“The biggest job that we had was to make it a singular unique hotel that respects its history,” McLeay said.

As Omaha natives with strong family, business and social roots in the city, the three owners were unwavering in their vision of the hotel as a unique destination.

“The property did not deserve any generic decisions,” Lund said. “Just because it’s in a hotel somewhere else doesn’t mean it would have worked in this hotel … we didn’t necessarily have to pick every fork and chair and light — we wanted to.”

The Orleans Room, known as the originator of the Reuben sandwich, has been updated and features French-inspired cuisine and design. The Petit Orleans is a grab-and-go style breakfast and lunch café — an added modern amenity.

The Cottonwood Room, a speakeasy-style cocktail bar with a faux cottonwood tree as the centerpiece, features the original sign. Throughout the process, each owner took on various projects. Since the three had already worked together on several Blackstone District projects, they relied on each other’s strengths and had a high level of trust, McLeay said.

“Tom was very heavily involved in the financing and structure and then Matt took on this really heavy role in construction management,” Lund said. “I tended to gravitate towards the creative decisions with the brand and the logos and art and music and some of these other areas. Then after that we kind of took on more physical sort of assignments. I was working on a lot of the lower level of the Cottonwood Room and the Committee Chophouse, Tom was heavily involved in pretty much all of the whole exterior — pool and deck and pool house.

“At a certain point we had to divide and conquer. We didn’t have the bandwidth and it wasn’t efficient for all three of us to work on everything. It’s been fun — we each kind of have our own little pet project/ zones.”

While the November ribbon cutting wasn’t the big celebration they would have hoped for because of the pandemic, seeing guests check in and patrons socializing at the lobby bar are important milestones.

An operating business isn’t static, McLeay said, and there is always something to work on and make perfect.

“I’m not sure I’ll really feel like it’s done until this hypothetical day when we’ve got multiple weddings here, the hotel is sold out, people are excited, COVID is over, the restaurant is booked — until that moment when it’s truly the hub of the Omaha world for at least a minute, that I think will be ... we did what I was hoping at least to do,” McLeay said.

Lund agreed, adding that he wants every Omahan to visit.

“It should be kind of one of those places and that people do start to refer to it in more of a possessive tense,” he said. “Where it’s, ‘I’m from Omaha and this is our hotel’ — friends are in town and they want to show off and it starts to take on that community ownership and pride.”

‘People are flocking to music.’ Instrument stores are trying to keep up

Abby McGuire started playing the ukulele at age 5. A couple years later, she sold 300 homemade bookmarks to earn the money for a 3/4 -size guitar. Now a fifth-grader, Abby spent the pandemic plugging away at virtual Trends lessons, practicing on her own, even giving a front-yard recital.

Instruments have been harder to come by during the pandemic, especially guitars. Some players, like Abby, have dedicated more hours to their hobby while stuck at home and are now upgrading. Others are testing out their musical talents for the first time, buying starter pieces. Scrambled supply chains have further thinned the selection.

The sales of musical instruments have been one of the few bright spots for stores. Foot traffic has crashed. In-person lessons have stalled. And rentals — without school

programs — are almost nonexistent. Repair work is up, as are online sales, but they haven't always compensated for the other losses.

Guitar Center, the largest musical instrument retailer in the United States, reported an 85% jump in business in August, moving almost three times as many guitars as usual. But it wasn't enough to stave off bankruptcy, which the company blamed on not being able to bounce back from the spring shutdown of most of its nearly 300 stores.

Small stores have been hit hard, too.

After participating in a year-long educational series on establishing a new carbon reduction goal and soliciting public opinion at the beginning of the month, the Lincoln Electric Systems administrative board adopted a 100% net decarbonization goal by 2040. LES acknowledges that the emissions of greenhouse gases from fossil fuel-fired power generating plants contribute to increased concentration levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, which in turn contributes to climate change. The board adopted this goal in response to the risks associated with climate change.

Hy-Vee has reinstated its reserved shopping hour for customers considered “high risk.” The reserved hour will be offered at all Hy-Vee locations from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., Monday through Friday, and is dedicated for customers: Ages 60 and older; expectant mothers; and anyone with an underlying health condition(s) that makes him/her more susceptible to serious illness.

Scooter’s Coffee is now available at all 124 Fareway stores across Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri and South Dakota. Fareway shoppers can find 17 varieties of packaged and ready-to-drink Scooter’s Coffee located in the coffee aisle. With the new Fareway relationship, Scooter’s Coffee has nearly doubled its grocery retail distribution across the Midwest. Shoppers can now find Scooter’s Coffee in more than 280 grocery stores in markets like Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska; Des Moines, Iowa; Kansas City, Missouri; and Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Brittany Thomas, an Omaha mother, has founded Dreamy Displays to create experiences for metro area residents. Thomas, the mother of now 3-year-old twin boys, initially struggled to balance the demands of parenthood and a full-time job when one of her children was diagnosed with Laryngomalacia; a potentially life-threatening diagnosis that often requires surgery and careful monitoring for parents. Dreamy Displays offers rentals, including the first Champagne Wall in Omaha, to custom builds for weddings, corporate events, birthday parties and more. Dreamy Displays accepts clients in Nebraska and the surrounding areas, with rental prices starting at $100 and custom builds at $499.

Two local McDonald’s restaurant man-

agers in Omaha have won Ray Kroc Awards, an accolade that recognizes the top-performing 1% of McDonald’s restaurant managers globally. Local managers Jonathan Chavez and Vikki Buck were two of 365 McDonald’s restaurant managers around the world, from 60 markets, to receive the honor, which includes a cash prize and a trophy. Chavez is the manager of the McDonald’s restaurant located at 2410 Cuming Street. Buck is the manager of the McDonald’s restaurant in Omaha at 122 S. 40th St.

Health care notes…

Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) and Patient-Centered Medical Homes (PCMHs) partnering with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) in the company’s Total Care program drove improved patient health outcomes while lowering the cost of care during the 2019-2020 program year, achieving savings of approximately $82.8 million– up 26% over the previous program year. The annual health care costs for BCBSNE members attributed to ACO providers were $720 lower on average than those of members who were not in a Total Care arrangement last year (more than $60 in savings per month).

Hy-Vee, Inc. will offer rapid antigen COVID-19 testing at 47 Hy-Vee pharmacy locations via an outdoor, drive-thru testing process. Patients will receive same day test results in 1-2 hours. Cost for the test varies by location. Hy-Vee is only accepting testing payment by credit or debit card at the testing site. Patients must register ahead of time online to schedule a testing time and location and to receive a test voucher number. During registration, patients will be able to view the testing cost for their location. Any individual who is asymptomatic and has not had a known exposure in the last 14 days will not be eligible for testing through Hy-Vee at this time.

Education notes…

Congressman Jeff Fortenberry, ranking member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, was successful in achieving $11.2 million in federal funding for the planning and design of a USDA Agricultural Research Service facility. The funding is included in the federal 2021 omnibus appropriations bill, which was approved by Congress. Fortenberry said the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will be the site of the facility. Nebraska is the nation’s third-largest ag economy, with agricultural production contributing more than $21 billion annually.

Activities of nonprofits…

Mosaic — a whole-person health care nonprofit serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities — has elected Dan Friedlund to serve a three-year term on the board of directors. Friedlund brings 50 years of experience in finance, administration and volunteerism to Mosaic. In 2006, he took an early retirement and began a “volunteer career” when he lent his finance and administration expertise to various nonprofit organizations, boards and committees in Omaha. It was 2009 when Immanuel Communities asked him to come out of retirement to become its chief financial officer. He was there for six years, when in 2015, he took his second retirement — again answering the call to volunteer.

Midlands Community Foundation has elected Thomas Ackley to a three-year term as president. Black Hills Energy is donating nearly $760,000 to support 50 United Way agencies across its service area. In Nebraska, more than 200 Black Hills Energy employees, along with the 25% Foundation match, pledged over $127,000 to support 13 United Way campaigns, including: Cornhusker United Way, Gage County United Way, Lexington United Way, Mid-Plains United Way, Inc., Norfolk Area United Way, Inc., United Way of the Kearney Area, United Way of Lincoln & Lancaster County, Columbus Area United Way, Inc., United Way of the Midlands, United Way of South Central Nebraska, United Way of Western Nebraska, United Way of York, and Wayne United Way.

Calvin L. Hinz

President Emeritus Calvin L. Hinz Architects, P.C. Calvin L. Hinz Architects, P.C. (CLH Architects) transitioned to new ownership July 24, 2020 after 24 years of operation. Previous owner Cal Hinz, currently President Emeritus will officially retire July 24, 2021. Cal started his career at Ambrose Jackson & Associates and like many young architects worked at several architectural firms working his way up the ladder such as HDR delivering blueprints and at Leo A Daly, Jackson Jackson & Associates later joining Keeler Raynor & Associates in Bellevue which was a three man firm at the time. It was here he became partners with Dennis Raynor in 1996. Dennis Raynor was looking for a partner that could bring in more diverse projects in healthcare, financial and senior care arenas. The firm name was changed to Keeler Raynor Hinz. While Dennis Raynor was devotedly involved in the design of Boystown Chambers Chapel and Bellevue Schools, Cal grew the business with Methodist Physicians Clinics around the city and several regional credit unions, Hillcrest Healthcare Mable Rose and later Hansen House Senior Care facilities. Dennis lost his battle with cancer early in their partnership and the firm name was changed to Calvin L. Hinz Architects, P.C. (CLH Architects) which has grown to a staff of 21 currently. His wife of 50 years (Laurie) became the Business Manager in 2000. They designed and built the first office condo in the Elkhorn area overlooking hole one of the Indian Creek Golf Course where they moved the office in 2005. The firm later designed the next office building up the hill overlooking the same hole. Cal’s son Ryan joined the firm in 2015 as the National Business Development liaison developing relationships with all clients and Government clients in the Department of Veterans Affairs Administration. Cal’s daughter Christine considered joining the firm as an interior designer but decided it best to stay in her field of expertise in healthcare which ironically takes her to some of the rural health facilities designed by CLH. Cal stated he was proud and honored to have as firm accomplishments the renovation of the Motto McLean Ice Arena, Katherine and Fred Buffett Learning Center at Fontenelle Forest where he had the opportunity to meet Warren Buffett at the grand opening gala and the opportunity to work with the Walter Scott family on two Caroline Scott Rainbow houses for the Children’s Hospital & Medical Center. He has also had the great fortune to work with the dedicated staff at Boystown Campus and the Boystown National Research Hospital on many projects to include the Behaviorial Health Building on West Dodge. His Veteran Owned Small Business status came about after being approached by the Nebraska Business Development Center to become a certified SDVOSB firm, which later afforded him the opportunity for several Indefinite Delivery IDIQ Contract Awards and Task Orders from California to New Jersey and Minnesota to Texas, while holding registrations in 13 states. Later the firm was voted NBDC Government Contractor of the Year for their work with military contracts. Cal was asked to serve on the same NBDC board where they voted on future awards for other small businesses in the state of Nebraska. Cal said he owes a great deal to the efforts of the Nebraska Business Development Center at UNO for their encouragement to become SDVOSB certified. The proudest part of his career is to have had the opportunity to give back to the veterans by designing new facilities and renovations to existing VA hospitals playing a role in veterans access to modern state of the art healthcare, and when presented the opportunity to work with the Valley American Legion he was eager to donate his services on the design of the Valley, NE Veterans Park. Community boards he served on were the Alzheimers Association of the Midlands spearheading many motorcycle rides as fundraising events, the Board of Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boystown Boosters, Elkhorn Rotary President, Western Douglas County Chamber and 2013 AIA Convention Chairman. Now CLH has the good fortune to team with a retired Lt. Col of the USAF in transitioning the firm to another certified SDVOSB owner, who will carry on the military contracts and keep the firm in existence under the new leadership which has been his goal. Cal said what he will miss most in his retirement is his relationships with clients many of whom became so much more than clients, they became friends and he will greatly miss working with the talented and dedicated staff that helped make the firm so successful.
