Inside this issue you will find detailed business profiles of some of the first class Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs) certified by our council.

Brian Britton Chairman

It is with great pleasure that we acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of the MAMSDC and the goals that we have set for our organization in the future. Since the establishment of our council over 25 years ago, we have worked to connect and advocate for the mutually beneficial partnerships between our corporate members and our MBEs. MAMSDC has strived to be the premier organization, in the Greater Kansas City area and the state of Kansas to create opportunities for our corporate members and MBEs to build relationships with the hopes of working together. This has been our focal point for the mutual economic advancement and growth of the communities we collectively serve. MAMSDC is a privately funded, 501(c)3 corporate services organization and is an affiliate of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC). We are one of the few not for profit organizations that receive no federal or state support and survive entirely on the support of our corporate members and certified MBEs. Our members include major corporations and public entities in industry, finance, professional services, construction, consumer products and health care organizations that are tapping into the emerging global marketplace.

Our corporate members look to MAMSDC for minority owned and operated companies that can meet the needs of their demanding supply chain. Our corporate members understand the true benefit of utilizing MAMSDC certified MBEs as an opportunity to deliver innovative, quality products, along with world-class customer service. Corporations partner with MAMSDC with the understanding that minority supplier diversity programs are not just a competitive advantage, but a strategic imperative. As this issue indicates, MAMSDC is proud of the hard work and achievements of our certified MBEs, as well as the dedication to supplier diversity exhibited by our corporate members. MAMSDC and the minority business community have come a long way since the organization was founded. The journey is not yet complete, and we look forward to continued success and growth moving forward.

Minority Supplier Development Council Developing and Growing Opportunities for MBEs For almost three decades, the MidAmerica Minority Supplier Development Council (MAMSDC) has enhanced the growth and development of minority owned business enterprises (MBEs) through participation in private and public sector procurement programs. As one of 37 regional councils of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), MAMSDC represents businesses across Kansas and Western Missouri. The official mission of MAMSDC is to “Increase business development opportunities between majority and minority businesses and to strengthen our community.” Foremost, the council aims to facilitate greater corporate purchasing volume with MBE suppliers through a robust and involved network. MAMSDC continually strives to achieve excellence and has a history full of innovation, dedication and hard work.

History In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s,

Growth over the

Years

1986:

minorities across the Kansas City metropolitan area were becoming increasingly frustrated with the state of affairs in the city, especially with the lack of opportunities available to them in the world of business. In Kansas City, 29% of the 1.4 million residents at the time were minorities, yet very few had access to meaningful business opportunities. A group of Kansas City business leaders, including members of the Civic Council and Chamber of Commerce, banded together to create an organization in order to change

the status quo and create a more equitable business environment in the city. A purchasing council for minorityowned businesses was one of many ideas that emerged. That organization was first known as the Kansas City Minority Supplier Development Council (KCMSDC) and was officially established in 1983. KCMSDC founders concluded that the Board of Directors should exclusively consist of corporate CEOs. Top business executives from Hallmark Cards, KCP&L, Tension Envelope, JE Dunn Construction,

Helzberg Diamonds, Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, Alpha Plastics, United-Telecom and other key companies were recruited to become part of the first KCMSDC Board of Directors. Utilizing these key decision makers ensured that the new purchasing patterns and policies would be driven through companies from the topdown as well as hold purchasing directors accountable for results. CEOs worked with KCMSDC’s highly trained staff to learn how to conduct business with minority suppliers and make calls to area businesses asking them to use minority firms. CEO board members helped close the loop and secured deals with minority suppliers. As a result of the CEOs’ efforts, more doors were opened, more business was conducted, and a database was developed pairing those from the corporate community willing to engage in business exchange with minority suppliers. During KCMSDC’s first 13 years, it held the unique distinction of being the only council in the United States with a Board of Directors composed of CEOs. Serving on the Board required more than the traditional governance and oversight associated with a nonprofit organization, but also lots of work creating initiatives and making deals happen. Programs launched by the organization in its early years included: The annual awards luncheon, monthly spotlight luncheons, Adopt-a-Vendor, Video Vendor, dues investment, joint venture promotion, business counseling, business investment

expo, certification site visits and referrals. In addition to the CEOs, the original KCMSDC Board adopted the “one member” concept established by NMSDC, in which a single member of the minority business community serves on the Board. To ensure the single minority business member accurately reflected the needs and wants of the larger MBE community, the Minority Input Committee was formed. Likewise, the Purchasing Advisory Committee was created to represent the views of over 750 local purchasers who had agreed to do more business with minority firms and was the first of its kind. These committees conducted broad research on how to best create a new organization and included best practices on identifying existing minority suppliers, detecting the best qualified suppliers, finding corporations willing to participate in the campaign, establishing a certification process and determining basic organizational functions and programs. Together, the committees and board members helped KCMSDC achieve a great deal of success. In just 6 months, 80 minority members and 41 corporate members helped 19 minority firms obtain more than $1.2 million. In 1995, KCMSDC changed its name to the Minority Supplier Council (MSC) and held their first annual business expo later that year. MAMSDC first became an affiliate of the NMSDC in 1990 and became a 501(c)3 organization under the umbrella of

NMSDC in 1998.

Today Almost 30 years later, MAMSDC remains a business community that continues to grow stronger through increased diversity. Six staff members ensure that the needs of members are met and that the mission of the organization is properly executed. The council is funded through corporate dues, MBE certification, program and event fees, sponsorships and grants.

Beyond Kansas City Though initially focused solely on the Kansas City metropolitan area, geographic responsibility for the MAMSDC now includes Western Missouri and the entire state of Kansas. In 2006, MAMSDC opened a second office in Wichita to better serve minority businesses throughout the state of Kansas. Vice President Donna Wright serves as the director of the Wichita satellite office and brings a wealth of experience across the corporate and small business spectrum to this position. Ms. Wright has extensive experience as a senior purchasing agent and assisting with supplier diversity initiatives from the Boeing Company’s Wichita operations. She is also a former local business owner, consultant, and community business supporter. Her experience, paired with the strategic organizational expansion to Wichita, gives the satellite office a valuable local resource for corporate sourcing opportunities. In just a few years, the Wichita office has been able to bring minority business participation to the forefront

2000: 203 minority business owners and 185 corporations are certified with the council.

2009: 240 minority firms and 121 mainstream firms are certified through the council.

The number of corporate supporters and certified MBEs has rapidly increased since the office opened. What MAMSDC Offers MBEs Certification, development and access to opportunities are the three main services MAMSDC offers MBEs. Connecting certified MBEs in a wide range of service areas with corporate buyers facilitates MBE growth and expansion and is the primary focus of MAMSDC. This is accomplished not just through working with and identifying MBEs, but also by directly informing corporate buyers about the products and services available through MAMSDC’s certified MBEs. The business Opportunity Fair and networking sessions, also helps MBEs to build meaningful relationships with government agencies, private corporations and other minority suppliers. Additional resources to help MBEs grow and develop are available through MAMSDC. Financial and capital assistance is available to certified MBEs through the Business Consortium Fund and lending institutions. MAMSDC also encourages larger companies to invest in smaller MBEs. Continuing education, whether through local sessions and workshops, or national programs like the Kellogg Advanced Management Education Program and the Tuck Executive Program, provides certified member MBEs with the chance to increase their capacity and competitiveness.

What MAMSDC Offers Corporations Corporations are an essential component to the success of MAMSDC. All corporate members of MAMSDC are granted access to the powerful NMSDC national network, which consists of committed corporate peers, top flight MBEs and high profile publicity within diverse markets. By working directly with its corporate partners, MAMSDC helps corporations fulfill their procurement needs with the best possible match. MAMSDC provides technical assistance and support to increase and enhance its services to both corporate and MBE members. MAMSDC identifies, adopts and promotes best practices that encourage the purchase of goods and services from area MBEs. Member corporations without an existing minority purchasing program can turn to MAMSDC for advice and guidance. Asya Evans & Caroline Knecht

THE NMSDC IN 2012:

CERTIFY, DEVELOP, CONNECT & ADVOCATE For the past 40 years, the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) has encouraged the formation of mutually beneficial relationships between minority suppliers and the public and private sectors. NMSDC expands business opportunities for minority-owned companies of all sizes and helps build a stronger, more equitable society by supporting and promoting minority business enterprise (MBE) development. Since it was chartered in 1972, the private nonprofit has grown to include a national office in New York and 37 regional councils across the country.

J

oset B. Wright is an attorney and former procurement executive who currently serves as the President of the NMSDC, a position she has held since 2010. By her account, the NMSDC has a bright future with lots to offer both MBEs and corporate members alike following the successful completion of a five-year strategic plan in 2011. “We will spend 2012 working with six committees to develop an implementation plan, which will shape the future direction of NMSDC as we focus on four core competencies: certify, develop, connect and advocate,” says Ms. Wright. Joining the ranks of over 16,000 certified minority-owned businesses through NMSDC is a smart decision for entrepreneurs looking to expand. “For MBEs, an NMSDC certification opens the door to allow them to compete for corporate contracts,” says Ms. Wright. But it’s not just about opportunities; NMSDC certification is also focused on business development and enhancement. Providing top-notch programs for education and development is another priority for NMSDC. “We added a Director of Learning Programs position last year, so we can develop learning programs on various platforms for our MBEs and corporate members,” notes Ms. Wright. “We are working with our MBEs through programs like our Centers of Excellence and the Advanced Management

New tools are available to help MBEs ensure that their companies are in the best shape possible, such as the NMSDC Biz Fit Challenge tool, which was launched last year. “It is a free, online

Raising the Bar: Educational Programs & Business Development NMSDC helps established minority-owned businesses get the business development tools they need to succeed with their Kellogg Executive Business & Biz-Fit Program.   Continuing education is a vital component of business development and growth. The National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) strives to do more for minority business owners and help them take their companies to the next level through intense professional education programs from one of the most distinguished business schools in the country. NMSDC has worked with Northwestern University to create an intensive educational program focused on the unique challenges faced by minority businesses. Over the years, this program has encouraged thousands of MBEs to get on the fast track for growth and success, and continue to adapt and evolve with the ever-changing world of business.   Over fifteen years ago NMSDC teamed with the prestigious J.L. Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University to create a unique program for minority entrepreneurs. Nationally-known consultant and Kellogg School faculty member James H. Lowry originally developed the Advanced Management Education Program (AMEP) and continues his work today. Since its inception, the program has helped nearly 500 Asian, Black, Hispanic, and Native American CEOs turn new ideas into bigger business opportunities.   AMEP combines NMSDC’s knowledge of MBEs with Kellogg’s well-known interactive, team-based learning process to create a truly unique program. Program faculty are themselves working executives and professionals and provide real-world and up-to-the-minute information that can be applied to businesses immediately. Whether through group study, guest speakers, presentations, or case studies,

the hands-on program is always aligned with the participating MBE’s educational needs and current business climate.   AMEP is specifically designed to provide NMSDC certified businesses the tools and skills needed to achieve and sustain accelerated growth. This program can help any MBE adapt to the fast-changing business world and explore opportunities. Over the four-day program growth-oriented minority business owners learn necessary technical, operational, and financial skills necessary to be successful in the changing economy.   The program curriculum evolves each year to best meet the needs of the latest participants. Topics from the 2011 AMEP session include: access to Public and Private Markets, Change-Driven Threats and Opportunities, Changing Corporate Expectations, Core Competencies of High-Growth MBEs, Aspirations-based Strategic Planning, and Capital Budgeting. Regardless of the participant, the curriculum always incorporates NMSDC’s 40 years of knowledge about MBEs along with information conducted with corporate buyers.   Access to AMEP is limited; each annual session can only accept up to 40 attendees. To participate the MBE company must be at least three years old, meet sales requirements, and be recommended by either an NMSDC corporate member, local member or regional council. Applications are reviewed by an admission committee to ensure a diverse group of industries, geographical areas and ethnic backgrounds are represented. The next NMSDC's custom executive program will be held at the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, on June 3-7, 2012.

over. The MBEP Alumni network at Tuck boasts a membership of over 4400 minority business leaders. These alumni organizations serve as a strong support network for minority business executives and advocacy groups for minority business education. In addition, these organizations raise scholarship funds to help minority executives attend Tuck's executive education programs.   MAMSDC also has a local educational program offered by Rockhurst University. The Rockhurst scholarship program allows MAMSDC certified MBEs to take up to 12 credit hours per semester, including courses within the Helzberg School of Management. Courses are offered weekday evenings and occasional weekends to accommodate the busy work schedules of the MBE owners, or employees. These courses are regular college courses and can lead to a degree if the student so desires.   Rockhurst also offers MAMSDC certified MBEs an Executive MBE Program that targets entrepreneurs who know their industries well, but face challenges growing their business. MBEs that participate in the Executive MBE Program gain access to a team of Rockhurst Students in the Graduate Program who will access their company and work closely with the MBE to help the business owner make better decisions to grow their company to scale. In order to become a candidate for this program, the certified MBE must have a profitable business operation over the last two calendar years, annual revenues that exceed $500,000, and a company that is in a growth market. With this kind of specialized help, they could be on their way to growth and profitability.   Together, NMSDC and MAMSDC offer educational and business development programs in order to help turn new ideas into bigger business opportunities for MBEs across the country. Interested MBEs can contact their local NMSDC chapters for additional information, program requirements, referrals, and in some cases, program scholarships.

INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP/INNOVATION

DuraComm embarked on a strategic business initiative to make its new facility more energy efficient. One major project involved the design and installation of a 24.80 KW Photovoltaic system, which is designed to produce more than 34,000 KWH of energy per year and offset the building’s lighting load of 31,500 KWH. The building is in the process of being retrofitted with DuraComm LED lighting equipment. The entire building’s energy usage is monitored by a wireless smart metering system, distributed by DuraComm. The project’s financial benefits analysis includes a projected 25 year utility savings of $193,883, Return On Investment (ROI) of 4.8 years and and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 14.3%. The KCP&L Solar Rebate of $2.00 a watt and Federal Investment Tax Credit of 30%, as well as MACRS Depreciation Schedule with 100% bonus depreciation contributed to developing the business justification to invest in solar.

HISTORY

ARZELIA Gates - COMMUNITY RELATIONS

GATES B-B-Q

“Hi, May I Help You?” About Us

Gates Bar-B-Q is a Kansas City original. Our family restaurant established in 1946, has grown from a single store front at 19th & Vine to a family of six up-to-date restaurants throughout the Kansas City Metropolitan area; all struttin’ the Gates unique red roof design and man in full tuxedo top hat, depicting our style. Over 60 years of excellence, hard work and our family recipe has perpetuated the growth of our sauce line to a family of sauces, all with the distinct flavor found only in Gates products. All our restaurants, sauce products and seasonings serve as a conduit between us and our customers’ satisfaction. The connection of good food, fast, personalized service and an immediate greeting of “Hi, May I Help You?” All act as our trademarks. Gates will continue in the family tradition and pride ourselves in producing the best Bar-B-Q products possible.

The major reason for the success of Gates has been the barbecue sauce, manufactured and used by the barbecue restaurants. From the inception of the business in 1946, there was a constant demand for the sauce, and as the business grew and expanded that demand became greater. Attempts to meet the barbecue sauce demands initially were met by the manufacturing of the barbecue sauce, but it eventually became apparent that it was impossible to keep pace with the demand by primitive methods. Therefore, automation of the barbecue sauce manufacturing began to appear in the warehouse in the 1970’s and barbecue sauce manufacturing was completely automated by the mid ‘70s. As the demand for the sauce continued to grow and the ability to respond to that demand through automation was assured, a decision was made in 1975 to introduce Gates sauce to retail grocery stores. Sales calls were made to convince the buyers for the chain stores and the wholesalers who supply the independently owned stores to carry the barbecue sauce in their warehouses. Some favorably responded immediately, however, others displayed some reluctance to take a new item which they felt might yield questionable investment returns. Persistence and strong consumer appeal prevailed and all major supermarkets in the Kansas City metro area soon stocked Gates sauce on their shelves. Each year the barbeque sauce has been a strong competitor and enjoys a significant share of the market among the top competition in barbecue sauces. Gates is receiving national recognition due in large part to the strategic location of Kansas City. Being the hub of the nation, Kansas City attracts various groups of people from throughout the country for a variety of reasons, including national political conventions, public officials conventions, business, industry, fraternal and professional conventions,

as well as the American Royal, to name a few. Additionally, it is host to a number of college and professional sporting events. All these activities have brought many of these people into Gates’ restaurants, thereby enhancing the Gates national image, and more importantly, a continually rising demand for Gates sauce on a national basis. If they cannot have Gates Bar-B-Q in their own metropolitan areas, people will tout for the sauce being made available to them in their market areas. This national barbecue sauce demand has culminated in a decision being made in 1982 by Ollie Gates to commence a methodical and intense national distribution effort in 1983. Plans are currently underway to concentrate on a few major markets in reasonably close proximity to the Kansas City, market for two primary reasons. First, the closer those markets are to Kansas City the greater familiarity with Gates products. Second, having limited knowledge of national marketing, it seems imperative to be in close enough proximity to those experimental markets to react quickly as circumstances dictate during Gates’ initial exposure in those markets. This national demand for the barbecue sauce has brought forth a number of individuals and retailers, who have sought out Gates to arrange for distribution on a very limited basis in their markets, which include a few of the major markets across the country. Adversely affecting their ability to compete in the market place is the fact that they put in very small quantities, thereby considerably increasing an already exacerbating transportation cost.

Moreover, economic feasibility impinges against much marketing assistance from the manufacturer, whose assistance dollars are limited unless or until distribution efforts can be concentrated in a given market area. Eventually, assistance to them will be forthcoming as the marketing efforts and resources of Gates sauce begins fanning out from Kansas City in a concentrated manner, market-bymarket, with the ultimate goal of reaching every major and many lesser markets across the country within the next few years. Gates will continue in the family tradition and pride ourselves in producing the best possible products.

MAMSDC

CERTIFICATION LEADS TO SUCCESS Getting certified through MAMSDC is a worthwhile experience that can open a whole new world of business, as it has for Unlimited Building Maintenance (UBM).

Minority business certification through MAMSDC offers MBEs a multitude of advantages that can significantly improve the strength and development of the business. Certification directly leads to MBE growth and success through exposure to 3,600 leading national, regional and local companies, referrals to member corporations, opportunities to network with corporate members, access to corporate buyers, listing on the MAMSDC and NMSDC computer database (MBISYS), and second tier as well as MBE-to-MBE business opportunities. More than 17,000 certified MBEs across the NMSDC network experience enhanced relationships with corporate members, as well as additional benefits from participation in education programs, workshops, mentoring programs, financial programs and other business development opportunities. Asya Evans, a Certification Specialist at MAMSDC, explains that there are

many benefits to certification; however, the connections MBEs can make through networking are perhaps the most valuable. “MBEs are beginning to understand that people do business with people they know. It makes a huge difference when a buyer sees a bid come across their desk and they can relate to the person behind the bid. Otherwise, you’re just another bid.” Over the past three years, Unlimited Building Maintenance (UBM) of Lenexa, Kansas, has discovered the benefit of their MAMSDC certification. Mo Bashar, Business Development Director, explains that these days, companies are not just looking for a service to vacuum and empty trash cans. They’re looking for a company that can do “green cleaning” to keep their tenants or employees healthy and happy. That’s where UBM has an advantage. And MAMSDC certification and networking opportunities have

helped UBM gain access to firms looking for these specific services. When Mr. Bashar calls on a prospect, he can proudly say that as an MAMSDC-certified business, UBM is a cut above its competitors. UBM takes pride in its service, quality, security, expertise, and efficiency; but getting certified by MAMSDC helped take UBM, already a solid and wellrespected business, to the next level. Mrs. Evans noticed significant progression at UBM following their certification. “UBM has changed since becoming certified through MAMSDC by utilizing our association with the corporate community as an invitation to build relationships and ultimately gain contracts,” notes Mrs. Evans. Nicholas Stewart, the other Certification Specialist at MAMSDC, also witnessed changes at UBM

following their certification through MAMSDC. “Mo Bashar has laid out an incredible template on how to use the council to grow your business. With an upbeat attitude and persistence in networking, UBM has truly gained an advantage over the competition. Our council is always proud to recommend Unlimited Building Maintenance as a top-notch firm for hire," says Mr. Stewart. As UBM knows, the key to success involves more than just getting certified. It also requires actively utilizing the council and its resources. “UBM has taken advantage of our programs and applied the information they have learned to their business. This has put them in a unique position to compete. Their company is more viable and visible to our corporate members,” says Mrs. Evans. Mr. Stewart takes great pride in witnessing the success of newly certified MBEs firsthand. "One of the most exciting aspects of my job is when a newly certified company finds value out of the council. Watching a company make the corporate contacts, network relentlessly, and sit in front of your desk with a recertification application and a success story makes this job meaningful. Most companies give up after time periods with no success and I realize it is truly the diligent entrepreneur that perseveres," says Mr. Stewart.

MBEConnect Profiles | MAMSDC SPECIAL EDITION

Some MBEs are initially intimidated by the certification process, but that shouldn’t be a deterrent. Certification through MAMSDC is a simple process and well worth the time and money. Before the process begins, potential applicants should ensure that they meet all of the criteria for certification. Applicants must be a for-profit enterprise, physically located in the United States or its territories, at least 51% owned by an ethnic minority (African-American, Hispanic-American,

“They will soon find out how much easier life is when they have an advocate working on their behalf to assist in maneuvering through large organizations. We have the relationships to get the ball rolling; all the MBE has to do is put the ball in the goal.” — Asya Evans Native American, Asian and Pacific Islander American), and the ethnic minority owner must be active in the management and daily business operations of the enterprise. The first step in the certification process is an online application which can be completed gradually. Then, all required documentation must be sent to the council office by postal mail. MAMSDC conducts a site visit with the owner(s) of the company to confirm

information received within the application. Following the site visit, the application is recommended for approval by the Certification Committee, and the board of directors. Once certified, MBEs can immediately reap the rewards. “They will soon find out how much easier life is when they have an advocate working on their behalf to assist in maneuvering through large organizations. We have the relationships to get the ball rolling; all the MBE has to do is put the ball in the goal.” Mrs. Evans also has some advice for MBEs on the fence about whether or not they should get certified through MAMSDC: “I would recommend they evaluate who their target customers are and how they can serve them. They should then attend some of our programs and events to evaluate how our organization works.” Likewise, Mr. Stewart acknowledges that MBE certification is not for everybody. “It is not a one-size-fits-all solution. If your business is ramping up and looking for corporate contacts and contracts, our organization will be worthwhile. I would ask the owner to look into his sales strategy and make sure he has key elements of business that are needed to leap into the corporate supply chain. I challenge the business owner to think deeply on whether a corporate contract will break his business; or push their company to the next level,” says Mr. Stewart.

The Harvard Business Review reported sick employees cost American businesses over $150 billion a year in lost productivity. One sick employee can cost your company up to $500 per illness.

Mo Bashar - BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR Unlimited Building Maintenance

Cleaning With Your Health In Mind About Us

Unlimited Building Maintenance, LLC (UBM) is a privately held corporation assisting building managers throughout the Greater Kansas City area. With decades of experience in the cleaning and maintenance industry, we have the experience, knowledge, and service focus it takes to be a maintenance management consulting company. We’ll work with you to create a highly effective, economical building maintenance program. And we’ll manage the whole program for you, so you’re free to do your real job.

Companies that use old-fashioned vacuums and wet mops leave lots of dirt and germs on your floors. But UBM uses Green Seal® Certified Chemistry and EPA registered products and techniques to “clean the unseen”—bacteria that can cause illness. After cleaning, we measure the area’s bacteria level, to be sure the area is sparkling clean and healthy. Empty space means lost profit. Keep your spaces occupied with UBM’s Cleaning for Health program. When UBM keeps your building clean, fresh and sanitary, tenants will be healthier and happier. Kansas City clients who choose UBM’s Cleaning for Health program can reduce absenteeism due to illness by up to 33%. That’s how Cleaning for Health can help building managers with higher tenant retention, fewer complaints, and higher lease asking prices. UBM’s Cleaning for Health program can help you: Retain tenants Reduce tenant complaints Improve retail sales in your building Command higher lease asking prices Keep more profit

UBM’s green cleaning programs promote health and safety while having a minimal impact on the environment.

Cross-contamination spreads germs that cause illness. Stop the cycle of cross-contamination. Flu viruses can live on surfaces for up to 72 hours. During that time, a lot of people can pick up disease germs from touching those surfaces. But UBM’s exclusive “Touch Point” cleaning regimen kills germs, so they don’t spread. Our High-Flow Fluid Extraction System removes biofilms and infectious microorganisms that conventional cleaning can not.

Keep employees healthier and more productive. UBM’s Cleaning for Health program can help you: Cut absenteeism by up to 33%. Improve productivity by reducing sick days. Reduce employee health insurance claims and co-pays.

To reduce the chance of bacteria migrating throughout your building, UBM recommends that your entry mat be at least 20 feet long, and that it be cleaned daily, not just weekly. We also recommend hand sanitizer stations near your entrances to reduce germs coming in from outside.

UBM’s Core Operating Principles

the GREEN Clean institute

Taking the lead in any industry is not a simple task, but Unlimited Building Maintenance enjoys being a positive force in the janitorial business. In fact, Unlimited Building Maintenance of Kansas City is one of the newest Green Clean Institute Firm certifications. While many companies choose only to post a Green promise or logo on their website, UBM demonstrated its commitment to the industry by gaining Green Clean Institute certification. In less than two weeks, the UBM team completed their training and were on to the 180 Degree Assessment that would allow Unlimited Building Maintenance to implement the Green program over the next months and years. Going Green is not a one-time decision or a short-term project. It takes a while to get the training done, ideas in place, and gradually move the company into a serious Green operation. It involves replacing the products on the shelves, training workers on the products, and replacing equipment. Standard vacuums cycle out as new HEPA vacuums are brought in. Even items like trash bags, doormats, and cleaning cloths are part of the process. The workers at Unlimited Building Maintenance can proudly say that they EARNED their Green Janitorial certification from the highly recognized Green Clean Institute.

Construction With $8 billion in annual construction volume, Turner Construction is a firm that thinks globally and builds locally. Part of Turner Construction’s success is its serious dedication to including minority-and women-owned business enterprises (M/WBEs) in their projects. Turner Construction’s objectives are to increase visibility, improve economic viability, and expand opportunities for M/WBEs. To do this, Turner Construction has implemented lofty inclusion goals and an impressive educational program. Since 1980, Turner Construction’s total contracts awarded to M/WBEs and involvement with M/WBE joint venture partnerships has totaled over $12 billion. In 2011, Turner Construction spent over $1.1 billion with M/WBEs across the country with more than 3,600 contracts. This marked the seventh consecutive year that Turner Construction met or exceeded its annual M/WBE participation goal of one billion dollars. Because of these impressive figures, Turner Construction has received more than 100 awards for leadership in utilization of M/WBEs. In 2012, Turner Construction has been selected as one of “America’s Top Organizations for Multicultural Business Opportunities” for the third consecutive year. While Turner Construction has 5,000 employees in offices around the world, the Kansas City office currently has about 100 employees. Founded in 1988, the Kansas City office serves a four-state area of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa. Over the past five years, the Kansas City office has awarded more than $108 million to minority-owned businesses and $115 million to women-owned businesses

in the metro area. Contracts with M/WBEs through projects in the Kansas City Turner Construction office reached over $48 million in 2011 alone; representing 22 percent of overall business. Turner Construction works on some of the highest profile projects in Kansas City, as well as across the country, and consistently exceeds its already ambitious supplier diversity goals; treating these goals not as maximums, but as minimums.

Inside Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway

Instances of Turner Construction going above and beyond their commitment to diversity are prevalent in many top projects in the Kansas City area. The Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway opened in early 2012 to much excitement, along with praise for Turner Construction f0r exceeding its M/WBE and local business participation goals. Initially, participation goals sought to include 15 percent locally owned, 15 percent minority-owned and 7 percent women-owned businesses for construction, a combined goal of 28 percent. Out of all the construction contracts managed by Turner Construction sent out for

bids, the Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway project utilized 44 percent locally owned businesses, 16 percent for minority-owned businesses and nearly 26 percent for women-owned businesses, a combined total of 86 percent. Businesses that qualified for multiple categories were included in the statistics for all applicable categories.

minority and women business utilization was a key factor, which included McKissack & McKissack and the Gilford Corporation, nationally viable minority firms that were chosen as our joint venture partners. The goal was to have visible minority and women businesses construct the project. These firms were main players in the successful completion of the MLK National Memorial. We simply followed our corporate goal by enhancing the utilization of minority firms, as we have for over forty years,” adds Mr. Smith.

“We were blessed to be selected as the construction manager on such a worldwide viable project as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project in Washington, DC,”

The new Arrowhead Stadium

Additionally, Turner Construction participated in a recent project at Arrowhead Stadium, home of the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs. Turner Construction worked on a large-scale improvement project for Arrowhead Stadium, using 19 percent MBE contractors and 7 percent WBEs. As part of this project, Turner Construction teamed with Kansas City MBE, Greenleaf Construction. Earlier, on a smaller renovation and addition project at Arrowhead, Turner Construction aimed even higher and set an initial goal of 15 percent MBE, 5 percent WBE participation, and ended up achieving 24 percent and 14 percent, respectively. These notable inclusion goals are applied on projects throughout the country, including major national projects like the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial, which was recently opened in Washington, DC. More than 83 percent of the over 100,000 hours worked on this project were completed by M/WBEs. Additionally, The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial project exceeded its minority business utilization goal by 38 percent. Hilton Smith, Senior Vice President for Corporate and Community Affairs at Turner Construction Company, is extremely proud of both the project and the diverse businesses involved. “We were blessed to be selected as the construction manager on such a worldwide viable project as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project in Washington, DC,” says Mr. Smith. “The diversity of

— Hilton Smith Supplier diversity at Turner Construction is not just about inclusion and participation on projects, but also education. The Turner School of Construction Management is an eightweek course taught by professional Turner staff on such topics as risk management, construction estimating, safety and effective marketing. More than 15,000 individuals have graduated from this program over the past 40 years. This program is held at facilities across the country, and included 1,206 businesses and entrepreneurs in over 31 cities. Turner Construction will hold its 15th class in Kansas City during 2012. Graduates of the Turner School of Construction Management often become project participants after program completion. Through projects and programs like these, Turner Construction has developed a long and positive track record of utilizing M/WBEs on projects across the country. Turner Construction has maintained its sterling reputation by consistently striving to do more and also offering M/WBEs of all sizes a chance to grow, develop, and prosper.
