The Parade of Homes is a nationally-recognized event that began in southeastern Wisconsin in the 1940’s. Each year, the Parade of Homes showcases one or more premier subdivisions featuring new homes that have not previously been available for touring by the public. The 2019 Parade will take place in three subdivisions: White Oak Conservancy (Town of Delafield), Twin Pine Farm (Town of Lisbon) and Aero Park (Menomonee Falls). Among the three subdivisions, twenty homes will display a wide array of residential building trends, including Jonathan Synovic the latest concepts in floor plans, energy efficient products and materials, trending fixtures Chair, 2019 MBA Parade of Homes and appliances, home automation, interior design and landscaping. President’s Message I am excited to present the official guide to the 2019 Metropolitan Builders Association Parade of Homes, presented once again by Nonn’s. I would like to give a special thank you to Nonn’s for their continued support of the MBA Parade of Homes over the past seven years. The MBA’s Parade of Homes is the longest running Parade in the entire United States, spanning more than seventy years! Each year, the MBA Parade builders offer some of the finest home designs, newest home trends, and cutting-edge features for you to enjoy as you tour the model homes. This year’s Parade showcases twenty amazing homes by seventeen of the MBA’s builder members in three subdivisions: White Oak Conservancy (Town of Delafield), Twin Pine Farm (Town of Lisbon) and Aero Park (Menomonee Falls). Copyright Infringement The Protection of Homes and Their Designs Make your home building experience a positive one by sticking with plans you know are legitimate.
The homes you tour during the 74th Annual Parade of Homes are a true testament to the vision of Parade builders. What starts out as a design concept develops into a fabulous architectural plan. From there, a majestic home takes shape. Decisions are made regarding every component that will go into the home. What kind of flooring should be used? What type of lighting? A Parade builder must address all the issues you will need to consider when it comes time to build your new home. The biggest difference is a Parade builder must plan on building his or her home to impress the varying personalities of thousands of visitors. Because there is so much work that goes into the design and construction of a home, there are also laws in place that protect each home’s unique design. Just as there has been copyright protection in place to safeguard the original works of authors of literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works, in 1990, copyright protection was extended to include architectural works. With respect to new home construction, the federal copyright laws protect the copying of all or a portion of a home design. Protection is found in two different areas: The protection of the design plans (including blueprints and floor plan layouts). The protection of the completed structure. This extends to its overall interior and exterior appearance.
This means that while you are welcome to tour the Parade homes, you need to remember that the plans builders have available for you, detailing the layout and the exterior of the home, are for educational purposes only. You may not copy those plans. If you bring plans gathered at the Parade of Homes to another builder and ask him or her to duplicate the same home for you, you would be in direct violation of the 1990 Copyright law. Many copyright infringement cases in southeastern Wisconsin have resulted in extensive litigation, and significant judgments. The consequences for plan stealing are very serious and can result in substantial financial penalties. Recent parties convicted of architectural copyright infringement have been required to pay anywhere from $15,000 to $125,000. In future cases, penalties may be higher or lower depending on the extent of copyright infringement. Consumers who are interested in building new homes should consider the following advice to avoid copyright infringement claims: 1) Never ask one builder to copy all or part of the design or finished appearance of another builder. 2) W hen interviewing builders and shopping for different home designs, ask each builder you interview whether he or she has a home design that incorporates the style or features you are looking for. Explain the style or features by giving examples; but keep in mind that copying is prohibited.
3) M ake sure that you are purchasing the rights to a legitimate plan by asking the builder to confirm that he or she has the right to build the plan or design that you have selected. If you see a specific feature, like a sunroom, in a home that you like, you could ask the builder you would like to work with if they have something similar in one of their home designs or if they could design something similar. The key to avoiding copyright infringement is to understand that copying any part of another builder’s plan is against the law. If you ask your builder to construct the same exact feature found in another builder’s home, it is a violation. Keep in mind that individual standard features or design elements that are functionally required may not be copyrighted (such as doors, windows and stairs). One question frequently encountered by area attorneys is how handwritten sketches are viewed with regard to the copyright law. Many homeowners believe that when they contribute their own sketch to a builder, detailing ideas for a floor plan or a specific design idea, that they have rights to the final design of the home. In reality, the copyright is owned by the person who puts the ideas into final form. When an owner’s sketch is incorporated into an architectural design it becomes part of the architectural design and becomes the property of the person who drew the plan. While the homeowner still has rights to his or her sketch, that is the only part of the plan he or she may take to another builder without having to worry about infringing on the copyright owned by another party. 2019 MBA Parade of Homes

Hillcrest is sharing with you the Elizabeth III with a “country estate twist” in Twin Pine Farm in Lisbon. Hillcrest has an extensive practice of building on country lots and subdivisions that allow outbuildings. We lay claim to the term “above-ground man cave”, and in this Parade model are showing a quaint detached garage for the sports car/brew pub/shop/garden shed. The term “craftsmanship” is a word used so often by builders today that it seems to have lost its meaning. However, when applying the term “craftsmanship” to Westridge Builders, it has a wealth of meaning that goes back four generations. Michael Jasin was a semi-professional woodworker who made a name for himself by hand-tooling propellers for World War I planes. His talent for detailed woodworking led him to hand-craft several instruments and furniture pieces. Eventually, he found home building to be his true calling. His son-in-law, Paul Tomich, acquired his talent for precision craftsmanship from his father-in-law, and later incorporated Life Homes in 1958. The 1950’s saw a trend in building with new subdivisions popping up which were designed specifically for raising families and Life Homes fit perfectly into that niche. By the late 1960’s the building baton was passed to Paul’s son, Craige Tomich, who began running Life Homes. In 1975, he incorporated his own company, Westridge Builders, continuing the tradition of helping homeowners build the American Dream. Today, Michael Jasin’s great grandson, Carl Tomich, heads Westridge Builders and incorporates his family’s legacies with three collections of homes; Platinum Homes, Life Homes and City Homes, along with developing numerous subdivisions in southeastern Wisconsin. His company has earned one of the finest reputations in the industry for building quality homes with superior craftsmanship.

The Wentworth The Wentworth’s Craftsman-inspired exterior combines brick and cement board siding, along with a muted palette of taupe and cream, to create a welcoming look. A large covered front porch with tapered columns increases curb appeal and the home’s living space. Carl Tomich
The term “craftsmanship” is a word used so often by builders today that it seems to have lost its meaning. However, when applying the term “craftsmanship” to Westridge Builders, it has a wealth of meaning that goes back four generations. Michael Jasin was a semi-professional woodworker who made a name for himself by hand-tooling propellers for World War I planes. His talent for detailed woodworking led him to hand-craft instruments and furniture pieces. Eventually, he found home building to be his true calling. His son-in-law, Paul Tomich, acquired his talent for precision craftsmanship from his father-in-law, and incorporated Life Homes in 1958. The 1950’s saw a trend in building with subdivisions popping up designed specifically for raising families. Life Homes fit perfectly into that niche. By the late 1960’s the building baton was passed to Paul’s son, Craige Tomich. In 1975, he incorporated his own company, Westridge Builders, continuing the tradition of helping homeowners build the American Dream. Today, Michael Jasin’s great grandson, Carl Tomich, heads Westridge Builders and incorporates his family’s legacies with three collections of homes; Platinum Homes, Life Homes and City Homes, along with developing numerous subdivisions in Southeastern Wisconsin. His company has earned one of the finest reputations in the industry for building quality homes with superior craftsmanship.
