots to the Dominican Republic in previously unseen numbers. Pinewood DR alone has hosted eight film shoots in the past 18 months, as well as commercials and music videos. A popular TV series is in talks. The studio has the capacity to accommodate produc-

tions of all sizes, from low-budget $2m projects to high-scale features costing $100m or more. The impetus for building the 43-acre studio came from INICIA, an asset management firm and an investor in Lantica that also manages a key land bank in the Dominican Republic. INICIA approached Pinewood Studios Group, viewing the underdeveloped entertainment industry in the region as an opportunity. “It was about introducing a unique industry into the region, partnering with a world-class organisation and building something magnificent,” Medina says. Cutting-edge facilities The jewel in the crown of Pinewood DR Studios is the eight-acre water filming facility, which houses the world’s newest state-of-the-art horizon water tank, a 60,000 sq ft horizon installation with green-screen capabilities. The facility also includes a water tank for underwater filming as well as a fully equipped diving and marine department, tip tanks, wave machines, a water-tank tractor, camera rostrums, VFX rostrums, support boats, moveable metallic walkways and stairs, and underwater green and blue screens. Three soundstages, each with an interior tank, occupy 53,000 sq ft, and associated production support facilities — including workshops, offices and

dressing rooms — inhabit another 50,000 sq ft. Producers sometimes worry about language barriers when scouting international locations, but Pinewood DR works with bilingual crews and a certified English-speaking diving crew trained by Diving Services UK. The studio provides everything from logistics and budgeting to equipment and casting support, location services and travel services for visiting crews. International productions can tap into the island nation’s 25% transferable tax credit, as well as VAT and customs exemptions — all transactions Pinewood DR’s production services company can help to process. It offers administrative, legal, tax and accounting advice, as well as administration of incentives and monetisation on financial closing.
The Dominican Republic has other advantages for international productions, beyond its fiscal incentives and the Pinewood facilities. It is close to the US and has eight international airports offering direct flights to major North American and European cities. The country can be crossed by car in less than three hours. It also has a favourable exchange rate with the US dollar, a stable political and socio-economic environment and a surprising diversity of locations. “If we step outside of our studio, we have mountains, jungles, deserts, coastal areas, waterfalls, underground caverns and colonial towns as well,” Medina says. “Within a relatively compact area, the country offers a broad range of ecosystems and production locations.” Action stations There is another unique aspect of Pinewood DR: more than just a studio for hire, Lantica co-produces and co-finances projects such as Z, a co-production with Sobini Films sold internationally by Pantelion, which has also distributed Spanish-language productions filmed at the studio. “As we land more features and TV productions, we can adapt to their needs and begin to build out to spec,” Medina says of future plans. Expansion is likely, and is going to be “demand generated”, he says. There is space to incorporate secondary and tertiary features around the water tank, such as soundstages, workshops and a natural coastline backlot. “We’re about building the world’s most dynamic water production facility. When film-makers think of water filming, the natural answer will be the Dominican Republic,” Medina concludes.
