3 WELCOME FROM McALLEN 2
Dear Games of Texas Participant, Welcome to McAllen, Texas! The McAllen City Commission and I are proud to welcome competitors and your fans alike to the 2017 Summer Games of Texas, coordinated through the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF). Our city is ready to once again roll out the red carpet for competitors and fans alike during your time here in our community of the Rio Grande Valley. Thank you for coming down to McAllen to make this year’s TAAF Games of Texas, the best yet. Your dedication and discipline to your sport should be commended and whether you win or lose, by competing in these games, you are already a winner. But just in case, good luck. Most importantly, have fun and be safe. You are role models for athletes young and old, in your hometown, in ours and throughout the state of Texas. While here, take advantage of all that McAllen has to offer, including world class shopping, top-notch restaurants, one-of-a-kind destinations and fun attractions for the whole family, all eager to “show off” for visitors. Take a stroll at the International Museum of Art and Science or the Museum of South Texas History. This area of the state is known for its tropical environment so enjoy the outdoors at Quinta Mazatlán World Birding Center, at our many parks, or even further down south at the beach. Top-notch restaurants and shopping can be found at the McAllen Convention Center District, as well as in many other areas throughout the city. Feel free to look us up online or visit our social media pages for a quick glance at what McAllen is all about. I encourage you to enjoy the Games as we continue to promote health and fitness in our local area. We thank you for visiting; we know you will be delighted! Sincerely,
James Darling Mayor City of McAllen

Summer 2017
Dear Games of Texas Participant: On behalf of the United States Olympic Committee, I am pleased to welcome you to the 2017 TAAF Games of Texas. Since its inception, this festival has not only raised awareness of Olympic sports, but also acted as a vehicle to motivate positive lifestyle choices, inspire value in education and stress the importance of family and community. The State Games are driven by the potential to positively influence young athletes, the leaders of tomorrow. Many of our Olympians and Paralympians were inspired to become elite athletes because of their participation in community-based programs such as the State Games. These programs play an integral role in the development of the athletic skills and the values of many young men and women who dream of representing Team USA in future Olympic and Paralympic Games. The USOC wishes success to all competitors. The sportsmanship, fair play and respect that you demonstrate during the State Games can set the course for your life’s achievements. Your hard work and dedication prove you are already on the path toward becoming a champion both in sport and life. Best regards,
Scott A. Blackmun Chief Executive Officer
