The Business of Wellness WHY IT’S BOOMING AND HOW PEOPLE ARE PRIORITIZING HEALTH

Consumers are changing their outlook on their health and how they access treatments that go beyond a traditional doctor’s appointment. Even before the pandemic, when many people had a deeper realization of their own mortality, there was a shift in prioritizing health from a holistic standpoint. Many are making big changes to their lifestyle and spending more money on treatments that maximize their health and well-being — both physically and mentally.

Factors Driving Growth

While there are likely many factors that have led to the huge growth in the wellness industry, there is one reason that has catapulted wellness businesses into new territories: information.

People from all walks of life are looking online to improve their health journeys and look to wellness businesses that offer ‘out of the box’ technologies and treatments.

For example, West Omaha Cryotherapy, specializes in cryotherapy — a unique treatment that involves cooling the body’s tissues for therapeutic purposes. The business also offers full-body light therapy, an infrared sauna, and more.

“Most people have a desire to achieve a higher level of well-being,” said Matt Carney, CEO of West Omaha Cryotherapy. “Having endless information at our fingertips on how to achieve that goal provides more clarity into turning that desire into a reality.

“This information being available not only helps people to understand how to become healthy, but also shines light on the very real consequences those who are not focused on health may face down the road. Understanding these consequences is a great motivator. Companies like ours are popping up all over the nation. This availability of incredible technologies and modalities to the general public not only piques interest, but makes achieving higher health more attainable.”

Another factor that has driven growth is the rising cost of health

care. In short, people are paying more to get medical treatment. Many have discovered that if they stay healthier, they can avoid hospital stays, emergency room visits, or other appointments that increase their out-of-pocket expenses.

Timothy Rexius, owner of Rexius nutrition stores, VHI Supplements International, and Iron Heaven Gym’s fitness facilities, said that steep health care prices have helped light a fire within people to transform their lifestyles.

“Health care costs are at an all-time high and especially after the pandemic people saw the data; folks who were affected the worst were the unhealthy and overweight group,” he said. “It was a wakeup call for people to realize that you only get one body, and you’d better take care of it because an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of the cure.”

Angela Wilson, owner of Float Center agrees that there has been a shift in thinking about health and wellness.

“Proactive consumers consider information and options far beyond ‘an apple a day,’” she said. “And people don’t just want to keep the doctor away; they realize physical, mental, and emotional health are inextricably intertwined, and they want to optimize their overall well-being on a holistic level.”

Casey Kuhl co-founder of Live Hydration Spa, an IV therapy spa, said that people understanding that they can take their wellness into their own hands has driven growth for the industry.

Customers of the spa are wanting to boost their immune system and improve their well-being through hydration and essential vitamins and minerals.

Social Media Impacts

There’s no argument that social media has indeed changed all aspects of our culture. While it has created an environment that encourages communication and virtual connection with others, it has also fed into how people access information about health and wellness topics.

The world of social media and health is a double-edged sword, however. While it has given consumers the opportunity to learn more about important health and wellness topics, it has also opened the can of misinformation, which can have a detrimental effect over time.

“Influencers have had a big impact,” Carney said. “Not only do their followers have a personal connection with their story and

content, but the information they’re also receiving is usually delivered in a palatable and entertaining manner.

“Additionally, we have a wealth of content creators that can take traditional, scientific research and deliver that information in a package that’s easily understood by everyday people. There’s also a motivational component to this equation. It helps to have someone to look up to who is the perfect picture of health and to understand that if you follow the right path, you can achieve what they have achieved.”

Rexius reiterated that even though social media can be used for good, it also has its limitations.

“The ability to share ideas and products, routines and diets to the masses is an amazing opportunity,” he said. “Now that being said, it’s a pay-to-play game now with social media so if you’re not paying them not that many people are going to see what you have to share anymore.

“The issue here is now about who has the money, not the best idea. Another trend is everyone is a ‘coach’ now. This is not good … a lot of folks on social media claiming to be a coach are inadequately qualified to be a health coach of any sort.”

Current Industry Trends

Rexius believes that the rise of ‘vlogging’ of personal fitness journeys has been something that has caught the attention of many consumers.

“As someone who’s always been into the fitness and wellness scene, it can get to be too much, but on the other hand if watching someone else’s personal journey motivates even one person to get off the couch and start to take their health seriously then it’s all worth it,” he said.

Wilson, whose business at the Float Center emphasizes the importance of parasympathetic nervous system activation to support well-being, said that many trends in wellness can be viewed as tools that promote balance between parasympathetic and sympathetic activity.

“The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for the body’s rest and relaxation state, the flip side of the sympathetic nervous system’s ‘fight or flight’ response that is often over-activated by the

stress, speed, and uncertainty of our modern world,” Wilson said. “At the physical level, parasympathetic activation slows the heart rate, lowers blood pressure, promotes digestion, and enhances immune function.

“It relieves stress, promotes sleep, and enhances immune function. The beauty of float therapy is that it’s kind of like meditation without the effort and massage without the masseuse. Instead, we provide a carefully calibrated environment that allows your body and mind to slip effortlessly into parasympathetic activation. Float pools are sometimes referred to as sensory deprivation tanks, but I think the language of deprivation fails to capture the life-changing benefits of giving your body and mind the peace and quiet to just be.”

Carney said that there are a few trends that stand out. “The use of cold, heat, light, oxygen, etc. to hack our biology and induce phenomenal changes to our health and regenerative processes is infinitely interesting to me,” he said. “I believe these types of wellness-promoting activities will become commonplace in the not-so-distant future.”

Adaptability has been key in following trends in the industry. “The wellness industry has had to be able to adapt and change quickly with all the new things that come out,” Kuhl said. “[That’s] positive for us in the IV therapy space as people were not wanting to get sick or feel terrible and they turned to us to help them.”

Looking Ahead

With consumer awareness at an all-time high and more wellness experts and companies recognizing the benefits of treatments that can give people a more well-rounded healthy lifestyle, the future of the wellness industry is bright.

“Feeling great is infectious,” Carney said. “The better people feel, the more they want to push their health into the next tier. That brings folks back for more and helps them to achieve things they never knew they could.”

At BCBSNE, WELLNESS IS

MORE THAN A NEW YEARS’

The Times Square ball has dropped; calendars have flipped from December to January; festive out-of-office messages have been retired. For many — perhaps bouncing back from months of holiday treats — this season is one for planning ambitious health goals for the year ahead. A few of us might even see those goals survive until February.

For Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE), a focus on employee health is a year-round commitment. Led by Wellness Coordinator Caroline Kahnk and supported by a volunteer committee, the health insurer’s wellness initiative is as much an investment in the team as a model for its peers in the business community.

Investing in Employees’ Physical Wellness

BCBSNE’s headquarters in Omaha’s Aksarben Village features a Wellness Center where employees have 24/7 access to exercise machines, free weights, and fitness equipment. The building overlooks Omaha’s Keystone Trail, giving team members the option to run, walk, or bike outside during more pleasant weather. Locker and shower facilities allow workers to fit in physical activity throughout the day.

Since the pandemic, BCBSNE’s workforce has shifted to a hybrid model. As a result, the company has innovated its wellness program to help employees stay active and attain their fitness goals, wherever they are.

Wellbeats, a digital app, hosts a library of exercise videos and guided workouts so users can find content tailored to them, on-demand.

“We want to meet our team wherever they are,” Kahnk noted.

Vitality, another platform, awards users points for completing activities and tracking their workouts.

“Vitality is like a game,” said Melissa Young, clinical operations program manager at BCBSNE. “I am trying to earn as many points as I possibly can throughout the year. The ultimate reward of all this work and effort has been seeing my ‘Vitality age’ (which is calculated by an online assessment measuring the user’s health) be lower than my actual birth age. It has reinforced the work and choices I am making daily are having a positive impact on both my physical and mental health.”

Recognizing the business case for employee wellness, BCBSNE goes further. The company offers cash rewards to employees who reach certain point thresholds.

The virtual aspect of the wellness program at BCBSNE has allowed for more inclusivity and for those who work exclusively at home to participate in wellness events. One such recent event is the “Scale to Better Health Challenge,” a 12-week weight loss challenge that saw 81 participants lose a combined total of 1,104 pounds.

RESOLUTION

Steps to Build a Culture of Wellness

Kahnk is quick to offer some pointers for companies who want to promote a healthy team but can’t provide a full Fitness Center experience.

“There are concrete steps you can take this year to promote a culture of wellness. Obviously not every company can make room for on-site treadmills and showers,” Kahnk explained, “but maybe you can partner with the gym down the road to give your employees access.”

Leadership has an opportunity to foster wellness through daily interactions, Kahnk noted. When possible, managers could encourage their reports to flex wellness time into their day. For example, a busy parent’s only opportunity for a short run might be midday. “Maybe you encourage that person to block their calendar for a short jog before lunch. You seemingly lose a half-hour of productivity, but in reality, the benefits the company gets back are so much greater.”

Employees and companies both benefit from a clearer mind, sharper focus, fewer sick days, better morale and increased employee retention, to name just a few benefits.

‘We

Want to Walk the Walk’

With the hybrid schedule at BCBSNE, Kahnk and the rest of the Wellness team are working to bring back the activities and events that on-site workers miss the most, like group fitness classes.

“Overall, BCBSNE’s wellness program has changed, but its mission has not,” Kahnk said. “The Wellness team is still dedicated to meeting people where they are, and providing employees with the best experience possible.” And while fitness centers are an attractive employee perk, BCBSNE leadership is clear about the purpose behind their program.

“An important part of our program is to ‘walk the walk,’ so to speak. We want to be a force for good in this state and help every Nebraskan to live healthier and happier — to have more good years,” said Kahnk. “That starts with us as an employer supporting healthy habits among our team. Then they carry the mission to our neighbors across the state.”

First sparked in 2001 as The Light of Wellness Award, Ignite Awards by The Wellbeing Partners now recognizes, on a monthly basis, our Midlands neighbors who are bettering overall health — one person, organization, and community at a time.

Lori Thomas, director of workplace culture & wellbeing, said the award recognizes a pioneer in the worksite wellness movement: the late William M. Kizer, chairman emeritus of Central States Indemnity and founder of what would become The Wellbeing Partners (previously Wellness Council of the Midlands or WELLCOM).

“Forty years later, the mission continues reaching thousands of employees across the Midwest,” Thomas said.

Historically, winners were recognized annually during a signature event.

“Due to the pandemic, the gala moved to a virtual event in 2020,” Thomas explained. “In 2022, we decided to move to recognizing a winner every month throughout the year.”

Its evolution is deeper than a name or format change.

“We welcomed a new CEO and several new team members,” Thomas said. “We know that our members live, work and play in our

communities. And we aim to be the connector for them to integrate workplace and community well-being, and connect the people that need resources to the people that are providing the resources.”

Thomas also looked ahead to recognizing Ignite Award and Governor’s Wellness Award winners at its annual Xchange Summit in the fall — winners like Union Bank & Trust’s Stephanie Pitner.

Stephanie Pitner, UBT

Pitner embodies the transformations that movers and shakers in workplace wellness strive for. In a video featured on The Wellbeing Partners website, Pitner shared her lifelong struggles with selfconfidence, anxiety, and depression. Taking advantage of workplace offerings like yoga and strength training, Pitner has changed. She feels better. She moves better. She keeps up with her niece and nephew.

“It’s wonderful that UBT realizes there is more to health than just the physical aspects,” Pitner said. “I love the monthly wellness seminars offered to employees, which cover a vast range of topics to help folks learn, grow and ask any questions they might have regarding said topic.”

Employee Wellness Advocate, Sam Dolezal, represents those who support Pitner and others on their wellness journeys.

It all stemmed from UBTwell, a worksite program formed by a committee in 1993.

“UBTwell has evolved to incorporate many different dimensions of wellness and strategies in helping associates make choices today for a healthier tomorrow,” Dolezal said.

She highlighted virtual and digital offerings and shifts from physical wellness to “holistic” wellness. Strides are reflected by personal stories like Pitner’s.

“Associates are appreciative of the opportunities to improve their professional and personal selves, along with continued associate engagement in the program,” she said, while a recent increase in annual wellness exams, flu shots and preventive services was also noted.

Pitner further applauded the efforts of team members like Dolezal.

“Having leadership within the wellness program who genuinely care about your health, are there to answer any questions you might have, who encourage and motivate you, and help you adjust any workouts or make suggestions … is also an essential ingredient,” she said. “When I let friends know about our wellness program and our classes/facility, they are quite amazed.”

Dolezal indicated organizations of all sizes can “do it” — encourage

further support families – including any vicarious trauma experienced through work.

“We strive to provide a culture where staff know their well-being is a priority,” Rangel said. “We hold weekly yoga/meditation sessions where staff have the space to unwind and allow themselves to slow down. We also try to incorporate mindfulness into our culture by starting meetings with breathwork, meditation or some sort of mindful awareness activity.”

Additionally, Completely KIDS models the culture it wishes to see.

“Another thing that makes us stand out is the ability for our clients to see themselves in us,” she said. “We have three bilingual, Latinx therapists, two male plus myself. We are able to understand the complexities of issues our families bring to us because we have walked a similar life to theirs. It helps bring a sense of trust and understanding from the very beginning.”

Rangel further imparted words of encouragement that, while working on oneself requires time and commitment, “it doesn’t have to be huge strides if it’s not something you already do. Taking small steps to take care of your overall well-being will have ripple effects in your life.”

positive success among associates. Such successes don’t require a health and wellness background.

“Your passion, drive and ability to see the positive can be enough to get your program off the ground or to the next level,” she said.

Johanna Dunlevy, EFR

The roots of wellness nonprofit EFR Employee & Family Resources traces back to 2011, as a complement to an existing Employee Assistance Program benefit in place for many decades prior, according to Johanna Dunlevy, wellness manager.

“More employers have begun to understand the importance of addressing mental health in the workplace,” she stated. “Workplace wellbeing programs are no longer walking campaigns and tobacco cessation. Employers are starting to recognize the importance of EAP benefits and how they can be integrated in the overall well-being approach.”

Furthermore, Dunlevy said EFR has been involved with The Wellbeing Partners since 2016, collaborating on many networking events in Iowa, and forums and panels. Its success, too, was attributed to emotional well-being as the foundation of total well-being.

Dunlevy further underscored how one in five adults in the U.S. live with diagnosable mental illnesses.

“When you think about your workforce, think about the 20% of individuals who are likely in need of additional support or resources but aren’t sure where or how to access help,” she said. “Having a full-service EAP in place and promoting it is one way you can provide access to mental health services.”

She acknowledged lingering stigmas, saying “the more we can normalize that it exists, there are ways to address it, and it is not something to hide, the greater our chances are to improve the lives of those struggling now and those who may encounter a mental illness in the future.”

Lulu Rangel, Completely KIDS

The Completely KIDS Mental Health program has grown from Clinical Director Lulu Rangel and two part-time therapists to two fulltime bilingual therapists, three part-timers and a mindfulness specialist.

Rangel said expansion meant its preventative services could be offered year-round. Plus, its individual therapy capacity increased.

“We served close to 700 kids and adults in 2021 and are on target to exceed that for 2022,” she said.

Furthermore, its mental health initiative supports the staff who

OPPD’s Stacey Centarri and Robin Keller

Wellness Specialist Stacey Centarri said Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) has become more flexible and understanding of remote work, and how to engage employees physically and mentally “in a new world” as its wellness has evolved.

“In 2023, OPPD Wellness and Safety are taking the next step in expanding efforts to ensure a workplace culture that recognizes and supports positive employees and their family’s mental health,” Centarri said.

In conjunction with The Wellbeing Partners, its Mental Health Campaign will involve the creation of a mental health toolkit, quarterly coffee chats and mental health first aid to “increase awareness and support of mental health issues,” “reduce stigma around mental health” and “make mental health a priority,” according to Centarri.

Customer Billing Analyst Robin Keller also referred to its new employee resource group: Empowering Working Families.

“OPPD’s Empowering Working Families was established to give support in a multitude of ways for the things that happen outside of work and career development — the issues that impact their lives and impact their families,” she said. “Our core focus areas are family wellness, mental health and suicide prevention, and elder/sandwich generation caregiving.”

Centarri further spoke to three key ingredients to OPPD Wellness success: “One size does not fit all approach in all we do to support the holistic well-being and work-life balance; listening to our employees and supporting them wherever they may be on their wellness journey; and physical and mental health are equally important components of overall health.”

Keller added that readers should “walk the talk.”

“The things that happen at home are equally (if not more) impactful on their mental health, their physical health and their ability to perform their day-to-day responsibilities,” she stated. “In order to truly support our employees, we must acknowledge life beyond the nine-to-five workday. In doing so, we learn how to better communicate with one another, how to navigate challenges more effectively, and how to empower them to be fully engaged and thriving employees.”

Quality Living Inc.

A positive and healthy work culture has always been a priority at QLI, according to President and CEO Patricia Kearns.

“We’ve promoted a number of physical wellness programs over the years that had an impact on some of our team members,” she said. “Over recent years, our focus has turned toward partnering with local community resources focused on emotional wellness and skills for navigating life disruptions.”

Additionally, Kearns said by cultivating strategies that create camaraderie, trust and respect, optimism and even fun in the workday, has further created a sense of belonging and an emotionally safe community.

“With this safety and belonging comes an opportunity for each of our team members to be their best selves and to thrive,” she said.

“Our team members have to lean into it. But it helps that they are surrounded by people who are invested in their success and in an environment that is supportive of positive change.”

Buy-in from leadership and direct supervisors is also an essential element.

“I am equally proud to recognize the dedication of our supervisors to these efforts for the team members they supervise,” Kearns added. “Our supervisors are empowered to make in-the-moment decisions that support the well-being of our team members.”

She encouraged readers to seek out community resources, like The Wellbeing Partners.

“They have expertise that most of our businesses don’t have, but our team members desperately need,” Kearns said.

And consider how well-being transcends a one-time program. “Well-being is a way of being,” she said. “Formal programs may have value in starting a new routine, but real impact and progress comes from the steady, positive shifts that can be sustained. If you prioritize building optimism, gratitude, trust, respect and believing in people into the routines of your workplace culture, you will make a big impact on the well-being of your team members.”

Region 6 Behavioral Healthcare

Region 6 Behavioral Healthcare supports a network of mental health and substance abuse treatment providers who treat the uninsured and underinsured. As such, Senior Manager of Prevention Services Crystal Fuller said wellness is highly valued for its employees. Its long-standing wellness committee has driven notables, such as its Wellness Points Program where staff is rewarded for healthy behaviors, like getting flu shots and annual exams. As they go along they accrue points, which add up to paid time off (up to one full day) at the end of the year.

Furthermore, it has provided Mental Health First Aid training, which equips participants with a five-step action plan on how to connect, listen, and support individuals who are experiencing mental health challenges.

In 10 years, the organization’s trainings have spanned 330 courses and nearly 5,000 participants.

Today, Region 6 is a partner with The Wellbeing Partners on its mental health stigma reduction initiatives.

“Consistent leadership across several years helps for sustainability,” Fuller said, when asked about the ingredients of success for employee programs.

“As for our community training initiatives … passionate, dedicated trainers are vital for the success of trainings. Skilled facilitation skills, understanding of the landscape of mental health system, and connection with the materials are also important and success drivers for our course instructors.”

Flexibility in tailoring materials and supporting individuals with tangible, applicable tools is also key.

“Really listening to individuals and group needs helps to incorporate relevant and creative programming,” she said. “Consistency and having a sustainability mindset are additional items to consider for success.”

Trek Up the Tower 2023 Community Event

The region’s leading vertical stair climb, Trek Up the Tower, will return in person on February 18, 2023. Companies and community members will come together to climb the 40 floors of the First National Tower in downtown Omaha on February 18, 2023, and/or they can virtually track their physical activity, from February 18- March 18, 2023.

Climbing to its 17th year, the community event is held each February as a fundraiser to support The Wellbeing Partners’ (TWP) mission to build wellbeing into the way communities and businesses grow through advocacy, collaboration, and education. The event was virtual the past two years due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“Trek up the Tower, sponsored by TWP and FNBO, is a time-honored tradition for the community, and we are excited to have the event back in person in 2023,” Kathy Nellor, TWP board member and Trek up the Tower volunteer, said. “This event not only raises the awareness of leading an active lifestyle but also supports TWP and its mission to build wellbeing into the way communities grow and do business.”

For the in-person vertical climb, people of all fitness levels will join to conquer the challenge. Some are competitive and train to run up the stairs to challenge the record time, while others are first-time climbers with the goal of finishing. Virtual participants will track their movement on a platform called MoveSpring, an app that pairs with your phone or fitness tracker and allows participants to engage

in friendly competition with friends, family, and coworkers with a real-time step leaderboard.

Participants can register as part of a team with coworkers, friends, or family. They can also dress in costume with this year’s “Intergalac-Trek” space theme.

For more details about Trek 2023, visit www.TrekUptheTower.org and find Trek Up the Tower on Facebook and Instagram.

Child Saving Institute

OMAHA, NE — Hope is defined as a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. Unfortunately, for many children and families, hope can seem unfamiliar. Child Saving Institute (CSI) has a rich 130-year history in the Omaha community of providing hope and healing to local children and families.

CSI originated in 1892 and was first known as an orphanage to safely house infants that needed a home, later becoming Omaha’s leader in infant adoption and pioneer of early childhood education locally. Today, the organization has evolved to meet the changing needs of the community—continuously providing hope and healing across its 15 programs to more than 2,500 children and families each year. From foster care to mental health services, early childhood education to an emergency shelter, CSI works to help children and families heal, grow and find hope for the future.

While deeply rooted in history, CSI is looking to enhance the future of care in the Omaha community as it plans to expand its services and physical footprint by launching a $46,000,000 capital campaign. CSI’s Campaign for Hope will allow the organization to continue to meet the dynamic needs of those it serves today, and over the next 100 years.

“The Campaign for Hope will allow CSI to continue to provide the critical services to more children and families in need on an expanded campus in a more deliberate, responsive and timely manner. Our community has a need, we are responding,” said Cindy Heider, Campaign for Hope Chair.

CSI has diligently evaluated the evolving needs of local children and families including the rapidly growing need for pediatric and adolescent therapy, an expanded emergency shelter, supportive early education services and additional access to high-quality early childhood education.

To expand these services, CSI will nearly double its physical building space centrally located at 45th and Dodge Street. This two-year project will allow for an on-site mental health clinic to be added to the facility, a newly built emergency shelter housing 16 beds for youth, four additional early childhood education classrooms with a STEAM classroom, and innovative treatment childcare classrooms added within its early childhood education center to address the needs of preschoolers unable to attend traditional school environments.

In the past six years, CSI has doubled the size of its mental health services program to meet the growing needs of the Omaha community. Yet, CSI has a waitlist of over 150 children and youth waiting to receive imperative therapy and medication management services. A purposefully designed mental health clinic providing therapeutic space that is conducive to address trauma, promote safety and allow for healing is critical for Omaha’s young population.

CSI’s current emergency shelter was originally built for young children, but the older teens who live there today have very different needs. The new emergency shelter will add robust educational services, a physical activity space and allow for youth to have their own bedrooms—all of which are essential to a youth’s successful physical, emotional and mental health.

As a leader in early childhood education for the last 50 years, CSI has evolved with the changing needs of children who need additional support. Unfortunately, there are many vulnerable preschoolers living in poverty and experiencing the impact of trauma in the Omaha community. Their ability to develop healthy

relationships—a key element of academic success—is negatively impacted by their experiences and environments, putting them at risk of expulsion. The Campaign for Hope enables CSI to directly provide supportive early education services for preschoolers unsuccessful in traditional early learning environments to help them to heal and prepare them for kindergarten... and for life.

Additionally, the need for high-quality early childhood education continues to outpace the availability on a national, state and local level. Locally, families often experience a nine-month wait, or even longer, in order to gain access to a childcare facility. The proposed expansion of CSI’s early childhood education center would increase its licensed capacity by 25%, enabling more Omaha families to receive high-quality early childhood education services and prepare more kids for kindergarten.

The project directly addresses the growing needs of the community, while also enhancing the day-to-day experiences of children, families and staff members at the organization. CSI has hired Kiewit to serve as the contractor and TACKarchitects to design the facilities.

“CSI is excited to be closing out yet another year with hope. Hope for all children and families living in Omaha despite their current or past circumstances. Together, we truly can build a stronger community. However, we can only do this work with the support of those around us. Thank you for the decades of past support, and we look forward to moving into the future together,” said Jaymes Sime, CSI President & CEO.

The Omaha community can join the effort in building a stronger community through CSI’s Campaign for Hope initiative by visiting childsaving.org/ campaignforhope.

Peyton Manning Huddle Up

Those who come to give blood or platelets during National Blood Donor Month will be entered to win a trip to Super Bowl LVII

This January, the American Red Cross and Pro Football Hall of Famer and blood donor Peyton Manning are asking people to score big for patients in need – while getting a chance to win a trip to Super Bowl LVII in Arizona – by giving blood or platelets.

The start of the new year marks National Blood Donor Month – a time to celebrate those who generously roll up a sleeve to keep blood products stocked for hospitals providing critical care. As the busy holiday season winds down and the threat of severe winter weather and seasonal illness cases continue to rise, January can be a tough time for donors to make and keep appointments.

Step off the sidelines and resolve to donate blood or platelets. To book a time to give, visit RedCrossBlood.org, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, or call 1-800-RED CROSS. In partnership with the National Football League (NFL), those who come to give blood, platelets or plasma Jan. 1-31, 2023, will be automatically entered to win a trip for two to Super Bowl LVII in Arizona*, including access to day-of, in-stadium pre-game activities, tickets to the official Super Bowl Experience, roundtrip airfare to Phoenix, three-night hotel accommodations (Feb. 10-13, 2023), plus a $500 gift card for expenses.

To lead the offense against a potential winter blood shortage, Manning invites the public to join him in helping save lives. “If everyone does their part and we collectively commit to donating blood, we can stack up more wins for hospital patients who are counting on us. A single individual is certainly impactful, but a whole team of people coming together to donate has an even greater effect.”

How to Donate Blood

Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood. org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.

Amplify Your Impact – Volunteer!

Another way to support the lifesaving mission of the Red Cross is to become a volunteer blood donor ambassador at Red Cross blood drives. Blood donor ambassadors help greet, check-in and thank blood donors to ensure they have a positive donation experience.

Volunteers can also serve as transportation specialists, playing a vital role in ensuring lifesaving blood products are delivered to nearby hospitals. For more information and to apply for either position, contact NEIAvolunteer@redcross.org or visit redcross.org/volunteertoday.

About the American Red Cross:

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides comfort to victims of disasters; supplies about 40% of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; distributes international humanitarian aid; and supports veterans, military members and their families. The Red Cross is a nonprofit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to deliver its mission. For more information, please visit redcross. org or CruzRojaAmericana.org, or visit us on Twitter at @RedCross.

The

Ethics

Conversations around ethics and values are not limited to the boardroom. Hiring managers across the country are facing new questions from potential employees around the company’s stance on social issues and ethical practices. Even more, a new generation of leader is being prepared inside of our university systems. An entire generation of future leaders like CJ Braccia, a student at Creighton University’s Heider College of Business and intern at the Business Ethics Alliance is on the horizon.

Q: Where does your interest in ethics come from?

A: Growing up my parents pushed me and my siblings to always be truthful and do what is right. I truly feel most of ethics comes from just doing what is right and doing good for others. My parents made it clear that I would always be okay if I made the ethical choice.

Q: Why should others care about ethics?

A: From a professional perspective, your business will certainly be more successful when you lead with ethics. Just as important however, you will be more fulfilled in your personal life when you begin putting ethics in the forefront of everything you do. I believe everyone has a duty to care about ethics. At its core, ethics is about caring for the greater good. We’re all on this earth together, so I believe it’s imperative that we care for one another.

Q: What role will ethics play in your job search?

A: Ethics will be at the center of my job search process. I think that if I chose to work for a company with an unethical culture, I wouldn’t be content with myself as a person. Additionally, I believe that ethics plays into all other facets of the company; from the bottom line to employee satisfaction, ethics is integral. I actively look for companies that have exceeded the ethical standard, rather than just met.

Q: What have you learned through your partnership with the Business Ethics Alliance?

A: The Business Ethics Alliance has been the single most formative part of my college experience. They have furthered my knowledge about the importance of ethics. They have opened my eyes to the ethical culture that the Omaha business community fosters. The Alliance has also taught me how to instill an ethical culture at a company. They’ve made me even more aware of the

importance of interpersonal relationships in an ethical workplace.

The Business Ethics Alliance taught me that an exceptionally ethical organization should not be the exception, rather the norm.

Braccia is a Scott Scholar at the Heider College of Business and is stepping into a leadership role with the Alliance as he helps bring to life their Ethical Leader Program (ELP).

The ELP will bring together students from Creighton University, University of Nebraska Omaha, and Bellevue University for a four-year program aimed at developing ethical leaders. In the program’s first year, students will partner with CEOs who have faced an ethical dilemma and practice ethical decision making to find their own path to resolution.
