Explosive Growth

JAFFERY INSURANCE DRIVES EXPANSION WITH TECH PLATFORM

Entering its 10th year, independent agency Jaffery Insurance & Financial Services has grown “100 times,” according to brothers, Cyrus and Ahmad Jaffery, in no small part due to its industrytransforming product, Quotamation.

The duo, who serve as CEO and president of operations respectively, rolled out its tech platform in response to challenges associated with becoming an independent agency.

“We were with a captive agency till 2019 and worked and represented one company,” Cyrus Jaffery explained. “We went independent May of 2019. So, now we have access to 20 different companies instead of one.”

He noted the move was a means of working “for the client – not the company.”

“Our fiduciary responsibility is the client now, versus the company,” he stated. “It’s pretty powerful when you tell a client

that you truly have their best interests in mind and will find them the best option that the market has to offer — versus pushing them into one bucket.”

The Jafferys also noted how the industry is “headed towards the independent channel.” So, they decided to get ahead of the curve to guide the broader direction. Quotamation represents the firm’s largest accomplishment thus far and is designed to simplify quoting.

“[The] independent agency side is extremely complicated because you now have to understand and work with 20 different companies and learn three to four different tech stacks or management and [customer relationship management] systems to store data and quote,” Ahmad Jaffery said. “Working with 20 different companies is extremely time-consuming and it was taking our team about four hours to quote one client from start to finish.”

The brothers recognized this as a “huge disadvantage” on the

independent side. So, two years ago, they partnered with Lincoln’s Vrly and rolled up their sleeves to build a platform, whereby all data points (personal info, vehicles, drivers in the household) are automatically pulled and put in one main application programming interface (API) that generates quotes from multiple carriers. An agent can now get a quote from 20 companies in 60 seconds.

“This gives us a huge advantage,” Ahmad added. “We can now close a client from start to finish within 10 to 20 minutes, versus four hours before.”

Furthermore, this distinct advantage has made a pivotal difference in their recent profitability.

“When you can fix your biggest issue in your field, it’s easy to quantify growth in the last 12 months,” Cyrus Jaffery said.

Notably, the leadership said agents can now work on the “fun side” of insurance: selling. They’re not caught up in the mire of doing the “grunt work.”

“We are giving the power to the agents to go do what you love, make more money and have excellent client experience,” Cyrus Jaffery added. “This, in turn, will make the agency more money, keep our staff happy, and the clients have an experience that they have never received before.”

In fact, Ahmad Jaffery noted that the company is white labeling the product to all personal lines’ agents across the country.

“So, everyone can use this and take advantage of the fast-quoting process,” he explained. “Since our launch of Quotamation [12 months ago], our business has exploded and we can’t wait to see how it helps other agents across the country.”

Getting to the ‘Heart’ of the Firm

While an important driver, Quotamation is still but one of the attributes responsible for the growth of the firm, which also includes brother, Vice President of Sales Bobby Jaffery, and sister on the customer experience side, Suman.

“We attribute the firm’s growth and traction to our 100-people organization, especially the 20 that are W2 employees,” Cyrus Jaffery said. “Our organization is innovative, thinks big and is on a

mission to change our industry as a whole.”

Furthermore, Cyrus’s leadership style lends itself to growth; others around the CEO are empowered and this approach can then cultivate more leaders inside of the organization.

“We would say that’s by far our biggest attribute to our growth,” he said. “We have grown from three people in our organization in early 2020 to almost 100 today.”

The essential need to leverage technology through the pandemic has strengthened the agency and industry.

“We have taken the time to build our own technology,” Ahmad Jaffery said. “And I’m not sure we would have if the pandemic didn’t exist.”

Cyrus Jaffery also reinforced that technology is the reason he can take on 60,000 home and auto leads – which is exactly what the firm did in 2023 – all without having to hire 75 new insurance agents to tackle the quoting piece.

“It has saved our organization millions in payroll and taxes,” he said.

The agency has also uniquely tied its business performance to its community involvement; its donates to four different organizations every time it gets a lead.

“We love helping nonprofits and causes that matter to us,” he added. “Insurance gives us an ability to give back to the community and we are so proud of that.”

For instance, Cyrus Jaffery serves on the board for Ava’s Army, which fights pediatric cancer. Last year alone, the company raised $8,000 for the nonprofit.

Additionally, the agency helps Afghans who are new to the area with getting settled into their new lives and supports park cleanups on a monthly basis as a team.

Going forward, in addition to the white labeling of its tech platform, the company is tackling embedded insurance – a reference to its tech being embedded with mortgage and real estate companies across the country.

“We are super-excited to give back to the industry that has given us so much,” Cyrus Jaffery said. “Other than the tech side, we are working on [credit union service organizations] across the country to help open up insurance agencies for credit unions as well.”

Retirement saving plans have long been part of big companies’ benefits packages and today are par for the course as medium and smaller businesses seek to remain competitive in the ongoing battle for talent.

“I think it’s becoming really a standard benefit in an employee benefits package anymore, regardless of company size,” said Andrew Hunt, partner with Hiley Hunt Wealth Management. “It’s such a hot job market and workers have come to expect retirement savings options.”

In an HR Digest survey, about 75% of employees said they expect employers to provide better retirement benefit pension plans and 60% of people would instead opt for a job with lower pay but excellent retirement benefits. Moreover, just under one

in four respondents reported turning down a job offer because the retirement package was lacking.

But while the need and desire for offering retirement plans are clear, small companies should nonetheless proceed with due diligence to select the right plan.

“With unemployment levels low and competition for human resources as challenging as ever, offering a strong benefits plan is critical for small businesses to attract and retain talent,” said Ross Polking, partner and lead advisor- business development, Foster Group. “The challenge, unfortunately, is that group retirement plans can be administratively challenging and costprohibitive to small employers.

“Varying forms of retirement plans exist with a range of

savings limitations and filing complexities. What works best for one business may not for another. It all depends on their goals and financial means.”

The Right Plan

Some of the initial questions a business owner should ask when embarking on offering a retirement plan revolve around having a clear picture of the outcome.

“The first thing a small business owner needs to do is establish goals for what they want the retirement plan to accomplish,” said Chris Wagner, director of retirement plan services, principal, Lutz. “These goals will be the primary driver for setting up the right retirement plan for their business and choosing the right providers. What level of responsibility do I want to maintain as the business owner and what responsibilities do I want to delegate to professionals? What specifically will the business owner be responsible for?”

Hunt added that it’s also a good idea to ask employees for their input, to help ensure the plan is widely adopted once purchased

and implemented. In this way, companies can help ensure the time and money invested in setting up a plan is well spent.

“These plans aren’t cheap,” he said. “The worst thing a company can do is to go spend all the money to set up one of these plans and then nobody participates because it doesn’t match up with what the employees want. Talk with employees – especially what I would call your key stakeholders – to make sure that the plan you’re designing meets with what they’re hoping for.

“At the end of the day, the objective is to have employees allocate to the plan. That’s to everybody’s benefit. But if the plan doesn’t match up with what they want then there’s no point. You just wasted a bunch of time, effort and money.”

Educate Employees

Wagner said another benefit of talking to employees about plan options is to help employees be more informed about how to grow their money. Depending on the plan selected, workers

can be as hands-on or as hands-off as they choose.

“Most 401(k) plans are participant-directed,” he said.

“Employees are provided with a list of investment options selected by the company or adviser. Employees can choose how their money is managed from this list of investment options, which typically includes target date funds, risk-based portfolios and a diversified mix of mutual funds.

“Many vendors are also making managed accounts available

to employees who would like to have their money managed for them. In this case, the employee may answer a series of questions and the managed account service will build an investment allocation for the employee and adjust as needed.”

Retirement plan products aren’t particularly difficult to find, especially when dealing with a reputable service provider. However, the level of administrative and operational complexity associated with these plans can vary depending on which type

of vehicle a business owner chooses. From sorting through the myriad of plan choices to introducing the plan to employees, even a relatively straightforward plan such as a 401(k) can take up to two months to set up, Wagner said.

“Things for a small business owner to consider: How much do I want to contribute to the plan? Does the company have highly compensated employees that want to contribute to the plan? Is the company going to make contributions to employees’ accounts? Are there specific employees we are trying to reward?” he said.

changes in federal law continue to make things incrementally easier for business owners to do so.

“A recent law that was passed called SECURE Act 2.0 is really interesting,” Hunt said. “For years and years and years, employees have had the option in their 401(k) plan to make their contributions to a Roth 401(k). But by statute, the employer’s matching program had to go into a traditional portion.

“What the employees ended up with was they’d have the Roth balance and then their employer match contribution ended up in a traditional balance. Now, under the new law that just came out this year, employers can make their contributions to the Roth as well. It’s a huge benefit for those who find themselves in lower tax brackets.”

The new law could offer a win-win for the employee and employer.

“The new tax credits associated with the passing of SECURE Act 2.0 will provide an additional incentive for small businesses

to offer retirement plans for their employees,” added Wagner. “Small businesses can qualify for tax credits up to $5,000 each year for three years to pay for administrative costs.

“In addition, a tax credit is now available to small businesses who establish a retirement plan and make contributions on behalf of their employees. The credit is a percentage of the employer’s contribution up to $1,000 per eligible employee.”

find when setting up such a plan. Employee retirement plans must meet strict compliance guidelines under ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974) law through the U.S. Department of Labor to ensure the funds are being managed properly and those overseeing the program at the company level must understand these expectations.

“Plan sponsors serve as fiduciaries, thus taking on significant liability in offering a retirement plan,” Polking said. “Critical in this is hiring the appropriate partners to serve in varying roles such as the investment adviser, record-keeper, custodian, third-party administrator, etc. These entities must be trusted partners who help alleviate and/or share in the fiduciary duties of the employer.

“When audited, if costs are found to be too high, investment options limited or plan provisions restricted, significant penalties await the offender. Therefore, employers must fully appreciate the role and responsibility of being a fiduciary.”

Getting Buy-in

Participation in a plan can be built-in, as federal law permits employees to be auto-enrolled in a retirement plan once they qualify, with the option of opting out. Wagner said this feature is highly effective in getting workers to invest in their future.

“Including an auto-enroll feature in the plan design is the single plan feature that has the most meaningful impact on employee participation,” he said. “It is common for plans with auto-

enrollment to have participation rates above 90%. Auto-enrollment has been so successful that companies who start a new retirement plan will be required to have auto-enroll as a feature beginning in 2025. This was a provision in SECURE Act 2.0.”

At the same time, companies should also take steps to educate employees on the “why” behind retirement savings to move from a posture of passive participation to understanding and taking ownership of one’s money.

“The more informed employees are of the retirement plan offering, the more likely they are to participate,” Polking said. “Too often employees are presumed to understand how retirement plans work and just trust their money is working for them, when in fact they have no idea where their money is going. The servicing providers, particularly the investment adviser, should ideally provide in-person education and recurring meetings with participants to help them best leverage the plan.”

Investing such time and effort after installing the retirement plan benefit is as crucial to the ongoing success of the plan as the initial selection of the benefit itself, Hunt said.

“One big ‘don’t’ is don’t just set it and forget it,” he said. “As a 401(k) plan provider, you have a fiduciary duty to the plan’s participants. This means that you have a duty to make sure that the plan is structured properly, that the investment menu is broadly diversified and the funds you’re using are the most

efficient, the most cost-effective and the most diverse.

“But you also have the responsibility in employee education, giving them lots of opportunities to learn and ask questions or to get in front of them regularly and telling them about the power of compound interest, what Albert Einstein called the eighth wonder of the world. You really need to have this be part of your playbook.”

Strengthening Investment THROUGH GLOBALIZATION

International markets in broad terms have underperformed the U.S. markets in eight out of the last ten years. Recent geopolitical issues and the COVID crisis have sparked debates about the decline of globalization. It would be easy for an investor to look inward with their investments rather than look outside our borders. Despite the urge to focus solely on U.S. investments, doing this may not be the best course of action.

The Potential Benefits of Globalizing

Globalizing portfolios and incorporating more and diverse asset classes can reduce overall risk, diversify income streams, and provide more growth opportunities. As global capital markets have evolved and matured, the access and liquidity to them has greatly improved. As a global investor, we need to carefully consider an extensive set of available investment choices to construct portfolios that fully address financial needs and requirements. Limiting investment choices to a select few places where companies are domiciled can hinder the path towards an optimal portfolio. At the security level, one reason to globalize portfolios is the opportunity set for investors greatly expands across all asset classes. Additionally, the proliferation of investment products such as individual country and regional ETFs (exchange traded funds) and international fund managers improve the ability to customize international exposure. Exclusionary type vehicles are also available. For instance, if an investor is nervous about investing in China, there are ETFs that have emerging market ex-China exposure.

Globalizing portfolios is a long-term investment decision. However, there are some interesting tactical benefits to looking at international markets today. At year end, international stocks were trading at a wide discount on price to earnings ratio to U.S. stocks. In fact, the MSCI AC World EX-U.S. Index trades at a 28% discount to the S&P 500.1 Additionally, this same index indicates a dividend yield that is 1.6% higher than the S&P 500.2 Lastly many of the broadbased international indices are more diversified than the S&P 500 where the top 5 names represent 25% of the index.

Is the Globalization Era Dead?

The Russia-Ukraine war along with rising tensions between the U.S, Taiwan, and China have raised concerns about the end of globalization. The post COVID inward focus on production of goods domestically also dealt a blow to globalization. However, what we cannot ignore is that we are all global consumers of goods and information. Through technological innovation and the increased use of social

media, individuals gain rapid access to information about the world around them. In managing wealth for clients, we receive many questions equally balanced of how domestic and international events impact their portfolio. Understanding how these global events affect your investment portfolio and additionally having solutions to take advantage of potential opportunities across the globe is a key benefit of managing wealth in a global context.

How Should We Invest?

There is an inherent home bias that investors across the globe employ. A home country bias is the tendency to invest more money in your home country than internationally. Having some home country bias may be warranted but our belief is international exposure should be present. Exposure should not just be concentrated in one asset class like equities. Investors may want to consider globalizing their fixed income investments as well as their real assets. Currency exposure also plays a big factor in international returns and knowing whether you remain hedged or unhedged on a dollar basis can have a large impact on the portfolio.

It is important to know how you are exposed internationally, whether you are managing the investments yourself or using an advisor. Though the drumbeat may be loud to have more and more of your investments domiciled in the U.S., having some international investments may enhance your returns and lower your risk, which is the goal of sound portfolio construction.

Deloitte Strengthens Commitment to Omaha

CELEBRATES OPENING OF NEW OFFICE IN CAPITOL DISTRICT

On April 26, a diverse group of Omaha business and community leaders joined Deloitte’s current and past Omaha leadership teams to celebrate the official opening of Deloitte’s new office in the heart of the city center.

Daniel Kinsella, Deloitte & Touche LLP, presided over the spirited ribbon-cutting ceremony. He was joined by Grant Gregory, one of the inaugural leaders of Deloitte’s Omaha office; Carmen Tapio, board chair for the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce; and Tom Warren, chief of staff to Mayor Jean Stothert. A host of other leaders from a broad crosssection of corporations, nonprofits, and civic organizations, among others, also attended the event.

A Connector for the Community

“Today is not about Deloitte; it’s about the community,” said Kinsella. “It’s not a coincidence that we have such a wide spectrum of individuals with us today. Our relationships with such a wide range of organizations allow Deloitte to help further the important work our community does together.”

Deloitte is the first professional services organization to set up shop in the revitalized city center. The modern workspace designed to fuse talent, technology, and innovation is the fulfillment of Deloitte’s Omaha office leadership vision of serving the community from the Capitol District, Omaha’s epicenter of business, talent, and diversity. With more than 200 professionals, the new Deloitte office will serve as an important anchor for the downtown business community, situated between the new Kiewit Luminarium serving as its education, science, and technology hub and the Steelhouse, Omaha’s newest entertainment venue.

Since opening its first Omaha office in the 1950s, Deloitte has been committed to serving the Omaha community. Today, Deloitte has collaborations with many higher education institutions in the region, and its professionals serve on more than 100 local nonprofit and civic boards. In his prepared remarks, Kinsella emphasized how the new office would serve as a base for Deloitte’s ongoing commitment to enriching the Omaha community, providing lasting value through local collaborations and making a positive impact in the Omaha region.

Making an Impact that Matters

Deloitte’s community focus is driven by its purpose: to make an impact that matters by creating trust and confidence in a more equitable society. One way Deloitte has fulfilled this purpose both nationally and regionally in Omaha is through its historical commitment to education and workforce development.

Kinsella believes that Omaha is an important nexus and an alternative to larger business centers. As a hub of the “Silicon Prairie” tech sector, Omaha merges technology with traditional industries, the military, education, and not-for-profit organizations. “The success of the United States and really the modern world depends on diverse decentralized business centers such as Omaha’s and the unique perspectives they bring,” he said.

Grant Gregory added: “I’m proud to be a part of Deloitte’s rich history of supporting the Omaha region, which plays a vital role in our nation’s defense, information technology, and financial services industries. It’s an honor to be here to celebrate Deloitte’s ongoing commitment to Omaha and the great state of Nebraska.”

Small business owners are facing a rapidly changing world. Staffing shortages, higher loan interest rates, cash flow deficiencies and fraudsters can threaten a company’s health, leading them to turn to their bankers for help.

Labor Shortage and Inflation

At Equitable Bank, Community Bank President Doug Nodgaard noted how many of the bank’s small business clients have struggled to compete for talent.

“Sometimes small businesses can’t offer as good of employee benefits such as 401(k)’s and good health insurance, [so] there is a lot of turnover and time and money spent on training new employees,” he said.

Patrick Zach, vice president of commercial lending at Dundee Bank said that interest rates on loans and some deposit accounts have increased over the past year.

“Some business owners may elect to hold off on expanding their business or take on a new project due to the elevated interest rates,” Zach said. “Others are electing to sit on some of their cash, which is generating them some interest income in a money market account or a certificate of deposit.”

The main financial trend impacting all small businesses is pressure from inflation, according to Jeff Richardson, associate vice president and business banker at Centris Federal Credit Union. Specific challenges may vary from industry to industry, but costs across the board have made doing business more expensive.

Ultimately community banks are built on relationships.

“This also includes starting a new business,” he said. “Business owners have been required to be nimble and adjust their business plans to the new reality, which is strategically managing overhead expenses and ‘go forward’ pricing strategies.”

According to Shane Kalin, vice president and commercial banker at Northwest Bank, disruption and unpredictability in the supply chain and the difficulty of securing adequate labor are two trends that most commonly affect small businesses.

“We have heard from multiple businesses that since 2020, they have seen rapid price changes from their suppliers,” he said. “In previous years, they might have seen two price changes in a year from suppliers. They are now seeing price changes monthly, bi-weekly, or even more rapidly.”

Along with the rapid price changes, customers are finding it difficult to get timely delivery of needed supplies. These delays

along with the variability in the price of product is putting strain on working capital cycles as well as pressure to correctly price their products and services to make a reasonable profit.

“We have heard from many small businesses that they are staffed below their desired level and that they have put significant time and effort into hiring additional staff with little to no results to show for it,” Kalin said. “Some of our customers have stated that even a continued increase to their offering wage has not yielded additional candidates. With an inability to staff to their desired levels, some companies are having to turn down work, reduce hours they operate, or attempt to produce equivalent amounts with less labor.”

Fraud prevention is extremely important today. One of the fastest-growing threats to a company is business email compromise (BEC). This occurs when scammers use stolen credentials such as emails to impersonate a known employee, gaining trust to provide false payment information or a change in payment information.

Fraud prevention tools top the list of essential small banking needs, said Lindsay Borgeson, chief deposit officer at Core Bank.

“The best safeguard to prevent fraud is you and your employees,” she said. “With training, recognizing signs of suspicious activity can help prevent your funds from getting into the wrong hands.”

She advised firms to look for possible gaps that could open the business to risks of internal fraud, corporate account takeover, and business email compromise.

“Ask your bank what they can do to protect the business from these ever-evolving threats,” she said. “Outgoing and incoming payments can be made more efficiently through the use of banking tools. Seek solutions to expedite your cash flow cycle. Ensure excess balances are working for you, whether via earnings credit

to offset bank fees or a sweep to an interest-bearing account.”

Nodgaard said small businesses should develop a good relationship with their banker.

“If you can’t call your bank and get a quick answer, then you as the business owner aren’t as efficient or effective,” he said.

Zach said small business owners will request services that fit their company’s needs, including small business loan options, an operating line of credit, an equipment loan, and/or a loan to purchase a property. Supplemental services for business deposit accounts include online and mobile banking, ACH services and remote check depositing.

“At the end of the day, business owners want to work with individuals who understand the needs of their business,” Zach said.

For businesses in all industries, it is essential to find a financial institution that can deliver products and services which will protect, integrate, and create efficiencies—not hurdles—for the business, Richardson said.

“Work with that banker to understand their current and future lending and deposit needs for the business,” he said. “This should be a process they should revisit frequently with their banker as

“In Nebraska we are fortunate to enjoy a diverse and healthy economy,” Zach said. “Community banks in Nebraska remain well capitalized and for the most part do not have any exposure to some of the more volatile industries, such as cryptocurrencies.”

“I believe these recent occurrences give community financial institutions the opportunity to highlight their current financial strength and stability in the markets they serve,” Richardson said.

Kalin believes that the banking community in the Midwest is less susceptible to the issues that caused the recent bank collapses.

“For the most part, the customer base of Midwest banks is wide-ranging and in diverse industries,” he said. “Midwest banks have a higher percentage of FDIC insured deposits of their total deposit base than some of the banks that recently failed.”

The biggest effect from bank collapses, he believes, is a customer move to evaluate their FDIC insurance coverage and a determination on good risk mitigation plans for any of their funds

that aren’t covered by FDIC insurance.

“I believe we could see some bank regulation change based on the recent bank failures, but I don’t believe that is going to be a difficult hurdle for Midwest banks to adapt to,” Kalin said. “I have a great deal of confidence in the quality of operation of individual institutions and quality of banking overall that we have within our area.”

Although the possibility of increased regulation may be a concern for community banks, they are well-positioned to weather any storm, according to Borgeson. She suggested that business owners call their bankers and ask what they may have in place to provide additional coverage. For instance, do they offer products that can fully insure funds over the FDIC-insured limit?

“Ultimately community banks are built on relationships and emphasize supporting the businesses in the communities they serve which truly is the fabric of a thriving economy,” Borgeson said.

WHAT ELSE IS possible?

Welcome, 2023! I love the New Year. New beginnings, new adventures, new possibilities, new choices. A blank canvas for us to perhaps choose something different and create another masterpiece along the journey of our lives.

As I look back over the past 30-plus years I’ve been in the publishing/media business, I realize where I am today is largely because of the choices I have made. Some of them created more ease and more joy in my life and business, and some of them did not.

We are all a work in progress and constantly evolving. There are hundreds, thousands—make that millions—of choices we can make at any given time.

We all are making choices. Every moment in every day there are choices to make. We are choosing what we wear, what we eat, what we do, who we do it with, where we work, how we nurture our bodies or how we don’t. We choose happiness and joy and we also choose sadness and struggle.

What I love about CHOICE is that you always have a CHOICE. If you choose something and it doesn’t work out or you change your mind, you can choose again. When I hear myself saying, “I have no choice,” that is a choice. Gary Douglas, founder of Access Consciousness, encourages us to choose in 10-second increments. There is no right or wrong choice, good or bad choice. There is just CHOICE.

Ask yourself, “If I choose (fill in the blank), what will my life be like in a year, five years, ten years? (Or perhaps, in keeping with the above admonition, in the next 10 seconds?) Will this choice create more in my life or less?”

Only you can answer that question. My life continues to change by asking such questions. What are you choosing in 2023? And remember: If it isn’t working out or feeling light—choose again!

What else is possible (in the next 10 seconds, 10 minutes, months, years?) That begins with your next CHOICE!

What else is possible? ~ ANDEE

Charitable IRA Rollovers

FOUR THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

A Charitable IRA Rollover, also known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), is a distribution from an IRA to a qualified charity. The donor must be 70½ or older to make a QCD. A QCD is not taxed, nor is it included in the donor’s taxable income.

This tax planning technique not only helps nonprofit organizations who receive the funds but can also lower the donor’s adjusted gross income while also reducing the required minimum distributions (RMD) that can increase the donor’s income (for those who are required to take an RMD).

Below are fast facts to help you and your clients get the most out of this tax-savvy way to donate IRA assets to charity.

1. Name the charitable recipient

The QCD must go directly from the IRA account to a qualified charity, like certain funds at the Omaha Community Foundation. Your client cannot receive the funds directly from the IRA and then make the donation directly.

2. Deferred income

While donors do not receive a charitable income tax deduction for taking a

QCD, QCDs are excluded from the donor’s taxable income and count toward the donor’s RMD for those who are required to take RMDs.

3. Giving More

A donor does not need to itemize deductions on their tax return to take advantage of a QCD. QCDs operate separately from the percentage rules that limit the tax benefits of individuals who are charitably giving. So, if your clients are inclined to give more than the standard deduction, a QCD is a great option. This strategy may provide greater tax savings than a cash donation by lowering the donor’s adjusted gross income.

4. How the Omaha Community Foundation can help

The simplest way to make a Qualified Charitable Distribution from an IRA is to name a qualified fund at the Omaha Community Foundation as the nonprofit recipient, and we can take it from there. For example, if a donor wants to donate $100,000 annually from their IRA but does not want to distribute it to the nonprofit recipient all at once, or if the donor wants to give different amounts to multiple nonprofits, a fund at the Community Foundation can be structured to accomplish these objectives.

Please contact OCF’s Donor Services team at 402-342-3458 or giving@ omahafoundation.org if you have questions about how your clients can use their IRAs to support their favorite charitable causes.

Disclaimer: This article provides an overview of the possible tax advantages of donating various types of assets and is not intended to provide tax or legal guidance. The Omaha Community Foundation recommends discussing these strategies with an accountant, financial advisor, or attorney.

URBAN CORE DEVELOPMENT REINVIGORATES SMALL BUSINESSES

Small businesses are the heartbeat of America. In Lincoln specifically, business owners are continuing to find ways to welcome people into their stores and restaurants, encouraging them to shop local and support Nebraska’s economy.

The urban core of Lincoln is changing. What was once mainly a business hub, is slowly transforming into an urban neighborhood that people want to live and work in.

“Downtown is experiencing massive growth in its residential population, which has grown from 3,000 to a potential 10,000 residents after planned construction,” said Todd Ogden, president and CEO of the Downtown Lincoln Association. “Due to the changing nature of our urban core, our residents and patrons continue to look for more experiential and residential services. We are seeing a trend of businesses that are adding activities to create a destination for people to want to be a part of.”

Overcoming Challenges

The last few years took a toll on small businesses everywhere, and while Lincoln businesses are bouncing back, there are still challenges.

Barb Ballard, owner of From Nebraska Gift Shop, noted that the labor shortage has impacted her business.

“Like many other local businesses, we find that employees, especially part-time employees are increasingly harder to find. Hours usually covered by part-timers now have to be worked by full-timers that have altered start times to work evening and weekend hours.”

Matel Rokke, owner of Tsuru, said that her experience has been similar.

“Finding people that really fit your brand can also be a difficult task when there are not as many people looking for work,” she said. “We have found offering competitive wages and bonuses is a huge asset.”

Inflation and rising costs have also been difficult to navigate.

“The trend I am continuing to see again and again is just the continued increase in the cost of doing business at every step,” shared Alicia Reisinger, founder and creative director for Wax Buffalo Pure Soy Candles. “From the products we use to shipping

these products to us, the increase is felt across the entire industry (and frankly not just ours).”

“Right now, I would say inflation is a huge factor,” said Peggy Gomez, owner of Gomez Art Supply. “The prices of the materials I purchase have and continue to go up. I cannot keep raising my prices, so on many items, I am not getting my usual keystone markup.”

Continuing to Thrive

Despite challenges that are unique to this time in history, Lincoln businesses are thankful for the support that locals provide.

“Nebraskans are incredibly loyal, and we’ve seen an increase in customers choosing to send local items to family and friends,” Ballard said. “We doubled our square footage during COVID. We had plans to expand into a space vacated by another retailer next door before the pandemic and with faith, we continued those plans.”

Rokke said that steady growth is on the horizon for her small business.

“Lincoln is a wonderful community with a lot of pride in shopping small and supporting local businesses,” she said. “Being surrounded by other local, woman-owned businesses is a great place to be. We have continued to see yearly growth and try to staff accordingly. I’ve always loved Lincoln, but more specifically, our location downtown. We are surrounded by local businesses that really make the town a unique and fun place to live. Nothing around here is cookie-cutter…I hope Lincoln continues to support the small businesses that make this town what it is.”

Gomez, who will celebrate 20 years of being in business this summer, said that her location in the Parrish Building has been great. She attributed the supportive business environment in Lincoln as a factor. She often hosts events with her business neighbors and the Downtown Lincoln Association has also shown significant support.

After acquiring the Little King franchise operation in 2021, Lockwood Development is announcing that the firm’s first Omaha Little King store opened to the public on November 1, with a Grand Opening featuring the Creighton Volleyball team scheduled for Saturday, November 5. The store, located at 8602 West Dodge Road, represents a step forward for both the brand and its footprint in the Omaha area. “Our new store is very close to where the very first Little King store was located when it opened in 1969,” said Chip James, president and CEO of Lockwood Development. “That’s no coincidence. We’re truly inspired by the roots of this historic franchise, and we look forward to carrying that spirit forward to loyal Little King customers, as well as a new generation of Omaha residents.” The 1500-square-foot store combines modern design and an inviting dining area with classic Little King branding and artwork. Customers can expect to order from Little King’s beloved menu featuring subs and sandwiches made with bread baked in store and fresh-sliced meat, as well as soups and desserts, while taking advantage of a variety of conveniences, including a drive-thru. Day to day operations at the 86th and Dodge location, as well as the operation of Lockwood Development’s subsequent stores, wil be overseen by Mark Edwards, an Omaha native who grew up in the fast-food business. “It’s an honor to merge the industry I’m passionate about with a brand that means a great deal to me and so many families in Omaha,” said Edwards. “Little King has more than 50 years of rich history in our area, and now we get the opportunity to move it forward, modernize it, and highlight the very best of what it has to offer.” The new store is the first in a series of new locations James, Edwards, and the team at Lockwood Development plan to open in Omaha and Lincoln. About Little King Founded in Omaha in 1969 by Sid Wertheim, Little King Deli & Subs is known for its deli-style sub sandwiches, made with bread baked fresh on site and meat sliced to order. URBAN CORE DEVELOPMENT REINVIGORATES SMALL BUSINESSES

The close-knit nature of Nebraskans is an incredible asset for small business owners in Lincoln, and it’s something that many of them are banking on for their continued success.

“‘Nebraska Nice’ is a real thing and the sense of community that comes with that sentiment is palpable,” explained Reisinger. “People in Nebraska, and even more specifically in Lincoln, genuinely want to see each other succeed and we will do what we

can to support and lift each other up.

“But we’re also a culture that knows what it means to hustle and work hard and we’re not afraid to dig in and get a little dirty while doing it! I truly believe our community is committed to promoting and supporting small businesses, entrepreneurship, and economic growth. Whether that means support from the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, or the Downtown Lincoln Association, or the humans who kindly support and love on us by shopping locally…overall, I think Lincoln is a great place for small businesses to thrive and grow.”

Ogden encourages locals to remain committed to shopping locally.

“As a community, we need to continue to find ways to support our small businesses, as they are the secret ingredient in making our city special,” he said.
