This year’s Feb. 1-2 rodeo at the Expo Center, marks the fourth year for the Sam Wampler’s Freedom Ford Hi Lo ProRodeo Presented by Big V Feeds, which has become a popular event in the city Krystal Bess, president and CEO of the McAlester Area Chamber of Commerce, said the two-night event produced by Hi Lo ProRodeo and the McAlester Area Chamber of Commerce has caught on with rodeo fans for a number of reasons. Among several professional events, it features a “Money the Hard Way” competition. “This is one of my favorite events to help put together,” Bess said. “I love to rodeo and I know this event is great for McAlester.” She added it is the largest winter rodeo in Oklahoma and features world-class professional rodeo talent. The PRCA event includes eight-time Rodeo Clown of the Year Dusty Myers and contestants competing for more than $50,000 in prize money. More than 3,500 attended and more than 350 contestants participated in last year’s rodeo, which is affiliated with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. For 2019, Bess said the Chamber plans to continue its Leadership McAlester class. Leadership McAlester was designed to give professional leaders the opportunity to learn more about their community and to develop relationships with other participants and community leaders, she said. In addition to exploring the city, county, healthcare, educational, utilities and large employers in the area, the participants will also develop their team building skills by choosing a service project that will need to be completed by class graduation. Bess said last year, the class put together “Way Finding Signs” which you can see all over McAlester. The signs are designed so visitors and residents can find things such as the McAlester Public Library and City Hall. This year, the class is working together to repaint and fix the exterior of Hope House — a local women’s shelter which helps women find employment, attend counseling sessions, church, and eventually find housing.

Bess said the Chamber is currently working on a new program which will work with area high school seniors to allow them to shadow Chamber business members to see what career path they may want to choose after graduation. Bess has been the Chamber’s CEO for a year and a-half and said she feels the Chamber is growing stronger. “I think there are a lot more people dedicated to the Chamber and want to see it at it’s fullest,” she said. “We have great partnerships with all the different organizations in McAlester now. Bess said the Chamber, McAlester Main Street, McAlester Tourism and Pride In McAlester are all working together towards the same goal — to better the community. “We all work together very well,” she said. Bess said the Chamber and McAlester Tourism are working on bringing more events to the community that are family-friendly and affordable to the area. “We want to help bring money to economic development and money into our community,” Bess said. “We want to bring more events to McAlester like the rodeo, but we are also looking at different ideas to bring to the community in the future.” Bess said her vision for the year 2019 is for the community to know the Chamber is here to support it and help grow the community. 14

uring the recent partial government shutdown, operations at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant and the U.S. Army Defense Ammunition Center continued as usual. That meant a vital part of the workforce in the McAlester area as well as those who commute to the job were able to keep working with pay while a number of other federal employees were either furloughed or worked for several weeks without getting their usual paychecks. Some 1,544 Department of the Army civilian employees work at McAAP and with the one solder on duty at the base —Col. Joseph D .Blanding, who is base commander. Another 100 employees work at the Defense Ammunition Center on the McAAP grounds. “There is no impact due to the government shutdown,” McAAP Public Information Officer Gideon Rogers said at the time the partial government shutdown was in effect. That meant the facility that’s the largest employer in the McAlester area continued as a vital part of the na-

tion’s defense industry despite work stoppages in other fedeal operations. Whether or not a partial government shutdown is in effect, the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant and other aspects of the defense industry in Southeastern Oklahoma have an advocate in the McAlester Defense Support Services. The MDSS is an offshoot of the McAlester Defense Support Association. Housed in the same building where the McAlester Chamber of Commerce is located, the MDSS is currently helmed by Executive Director Jessica Gragg. Working with the city of McAlester as well as with Oklahoma’s U.S. Senate and House delegations, all of the aforementioned parties worked to speed up the time it takes for employment applications at McAAP to make it through the hiring process. Once the OK for McAAP to practice direct hiring techniques made it the through the Department of Defense, the time it took for an individual to go through the

With the Puterbaugh Foundations’ $125,000 grant, the city of McAlester reached the total $664,770 needed to complete the project, which is designed to encompass Choctaw Avenue, between Second Street and South Main Street. City of McAlester Economic Development Director Kirk Ridenour said the city plans to begin soliciting bids for the project. The city hopes to award the bids by April and the

hope is for construction to begin soon thereafter. Construction and completion of the Streetscape project is expected to take approximately four months. “We’re hoping to begin in May and end in August, “Ridenour said. The Puterbaugh Foundation’s $125,000 grant was added to $176,360 from the McAlester City Council. City councilors had made JANUARY 2019
funding contingent on obtaining the rest of the money needed for the project — something that the grant from the Puterbaugh Foundation accomplished. That amount, added to previous grants or allocations, helped move the project forward — with a $149,000 pledge from the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma also proving a major factor in moving the project along.

The Fugitt Foundation also helped by contributing $21,500, making it another large contributor to the project. Highlights of the Downtown Streetscape project include widened or expanded sidewalks, bicycle lanes along Choctaw Avenue, the planting of trees, construction of new storm water drainage systems and new lopped water lines. Installing the new water lines should help with making hopes for downtown living spaces on the upstairs or second stories of some downtown buildings in lofts or apartments more viable, since it is expected to be a major factor in making the installation of more sprinkler systems possible as safety measures. Electrical improvements are also expected. One of the things creating the most excitement among those involved in the project is the construction of a permanent bandstand at First Street and Choctaw Avenue. Ridenour noted that the city will now longer have to pull in a trailer for a downtown parade or other event. Retired Cheif Justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court Steven Taylor is chairman of the Puterbaugh Foundation. He said the

board was glad to help, since one of its puposes is to help with projects that would not be possible without the Foundation’s assistance. City Manager Pete Stasiak felt elated that the Puterbaugh Foundation chose the project for inclusion. “We are excited and thrilled the Puterbaugh Foundation has recognized this as a valuable project for the community,” Stasiak said. “It’s been a long time coming and now it’s coming to fruition.” He also noted the amount of work that has gone into the project. It began with a $20,970 grant from the city, along with $14,500 from a TSET donation from the state’s Toabacco Settlement Endowment Trust funds for healthy living and a $7,500 donation from McAlester Main Street. “It’s been a dream of so many people who’ve worked so hard to make the project happen,” Stasiak said. Ridenour also noted how many people and groups have worked on the project. calling it a great exapmle of collaboration on a project to benefit the downtown McAlester area. • Contact James Beaty at jbeaty@mcalesternews. com

continues with expansion plans
McAleter Regional Health Center CEO David Keith recently gave an update on some of the planned and ongoing operations at the McAlester hospital, which calls itself Southeast Oklahoma’s Leading Healthcare Resource. “It’s our goal at McAlester Regional Health Center to make the city of McAlester a medical destination for Southeastern Oklahoma,” Keith said. “We want to be a supporter of economic development.” Included in the hospital’s two-to-five-year plan is the opening of a clinic in downtown McAlester. Plans call for it be placed in the same building as the McAlester Regional Health Center Diagnostic Imaging facility, which is at 10 S. Third St. in what many locals remember as the former Public Service Co. of Oklahoma building. MRHC Marketing Director Chris Plunkett said space is at a premium on the hospital grounds and hopes for an enhanced patient experience also played into the plans to open a downtown clinic. Those needing to go to a McAlester BUSINESS Watch

clinic are looking for convenience s well as for medical treatment. “Our goal is to move primary care downtown and put it on the top floor of the Imaging Center,” Plunkett said. Many of the hospital’s primary care physicians would have their offices at the downtown facility. Renovations are expected to begin this year. It’s all part of the hospital’s hopes to become another economic driver in downtown McAlester. The McAlester Regional Health Center recently acquired the Million Building McAlester, with announced plans to primarily use it as a storage facility. The hospital plans to maintain the retail shops in the building, according to Keith. Another goal is to also place the Southeast Clinic Surgical Art facility — a reference to cosmetic or plastic surgery — in the downtown area. In addition, plans are underway for an urgent care

facility at the site of the proposed new highway retail center at the intersection of U.S. Highway 69 and Fourteenth Street in McAlester. Recent changes at the McAlester hospital include the addition of the new 10,0000 square foot Veterans Administration Clinic on the MRHC grounds. The facility opened on Nov. 13 and held its grand opening in January. The VA Clinic is open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on
Monday through Friday. It’s designed to serve as the primary service area for qualified veterans from Pittsburg, Latimer, Hughes, Atoka, Coal and Pushmataha counties. Plans are also moving forward for construction of the new cancer center at the hospital, which will be partially funded with a sales tax approved by voters in the city of McAlester. However, that won’t pay the entire costs of the facility, so a campaign is expected to ramp-up soon

with the goal of gaining additional funds for the project. MRHC is also expanding its parking lot, with the addition of 220 new parking spaces on the north side of the hospital grounds. That can help accommodate parking at the hospital’s new Emergency Department, as well as overflow parking related to other parts of the facility. The hospital is also touting its Orthopedic and Sports Medicine program — a program that has generated a lot of interest. Certified Sports Trainer Mike Baker is working with MRHC in the sports medicine area, said Plunkett. The program came about as a result of the hospital seeing different patients with sports injuries, especially from schools in the area. “We were seeing different injuries from the basketball court and the football field,” Plunkett said. He said Baker is already working with 13 area schools and hopes to reach more in the future. One of the biggest changes for MRHC over the past year has been the opening of the hospital’s new $ 12 million Emergency Department — a vast improvement over the previous facility. “Our old emergency room had 3,400 square feet,”

Plunkett said. “The new one has well over 20,000 square feet.” The increased space has vastly improved the hospital’s capability to treat patients in a timely manner. “We can treat up to 60,000 patients annually,” Plunkett said. Those seeking treatment, as well as their friends and family members, will hopefully benefit from the changes. The ER was designed with the idea of allowing the hospital to see more patients and to get them in and out at a faster rate than before. “It should increase our reputation and the customer-service experience,” Plunkett said. He noted that the hospital was able to pay for the expansion without seeking any new sales tax from the city of McAlester. MRHC continues to remain involved with the community on a number of levels. The facility conducted four blood drives. During those events, approximately 200 donors from MRHS aided in donating

Constantly seeking to improve, the hospital implemented new services for the hospital in the areas of pediatrics, cosmetic and plastic surgery, neurology and urology, along with Eufaula Urgent Care and the Eufaula Imaging Center. Over the past year, the hospital was involved in four health fairs, including the Community Health Fair attended by more than 800 individuals.
