MCAD ANNUAL REPORT 2009/10
PRESIDENT’S LETTER
One of the great pleasures of my first year as president of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design has been meeting our talented students and seeing how their work and worldviews are taking shape while at MCAD. And every day, I continue to be amazed by you—our dedicated staff, faculty, alumni, and friends—and your continued support of our students. You have generously given your time and resources to make the college everything it is today and everything it is poised to become in the future. Your support has enabled MCAD to invest in continued academic excellence with an increasingly interdisciplinary approach that allows students to combine classical liberal arts training with real-world experience. And I’m pleased to report that, even in this challenging economic climate, MCAD completed its fiscal year 2009/10 on a strong financial footing and with a renewed sense of mission.

Throughout the year, your generosity benefited our students as they engaged in challenging juried exhibits, presentations from leading regional and international artists, and absorbing dialogues with visiting artists and other experts in the world of art and design. You also helped to provide resources for student-run efforts such as DesignWorks (our in-house design firm that created
this annual report), internships, and innovative partnerships with the City of Minneapolis, Allina Hospitals & Clinics, and other nonprofit and business leaders. This ongoing support of our mission helps us to prepare students to be leaders in the fields of art and design, and we are fortunate to have so many alumni whose significant achievements this year will help to light the path ahead: James Casebere ’76 and Kelly Nipper ’93 were both featured in the 2010 Whitney Biennial.
partnerships and community support that made it possible to provide the highest level of arts and design education to our students, as well as the encouragement and practical experience they’ll need to apply their creativity, purpose, and problemsolving skills on a truly global stage. If your name appears in these pages, know that we are deeply grateful for all you do as a creative and contributing member of the MCAD community. Thank you! 03
Mary GrandPré ’81, best known for her illustrations for the Harry Potter books, returned to campus to receive the 2010 Alumni Achievement Award.

Monica Haller ’05, MFA, was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. Stephen Rivkin ’75, along with James Cameron and John Refoua, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Film Editing for work on the blockbuster film Avatar. Paul Shambroom ’78 was a recipient of a 2010 Enduring Vision Award from the Bush Foundation. ACADEMIC PROGRAMS Throughout the year, more than seven hundred degree-seeking students pursued their artistic passions—creative explorations that fulfill MCAD’s mission of enhancing the cultural and creative pulse of our community, both locally and globally. And at the core of this academic journey, the dedicated and talented fulltime and adjunct faculty members provided ongoing support and mentorship to our students and also took the time to finalize an important new faculty handbook.

A student–teacher ratio of 13:1 continued to provide MCAD students with a high-intensity, hands-on learning environment through unique classroom discussions, studio workshops, and lectures. And this year, students also had the opportunity to learn from more than twenty visiting professionals—artists, scholars, curators, and creative directors—who showed their own work, shared insights about the latest art and design, and provided inspiration to our students to help them prepare for a future beyond the classroom.
In 2009/10, MCAD had a student–teacher ratio of
1 3 :1 The school year also saw several academic trends: an increase in enrollment from international and transfer students, new opportunities for international study and exchange, and a growing commitment to business and nonprofit partnerships that provide MCAD students with real-world experiences and new opportunities to improve their communities.

MCAD ANNUAL REPORT 2009/10
EXHIBITIONS AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS During 2009/10, more than two dozen special events—symposia, exhibitions, and guest lectures— advanced MCAD’s tradition of sharing new work across disciplines that inspire and elevate cultural dialogue on campus and throughout the community. Continuing its long collaboration with leading arts grantmakers in the region, MCAD presented new work by the four recipients of the McKnight Foundation Fellowships for Visual Artists, as well as new work by the five recipients of the MCAD/Jerome Foundation Fellowships for Emerging Artists.

Other exhibitions included the semiannual commencement exhibition; Double Shifts, an allschool exhibition of work by college staff; Kidz in the Hall, an installation of studio furniture from recent MCAD graduates; and Water Rights, a juried exploration of the political, natural, and personal forces at work in water.
for a new sculpture park and added campus parking along 26th Street. MCAD’s highly respected continuing studies courses served more than 816 adults and 427 youth. And special events— such as MCAD Conversations and the Great Directors Film Series—continued to engage students, visiting artists, and community members in ongoing conversations about art and design in the global community.
06
Presented together, these efforts engaged more than six thousand visitors and students throughout the year—sparking dialogue, setting the standard for excellence, and sharing the work of MCAD with the wider community.
Expanding on its ongoing service and inspiration to the surrounding community, MCAD created a site A reception for Jennifer Danos, Janet Lobberecht, Margaret Pezalla-Granlund, and Megan Rye, the 2008/9 McKnight fellowship recipients, Summer 2009 Photo by Caitlin Longley ’08

PHILANTHROPY During the fiscal year 2009/10, support grew by 13 percent as corporations, foundations, friends, and alumni responded to a new energy at MCAD and a growing urgency to support students seeking a high-quality arts and design education.
Though it was a challenging year for the economy, MCAD’s community responded with more contributions than the previous year—a sign of the enduring value of an arts and design education and MCAD’s vision for the future.
This year saw several important philanthropic achievements: The National Endowment for the Arts and the Minnesota State Arts Board both provided new funding to support MCAD’s growing summer youth programs.
08
The MCAD Art Sale, the college’s largest student showcase and community event, attracted more than three thousand attendees and raised funds for scholarships.

The creation of two additional endowed scholarships added critical support for the more than nine out of ten MCAD students who receive some form of financial aid.
