BEAUTY Makeup Artist Zoey Meisel Sometimes, life is like a box of chocolates and sometimes it is like a circle. Zoey Meisel’s story is definitely circular. Most make-up artists have stories of growing up around make-up and being inspired by someone close to them; here Zoey is no exception. Her aunt’s beauty choices influenced her own and at the age of 12 when other girls were buying drugstore eyeliner and mascara; Zoey was buying makeup from department store counters. She was not yet aware of how to apply make-up. Going from cosmetology school in New Jersey to esthetician school in North Carolina, the pursuit of make-up took a backseat to working in skincare with clients at a spa. During this time, she continued to apply make-up on co-workers and friends. Through word of mouth, she landed her first photoshoot job doing make-up for a local model and photographer in North Carolina. Zoey describes it as a “great experience.” Realizing that North Carolina was no longer where she wanted to be, Zoey packed her bags and moved to South Florida. Again Zoey enrolls in school, this time it is Cosmix School of Makeup Artistry. The knowledge she gained here and the teachers’ stories gave her hope that she could finally make a success of herself in the make-up industry. Being here is the place where Zoey finally needed to be. Currently, Zoey is working as a counter manager for the same department store makeup brand that she purchased as a child. For Zoey Meisel, life really came around full circle.

CARTISS BROWN A woman who can prove that what she wants is what she gets. by Melina Borrero

mborrerophoto.com / SPRING 2012

It was a list. On this list were all the things Cartiss Brown wanted to accomplish. We talked about the list for quite sometime on the day we met. At first I thought, “How could anyone accomplish all those things?” Apparently, Cartiss Brown is not just anyone. On the list were things like modeling, dancing, and acting…there were specifics but I do not recall them. A year later I met up with Cartiss for another photoshoot. And oh did I remember the list. However, during that year she and I had become facebook friends, so I didn’t really have to ask her how she was doing with the list, because I already knew that she had been modeling both for print and on the runway, I already knew that she was performing with a dance troop, and I knew that she was a featured extra on Burn Notice. I congratulated her and she was my new heroine. Cartiss has had small parts in films like Planeta Desconocido and Crazy Love. In Planeta Desconocido, she worked on a green screen set. Cartiss was even able to bring her son into the film and described the experience as a lot of fun. I asked her how she was cast for this movie and the answer was facebook; so the networking factor really works. For Crazy Love, Cartiss had a supporting role where she plays a salon stylist that offers advice to the other characters about matters of the heart. You might have seen her in episodes of The Glades and the Terrell Owens show as well as several commercials. When asked about the future Cartiss said, “The things that are still on my list of things that I want to do is really more of the same just to the next level. I want to work on major campaigns, major feature films and television. I want to work along some of the top designers and actors. I am very proud of what I’ve accomplished so far in such a short period of time.” The secret to Cartiss’ success, if you ask me, is that she is humble and nice. She is simply locked into the flow of intention and what she wants is what she gets.

When diet is wrong, medicine is of no use. When diet is correct, medicine is of no need. ~Ancient Ayurvedic Proverb A lot of saturated fats and cholesterol are found in meat and dairy diet. People suffer from cancer, diabetes, obesity, heart attacks, and other health problems which may be linked to a person’s consumption of meat and dairy. Vegetarians have been shown to have a 24% reduced risk of dying of heart disease. The term vegetarian means to exclude all type of animal meat from the diet. Vegan, another type of diet, excludes the eating of all animal products. Many who grew up with a meat eating tradition may find becoming a vegan to be intimidating. At first, I was intimidated. And now, I eat only from plants such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and grains. Plants are so fresh, living, and healthy you won’t be missing anything. In fact, you will be gaining so much more than you had before. What do vegans eat? There are plenty of colorful, nutritious foods to eat. To meet your daily nutritional requirements, eat vegetables, grains, and protein. Organic vegetables are better, since they are free of pesticides which are not good for the body. When selecting grains, always look for the magic word: whole. Whole grains are full of vitamins and minerals. For example, regular white rice has been stripped of it’s magic. Brown rice, whole wheat pita bread, and corn tortillas are just some of the delicious and nutritious whole grains that are readily available. Where do vegans get their protein? There are plenty of natural foods with protein like tofu, tempeh, seitan, and beans.

We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals. ~Immanuel Kant Knowing you can eat healthy, why let animals suffer? Animals are smart, intelligent beings who desire to live. It has been shown pigs are smarter than dogs, cows take turns babysitting for each other, and hens and chickens talk to each other, even while the chick is still in the egg. Simultaneously, going vegan is also about becoming more eco-friendly. According to a 2006 United Nations report found that raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined. The reason is because cow burps emit huge quantities of methane. The meat industry is responsible of 37% methane emissions. Forests are being destroyed to make room for cattle. When the trees are cut down or burned, the carbon they store escapes back into the air as CO2. Imagine eating this way the rest of your life, living a healthy lifestyle, and not contributing to animal cruelty and global warming. Going vegan is not about missing out on anything. On the contrary is about welcoming new foods into your plate, and your body will thank you. Be healthy, be the change.

To become vegetarian is to step into the stream which leads to nirvana. ~Buddha 32

Who are vegetarians? Who are vegetarians? According to a 2010 article in Psychology Today, people who became a vegetarian before the age of 42 were smarter as children than those who remained meat eaters at age 42. This supports the theory that the more intelligent are evolving. Vegetarians are the super heroes on this planet, in my opinion, for three basic reasons. Vegetarians prevent animals from suffering, conserve massive amount of water (larger amounts of water are used in the meat production process), and solve world hunger by not using the grains that would otherwise fed people to feed animals. The faces of just a few of those that are vegetarian (and vegan) are here on the following pages.

Living is about joy. Society markets and advertises cruelty and torture over compassion and like the majority, I was raised thinking eating meat was moral and justifiable. I love eating a vegetarianmostly vegan diet because I am not longer taking part in killing innocent loving animals for protein. The choice of a cruelty free lifestyle has opened a new world of awareness and has taken away the chronic pain in my body. Gone are the days of constant bloating, fatigue, sadness, and anxiety. Since I have been eating vegetables, grains, beans, nuts, seeds, and fruits, I have so much joy in my life.

“The fact that I would be taking an animal’s life to feed myself has always bothered me. I am a huge lover of animals and it felt wrong to eat meat from them. I have been vegetarian for 2 and half years now and I love it. I feel so much better and healthier.”

“I’m a vegetarian because I found out how animals that we eat every day, from McDonald’s chicken and beef to the packaged meat we buy from the grocery store, are killed. I also have done it for health reasons. My mother has a lot of health problems and I know that I have a high chance of being diagnosed with the same problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and hear t disease. I want to live a much healthier life than my mom and I feel I’m able to accomplish that through being a vegetarian.”.

Natural

Beauty is cruelty-free

I was with Savannah, an aspiring model and actress, when it happened - the realization, the next awakening. I was taking out a compact of COVERGIRL foundation, when Savannah asked, “You know that COVERGIRL tests on animals?” Even though the words spoken were, “You know COVERGIRL tests on animals?” I heard, “You know you paid a company to kill and maim animals.” I was silent and I felt sick. All of a sudden, makeup didn’t seem so beautiful. Savannah knew that I was so proud of the fact that I had adopted a vegetarian-mostly vegan diet and I was no longer harming animals for my physical survival. She made me aware that animals were still being harmed for beauty. Where was I? I thought companies stopped doing that. Did I not get the memo? Was I that naïve? Immediately, I googled the words “makeup animal testing.” P.E.T.A.’s website came up in the search window. I went to the part of the website that covers animal testing. There is a list of companies that test on animals and a list of companies that don’t test on animals. I downloaded and printed the list for companies that do test on animals. I read Johnson & Johnson, Proctor & Gamble, GlaxoSmithKlein, Church & Dwight, and Unilever. These companies’ names repeated next to several brand names like Aussie, Arm and Hammer, Aveeno, Band-aid.

I ran to the kitchen, picked up a product and looked at the manufacturer. It was Proctor and Gamble. I ran to the bathroom and saw Aveeno, Olay, Suave and Band-aid; all products made by companies on the do test on animals list. I began to focus on the cosmetics companies that test on animals. I didn’t see COVERGIRL, but COVERGIRL is made by Proctor and Gamble. Maybelline is on the list so is, L’Oreal, and Neutrogena. In a frenzy, I threw away my favorite brand new COVERGIRL Lash Blast Mascara. I checked the labels on my lipglosses (COVERGIRL) and these colorful cherished products went straight to the trash. I threw out an item by Maybelline, too.

She made me aware that animals were still being harmed for beauty. Where was I? I thought companies stopped doing that. Did I not get the memo? And then I thought, “They already have my money this isn’t helping.” I went back to the computer and started researching more and found pictures and descriptions of what they do to animals for cosmetic tests. I was crying. How could people do this?! They are loving beings just like us (though, at this point I have to admit, I

SPRING 2012 / mborrerophoto.com

wasn’t thinking we were all that loving.) Just then, my husband came home to find me crying hysterically and talking. The look on his face was that of worry. I am sure he didn’t understand a word. And then, I said in a clear voice, “We are not going to buy anymore products from these companies.” And he agreed. I love makeup. I love applying it. I love wearing it. After I found out about all the cosmetic companies that test on animals, I didn’t feel that beautiful wearing it anymore. I sat down and looked over the other P.E.T.A list- companies that don’t test on animals. Avalon Organics was on that list. I use their shampoo and I love it -my hair rarely get split ends. I found out they have a skin care line and good thing too my Olay ran out and now I could replace it with a clearer conscience.

After I found out about all the cosmetic companies that test on animals, I didn’t feel that beautiful wearing it anymore. When I realized that the rest of the don’t test on animals list had dozens of names of companies that I have never heard before, I thought this is not so simple. Where can I to buy cruelty-free cosmetics? And another thought came to mind, animals are still used “in” cosmetics as ingredients. Only a few cosmetic companies are vegan. Then, I saw Gabriel Cosmetics on the list, a vegan company and remembered that the products are sold at Whole Foods. On the computer again to research more on this issue, I found out that testing on animals is expensive, more expensive than the alternative methods which are more accurate. Many animals don’t even have the same chemistry as humans, so testing on animals doesn’t even make sense. There is no reason to treat animals this way, yet these companies do everyday and I had been funding the cruelty. True natural beauty is cruelty-free. I started to rethink my feelings about makeup, and asked myself, “How could I even look in the mirror and see beauty when it came from cruelty?” So, you will be seeing me buying more vegan cosmetics and wearing less makeup.
