MLK JR DRIVE

T E E R T S D A O BR

SCALE : 1”=250’

The site chosen for this project is a 4600 square foot piece of land at the corner of Broad Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Since the empty lot is located between two existing buildings, the general approach was to design a structure that has the characteristics of an infill project. Research done during the 1st half of the semseter on Opulence dictated an architecture focused on the interior. The nature of experiences with opulent structures of the highest order requires one to be fully immersed in a space in order for the effect to be viable. Therefore, the compact, infill site allows the architecture to turn itself inwards and focus on interior details: corners, transitions, niches, thresholds, etc. Community members will enter the building frontally from Broad Street and thus his/her primary experiences will take place within the the building.

ZONING DESIGNATION: SPI-1 (Special Public Interest) Footprint: 4600ft2 SITE ATTRIBUTES: Broad Street is one-way, which reduces automobile traffic Plenty of off-street parking at either ends of the site (between Mitchell and MLK) Trees, light posts, bus stop canopies, and low-rise buildings give the street a nice pedestrian scale

Has the potential to become a vibrant streetscape and a revitalized part of downtown

The site’s zoning designation SPI-1 coincides with Atlanta’s plan of “imagine Downtown”, implemented in 2006 Imagine downtown encourages more mixed-use, urban development in an attempt to create a vibrant, 24-hr environment where people can live, work, meet, and play

VISUALIZING OPULENCE INDEPENDENT OBJECT

THE DRAWING ROOM - LANCASHIRE ENGLAND, 1890

ABSTRACTION STACKING

FIGURE-GROUND JUXTAPOSITION

RESULTING BOUNDARY

object / wall / moulding create a boundary that blurs the line between foreground / background

Blur Filter Applied corner of wall creates a boundary that separates stacking (right side) from an empty zone (leŌ side)

while the chair leg becomes the boundary, the background becomes the stacking object

HDR Toning Map Applied

as more objects are ‘stacked’ into the room, each abstracted result shows the level of inherent opulence these objects possess

The Stacking Of Objects Within This Opulent Interior Depends On The Photographer’s DiscreƟon, With An Eye Toward Making All Elements Visible Within The Given Frame

Gradient maps applied to other environments exhibit similar characterisƟcs. They tend to flaƩen out the image allowing each image’s inherent Opulence to be seen

The characterisƟcs of Opulence can be found here in the Henderson imageas well as the resulƟng Victorian Interior abstracƟon. Many elements, many forms, lines and colors stacked upon each other, and an overall sense of variety are features common to both images

When a gradient map is applied, the resulƟng abstracƟon image tends to exhibit similar stacking / layering characterisƟcs analagous to the Henderson Image

STACKING OPULENCE - WILLIAM BURGES INTERIOR FREQUENCY MAPS

PATTERN APPLICATION

The basic principle behind the diagram involves its use of the eye to ‘scan’ the image from leŌ to right. Any detecƟons of interference from the baseline amount of Opulence (shown on the leŌ) is represented by a ‘blip’ that corresponds to A) Its posiƟon in space and B) Its inherent level of Opulence

VIA GRASSHOPPER SCRIPT

As the points become more numberous and vectors more varied, the ensuing curve becomes more complex. dŚĞ ǀĞĐƚŽƌƐ ƌĞƉƌĞƐĞŶƚ ǀĂƌŝŽƵƐ ŵĂŐŶŝƚƵĚĞƐ ŽĨ ƉŽŝŶƚƐ ĞdžƚĞŶĚŝŶŐ ĨƌŽŵ ƚŚĞ ŐĞŶĞƌĂƟŶŐ ĐŝƌĐůĞ͘ Virtually any closed curve can be derived from this system.

A script was developed here that allowed us to take the rules we found in the Henderson image and recreate them on a blank canvas. As each curve approaches each other, the center curve deflects to accommodate the new geometry
