Tough market sees rays of light BY JEREMY KAY & ANDREAS WISEMAN

In an increasingly polarised independent space besieged by a talent exodus to TV and the might of digital platforms and studio acquisitions teams, the consensus was there was no single must-have title at AFM. So it was up to a handful of appealing projects and star appearances to inject life into the market. As Screen International revealed, Sacha Baron Cohen showed up at the Annapurna International offices to talk up his $20m-$30m Danish comedy remake Klown. Viola Davis trumpeted GFM Films’ The Personal History Of Rachel DuPree, Margot Robbie met Sierra/ Affinity buyers for I, Tonya, and Mark Wahlberg took part in a TWC-Dimension presentation with writer-director Damian Szifron for The Six Billion Dollar Man. COO David Glasser expects to begin presales in December on Szifron’s Wild Tales follow-up, and orchestrated a

packed session that included horror project Polaroid and Robert De Niro comedy War With Grandpa. Tom Hanks’ $50m Second World War submarine thriller Greyhound was a popular title for FilmNation, while Lionsgate International made a splash with Sicario follow-up Soldado, Saw: Legacy and Horse Soldiers, as did Mister Smith for Wish Upon. SND’s Mel Gibsonstarrer Every Other Weekend, FilmNation’s Wildlife, Studiocanal’s animations Early Man and Shaun The Sheep Movie 2 and Sierra/Affinity’s Villain were among those to tempt buyers while eOne stole a march on another hot title when it swooped yesterday on rights to HanWay’s Liam Neeson drama The Trainer (see story, right). Independent sales powerhouses such as these and others around the world have known for years the value in aligning themselves with a capital base and a production capability. Now, everybody who wants

to survive is keen to do the same as the migration of talent to TV and the voracious appetite and intimidating spending power of Netflix and increasingly Amazon Studios has turned the business on its head. The Exchange has closed a revolving line of credit with Pacific Mercantile Bank to further ramp up its financing and production activities and move towards higher prestige content. “The company is growing organically and that’s what makes this sustainable,” said CEO Brian O’Shea, who has enjoyed a strong response to third-party sales

title The Lady And The Panda, which is indicative of the type of product he wants to move towards. “Buyers are being much more selective and we all need to try harder to present the kinds of films that will work in the international marketplace,” said Mimi Steinbauer, president and CEO of Radiant Films International. Steinbauer’s buyers responded well to titles such as Ashes In The Snow with Bel Powley, The Changeover with Timothy Spall and thriller Misfortune from Lucky McKee. China remained high on the agenda with increased attendance from delegates and a strong presence at the AFM industry programming. “There is a continued growth of non-English language films and non-English-language sellers coming into the market,” said AFM managing director Jonathan Wolf. “This split was 70/30, ten years ago. Now it’s 60/40 and at some point will hit an equal balance.”

Entertainment One (eOne) has swooped on UK/Ireland and Australia rights to Liam Neeson drama The Trainer, which is being sold here by HanWay Films. The hot market project, set to shoot next year, will reteam Neeson with his Michael Collins director Neil Jordan. Additional casting is underway. The deal is one of the most high profile to take place so far at this year’s AFM. In The Trainer, Neeson will play a racehorse trainer in the west of Ireland who becomes beset by tragedy. When a teenage refugee comes into his life, the two bond over a horse. Script comes from David Donohue, James Villemaire and Todd Komarnicki (Sully). Producers are Komarnicki, Arthur Lappin, Robin Gurland and Gregory O’Connor. “Having eOne come on board the UK and Ireland, the film’s home territory, and also Australia is a ringing endorsement that The Trainer is being recognised as the perfect mix of a first-class film team and a powerful story with wide mainstream appeal,” said Gabrielle Stewart, managing director of HanWay Films.

Leone Film Group floats to top Raffaella Leone is riding high on a slate that includes La La Land and Hacksaw Ridge — with Bulgari, Steven Spielberg and stock-market backing to spice up the mix

Raffaella Leone

BY GABRIELE NIOLA

Italy’s historic film company the Leone Film Group — founded by late spaghetti western maestro Sergio Leone and now run by his heirs Andrea and Raffaella — has gone from strength to strength since floating on the Milan stock market at the end of 2013. Under the pair’s management, it has expanded into a high-end distribution and production player in Italy. The company has output deals with Lionsgate, DreamWorks and Summit Entertainment and several high-profile titles on its slate

this year including La La Land, The Girl On The Train and Hacksaw Ridge. It also has growing clout as a local producer through the success of Marco Belardi’s Lotus Production, acquired by the company in July 2104, with films such as Paolo Genovese’s hit comedy Perfect Strangers and Paolo Virzi’s Like Crazy. Internationally, the company has just joined Steven Spielberg’s upcoming feature The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara as a co-producer. The recent acquisition of 10% of the company by Maite Bulgari — wife of Paolo Bulgari, chairman of the Italian luxury goods brand — will help fund the company’s expansion into TV. Raffaella Leone sat down with Screen International to discuss her company’s future projects and strategy.

ies with Italian actors distributed worldwide, from China to Peru.

How can Italian productions become more relevant for the market?

La La Land

Where does Leone Film Group’s main focus lie? We want to become a factory covering everything from production to distribution to sales. Our aim is also to get our favourite film-makers to interact with each other. For example, Paolo Genovese is now writing a new movie with Gabriele Muccino. We want to foster these

sorts of relationships in which different cinematic visions come together to create new value.

Is that your mission? No, what I’d like to achieve in the future is that a success like Perfect Strangers isn’t bought for remake but rather for international distribution. I want to see Italian mov-

International players are looking for ideas beyond the American productions. The world is getting smaller and borders seem to matter less. I see curiosity towards Italian productions, and good for us we managed to take advantage of this immediately.

What does the Bulgari deal bring to the table? It will support our move into TV series. We’re about to start production of Colt, an old western idea of my father with Stefano Sollima as show-runner, and Beati Paoli, by Giuseppe Tornatore.

NETFLIX DEALS IN FOCUS

Divines intervention Camera d’Or winner Divines gets a worldwide release on Netflix in November. Could it be a game-changing move for independent auteur cinema? Melanie Goodfellow reports

F

rench director Houda Benyamina’s gritty drama Divines goes on worldwide release via streaming giant Netflix this month, just six months after it clinched the prestigious Camera d’Or for best first feature at Cannes. The timely portrait of a teenager desperate to rise above her disadvantaged reality in a tough outerParis neighbourhood was cited by a number of critics as one of the highlights of the festival following its premiere in Directors’ Fortnight. The win puts Benyamina in illustriThe White ous company — Jafar Panahi (The Salaam Bombay!), Balloon), Mira Nair (Salaam Jim Jarmusch (Stranger Than Paradise)) and Beasts Of The Southern Wild) Wild Benh Zeitlin (Beasts are all previous winners of the Camera d’Or. In an unprecedented move for a picture that had won one of the top prizes at the world’s biggest and most traditional film festival, however, the terms of the Netflix deal exclude a theatrical release anywhere except the production’s home territory of France. Divines is among a dozen or so high-profile independent features — many by firsttime directors — to be picked up by Netflix in the past 12 months. Recent international feature acquisitions include Lebanese Oscar submission Very Big Shot, the first Emirati thriller Rattle The Cage (Zinzana), Kleber Mendonca Filho’s Aquarius, Anurag Kashyap’s Raman Raghav 2.0 and Chanya Button’s Burn Burn Burn. US features backed by Netflix include David Michod’s War Machine and upcoming thriller Wheelman. Maisie Williams drama iBoy is the first UK film fully financed by the SVoD service, which will spend $6bn on content in 2017. This is part of a drive to improve the image of its cinema offering, which has always looked weak in comparison to its bouquet of Original and acquired TV dramas. Netflix acquisition executive Funa Maduka first scouted Divines at the second edition of Qumra, the annual talent development event of Qatar’s Doha Film Institute. “She saw a 20-minute rough cut and was enthusiastic immediately,” says the film’s producer Marc-Benoit Créancier. “TIFF’s Cameron Bailey loved it, too. On the other hand, the few Europeans who took the time to see it were lukewarm.” The company approached Divines’ sales agent Films Boutique in the early days of Cannes, offering a lucrative deal for SVoD rights. After the Camera d’Or win, it upped

www.screendaily.com

Divines

the offer to include all rights and the labelling of Divines as a prestigious Netflix Original. “They made an even bigger and better offer that we could not refuse,” says Créancier. “We decided to play the game and embrace this new adventure in the knowledge that Netflix was going to position it differently as an Original. “It made sense on a number of levels,” he continues. “They believed in the film early on and were the first at the table, with the best offer. Traditional theatrical deals would never have matched the sum that they were offering.” Mixed feelings Speaking to Screen International during October’s BFI London Film Festival, where the film had its first — and, perhaps, last — theatrical screening in the UK, Benyamina admits she initially had mixed feelings about the deal. “I didn’t understand its full implications but when the penny dropped, I’ll admit I was disappointed that the film was destined not to show in cinemas,” she says. But Benyamina has since revised this view following the film’s theatrical run in France, where it has drawn a respectable 400,000 admissions since its release on August 31 through distributor Diaphana Films.

‘Traditional theatrical deals would never have matched the sum that Netflix were offering’ Marc-Benoit Créancier, Divines producer

For Benyamina, that is not enough. She expresses frustration that Divines did not make it into out-of-town cinemas and was pulled quickly if it failed to draw spectators in the first few days. “If the film only ever reaches 400,000 people, I’ll be disappointed but I am someone who always wants more,” she explains. “If you haven’t got the punch of a blockbuster, it can be tough for a film like mine. I’ve got friends whose films have been pulled after a matter days. There’s no time to build word-of-mouth.” Benyamina hopes the Netflix release will help Divines connect with the younger audiences it missed during the theatrical run. Créancier says Netflix is also mulling a Golden Globes and Bafta push. Not all of Netflix’s feature acquisitions receive this special treatment. Off-the-record tales abound of producers and directors left pondering the fate of their film after a deal with the streaming giant. Viewing figures are never revealed and some titles slip onto the platform with little fanfare — and likely very little audience. Divines, meanwhile, goes global on November 18. It is among around 20 Netflix Original titles premiering on the platform in November. It remains to be seen whether Benyamina s and Créancier’s hopes are fulfilled. ■

AFM EVENT WORLD OF LOCATIONS BREAKFAST

Screen’s Jeremy Kay hosts (from left) Obed Emvula of Namibia Film Commission, Tony Armer of St Petersburg/ Clearwater Film Commission and Maria Antonia Vergara of Panama Film Commission at Shutters on the Beach on Friday

The World series An AFM audience at Screen International’s latest World of Locations breakfast talked incentives and filming opportunities with reps from emerging stars Panama, Namibia and St Petersburg/Clearwater, Florida

F

ilm commissioners from Panama, Namibia and St Petersburg/Clearwater in Florida told an audience of producers and festival programmers of their desire to boost their industries at Screen International’s World of Locations breakfast and panel here on Friday. “Our industry is growing and we have so many stories to tell,” said Maria Antonia Vergara of Panama Film Commission, which offers a 15% cashback incentive that could rise to 25% within a year once the measure is approved by lawmakers. Narcotics drama Escobar: Paradise Lost starring Benicio del Toro was the first film to apply for the incentive. The France-Belgium-Spain co-production invested $5m into the local economy and qualified for the incentive because it met the requirements of a $3m minimum spend. That threshold could change to make more productions eligible. This will be of use to local film-makers and meets the mandate of the commission, which was set up to attract foreign investment and support the local creative base. The commission allocates an annual $2.2m for local production through its Fondo Cine Award and supports International Film Festival Panama. With a

8 Screen International at AFM November 6, 2016

talent base on the rise, six local films were selected in this year’s line-up. Yet the territory has demonstrated its ability to host larger shoots. Quantum Of Solace filmed there, as did Contraband, Hands Of Stone and Dwayne Johnson reality show Hero. Coming up is a major Hollywood feature that Vergara was not at liberty to reveal. A young nation Obed Emvula of Namibia Film Commission told attendees the west African country hosted an 11-month shoot for Mad Max: Fury Road after the production left Australia due to heavy rains in the desert. It injected around $38.5m (N$525m) into the local economy. “We want to share with you not just the location but the story of who we are,” said Emvula. “We’re a young nation.” Namibia became a democracy in 1990 and representatives such as Emvula believe it can become one of the most compelling destinations on the planet. Like Panama, there is a strong emphasis on nurturing local talent; in fact, 60% of the commission’s budget goes to meet these aims. “We want to make sure they develop the skills and get exposure around the world.”

‘We take film very seriously. The involvement of local businesses is very important’ Obed Emvula, Namibia Film Commission

The country boasts natural beauty and a strong road infrastructure. The commission is working with the banking sector to better understand the content creation business. “We take film very seriously. Local business involvement is very important,” said Emvula. “We’re working on an incentives programme at the moment to increase the appetite for international producers to film here. We’re working on an additional 17% incentive that’s likely to pass next year.” Local resource While the film-making credentials of Florida need no explanation, St Petersburg/Clearwater film commissioner

Tony Armer has to keep his area competitive against high-profile locales such as Miami and Orlando. Although there is no statewide incentive, the county offers a 10% incentive and combines with the 10% that nearby Tampa offers for a 20% incentive on a shoot. “It’s a cash incentive and it can be done in a short time,” said Armer. “You can have it ready for post-production if you can get the deliverables together in time.” The county hosted feature productions such as Magic Mike, Spring Breakers and two Dolphin Tale films. Each film in the family franchise cost around $37m to produce; in both cases local spend reached $20m and the films qualified for a $5m incentive. A $2m local spend on Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children qualified for a $200,000 incentive. Armer said he expected the state-wide incentive, which applied to Dwayne Johnson TV show Ballers and Dolphin Tale, to be reinstated before long. “It will happen, but in the meantime we’re going to get aggressive with the things we’re pushing.” That means features, TV shows, web series or commercials as Armer works to raise further the s profile of the area. ■
