Innovation to Build On
Master Builders ACT partnered with the Canberra Innovation Network (Cbrin) to deliver a networking event where MBA Conference attendees heard from four inventors about their game-changing ideas. These four ideas all aim to provide sustainable change for businesses in the construction industry.

POWERHAUS ENGINEERING
Designers and builders want to build a smart home, designed for the future. The information from energy efficiency ratings can be clunky, conflicting, and doesn’t help people make big-picture decisions about their build. The Powerhaus design tuning tool helps people build smart, energy-efficient homes for the future, with interactive data deciding on build specifications, windows, orientation and energy use. We cut through the slow process on energy ratings, solar sizing and heating and cooling decisions to put clear answers in your hands.

Problem: Safety in construction is not improving
Builders spend a lot of time and money on safety. Yet recently, Safe Work Australia data shows that safety at work has not improved over the past seven years. A report by McKinsey found this was due to an overwhelmingly negative environment around safety. The report suggested rewarding safety, rather than punishing its absence.
Solution: Reward safe work
Rewarding safe work is now possible and very easy. Canberra-based startup Scratchie offers an app that allows supervisors to reward workers, on the spot, for safe work. Tested by Laing O’Rourke, John Holland, Richard Crookes and others, the results are overwhelmingly positive: a 26% improvement in safety attitudes amongst workers, supervisors save 1-2 hours per week, and clients (particularly large owners and government) are more likely to award tenders to builders that demonstrate safety initiatives. Scratchie even has a free option.
