ABOUT ME My name is Mandy. I am a passion-driven, music-loving, snap-happy graduate-to-be, currently based in Yorkshire. I am currently studying my final year in graphic design, and I am a multidisciplinary creative offering a versatile but focused skill set. I love all things design. Creating is my passion and I like to take inspiration from every-day life. I enjoy working with all things visual, from digital to print to photography. No matter how big or how small the project, I believe the utmost enthusiasm, dedication and creative thinking must be put into each piece of work, not only to please the client and the audience; but to also feel personally fulfilled with the result. I am committed to any task and believe great attention to detail as well as being efficient is key to being a designer. I am organised, analytical and diplomatic. I am always looking to improve my work and further my skills. I am passionate about undertaking social projects which raise awareness for causes. I am adaptable within design but my key strengths are branding and identity, editorial and photography. Work and life experience have given me relevant team skills, but I can also work unassisted. I am excited to graduate in 2014, and to find out what the next step of my journey will be. I want to work within a company where I can contribute whilst building upon my existing skills, and also where I can grow as a designer.

POP-UP GALLERY 2012 | branding Description: Branding and identity campaign to promote a Pop Up Gallery, an Artist Room project by York Museums Trust. An identity was created using a mixture of media including photography, typography and vector artwork. We were asked to use artist Bruce Nauman (main exhibitor) as inspiration so I used human form photography along with bright colours in my designs. I wanted the branding to have a contemporary, eye catching look so I created the logo using shapes and overlays. This carried through the rest of the design which included a leaflet, poster and web banner.

YELLOW ROOM THEATRE 2013 | branding Description: Project for Yellow Room Theatre, London. I was approached to create a logo for this theatre company. I experimented with numerous approaches, before deciding on the final logo variations with the client. I wanted to maintain a traditional and relevant approach. The logo represents an open book and distressed font to represent the tradition and history of theatre.

LAP THE WORLD 2013 | branding Description: I was approached to create a logo to represent Sam Greatex’s round the world trip using only man power, to raise money for Macmillen Cancer Research. I wanted to capture this amazing aim and let the logo speak for itself. I experimented using different symbols to represent the methods of travel for the trip, and after discussing the outcomes with Sam, decided on the approach using both the cyclist and rower in a black and white form.

CREATIVE DNA 2013 | branding Description: Branding and identity campaign for York College end of year show. I used a personal approach, asking each exhibitor to tell me an object of their choice, to represent their personality or something that is personally meaningful. I photographed each object and created a grid style poster. I wanted to raise intrigue and have a subtle component for each exhibitor. I also created bright graphics to maintain some boldness and colour. An interactive leaflet was created that folds out into a poster.

This particular design was part of a prestigious exhibition for the University of York. The graphics were designed to give a sense of harmony to the place, using rich colour to add variety. REVIEW
Literature EDITORIAL LAYOUTS 2013 | editorial Description: Editorial layout designs undertaken in 2013. Use of consistent layout and grid systems, typography, imagery and strong attention to detail.
BENETTON. Love, hate or indifferent?
B
enetton’s adverts are not simply about selling clothes; in fact they aren’t about clothes at all. They express sympathy for human suffering sending often disturbing messages about life, death and social issues. These tactics can sometimes provoke strong and often disturbed emotions from the public. I think highly of Benetton for doing this successfully and commendably over such a long period of time. Starting back in 1965 their approach of this design was risky and controversial. However, they did succeed in catching the media and publics attention to raise awareness to important social issues. These techniques sent them way beyond their goal of

promoting their clothing range; they turned into an ethical brand. I have strong views on how advertising is not only be used to sell products, but additionally to send out important messages. These qualities can lead brand associations and evidently, with Benetton, they do. Benetton’s aim is to use symbolic shock tactics to highlight serious social issues, highly maintaining their brand ethics and values. Their campaigns are thought provoking and very contentious emphasising the importance of peace and equality. It is clear that controversial adverts are active about raising awareness to important subject matters. This can give campaigns

URBAN TYPOGRAPHY 2012 | photography Description: An editorial and sequential design project featuring urban typography within Scarborough. Through my own photography, I wanted to show Scarborough not only as the tourist resort it is, but also the nostalgic, forgotten areas that have been left to overgrow and decay. I wanted the publication to provoke emotion and inspire people to look at more than the obvious. I used different mediums including photography, typography and vector graphics.

LGBT CALENDAR 2013 | typography Description: I created this calendar as I am passionate about social projects that could help to inspire change. Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender rights are a cause that is personal to me, and I wanted to feel like I was doing something to provoke thought on public attitude. I wanted to raise awareness of LGBT rights and highlight how much is still to be done around the world until social and legal equality is reached. I based the design on strong typography as I thought it was direct and informative. Each page includes certain facts such as which countries criminalise homosexuality, headlines from around the world and a historical timeline. I followed a theme of rainbow colours to be in keeping with Pride. I wanted to tap into truth, challenge opinions, but most importantly, inspire change.
