Greetings Mustang Fans, Making a difference. Something we all want to accomplish in our lives. When one gives to the Mustang Booster Club, they are making a difference in the education and future lives of over 300 student athletes. Additionally, they are making a difference in the future success of the Athletics Department and its 11 men’s and women’s sports teams and all that it provides to our university and community. There are many benefits in becoming a Mustang Booster Club member, which include tickets, parking, hospitality, Mustang apparel and a variety of unique, up-close experiences with our athletic program. Looking at schools was a very stressful process for me. I visited a lot of schools and spoke to a lot of coaches, but I hadn’t heard of SMSU until Defensive Coordinator, Tim Steinbach, visited my school and came to talk to me. I still didn’t know where I wanted to go or what I wanted to do when Coach Steinbach came to tell me about Marshall and SMSU. I remember sitting there and thinking about all the college information packets I had received and not being all that interested in SMSU at first. I didn’t even know where Marshall was, but I went on a visit because I thought I should give every school a chance. As soon as I visited SMSU I felt very at home, which was weird because I grew up in two big cities (Washington, DC and Minneapolis, MN) and Marshall was the complete opposite. But spending time with some of the team and talking to the coaches made me feel more welcome than I had at the other schools. I visited Mankato and Duluth and all they talked about was football. At SMSU I felt like I was a part of a family, like my teammates were my brothers and the whole team was a brotherhood. I know I made the right choice and will never regret my decision to come to SMSU. Warren Matthews Jr.

SMSU CIVIC ENGAGEMENT EVENTS
Ag Bowl
Ag Bowl is a community event that celebrates agriculture in southwestern Minnesota. Ag Bowl is part of a home Mustang football game and brings together the SMSU campus with the Marshall community and beyond. Participants are treated to a youth football clinic, inflatable games, pony rides, mechanical bull, petting zoo, carriage rides, live band, barbeque bonanza, and the opportunity to win great raffle prizes, prior to kickoff of SMSU Football.
WBCA Pink Zone
The WBCA Pink Zone is an NCAA sponsored event that raises awareness and funds for breast cancer treatment and research. Each February at a home women’s and men’s basketball double header, the R/A Facility is decorated pink to show support. The teams and cheerleaders wear special pink warm-ups and uniforms to show support for the cause. The women’s basketball team also sells their warm-up shirts to students and fans and donates all the proceeds to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. At halftime student-athletes and coaches gather on the court to donate at least 10 inches of hair to the Locks of Love program.
MUSTANG BOOSTER CLUB CIVIC ENGAGEMENT EVENTS Mustang Mail
Mustang Mail is a pen pal program created and supported by the Mustang Booster Club. All SMSU student-athletes are paired up with students from Marshall Elementary Schools. Students write and receive letters talking about the importance of school, and what it means to be a Mustang. During the spring semester we host “Mustang Mail Day” at each school and all students get the chance to meet their student-athlete pal.
Smokefest
Smokefest is an officially sanctioned Kansas City Barbeque Society barbeque contest held on SMSU’s campus in conjunction with SMSU athletics. Each year nearly 40 barbeque teams descend on Marshall, MN to test their barbeque skills in 4 categories: ribs, chicken, pork and brisket. Smokefest includes the Mustang Trail Street Dance, held outside the Regional Event Center, with contest judging beginning on Saturday at noon.
Mustang Shootout
The Mustang Shootout is a clay shooting competition held annually at Shooter’s Sporting Clays in Marshall, MN. Each year nearly one hundred participants form teams to compete for the best team and individual scores. The Mustang Booster Club helps sponsor the event with proceeds going towards scholarships for student-athletes.
Mustang Stampede
SMSU Golf Classic
The Mustang Stampede is a 5k Walk/Run through SMSU’s campus that brings together teams, parents, fans, and alumni in support of SMSU’s women’s athletics teams. Participants can join as individuals or by forming fundraising teams and compete for the most team members or most dollars raised. Prizes are awarded for fastest times, as well as participation numbers and dollars raised.
The Golf Classic is SMSU’s longest running fundraiser, celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2010. The event is put on by the Mustang Booster Club and hosted at the Marshall Golf Club and the Tyler Golf Club. Approximately fifty 5-person teams compete in the tournament which includes a social event as well as live and silent auctions.
Lakeview Program
Gold Rush Raffle
Our Lakeview Program connects SMSU student-athletes with students from the Lakeview school district in Cottonwood, MN. Student-athletes visit every classroom at the Lakeview School to read to the younger grades and have discussions with the older students about what it means to be a Mustang and what they have learned as a college student and student-athlete. All Lakeview students receive tickets to a home SMSU game where they can see the Mustangs in action.
The Gold Rush Raffle is SMSU Athletics’ and the Mustang Booster Club’s largest annual fundraiser. The Raffle is the event to be at on SMSU’s campus. A limited number of tickets are sold for the reverse raffle. Live and silent auctions are also included in the event, along with black jack games and a variety of great prizes. The grand prize of $5000 is awarded to the raffle ticket holder whose name is the last to be drawn throughout the night.
