Process: This project began with a story based on the present site + my past memories of Rundle street + tomorrow’s ambitions and atmospheres. I sketched with words. With this point of departure, the next question was, how do I translate this body of text into architectural form ? With an interest in building an apparatus / machine to map the story, I decided on building a “Typewriter Drawing Machine”. I purchased two old typewriters, one working and one broken. However, pulling apart the broken typewriter I discovered the beauty in the parts themselves and this lead to forming architecture from mechanical compositions, while simultaneously inputing my story into this process of part-composing. After finding the right compositions, analogue sketching was utilized to refine and find space. Proposal Circa 2035. Architextural Mechanism is an urban intervention that exists in 2035. The two towers rise out of the East end of the city on Rundle street. The West tower contains a vertical market, which takes inspirations from the East end Fresh fruit and Vegetable market from the past. There are living quarters with the ability to plan your own configuration. Throughout the West tower, transition spaces occur allowing for breakout spaces or tower services. An elevated meditation hall can be found, as well as a Hawker food court and city lookout. The East tower contains an open source university, where people learn the skills that they need to achieve their outcomes. This complex contains breakout study areas, a 425 seat lecture venue, tutorial rooms, studio spaces and a traditional workshop space, which also specializes in laser cutting. 3d routing and 3d printing, important machines ever since the embrace and the democratization of production, in the early 2020s, due to the emergence of open source products. Ascending the East tower, a small gallery/event space is found, which leads to the Court of Thought, a public meeting/transition space. In the higher levels one will come across the East tower’s co-working floors, which connect to the Think tank, a hireable meeting room space accessed by the co-working levels. Both towers are connected by a sky bridge.

He looked up and saw something, which he had not seen in a long time.

Present Site + My Memories + tomorrow’s ambition • atmospheres I S k e t c h e d w i t h W o r d s As he climbed the staircase he counted the steps losing count, distracted by a woman with red bright lipstick. He stopped in confusion and awe as he witnessed the court of thought, where fools, dreamers and business men shared ideas and conducted their own business. Here the old merged into the new, stone, glass, fabric and steel bound together. There he asked a fool how to reach the smiling man. Water flowed in the stone ground as it does in the chambers of Zoroastrian temples. The fool spoke and led him to a dreamer who was tall, and he had a pen in one hand and an orange in the other. He was drawing an extension to his space, which he had acquired for 9 years. One could really see the gleam in his eyes, for he was in love with the potential. He guided him via a broken hung passage held together tight, renovations were in progress yet wabi sabi. He could see the hills and the sea at one point it was silent. He approached with the dreamer. The dreamer pointed to a large copper door. Incense was in the air as the door opened. There in the doorway I asked a question to the smiling man, the dreamer look on from a distance. “Why are you smiling?” I am in the present

Architecture from Mechanical Compositions

A man smiling for he had found a home in a place free from the past yet connected to the earth. The birds had accepted it, and made it their home, therefore enabling the consciousness of the city and nature to merge and hang in the balance. Eclectic in its own way binding the old with the new. He remembered how he felt as a child, everything was new, he remembered his first bike or his first birthday cake with his mother and father, it seems so long ago, those experiences in atmospheres were part of a simple time. This was a new atmosphere. His heart beating from nostalgia, he decides to meet the smiling man. He gazed upon the metabolism in flux and he entered a hanging chamber flooded in light, his shadow vacant, part of a once confined sanctuary. A cold mist dotted with amber aqua light led to the new market, sandalwood smoke created ambience, babel of the neo venders echoed. The building chimed in the wind, its shields shining, glistening in the sun.

Sanctum is a site-specific intervention providing a comfortable refuge space away from the hustle and bustle of Victoria Square. Based within the parameters of ‘Suburban City Corner’ vision. The vision was translated in the ‘L – Shaped corner typology’. The Key Moves of the design intervention were anchored upon 5 design principles: levels of interpretation, simplicity and complexity, flexible spaces, interplay of materials and shade & comfort. The Key Moves: Sanctum is entered obliquely bypassing large pivoting bronze doors, 5m tall and 8m wide, with embossed federation floral patterns. The doors create a division between the Victoria Square space domain and the ‘inner’ Sanctum. Along the inside of the doors is the glass pavilion made from laminated glass structural members. It is inspired by the Nordic pavilion by Sverre Fehn and the roof lattice from the ‘Last Supper’ by Leonardo da Vinci. Covered in key spots, to protect against the elements, simple movable furniture is placed around for the public to sit wherever they please. This landscape introduces a shallow water feature, which takes cues from Matthew 14:22-33, where Jesus walks on water – a ‘walking on water feature’ with the statue of Mary Mackillop repositioned obliquely within it. An Australian drift planting style has been adopted with a selection of bright coloured, flowering native plants adding to the biophilic effect for the user. Populus tremuloides - White Poplar trees have been used for the colour of their foliage and their white trunk. Their deciduous nature allows for sun penetration into the plaza during the winter months. Flexible by nature, it is a place for shade, a place to soak in some colour, a place to spend lunchtime and a place to meet a friend or a muse. It is a quiet sheltered space both hidden and open. Sanctum is for people who work in the Sanctum • 2014 surrounding context and the general populace. Masters of Landscape Architecture: Final Project

‘New Perennial Movement’ the ‘Dutch Wave’ The objective of the new perennial movement is to create a space where people can make an emotional connection to nature by experiencing the freedom that comes from standing in a meadow, surrounded by the spontaneous feeling of nature and being able to escape our increasingly urban lifestyles. As much as this type of garden is organized and planned, the idea is to imitate the natural environment and establish a link to nature regardless of the surrounds.

The planting beds take inspiration from dense drift planting practised by Piet Oudolf, Sarah Price and Tom Stuart-Smith . A selection of bright coloured native flowering plants have been chosen due to observations made in Site Analysis and the lack of colour complexity present on the current site. Also native grasses have been chosen to take advantage of their form, plus the South-west wind curving around SA water allows for kinetic beds. The Populus tremuloides White Poplar has been chosen for its foliage colour and white trunk. The deciduous nature of the tree allows sun penetration into the plaza in the winter months.

Urban Design Statement Parallax Tower is a proposed multi-storey mixed-use development, located in the East end of Adelaide, situated and spanning across 13- 21 Frome Street, Adelaide, South Australia. The site of 1500sq metres, is a restricted site, with an existing car park entrance ramp running through it and high restriction, which divides the site. With these parameters in mind, this proposed 24 storey mixeduse development is at a height of 97 metres.

Outcome The eventual intervention is that of a building clad in glass louvers and engraved acrylic panels, lit by LED lights. This treatment is chosen to allow light to enter and maintain the overall temperature of the different spaces. The overall structure of the jagged turning members on the ground floor and the East facade represent point-line joint profiles of stars in the Hercules constellation. The levels in the building, translated from the Photoshop concept image, intended to make the building “light”. The central spine, also the lift core, is used to support the floors with suspension wires. Adaptive re-use has occurred in the observatory, as it has been converted into the gym’s major change-spaces and the main new AUSA Office. The swimming pool level is abstractly based upon the Greek gym planning systems and the floor of the pool is made from glass, which is supported on steel members. Concept Gym • na • si • um ORIGIN late 16th cent.: via Latin from Greek gumnasion, from gumnazein ‘exercise naked,’ from gumnos ‘naked.’ The etymology of the word “Gymnasium” was the starting point of the creative process. From this point many angles were explored, like the original Greek gymnasium planning system- its role in Greek society and its ties to the ancient Greek Olympics. Simultaneously a critical approach was taken in reviewing architectural precedents from the modern day Olympics, like Tokyo 1964 / Munich 1972. This rigor led me to a statement in a book, which outlined the Greek gods associated with fitness and the ancient Olympics - the main one being Hercules: god of strength, courage, ingenuity. Within the proposed site of this project was the existing observatory. This is where the site tied into concept and it all fell into place when it dawned upon me, that up in the sky one can find a star constellation of Hercules. With these “points in space” a deep exploration began to find an architectural form. Doing more research I found the distances of each star from earth. Using this point and line diagrams I experimented. One night the breakthrough came using Photoshop. The image produced subdued me- I felt it represented light caught in motion, this formed the base image for my subsequent architectural development.

Trying to understand the enigma of reality becoming a series of staged fantasies is the essence of HIVE – which acts less to define our reality, instead facilitating fantasy • HIVE seeks to provide an environment in which the miasma of media and the concurrent lifestyles of the people that consume them can be elevated beyond simple experience to the level of transcendent immersion • HIVE is thus named to consider the intensity of the immersive experience and the way that it can relate to the Japanese psyche - creating a fever pitch of activity that buzzes through the 24hr cycle of Tokyo • Intended to be non-referential, HIVE only represents the traces of perceptions of Japanese ‘Otaku’ culture, created through method of free-drawing and manipulated by distortion and disjunction • Featuring tectonic structures, plunging crevices, organic curves, sweeping planes and enticing apertures, HIVE provides a fantastical landscape set within the concrete host; intrinsically linked with Akihabara station • HIVE aims to redefine its context, leaving the realm of geometric solids and morphing into a seemingly chaotic façade subliminally amplifying the intensity of the Media • HIVE is designed as the new concept of entertainment; staged fantasy: immersive, intense, manic and possessive as entertainment should be. This studio asked me to come up with design ideas for a Learning and Research Centre, one to be located in Northern Territory and one in South Australia (McGrath Flat) in 6 weeks. This Learning Centre is aimed to be used for groups such as architecture students to stay for a short period and be involved in a studio-based activity, and for other community groups to learn about the arts and the environment. The Learning Centre could comprise of a main multi-purpose gathering and working spaces (inside & out), a communal kitchen and toilet and storage facilities, and a dormitory of 12 shared rooms (maximum capacity of 4 people/ room, but designed also for couples and families) including shared bathrooms/ toilets. It was imperative that the ideas for this Learning and Research Centre will take into account the local context – the culture, the climate, the available materials, and the spirit of the place. The spaces were meant to allow the occupants to connect with the outdoors; have abundant natural light and fresh air, where occupants can taste the sweetness of the environment, feel the warmth and the cool of the air, of the ground and of the surfaces they touch and experience the site with all their senses.

Develop a business plan and design an Architectural studio. Form groups of up to 5 with at least one member from the opposite discipline. You are a group of young designers establishing a new design studio in Adelaide. Good financial management can make or break any business. It requires a disciplined approach to the planning and control of budgets. The objective of this proposal is an appreciation of the elements involved in constructing a design practice budget, and the key aspects of good financial management in any business + the necessary aspect of firm branding and architectural office design. Outcome: This studio aimed to give us guiding prompts, to direct us to an eventual intervention of the Hart’s Mill site. Initially, using the methods of drawing, modelmaking and conceptualising, we produced a shell, which we then translated into architecture. The initial spark for a movie studio came from a combination of stimuli…Looking at the graphics of ‘Super Studio’, the movie Inception and Man Ray- All these factors lead me to the thought, “What about a Movie Studio on Hart’s Mill Site ? ” “I want this space to be for the dream merchants among us who wish to produce within this dream factory”. The eventual intervention results in the building, which is divided into two halves and clad separately per half. Half of the building is clad in a steel mesh above the building’s structure, which is also used to hold the inner glass cladding. This treatment was inspired by the quote, “We see what they want us to see”. The shell of the back half, is impenetrable to light and sound. This was done to achieve a controlled environment for a production studio space. Adaptive re-use has occurred in both of the existing buildings on site. The Hart’s Mill has been converted into a formal Viewing Theatre. The Adelaide Milling Company has been adapted to house a variety of uses, from videoediting, sound-recording to Administrative offices, plus the studio’s main café space and toilet spaces on the ground level. There is a void between both halves of the building. This was done for access, circulation purposes plus service requirements. There are ornamental structures within the building. It is intended that these structures give added support to the building’s shell structure + act as an installation. This installation, due to its complexity, hopes to act as an inspirational gesture to people working, visiting and learning within Crystal studios.

This studio provided opportunities for exploration of themes in contemporary landscape architecture including interrelationships with planning and ecology. The site was that of the WEST END in ADELAIDE: The themes and site were ambitious in scale, including urban parks, post industrial and urban renewal projects, consistent with effective consideration of the scale of ecological systems and the influence of planning policy. After an advanced collaborative site analysis and a preferred future publication in a team, it was outlined in the preferred future document that bike storage was a lacking element within the West End and seen as a development opportunity. Using the Adelaide power-line poles “stobie poles as a inspiration for aesthetic, materiality and concept, an advanced design resolution was produced, demonstrating critical application of strategic understandings to a specifically contextualised site.

Considering themes in ecological design, context, site anaysis and new technologies as they relate to contemporary landscape architecture, Seaford Square was proposed. This proposal explores topics such as ecology, habitat restoration, hydrology, horticulture, planting design, installation in detail and maintenance and other techniques pertinent to the production of ecologically vibrant landscape from a vague greenfeild town square site.

Project Title Meaning: A speculation of a proposed urban condition of impermanence and change in relation to housing and built fabric. Project Objectives: To provide a homeless shelter solution. This project also aims to provide temporary consistent housing options for people who wish to embrace a lifestyle that is unattached. To provide a level of comfort and service, which is democratic. The underlying urban problems of Grote street outlined in the 5000+ brief have also been addressed in relation to this speculation. Task: “This project proposal should demonstrate an understanding of the role of critique in generating new approaches and new outcomes in response to sitespecific urban development issues. In other words, you must demonstrate what is wrong with the existing situation. Your design proposition must argue for a specific, clearly envisaged and material instance of urban change, development, revitalisation or intervention. New form is generated by proposing form/s alternative to the existing ones; forms which may be borrowed and must be adapted for Adelaide from projects elsewhere. The value of an urban design project (the argued aims of the project) is demonstrated through intervention or change that has effects at several scales. The brief describes three main scales: Macro, Meso and Micro.

Urban Design Studio 2012: • Vagrancy + Grote St

Vagrancy + Grote St

With the current South Australian Parliament media courtyard falling into disrepair and designed to an old obsolete BCA standard, this project was a redesign of this space, with the brief to increase max usable space, add a water feature and update the BCA standard of the space. With its confined awkward shape, some aspects of compliance posed tricky, but were manoeuvred to make a functioning courtyard. The courtyard formal takes cues form Mies Van Der Rohe’s Barcelona pavilion and South Australian material vernacular.
