Season of Gratitude

AND BEYOND ...

Dear Readers,

As we begin the 2022 holiday season, I look back over this past year with gratitude. There have certainly been challenges for our small and local businesses, but there has also been a generosity of spirit that makes me proud to do business here and call this community my home.

In each issue of Midlands Business Journal you will find unique, local business news and events. This issue is no different.

Our cover story: I had the opportunity to attend the inaugural Omaha Gratitude Summit executive breakfast session on October 26. The visionary for this event was Janyne Peek Emsick. As you will read on the pages ahead, Janyne had a vision of bringing together community leaders, local business executives and their team members for a day-long summit on gratitude. Before she could get the momentum required, the pandemic hit and her plans were put on hold indefinitely. But Janyne is one lady who will forge ahead and bring a vision to fruition when the time is right.

I left the breakfast with a much better understanding of how a daily practice of gratitude and the science behind it can dramatically impact a workplace, the managers, team members, leaders, vendors and family members of those associated with the company. While listening to featured speakers Dr. Robert A. Emmons from the University of California, Davis, a leading expert on gratitude; and Dr. Jeff Snell, Director of Psychology Services at QLI, it all made sense. Leading from a grateful heart and working in an environment with gratitude is a game-changer. There were so many takeaways, and we are excited to share some of those with you from Summit attendees on page 10.

Gratitude and a generosity of spirit often go hand in hand. It is only fitting that we included our annual Giving Guide & Event Book in this issue. This publication was created back in 2005 to help connect businesses and individuals to area nonprofits. I encourage you to use this guide during the holiday season and throughout 2023. And don’t forget Giving Tuesday on November 29.

I am grateful for our business community that gives back financially, invites employees to volunteer, and provides much-needed resources and services to our nonprofit community and those in need. As we feature stories throughout the year, we would love to hear from you. Tell us about your giving culture, tell us about your company’s philanthropic projects, tell us about a charity fundraiser hosted by your business. We want to know! These stories inspire and create ripple effects across our community.

All of us at Midlands Business Journal wish you a happy, healthy and safe holiday season.

With gratitude & joy,

- Andrea “ANDEE” Hoig andee@mbj.com

THE ART OF thanks

PEEK EMSICK SHARES VISION BEHIND OMAHA GRATITUDE SUMMIT

The inaugural Omaha Gratitude Summit may have just taken place Oct. 26 at the Scott Conference Center , said founder Janyne Peek Emsick, Ph.D., but the event was actually a long time coming.

“In January of 2020, I had what I call an ‘if you build it, they will come’ moment coming out of contemplative prayer one morning,” Peek Emsick said. “I very clearly kind of heard, ‘Janyne, create a gratitude summit and create an opportunity for folks in this community — this really generous community — to learn about the science and practice of gratitude, and to actually practice it.’”

Peek Emsick, also the CEO and an executive coach for YourExecutiveCoach.com, was studying gratitude at the time and was also intrigued by the concept of neuroplasticity introduced to her by Patricia Kearns. Kearns, a regular speaker for the Change Leadership course Peek Emsick taught at Creighton University, is CEO of Omaha-based QLI, a world-class rehabilitation center.

“I had learned a little bit about [neuroplasticity] from Pat, and so when this gratitude summit idea popped, she was one of the first

people that I went to and said, ‘What do you think?’ She said, ‘I love it,’” Peek Emsick said. “She actually introduced me to their neuropsychologist. And we booked the Scott Center. We had a date set. It was going to be called Thanksgiving in July.”

Before Thanksgiving in July could be fully fleshed out, however, the COVID-19 pandemic emerged. In-person gathering was curtailed, but planning for a summit emphasizing both the practice and science of gratitude continued to move forward. Peek Emsick ultimately booked a leading expert on gratitude, Dr. Robert A. Emmons of the University of California, Davis, to speak at what became October 2022’s Omaha Gratitude Summit. QLI’s Director of Psychology Services, Dr. Jeff Snell, was also secured as a featured speaker.

“Since my area of interest is the brain, and how its anatomy and functioning relates to our thoughts, emotions and behaviors, I was very interested to learn more for myself about the neurology of gratitude. I was intrigued to learn of the many positive benefits — not just emotionally, but physically as well — are associated with

the regular practice of gratitude,” Snell said.

“Because of my earlier experiences of remote presentations with Janyne on this and related topics, I was happy to be invited to speak on this topic at the Gratitude Summit, and to have the opportunity to hear Dr. Emmons — a world leader on the topic of gratitude — firsthand.”

Snell said that, like all aspects of learning, our brain changes as we present it with new information and new routines.

“That physiological adaptation, which reflects the building and strengthening of neural networks, is ‘neuroplasticity’ — the physiological changes that underlie the ability of the brain to become more efficient at a task that we perform on a regular basis,” he explained. “With respect to the practice of gratitude, we can not only shape our perceptions to be more inclusive of positive possibilities, but we can also alter our brain/body physiology in positive ways.”

Reductions in stress and depression are associated with the purposeful practice of gratitude, Snell said, and studies have demonstrated a reduction of stress hormone cortisol in individuals who regularly practice gratitude. The practice of gratitude is also associated with improved physical and emotional functioning, including boosting the immune system.

“The practice of gratitude tends to make people happier, less depressed, less anxious and more resilient. It is also a process that involves relationships; as we benefit from the practice of gratitude, we also share those experiences with others,” Snell said. “The bottom line is that the practice of gratitude is cheap, always available to us, and provides tremendous benefits not just to ourselves but also those around us. It positively impacts the way in which our brain processes information, predicts outcomes, and produces ‘automatic’ emotional routines that elevate our general mood and outlook. And all it takes is conscious practice; doing something that makes us feel good.”

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska stepped up early on as the inaugural Gratitude Summit’s presenting sponsor.

“Cultivating a spirit of gratitude and recognizing the impact that mindset has in the workplace is so important,” said Susan Courtney, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska’s executive vice president of operations and clinical effectiveness. “Collectively, we’ve all been through an unprecedented and difficult time with the pandemic. During an experience like that, with so much bad news coming at us on a daily basis, it would be easy to lose hope and focus on what was lost.

“When we focus on gratitude, however, we can make peace with the past, appreciate the blessings we have and lean more into

GRATITUDE PROMOTES PSYCHOLOGICAL SECURITY AND SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE

Gratitude enables:

1. Feeling safe to express ideas, identify and voice problems and have contradictory opinions.

2. Risk taking, which fuels innovation, creativity and continuous improvement.

3. Asking for help, promoting teamwork, collaboration and delegation.

The statistics:

• 93% of people agree that grateful bosses are more likely to succeed

• 88% of people say that expressing gratitude to colleagues makes them feel happier and more fulfilled

• In one study from Harvard University and Wharton, receiving a “thank you” from a supervisor boosted productivity by more than 50%.

• On a given day, only 10% of people say “thank you” to colleagues — and 60% of people report that they never or very rarely express gratitude at work

how we can help others.”

On a corporate level, Courtney said gratitude aligns with her organization’s values, something many Gratitude Summit attendees could relate to.

“We are so grateful to be part of our members’ health journeys and to be there for them when they need us,” she said. “Internally, with our own employees, gratitude plays a key role in what we call our ‘One Team’ mindset. We know we can count on one another and lean on one another when things get tough. In fact, recipients of our annual ‘One Team’ awards — employees who go

above and beyond — are nominated by their coworkers. That’s gratitude in action.”

The pandemic-necessitated delay for the summit’s launch date turned out to work in Peek Emsick’s favor, even allowing the concept to “simmer.”

When 2022 arrived, Peek Emsick said it was a perfect time to reflect on the good things in life, such as the relationships we have.

“It sure did seem like this is a great time to kind of draw a line in the sand and focus on what makes us grateful coming out of this place of our global ‘hard,’” she said.

Peek Emsick said the first Gratitude Summit lived up to her expectations, and then some. She’s already planning the next event.

“From the C suite to college students, we really had a beautiful range of participants,” she said. “Next year we’re going to focus on the relationship between gratitude and forgiveness, their impact on breaking down silos in our organizations and relationships, breaking down barriers in our organization and our relationship.”

Peek Emsick also said that in a season that begins with a holiday earmarked for giving thanks, she’s — fittingly — grateful

GRATITUDE IMPROVES BOTH PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH

• Keeping a gratitude diary for two weeks produced sustained reductions in perceived stress (28%) and depression (16%) in health care practitioners

• Dietary fat intake is reduced by as much as 25% when people keep a gratitude journal

• Gratitude is related to 23% lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol

• Writing a letter of gratitude reduced feelings of hopelessness in 88% of suicidal inpatients and increased levels of optimism in 94% of them

GRATITUDE MAKES OUR COMMUNITY AND ORGANIZATIONS BETTER

for how everything transpired.

“One of Robert Emmons’s quotes that I really like, because it defines kind of the core of gratitude, is ‘Grateful living is only possible when we realize that other people and agents do things for us that we cannot do for ourselves.’ So, it’s recognizing someone, something outside of us, that has done something for us that we can’t do on our own; that’s kind of that lens that you bring to it … not because it’s something you did, but because of something that happened outside of yourself. Gratitude follows up with that awareness,” she said.

“A gratitude summit serves as a catalyst for ripples of gratitude that flow through the community. And we do that by coming together to learn about the brain science and the practice of gratitude. And then to be equipped to actually practice this in our day-to-day life, that it is transformational in our personal lives, our organizations and our community.”

The Omaha Gratitude Summit made me realize the impact an expression of gratitude can have on yourself and others. The positive emotions involved with a simple message of gratitude are something everyone should experience. When you show appreciation to one another, you create a culture of positivity and collaboration. I am thankful for attending the event, but even more thankful that my company, American National Bank, showed that it understands the power of gratitude and by sponsoring the Summit, was able to help spread the message.

The Omaha Gratitude Summit was a refreshing reminder of the importance of recognizing and telling the people that have made a positive difference in our lives. The health benefits each of us can receive by focusing on daily positive influences we have in our lives is even more important at this time of concerns with mental health in our society.

JOHNETTA

Being a part of a gratitude-based culture at QLI, I was excited to attend this summit to learn more. One of the biggest takeaways for me was how important gratitude is not only in the workplace and to others in life, but also to yourself. We should be the first to thank and congratulate ourselves! My personal gratitude journal has been the best self-care activity I’ve incorporated this year.

The summit was great! I loved hearing about the science behind gratitude: We have the power to physically improve our heart health and sleep better. Plus, practicing gratitude can improve our mental/emotional health. We can pass on these feel-good feelings to others (who make our lives better), which is a ripple effect.

One take-away I’m sharing with my employees is: “Before you go to sleep each night, think about three things you’re grateful for. How many of those three included a person? Think about how great that person would feel if they knew they made your life better. Tell them tomorrow by writing them a handwritten note - even if you have to use Google for inspiration! (Ex: “What do normal people say when they want to tell someone they’re grateful for them - but like, in a totally cool, non-awkward way?”

AAAAND SEARCH!)

We all underestimate the value our words have, but everyone wants to feel appreciatedeven if we think it would be awkward for them (ahem... mostly us) or if we think they already know how much we appreciate them (chances are, they don’t). Why would we knowingly hold back the opportunity to make someone else’s day! Going forward, the answer is: We don’t want to lose that chance to let them know how grateful we are for having them!

We get the benefit of improved physical and mental health; they get the benefit of feeling appreciated. Win-win! So, do it! SEND THAT LETTER!

And repeat this exercise every night before you fall asleep.”

I enjoyed the Gratitude Summit. It was good to hear from Dr. Emmons, not only about the positive impact that I can have on the lives of others by being intentional with authentic gratitude, but also the impact that living with a gratitude mindset will have on me personally. As we heard, there are lots of misconceptions about gratitude, but it really is a way of seeing through a different lens, especially with all the negative noise and vision blurring activity in our world today. As Dr. Emmons said, “Control your mind, control your world.” I look forward to what’s to come here in Omaha following this inaugural summit.

PHYSICIANSMUTUAL.COM

I was impressed with the research presented by Dr. Robert Emmons correlating the practice of being grateful and a person’s overall well-being. Those results show themselves in better relationships, better health, and a more positive outlook for oneself and others. Coming at gratitude from another angle, he related how a young woman who lost her mother to suicide used gratitude to inspire her sense of empathy for others. The choice to use gratitude in a situation of sadness was revealing. The conclusion that gratefulness is not just a Pollyanna perspective but is based on reality and our choice in how we react to situations added an important perspective. I am grateful for the opportunity to attend the Omaha Gratitude Summit and look forward to the positive ripple this will create in our community.

The OGS was a purpose-filled time to gather together and gain inspiring, compelling, and proven insight on the power of gratitude. Hearing from Dr. Emmons and Dr. Snell was both practical and profound to better understand the impact a life of gratitude can have on mental and physical health. Learning how gratitude is one of the primary ways you can create psychological safety for myself, and others will impact how I lead and interact with co-workers and volunteers. The entire day was filled with tools and practices that could be immediately integrated into teams and both personal and professional settings, it was a well-spent day!

CEO | ONE SOURCE THE BACKGROUND CHECK COMPANY ONESOURCEBACKGROUND.COM

Gratitude is medicine and it does not cost anything to try but can be very expensive and exhausting to not practice. It is quite incredible and backed by research. The concept behind gratitude in the workplace is also something that seems so simple, yet something that is a little lost in today’s culture. I am encouraging all our team members to take time each day to reflect, practice, and grow in their daily gratitude affirmations. What if? What if we could really connect at a deeper level by each taking a few minutes a day to look for and communicate our gratitude? I’m inspired to think about the possibility.

Attendance: 350

Event Summary: On October 26, 2022, Omaha’s inaugural Gratitude Summit was held at the Scott Conference Center. Attended by 350, an executive breakfast, afternoon Gratitude Summit event and evening gratitude workshop for university students introduced participants from the C suite to university students to the science and practice of gratitude.

Global gratitude expert, Dr. Robert A. Emmons of University of California, Davis, presented a summary of three decades of research connecting the power of gratitude with increased organizational effectiveness, productivity, and the psychological safety that fuels trust, innovation and engagement. Neuropsychologist Dr. Jeffrey Snell of QLI shared the brain science of gratitude. Both shared research demonstrating gratitude practices with improved physical and mental health.

Participants received a “Gratitude Toolkit” including a 21-Day gratitude journal, thank-You cards and stamps, Post-its and a pen. During the Gratitude Summit event community thank-you notes were written and by Thanksgiving, nearly 2,000 thankyou cards were to be distributed to community educators, health care workers, first respondents, nonprofit team members, active and veteran military personnel and local and state leaders. Scott Scholars from UNO and Creighton University had the opportunity to integrate gratitude with the ethos of Walter Scott Jr. by engaging in a gratitude exercise: writing a personal thank-you to an individual or organization who had made a difference in their journey, and whom they’d not yet properly thanked.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska served as the inaugural Presenting Sponsor. Additional sponsors include: American National Bank, One Source: the background check company, QLI, Physicians Mutual, YourExecutiveCoach.com, Children’s Hospital & Medical Center, Lueder Construction, Scott Scholars – UNO, Calvert Systems, Beardmore Subaru, Creighton University Heider College of Business, Suzanne and Walter Scott Foundation, CLAAS and MBJ | Metro Magazine.

Driving Philanthropy

LOCAL LEADERS ARE READY FOR GIVING TUESDAY

Giving Tuesday, our region’s largest annual giving celebration, is on Nov. 29, 2022. To boost its impact, SHARE Omaha and SHARE Iowa are encouraging local leaders to take philanthropy even further.

Several local companies have events planned for Giving Tuesday, including donation matches, community drives and volunteer opportunities.

Community-minded investment and development company City+Ventures is committed to enhancing and promoting growth in Omaha. To strengthen Giving Tuesday participation, the company is matching $50 employee donations.

“Growing communities is what we’re all about,” said Brittany Zeoli at City+Ventures. “Giving Tuesday is an opportunity for our employees and company to support the Omaha community.”

Fusion Medical Staffing is hosting an employee blood drive on Giving Tuesday, led by Fusion’s Be the Change Committee, to help address blood shortages.

“Fusion gives us the opportunity to make an impact on the causes we’re passionate about,” said Holly Fenn, a member of the committee. “There’s a severe need for blood all across the country right now, so I knew hosting a drive would be a great way to give employees a chance to help out. It’s amazing to be able to live out our core purpose of ensuring everyone we touch has a better life.”

Erin Van Zee, APR, communications director at RDG Planning & Design, is working to expand Giving Tuesday into a “Giving Week” at the company by organizing daily opportunities for colleagues to come together in support of important causes and nonprofits. Activities throughout the week will include staff presentations to raise awareness about local organizations and dedicated times for people to create or collect items to support those in need.

“Community is a core tenet of who we are at RDG, both as a business and as individuals, and I’m

honored to be a part of encouraging participation in Giving Tuesday,” Van Zee said. “Whether through volunteering with nonprofits, participating in civic organizations or engaging in mentorship programs, we all have the ability to positively impact our communities.

In western Iowa, Valley View Dental in Council Bluffs is hosting “Purposeful Purses” through the month of November. They are encouraging the community to donate a new or gently used purse with a special accessory inside such as a scarf, jewelry, or sunglasses. Valley View Dental team will fill each purse with toiletries and donate them to a local women’s shelter.

Owner of Valley View Dental, Dr. Mary Rock states, “It’s that time of year when we can look around and be thankful for what we have and give back to community members in need.” Donations are being accepted at Valley View Dental, Monday through Thursday, 8:00 – 4:30.

Five Iowa businesses are joining TS Bank to collect items: Nesting Grounds in

Underwood (kid hats and gloves), Destinations Coffee in Oakland (kid hats, gloves and diapers), Heartland Properties (kid hats, gloves and diapers), Castle and Associates (diapers) and Caddies Kitchen & Cocktails (kid hats and gloves). Hats and gloves will go to local elementary schools and diapers to FAMILY, Inc.

There are many ways your business can support Giving Tuesday efforts, whether it’s matching gifts, collecting items or organizing a volunteer day. If you’re interested in leading a Giving Tuesday initiative, contact Marjorie Maas at marjorie@shareomaha.org.

For Iowa-based businesses, contact Donna Dostal at ddostal@givewesterniowa.org.

Plan Your Giving for the Greatest Impact

WHICH TYPE OF ASSET DONATION WILL

There is still time to plan for your charitable giving in 2022, and there are many options beyond writing a check. Sometimes, utilizing other assets can have the dual advantages of maximizing tax benefits for you and your family and allowing you to give more to nonprofits. This ensures that your donations have the greatest impact in the community while also providing you with the most tax advantages possible.

While cash is easy to donate, it may not be the right option for all situations. Below are some examples of non-cash assets you can donate that will benefit your favorite nonprofits and your tax planning.

Charitable IRA Rollover

If you own an IRA, a Charitable IRA Rollover (also known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution) is a tax-savvy way to use your retirement assets during your lifetime to make charitable gifts.

If you are 70 1/2 or older, you can donate up to $100,000 per year from an IRA directly to a charitable organization, including a fund at the Omaha Community Foundation. The donation is excluded from your taxable income and counts toward your required minimum distribution if you are required to take one.

The Charitable IRA rollover operates separately from the percentage rules that limit the tax benefit of individual charitable giving. So, if you are inclined to give more than the standard deduction, this rollover is a great option for you. You may find that the rollover provides greater tax savings than cash donations because your adjusted gross income is lower.

In addition, if you name a nonprofit as a full or partial beneficiary on your IRA or other retirement accounts, neither you nor your heirs will pay taxes on that portion of the distribution.

Real Estate

Donating real estate is another fantastic way to support causes you care about. It is also one of the most financially beneficial types of gifts for donors.

As with gifts of other long-term appreciated assets, donating real estate to a charitable organization, such as a Donor Advised Fund at the Omaha Community Foundation, is generally deductible at the property’s fair market value at the time of the gift and avoids capital gains taxes. That means the charity will receive more value from the property donation than if you sold the property and then donate the proceeds. Your real estate donation can also support nonprofits for years to come with a Charitable Remainder Trust. The trust produces income for you during your lifetime, then the remainder goes to a charitable organization of your choice named as your beneficiary. Naming a Donor Advised Fund at the Omaha Community Foundation as your beneficiary has a variety of benefits: the ability to support organizations directly from the fund, working with us to leverage our deep knowledge of the community and its needs, and building a lasting legacy your family can continue to participate in.

The income tax deduction takes place when your property is transferred into the trust based on the present value of the assets that will eventually go to the charity.

Business Interests and Stocks

Business owners can also take advantage of tax-wise charitable giving. If you plan to sell your business, pass it to the next generation, or hold long-term highly-appreciated stock, consider donating some of your closely held or publicly traded stock to your favorite nonprofit.

Donating stock outright avoids capital gains tax. The transaction results in more dollars to support causes than you would have had if you had sold the asset, paid capital gains, and given the remaining proceeds to charity.

This is the perfect time of the year to think through how to enhance tax planning while supporting your community.

If you have any questions about charitable giving, reach out to the team at the Omaha Community Foundation about ways to increase your impact with the most tax-effective method: 402-342-3458 or giving@omahafoundation.org.

Bringing Wellness to Light

An idea in the making for 13 years, Valo Wellness Spa was established by nature lover and wellness enthusiast Kelly Davis in August 2022 with the intent of offering an all-encompassing approach to health and wellness in the Omaha community. Located in Regency Court Shopping Center, Valo offers traditional spa treatments, as well as an accessible wellness playground providing innovative wellness modalities suitable for all types of clients.

Starting Point

Prior to her recent entrepreneurship endeavor, Davis traveled the country managing a team of high performance show jumping horses, working with some of the top athletes in the U.S.

It was during this experience that she connected with an equine physical therapist, who was also human certified and used many non-invasive modalities. Because of this, Davis acquired a love for light therapies, as this type of treatment does not damage the muscle or body. For more than a decade, she had dreams of one day opening her own spa where she could combine modern therapies and natural products.

“About three years ago, I finally took the leap and started to really solidify the idea,” Davis said.

Inspired by the Scandinavian value of Hygge, often described as a feeling of contentment and well-being, Davis compiled a list of possible business names in Norwegian, Sweden and Finnish before finally landing on “Valo” — which means “light” in Finnish.

“It was a simple, easy word and it represented what I wanted to do, which was bring the light to Omaha, and be a light in wellness,” she said.

Growing up on a 150-acre farm outside of town, Davis fondly recalled that some of her best memories were playing outside in nature.

She has always felt strongly about nature’s healing powers. For this reason, Davis was determined to not only connect clients with nature as much as possible, but also focus on sustainability through the business’ design, brands and operational standards. For example, every trash bag used by Valo is compostable and for each uniform purchased there is a tree planted.

“We really want to help people, while also helping the planet,” Davis said. “Nature is where we come from, and what we also need to remain loyal to.”

Promoting Wellness

Davis said there are many layers to Valo Wellness Spa that make it a resource for the community. First and foremost, it serves as a day spa in

which all treatments and products are carefully curated with science in mind and only non-invasive modalities are used. It also allows guests to experience an accessible wellness playground where 15 to 30 minute low touch modalities can be explored.

“We have the latest technology coming out in the wellness industry,” Davis said. “It’s a great way for guests to try different things that can improve their lifestyle. That is our main mission — to help people find what works best for them because no one is exactly the same.”

Educating on wellness is also important, which is why the business hosts a series of workshops and events featuring a roster of holistic health practitioners. In addition to spa services, clients can be seen by these experts when they stop in, as Valo rents space to a variety of practitioners who specialize in subjects like reiki, sound bowl healing and dietary habits.

After years of anticipation and planning for the business, it is watching her entire team come together to deliver a positive experience for clients that has proven to be the most rewarding piece for Davis.

“I also love seeing people come out of their treatments with a new, refreshed look on their face,” Davis said.

Coming Soon

As winter quickly approaches, Davis said the team is gearing up by curating gift packages that will be available for purchase throughout the holiday season. Additionally, the business has experienced an uptick in more people seeking treatments that will help protect their skin from the cold and dry months ahead. Another trend in the wellness industry right now is biohacking meditation, which Davis said can significantly improve meditation practices.

As the new year approaches, Davis has plans to continue to expand by bringing a few more holistic health practitioners on board, while solidifying upcoming workshops. For the time being, she is soaking in the feedback she’s received since opening.

“It is so nice to hear clients say Omaha needed something like this,” Davis said. “It’s been very fun so far and I know it will continue to be fun with lots of learning experiences.”

2022 EthicSpace Conference

BUILDING A CULTURE OF TRUST

The Business Ethics Alliance brings businesses together with a focus on ethics

More than 350 individuals from Nebraska and Southwest Iowa came together recently to explore the importance of ethical leadership inside of business operations. The theme of this year’s conference was Building a Culture of Trust, and participants took part in discussions inside of breakout sessions and an interactive keynote address to explore ways to foster the type of organizational cultures everyone deserves.

Two Breakout sessions offered interactive opportunities to learn, and apply principles of ethical leadership

Dr. Erika Kirby, Professor of Communication at Creighton University led sessions on Communication and the Cultivation of Trust. Here participants addressed ways to build psychological safety and create organizational settings in which everyone feels safe to speak up without risk of punishment or humiliation.

Dr. Erin Bass, Associate Professor of Management at the University of Nebraska Omaha steered conversations around Ethical Decision Making. Participants explored how businesses can be ethically responsible; maximizing financial and social responsibility. Dr. Bass facilitated discussions that challenged everyone to explore their day-to-day decisions as leaders and professionals.

A Keynote address that offered a glimpse of the past, and a lesson for the future Sherron Watkins is known internationally as the Enron whistleblower. She spoke with EthicSpace attendees about ethics and leadership, and the lessons learned from the collapse of Enron. Her message encouraged leaders at every level to embrace the lessons learned inside of the breakout sessions and work intentionally to create cultures rich with trust and a foundation of ethical decision making.

A 30-minute question and answer session after the keynote address made this conference experience truly unique and special.

“Ethical leadership is at the heart of what we all do,” said Business Ethics Alliance CEO and Executive Director Michael Robinson. “It’s imperative that we come together as business professionals, as peers, and as community partners and engage in conversations about creating cultures based on ethics.” EthicSpace is the only ethics-focused conference in the Midwest. Its goal is to provide attendees with practical tips and tools that help them create work environments where people feel valued, respected, appreciated, and heard.

The conference concentrates the mission of the Business Ethics Alliance into a one-day event that helps organizations be more ethics-focused the other 364 days of the year.

About the Business Ethics Alliance (BEA): The BEA was founded in 2008 out of a partnership with the Greater Omaha Business Community, The Better Business Bureau, The Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, and the Heider College of Business at Creighton University. Everything the Alliance does promotes an environment where the discussion and practice of ethics are encouraged and expected in our local community. Because business leaders trust the Alliance, it is able to create forums to have conversations that no one else in the community can have. The Alliance’s brand of ethics education is impartial, research-based, and respectful.

Career-changing ‘yes’  CHRISTOPHER PHILLIPS THRIVES AT NORTH END TELESERVICES

Christopher Phillips has learned throughout his life that the best way to open doors and create opportunities is by simply saying “yes.”

“One thing that my CEO taught me when I very first started was to say ‘yes’ to every opportunity,” he said. “And that has given me the opportunity to learn so many different professions inside of our organization because every time there was an opportunity to do something different, I jumped at that.”

This piece of advice impacted Phillips greatly and taking advantage of new opportunities landed him in his current role as chief operating officer of North End Teleservices.

Phillips attended Metropolitan Community College where he received an associate degree in liberal arts. While he doesn’t necessarily feel as though college prepared him for the subject matter of his current role, he believes it gave him the skills to be successful in the workplace.

“School for me is about learning prioritization, dedication, how to mix inside of your classes, interpersonal skills, things of that nature,” he said. “So that definitely has been a benefit in my current career. I studied people too. I took sociology classes, and that’s helpful, especially in the sales process.”

While earning his degree, Phillips also started working in food service in the health care industry at Hillcrest Health Services. He worked there for about a decade until he was offered a position at North End Teleservices.

“This opportunity popped up in 2015,” he said. “It was something completely different outside of my realm of comfortability. I took a chance at an opportunity that was presented to me, and one of the things I tell my team members now as I progress in my career is if somebody opens a door for you, it’s your job to run through that.”

In his current role his focus is on the company’s internal and external strategy and execution of clients’ needs. Despite the fear of jumping into something new, Phillips is proud that his faith in both himself and the company helped him take the leap.

“I knew that at that point in my life, I wanted to do something more impactful,” he said. “And when I heard about North End Teleservices, I knew I wanted to be a part of changing the community and making an impact.

“Since joining the organization, I’ve been able to be impacted by that same thing, and then

I’ve seen so many people come behind me with the same experience. Getting to see people purchase their first homes, their first cars, and have so many life-changing events has been an amazing experience.”

Innovation and Growth

North End Teleservices consults with many different companies and operates a variety of businesses within the organization. With each client being different, Phillips says that innovation is crucial.

“There is no box, we operate inside of a space that we create. We are innovative and creative, and don’t present the norm,” he said. “A lot of mistakes that new entrylevel professionals make is thinking that you have to operate inside of the corporate structure that exists. I think being different is really important.”

Finding creative solutions to problems that clients are facing is a daily challenge for Phillips, but he believes that there is nothing that North End Teleservices can’t solve.

“There’s a different challenge every day,” he said. “I always tell myself and my team to never fold. We are going to dig our feet in and do whatever it takes to deliver. That’s how we live every single day. There’s no challenge too big. I can’t think of one that comes to mind because we’re gonna make it happen somewhere, somehow.”

At the grand opening of North End Teleservices, the company promised that it would deliver 200 jobs to the community. It has since surpassed that number, and Phillips hopes to continue to grow the company.

“I mean, we intend to take over the world, but we’re going to change in so many different ways,” he said. “We are going into different avenues of business. We are currently working on a new facility, which is super exciting for us. It’s a buildout and another promise to the community that we’re going to deliver on.”

On Tuesday, November 1st, TS Bank, Advance Southwest Iowa, and several community partners hosted the 2022 rendition of the REV Pitch Competition. The event was held at PACE in Council Bluffs and small business owners pitched for the chance to win $14,000 to grow and scale their businesses. This year’s winners include Nesting Grounds at $10,000 and Fermented Felon at $4,000. Nesting Grounds is a female-owned business in Underwood and Fermented Felon is based in Bellevue.

Nesting Grounds plans to use the $10,000 in REV funds for a new drive-through and walk-up menu board, microphone system, headsets, patio lighting, shades, and an outdoor speaker system.

Fermented Felon, a business making handcrafted kombucha using natural ingredients, will use its $4,000 award to purchase two new 1,000liter variable-volume fermenters to help defray production costs. It will also allow them to expand their distribution network into new targeted markets.

Dozens of applications were received, but in the end, five business owners pitched to a group of judges who ultimately made the decision to distribute the funds in this manner.

The Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce was pleased to sponsor the event, and President & CEO Drew Kamp served as a judge at the event.

“Events such as this set Southwest Iowa apart and provide opportunities for local small business owners and entrepreneurs to scale their businesses and have a higher probability of success. We thank TS Bank and Advance Southwest Iowa for making this possible and allowing us to partner with them in doing so,” said Kamp.

TS Bank has led this initiative since its inception in 2015, and Advance Southwest Iowa joined in the effort in 2020. In that time, over $114,000 has been awarded to participating businesses.

“We believe our communities are only as strong as our small businesses. We want to help create a positive ecosystem for more startups in southwest Iowa. Launching REV and collaborative partnerships help spur continued growth and for more business dreams to become reality,” said Kelsey Stupfell, Director of Public Relations for TS Bank.

Advance Southwest Iowa’s President and CEO Paula Hazlewood shares Kelsey’s sentiment.

HOLIDAY SEASON

The Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce welcomes the holiday season…the decorations, the lights, the music, and best of all, the food, and gifts. We have all heard of the many benefits of shopping locally. Most importantly, such sales provide a significant economic boost to the local community and local business owners alike via the taxes and fees every purchase creates. These dollars are then reinvested back into the community, which is the greatest benefit of all.

According to Forbes.com, small businesses reinvest in the local economy at a higher rate than chains do. For every $100 spent at a local business, approximately $68 stays in the community. This is more than two times the amount that national chains reinvest into

“Advance’s partnership with TS Bank in 2020 to relaunch REV has proven to be an important component to ramp up the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Southwest Iowa. The 2022 REV event was a great opportunity for the community to support our entrepreneurs and small businesses as they pitched their ideas and showed their passion for growing their businesses. Advance’s LaUNch initiative was strategically designed to assist those founders that are working from their barns, garages and kitchen tables . . . dreamers are “always” welcomed @ https:// advancesouthwestiowa.com/startup%2Flaunch.” TS Bank, Advance Southwest Iowa, and participating community partners are very excited to see what REV will have to offer in 2023 and beyond, as the entrepreneurial ecosystem continues to grow throughout Southwest Iowa. The Entrepreneurial Task Force, led by Advance Southwest Iowa, with the support of the Iowa West Foundation, stands ready to serve this critical demographic going forward.

the local community.

Our metro area has numerous independent businesses that need your support this holiday season. The Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce encourages consumers to find ways to support these local independent businesses on Small Business Saturday on November 26, 2022.
