HUMBL ROOTS SCALES PASTA SAUCE BUSINESS WITH UNIQUE INGREDIENT

Competing in a cocktail competition, Jacquelyn Burklund put a unique twist on a Bloody Mary by replacing tomato juice with carrot juice. Her new take on the popular breakfast cocktail won the competition.

What followed was another discovery — carrots served up a more gentle alternative to tomatoes for those who suffer from heartburn and other food sensitivities. It also provides an option for those seeking nightshade-free cooking. That’s when she and her husband Jake Burklund came up with a product, Carinara, a carrot-based pasta sauce.

“We decided to take the leap and go for it because we couldn’t find any alternatives out there that didn’t have any tomatoes,” Jacquelyn Burklund said.

Humbl Roots, the manufacturing company for the flagship product, officially launched in January 2023. The versatile sauce

can be used in traditional Italian dishes, as a marinade, or in soups, to name a few. Flavors include original, Spicy Cracked Pepper and Sweet Basil.

While she still works a full-time job, Jake, who is well-known in the local startup community for co-founding Scale Omaha and as a founding partner of Beeso Studio, transitioned to managing Humbl Roots full time.

Crushing Goals

The shift to full-time comes in part due to its quick ramp-up. This January, Humbl Roots entered a pitch competition as part of Hy-Vee’s OpportUNITY Inclusive Business Summit. The Burklunds walked away with the grand prize of $30,000.

At that time, Carinara was stocked in six Hy-Vee stores. After the event, Humbl Roots secured deals to be on the shelves of 17 Hy-Vees.

“It quickly got our name out there and we were able to connect with a lot of the [store] managers,” Burklund said.

Other stores supportive of local businesses stock Carinara including Made in Omaha, Ellsworth Crossing and Godega Market.

While this accomplishment has increased exposure, it brought on a new problem, they set a goal to be in 15 Hy-Vee stores in 2024; which they easily surpassed.

“We’re hoping to expand to retailers across the region,” she said. “So, getting outside of Nebraska as well.

“Also, we want to scale our production whether that’s finding a partner with a co-manufacturer to help us create bigger batches or build out our own facility in which we’ll have to invest in bigger equipment, and more people to join our team.”

Currently, Humbl Roots operates out of Council Bluffs-based Kitchen Council. A program of Advance Southwest Iowa Corp., the organization provides a Food and Drug Administration-approved commercial kitchen space for food startups.

“They’ve been very helpful getting through FDA regulations and all that. So they’ve been a really wonderful partner to start out with,” Burklund said.

Scaling for Success

Looking to the next step, Burklund said the growing pains of scaling the business to boost manufacturing is the company’s biggest obstacle.

“We’ve had to learn how to redo our process all over again,” she said. “We’ve had that challenge many times this last year, but we’re making sure the quality of the product comes out the same each time and we’re using really fresh whole ingredients and making the end product just as good as when we’re doing it out of our home kitchen.”

Humbl Roots will also build its brand ambassador program this year by doing samplings in the area Hy-Vees as well as working the farmers market circuits this summer.

“When people try the product, then they realize the benefits of it and some people are a little hesitant because it is something a little different,” Burklund said. “We just want to be consistent with our samplings and be in front of our customers.”

Burklund’s favorite part of running her own business is seeing people have a lightbulb moment when they discover a new cuisine option they thought they no longer could have.

“It’s so exciting to see customers when they realize they can have their favorite foods again, people who have had to get rid of tomatoes in their diet,” she said.

Burklund said that Humbl Roots hasn’t forgotten where it started and is currently working on a Bloody Mary mix that they hope to bring to market by the end of the year.

What are Nightshades?

The Solanaceae family of plants, or nightshade vegetables, include common staples such as tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and eggplants. These vegetables include glycoalkaloid compounds, which include nitrogen. According to the National Library of Medicine, these can cause gastrointestinal upset and inflammation for some. While there is no definitive study that proves eliminating nightshades improves inflammation, many have chosen to avoid them.

SELF-PROMOTION AND BEATING IMPOSTER SYNDROME

Eager, new graduates are spilling into the job market rapidly looking to begin their careers.

As they enter the workforce headfirst, the same questions usually arise, for example, what is the best way to promote myself? How can I create a resume that stands out? And how do I get over the feeling of imposter syndrome?

These questions are all normal and valid feelings that young professionals are faced with in today’s world, and while some answers are discovered through experience, others can be given through the advice of seasoned professionals, years into their careers.

Creating a unique resume and LinkedIn profile is one thing when figuring out how to sell yourself, but you can’t discount your experiences and how they make you stand out.

When it comes to promoting your unique and best assets to employers, Josh Planos, VP of communications & PR at the Better Business Bureau,

noted that “times have changed” and in 2024 a lot more skills are expected of young professionals.

“What is being requested of employees in 2024 looks a lot different from even just 5-10 years prior,” Planos said. “When you get out of school, it is helpful to think of what skills you can add to make you that much more attractive to an employer, but also to more effectively do your job.”

Upskilling Yourself

To grow in your career, it’s important to continue learning even after graduation. There are a lot more ways to upskill yourself in today’s digital age.

“For a long time, the only way you could upskill is by going back to school,” Planos said. “Nowadays, there are a ton of alternative avenues to gain skills that previously didn’t exist such as LinkedIn courses or professional organizations.”

I’ve learned more about myself through failing than succeeding. It’s important to take some risks, even if it comes at the cost of a disaster or two.

JOSH PLANOS, VP OF COMMUNICATIONS & PR, BBB

There aren’t many excuses to not be upskilling yourself nowadays, and sometimes it involves taking risks to get to the rewards. Kellee Mikuls, executive director of Ignite Nebraska, said that “you only grow when you’re uncomfortable” and if you find yourself too comfortable, that means it’s time to shake things up.

“The willingness to take risks has been the catalyst for every opportunity I’ve had,” Mikuls said. “If you look back on your career and see what skills you have and every chance you take risks, you’re going to acquire more skills and it’s going to help paint the bigger picture of what your purpose is.”

Imposter Syndrome

Finding your purpose in the professional world can be daunting for young professionals who are new to all different industries and job settings. There are even certain feelings like imposter syndrome that might hold back a great candidate from applying. While these feelings are normal, there are plenty of ways to overcome them.

“It doesn’t matter at the end of the day how you got there, what matters now, and the reason you will stay there, is that you’ve proven your capability,” said Mynesha Spencer, CEO of All of Us Together.

More professionals experience imposter syndrome than you might think.

“Imposter syndrome comes and goes throughout all ages and stages of life,” said Kristi Lynch, senior director of graduate, executive and professional business programs at the University of Nebraska Omaha. “Don’t discount all of the small experiences you had in your life where you gained valuable skills such as customer service or how to speak with people, those can really help assist you in professional settings.”

One effective way to overcome imposter syndrome and connect with colleagues is to seek advice and help from mentors and coworkers.

“My boss once told me if I can look at myself in the mirror at the end of the day and say you gave the best effort you could, then that’s good enough,” Planos said. “We’re all just trying to figure it out.”

Working through the kinks and hardships of new jobs, industries and colleagues is a lot to deal with when first entering the workforce, so understanding that you are doing the best you can, is a great start to giving yourself grace as a young professional.

“It’s important to approach every situation with a willingness to learn,” Mikuls said. “Ask yourself “Are you happy to be there” instead of “do you deserve to be there?” and recognize that it’s normal to feel doubt.”

Networking

Most professionals doubt or question themselves at some point in their careers. It’s helpful to have a wide and supportive network by your side if you are going through a similar situation.

“No matter what type of person you are, introvert or extrovert, it’s important to be authentic and approachable,” Spencer said.

Approaching networking situations with a great mindset could catapult opportunities you never saw coming. “It’s all about who you know” is still true to this day, and you never know when someone you met once in a professional network setting could be what sets you apart in getting your dream job.

“There are so many great opportunities where people are hungry to meet other people in Omaha,” Mikuls said. “People love to talk about themselves and are looking for human connections. Put yourself out there and actively seek people and opportunities. You will find that it will open so many doors if you do.”

Professional organizations are made to collaborate and meet like-minded individuals in your area. There are not only professional organizations that

you could be involved in, but also nonprofits or clubs that you have a passion for are ways to network as well.

“It’s important to get involved in different sorts of community activities in your area, like nonprofits and mentoring programs,” Lynch said. “Sharing your knowledge with different groups through mentoring kids or even volunteering your time at a place you are passionate about is a great way to network and serve your community, you never know who you might meet.”

Self-Promotion

LinkedIn can be a young professional’s biggest asset for self-promotion. It’s a time where you can post your thoughts on any topic, as well as connect with almost anyone. It’s vital for networking and job searching, at any age.

“Utilizing social media and having a strong profile on LinkedIn is very important for young professionals,” Lynch said. “A way to differentiate yourself from other candidates could be posting your thoughts on LinkedIn on different topics. Put yourself out there as an expert in the field, generate feedback and awareness to yourself, the more people that respect you, the greater chance you have of getting hired.”

It’s important to remember to remain professional when self-promoting,

while also staying true to yourself and showing your unique skills and brand that you have to offer.

“There’s a fine line between professionalism and authenticity. You should be operating like a professional, while also remaining authentic to yourself,” Spencer said.

In 2024 where anyone’s voice can be heard and shared on social media, Planos explained that you have to be a spokesperson for yourself,

initiatives you care about out of respect for your audiences,” Planos said. “It can be important to use causes as a guide for you to navigate networking or social media spaces new to you so you can rely on doing what you feel is right and creating a cohort around that.”

Social media can be essential for entrepreneurs. In Kellee Mikuls’ case, LinkedIn proved to be extremely successful as a fundraiser tool, as well as a way to connect with potential partners.

“The power of LinkedIn, if you’re doing it right and reaching out to people, is how you differentiate yourself,” Mikuls said. “It’s your network, personal brand and how you hone your own voice and find connections that will influence your career path.”

Words of Wisdom

Navigating the job market and workforce as a young professional can be overwhelming and exhausting. It’s important to remain open-minded to all opportunities that come about, talk things over with trusted mentors, and give yourself grace as you push through interviews, applications and cover letters. Lynch said it’s smart to keep openminded when job searching.

“Keep your eyes wide and willing to consider all different types of opportunities,” she said. “Very few of us stick with one career path or job for our whole lives. Give yourself credit for all the experience you have and think about how you could apply them to potentially different career paths or jobs, instead of being narrow-minded.”

When navigating the competitiveness of job searching, Spencer said that characteristics such as kindness and gratitude will take you a long way.

“You can be both kind and competitive. Everything I do, I do with kindness, as well as I practice gratitude every day,” she said. “If you embody those characteristics, you will go further than where just your college degree can take you.”

Mikuls explained how being eager for opportunity and not being afraid to fail will lead you to exactly where you’re supposed to go.

“Be hungry to be around people from all different backgrounds; opportunity happens to those who are present,” she said. “Stick your neck out and take some risks. I’m so glad that I failed. I learned so much about myself and I feel like I can withstand so many things in the future because I failed before. Through failure, risks and challenges are where you grow the most.”

Planos said you should stumble a lot in your career, and remember it’s okay to fall down.

“I’ve learned more about myself through failing than succeeding. It’s important to take some risks, even if it comes at the cost of a disaster or two.”

So, I’m of innovation she saw in the profession. So, despite never endeavoring to launch her own practice, she set out to do something about it through her firm, Vandenack Weaver. “I have total respect for all of the lawyers worked with leading up to this, but I’ve always been driven by the desire to use technology differently,” she said. “Technology wasn’t being used at law firms at that point, or to this day in many places, in the way that I envisioned it. “I initially founded this firm with a guy by the name of Mark Williams. We put our skills together and in 24 hours and for less than $5,000, we built database, built out our entire system, our website, everything.” Vandenack’s efforts eventually caught the attention of another progressive-minded firm, Duggan Bertsch, and on Jan. 1, 2024, the two practices entered into an affiliation agreement. Before she found such kindred legal organizations but in EO, you’re exposed to people of all types of businesses and they each have different walks of life,” she said. “In EO, people just connect; they just come up and talk to you and share their stories, share their successes, share their failures and are willing to just talk about it. “It’s also nice that it’s an international network, so you can go anywhere and connect. I’m a member of the chapter here in Nebraska but have friend in Chicago and have a friend in New York City and can attend EO events there and be a part of things. Unlike most people, the companies listed on Hockney’s resume for the past 17 years are all firms she’s launched and grown into successful ventures. Starting with JH Interior Design in 2007, Hockney expanded her business holdings to include Bouquet, full-service floral design studio, opened in 2014; The Studio by JH, retail store featuring a showroom and art gallery, opened in 2021; second interior design branch in Steamboat, Colorado;and finally The Winery, defunct wine shop and deli she and co-owner Holly Jones bought and resurrected in 2022. Hockney said despite the unique nature of each venture, there are certain foundational elements all her companies hold in common. “Consistently, know we have product that’s good,” she said. “I believe so strongly in what we can do and how we can take care of people that don’t doubt the of starting and then finding the people to carry out. Finding the right people, think, is always the hardest part.” Hockney said there’s lot that goes into the definition of the “right” people, but one component she’s leaned into is finding people good at the things she’s not as accomplished in. This hiring mentality helps her delegate responsibilities with confidence. “The best piece of advice could give is when you begin, you wear all the hats. was head of marketing, was head of finance, was head of HR, sales, design,” she said. “It’s determining which hat to give away first and giving away the ones you’re the worst at or just find yourself getting frustrated with because they take too much time or they’re not the best use of your time. It’s what led her to Entrepreneurs’ Organization Nebraska, where she’s understand that it’s lonely at the top or what it’s like to really put all your chips on the table,” she said. “But more important is being around people who have done things before you and can share their experience or what they would have done differently. “There is a belief in EO that the answers are within everyone, just takes some time and experience to get there. Caleb Schadel and Blair Racker. “I commuted from Honolulu to Omaha,” he said. “It was a really unique opportunity to be able to feel out private practice was what wanted to do with the rest of my life and see if this particular practice was a good fit. As that continued to go, discovered really wanted the challenge and the opportunities within private practice. was sort of energized by that challenge.” O’Brien said his military experience was mixed bag insofar as how prepared him for life as an people navigate fairly uncomfortable situations and just hard work. When you’re at sea, you work seven days a week. There are no vacations, there’s no break. “The part that did not learn in the Navy was basically how to create relationships and partnerships,” he said. “In the Navy, the patients just showed up whereas our practice is purely referral-based. There’s no direct-toconsumer marketing, it’s all basically B2B. Creating trust between the general dentists that send us patients and their patients and our practice was one of the original challenges but also one of the things that was energized by, and find lot of fulfillment in.” Part of O’Brien’s evolution as an entrepreneur has come through membership in Entrepreneurs’ Organization Nebraska, to which he was introduced by colleagues. He said the organization has given him a community of people of like mind and in similar situations that he can relate to. “[EO] sounded very intriguing to me and it’s helped with my responsibilities of managing the business challenges and whatnot. That’s been the part about EO that’s been the most fulfilling to me; it’s way that can challenge myself personally and professionally and create those collegial bonds with other people going through the same thing.” 8340 West Dodge Rd, Suite 101 • Omaha, NE 68114 FROM LEFT, CALEB SCHADEL, DDS, EO MEMBER JAMES O’BRIEN, DDS, AND BLAIR RACKER, DDS. Together we’ve created the magic that is Arbor Aesthetics. It wouldn’t be what it is without both of us together.” Jeff Grewe attributes the longevity of Arbor Aesthetics to a core initiative of making a generational impact, both on trees and its people. “I want families changed because mothers and fathers work here. want trees that survive the 20-year shelf life and are there 100 years from now,” he said. Doubling in size since the pandemic, the tree service provider offers a full range of residential and commercial services. Jeff Grewe said big contributor to that growth is the emphasis on building a strong team. “I don’t have one or two A players. have A players period. We have excellent people across the board,” Jeff Grewe said. “We’ve shared our story with our employees, and we’ve created an excellent place for people to thrive. “Our continued growth will be fueled by our unmatched opportunities for professional and especially personal development that we offer our people that think in terms of a vision, we’re going to continue to provide exceptional human experiences for our teammates and our clients and that is what we’re born from.” The couple gives a lot of credit to Entrepreneurs’ Organization for developing their business chops and leadership skills. “I joined EO Accelerator in 2014, which is an organization within EO that teaches entrepreneurs how to grow and scale their businesses to $1 million. [Arbor Aesthetics] was at a quarter of a million when joined and in a matter of two years we had grown to a million in size.” Amy Grewe said another impactful element of EO has been the close-knit forum which provides a platform for unvarnished talk on the joys and pressures of business ownership. “The forum is made up of other business owners, between six and 10 people,” she said. “Monthly, you’re meeting and talking about the top five and bottom five percent of your life, the successes and the failures that you wouldn’t share with other people. “This is a confidential space where you share your life experiences with others in a very trusted way. Essentials Natural Family Health

PROVIDING HEALING CARE TO PEOPLE OF ALL AGES

Dr. Kate Hansen and her team at Essentials Natural Family Health have set out to help patients in not only their physical health, but also their emotional, mental and spiritual health journeys.

Hansen started practicing chiropractic care in 2004. When her husband’s job relocated them to Omaha in 2009, she decided to take the leap and open a practice. In 2010, her clinic opened, offering natural options for health.

Focus on Women’s Health

She said the reason for opening her practice came from personal experience.

“When I opened Essentials, I was pregnant with my second child,” she said. “It’s such an important time in a woman’s life to pay attention to her health and to do anything naturally to help her

be comfortable with all the changes her body will go through in that miraculous process.

“It occurred to me that women expect to be in pain when they are pregnant and that is just not ‘normal.’ It’s common, but not normal. Any type of pain is your body signaling that something isn’t right and that was one of the main things I wanted to share with women experiencing pregnancy. It doesn’t have to be painful.”

Today, she and her team of 14 employees provide chiropractic care, massage therapy, acupuncture, clinical hypnotherapy, energy healing modalities, and wellness workshops. The practice specializes in women’s health – from fertility to pregnancy and postpartum.

Hansen’s practice has always employed female doctors and staff and takes pride in being woman-owned. The practice focuses on specific treatment plans that are catered to each person and their exact needs.

- DR. KATE HANSEN, OWNER, ESSENTIALS NATURAL FAMILY HEALTH

“We believe wholeheartedly in meeting people where they are in their health journey and in giving very individualized care,” she explained. “We believe in treating the ‘whole person’ – body, mind, and spirit.”

Empowering Partnerships

Looking ahead, Essentials Natural Family Health is collaborating with other healers who have the same principles. Kayla Vavra and Ashley Gleason, owners of You’re Soul Welcome, a healing arts collaborative, will be collaborating with Hansen and her team. The clinic will also partner with Heart Magic Healing, Evolved Energetics with Angela Shakti Sparks, Indigo Sage Reiki with Alexis Monahan, and others.

Hansen also recently launched a sister business, Beloved Wellness, which will help holistically support people through complimentary services.

Essentials Natural Family Health is also committed to giving back to the community and important causes whenever possible. For example, patients can purchase a line of stone bracelets in the office that are designed and made by women, and the clinic will give 10% of those profits to support women in need.

“We feel great about the contribution we are making to the health and well-being of the Omaha community and Nebraska as a whole,” Hansen said. “We know that each life that we help improve through healing — reduced pain, healthier habits, healing past traumas, improved quality of life, increased happiness, and sense of wellbeing — will have a ripple effect into the lives of all the people they interact with. It truly is a fact that as you heal, you are helping to heal everyone.”

DBS Burke

PRINT SOLUTIONS FOCUSED ON THE OMAHA COMMUNITY

Anyone marketing their business knows that the number of impressions is a key metric to track. What about an impression that lasts an average of 72 hours?

Direct mail campaigns have been DBS Burke’s bread and butter for more than three decades, and through its print and direct marketing services, it is helping small businesses reach target audiences and build their brands. A direct mail piece such as a postcard may sit on a consumer’s counter for an average of three days, giving that extra boost in name recognition.

DBS, which stands for “doing business successfully,” is the driving motto for the company, which was named the Greater Omaha Chamber’s Business of the Month for February.

“We don’t just want to print something for someone, we want them to see the results behind the efforts,” said owner Lloyd Elam, who took over the business in 2022.

The team works with businesses to increase their return on investment, and ultimately reduce marketing costs and reach a larger, targeted audience.

“At the end of the day, you can have the best laid out operational plans and you can have efficiencies, but if you don’t have customers what’s the point?”

Elam said.

In its 1,000-square-foot facility at 8961 H St. in Omaha, DBS Burke can produce over 2 million pieces of mail each month. Elam said its capabilities have helped customers save thousands of dollars by switching to Burke’s local facility versus say, an operation out of New York.

Marketing Legitimacy

Digital marketing may be at the forefront of many marketing campaigns, but Elam said direct mail isn’t going anywhere. He alluded to a higher chance for fraudulent emails to come across your email inbox, as well as a crowded market.

“If you’re a scammer, you’re not going to send out direct mail,” he said.

He gave the example of a roofing company. If a local business is sending mail consistently, when a hailstorm rolls around, consumers are going to be more familiar with the local company rather than the out-of-state businesses that flock to the metro afterward.

A Culture for All

Within the four walls of the business, Elam pulls from childhood experiences watching his father give a chance to anyone looking for a job.

“One of the things that I want DBS Burke to be remembered by, in my time and tenure, is that it’s a place where you can come and acquire skills you can transfer,” he said. “I think that’s really the thing that I pride myself on is that

Burke is a second-chance employer and the chance for people to acquire skills and capabilities and engage in lifelong learning.”

Staying Ahead of Competition

DBS Burke recently launched an online store to facilitate the sales of its print products. Elam predicts that 2024 will be a busy year for the company.

“This is going to be a very competitive year in so many industries, especially real estate where now the inventory is down, but you’ve got over 3,000 Realtors in this whole area,” he said. “The person who markets themselves the best and the person who communicates the best is the one that’s going to get that customer to sign with them to sell a home and to go buy a home.”

Elam noted that he is prepared for the continuous growth of the company, with the support of Senior VP of Sales and Marketing, Jay Durmaskin.

“We contribute to the economy of Omaha and help people achieve success,” he added.

PR Pro Monique Farmer Pens Book

CHART YOUR PATH: A 9-STEP METHOD TO GETTING UNSTUCK

If you know Monique Farmer, the founder of both Avant Solutions and Anvil Ready, you may be surprised to learn that she considers herself an introvert. It’s her love for writing and strategy that pulled her into the world of public relations and communications and has kept her there for over 20 years.

“I love the idea that it’s all a big puzzle,” she said. “It introduces a versatile array of puzzles for me to put together and no day is the same.”

She also said that she loves an opportunity to grow, and help others grow, which is, in part, how her venture as an author started.

“I feel like I’ve read a lot of books to help me in my journey,” she said. “Often in academia what happens is you learn about the theory. It’s all pie in the sky unless someone helps you figure out how to take the theoretical to practical, and that’s what I’m trying to do.”

Specifically, her book “Chart Your Path: A 9-Step Method to Getting Unstuck,” discusses how societal norms have confined many to live unfulfilled lives.

She writes: Societal pressures often dictate a specific life path: education, a wellpaying job, marriage, children, a beautiful home, with a white picket fence, a dog, and the promise of happily ever after. Admittedly, my own life has followed a similar path, largely because it’s what I was taught to do.

Broken down into three sections, Farmer describes the book as an echo of Ike and Tina Turner’s song “Proud Mary.”

Section one: A mellow start discussing how individuals end up feeling stuck in our culture.

Section two: Kicking it up a notch with a discussion around the science of agency and autonomy.

Section three: The full-blown crescendo where actionable insights will challenge readers to redefine themselves.

Throughout the book, Farmer shares her personal stories, as well as stories of other successful individuals who have struggled with being “stuck.”

For example, she interviewed her friend Angelia Stone, founder and publisher of Hope Magazine. Stone shared her journey of breaking free “from the stagnation she endured along with the emotional and financial abuse.”

“She disclosed things in this book that I would have never known,” Farmer said. “I applaud her for being that vulnerable about her journey.”

Being vulnerable was a challenge for Farmer, who said the experience of openly asking friends and family to support her endeavor was outside of her “comfort zone.”

“It’s completely out of my introverted comfort zone, but that’s how we grow,” she said. “And that’s what this book is about.”

Currently, the book is available on Amazon for Kindle, or in paperback.

OMAHA community foundation

MOVING FROM A COMMERCIAL FUND TO A LOCAL COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

Although a Donor Advised Fund, which is becoming a more and more popular charitable planning tool, can be established through a national financial institution, choosing to open a fund at local community foundation offers individuals, families and businesses much broader services, more personal attention, and deeper connections to local organizations whose work is essential to effecting positive change in our community. Many attorneys, accountants, and financial advisors are simply not aware that a Donor Advised Fund established at the Omaha Community Foundation is in many cases a far better fit for their clients than a fund held at a “commercial gift fund.”

As you meet with your clients, be sure to ask whether they’ve established a Donor Advised Fund, and if so, where it is administered. If a client’s fund is not at a community foundation, please give us a call. We would be happy to talk with you and your client about the ease and benefits of moving the fund to the Omaha Community Foundation.

The Omaha Community Foundation offers fundholders the same tax and administrative benefits as a commercial gift fund, including:

• Online access to the fund to view balances, contributions, and grants

• Simple process for recommending grants to favorite nonprofits and community initiatives

• Streamlined tax reporting, often represented by just one letter to provide to an accountant at tax time, even when the fund is used to support dozens of individual nonprofits throughout the year

• All back-office administration, tax receipts, recordkeeping, and other

requirements for the Donor Advised Fund’s 501(c)(3) status

• Favorable tax-deductibility of contributions to the fund

Above and beyond standard commercial gift funds, the Omaha Community Foundation offers high-level, customized services to our fundholders, including:

• Concierge-level, in-person service provided by knowledgeable staff who live and work in our community

• Acceptance of appreciated stock or complex assets such as real estate or closely-held stock

• Ability to have your giving fund managed by your existing financial advisor

• In-house experts who have a finger on the pulse of community needs, the strengths of specific nonprofits, and how to structure grantmaking for the highest possible community benefit

• Opportunities to collaborate with other donors who care about similar issues and forums to tap into local and national subject matter experts

• Family and corporate giving services to foster a well-rounded, holistic approach to charitable giving

• Hands-on assistance from local experts who understand both local and national needs, and welcome the opportunity to research and identify causes aligned with donors’ goals and priorities

Keep an eye out for clients’ Donor Advised Funds at commercial gift funds. You’ll be doing a tremendous service for your client, and you’ll be helping the local community.

We’re truly inspired by the roots of this historic franchise, and we look forward to carrying that spirit forward to loyal Little King customers, as well as a new generation of Omaha residents.” The 1500-square-foot store combines modern design and an inviting dining area with classic Little King branding and artwork. The following are some guidelines to consider when posting legal notices with the Midlands Business Journal:

1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document either through mbj.com or through the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address.

Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error.

All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information

2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment is now credit or debit card.

3. Deadline is 5 p.m. on Monday for a notice to start publishing that Friday.

4. All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts.

5. Invoices must be paid prior to publication.

Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document to the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information 2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment options are cash or check.
Deadline is noon on Tuesday for a notice to start publishing that Friday.
All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts.
You will receive a paid invoice copy the first week it runs LOCAL LEGAL LEGAL notices Page 1 • October 1 2021 Scan the QR code or Visit MBJ.com to |submit a notice.
