YOUTH CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Ballet - Become a young ballerina! Learn basic ballet steps and terms in a creative, fun environment. Cheerleading - Encouraging children to stay active and healthy in a fun manner, your child will learn cheerleading techniques such as peers, proper jumps, arm motions, splits, stunts and awesome dances. Drawing - Learn how to use pencils and draw different shapes and figures. In this class you will learn the basics of sketching and shading as well as painting. Come learn to make a masterpiece! Folklorico - Learn the many different styles of traditional Mexican dance and choreography. Football Skills & Drills - An introduction to the basic fundamentals of the game of football. Use this class as a stepping-stone to boost your child’s interest in this popular sport. Hands-on-Art - Get your hands dirty with paint, glitter and glue. Sketching to sewing! Jazz - Smile, shake & strut! Enjoy an intro to dance steps with a variety of music from across the decades. Kick-Line - Be like a Rockette and learn high kicks to music and how to dance synchronized in a line. Mat-cercise - Participants will learn basic tumbling skills including forward rolls, tiny toe touches and proper stretching. Mini-Masterpieces - Work with a variety of materials from paint to beads & create your own art by hand. Modeling - Learn the basics of poise and etiquette with affordable and fashionable outfits that are perfect for the upcoming holidays. Learn to make a fashionable statement with what you have in your closet! Painting - Learn to paint with different art media to create a masterpiece. Continue to learn and understand concepts of depth perspective and color. Performing Folklorico - This class is for the trained Folklorico dancer! Learn advanced choreography and routines to be performed at public events. Registration available only at Las Palmas CC due to

The Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of programs for adults age 50 and over on a daily basis at all three Board/Tables Games (18+) community centers. Programs are conducted by volunteers. Some fees are charged for class supplies. Contact each center Daily Nutrition Program for more information. CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Arts & Crafts: Join the fun and exciting Senior Sewing Class. Learn to stitch, sew and create beautiful blankets and throws in this exciting class. Also, join the fun in the Senior Crochet Class where you will learn basic crochet knots and loops. Basic Computers: Become computer literate with our step-by-step computer classes. Space is limited! Billiards: For fun or competition, relax and play all variations of billiards. Bingo/Chalupa: Come play daily games of bingo or chalupa. Board Games/Tables Games: Join in the leisure play of a variety of board or card games from Chess to Dominoes to Bridge. For ages 18 & up! Club Estambre: Come and learn new ideas and styles of knitting. With single or double needles making a scarf was never so fun. Ceramics: Learn to make your own ceramic pieces from scratch. Paint your ceramics and learn new techniques from our instructors. Conjunto Las Palmas: A great outlet for any registered Senior Participant that knows music. The Senior Conjunto Band plays at Senior Birthday parties here at the community center. Participants must bring their own musical instruments. Conjunto singers welcome! Daily Nutrition Program: The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department and Amigos Del Valle are proud to offer a nutrition program for registered participants 60 and over. Come & enjoy a great lunch with your friends while also receiving proper nutrition. Healthier You: Join us for our Healthier You to discuss health issues, as well as participating in games and activities for the entire family. Parents, bring your kids. Kids, bring your parents. Open to all community members. Line Dancing: Join the group to do some kickin’ and stompin’ to a variety of music. Learn new line dances to keep you active, healthy & in good spirits. Poker: Sit down at the table for a friendly game of Texas Hold ‘Em poker. Played weekly, the game may change, but the goal is to accumulate points to be the series grand champion at the conclusion of the session. Senior Aerobics/Stretch: Work out daily with your friends. Sessions focus on stretching & movement to assist with keeping fit for life. Senior Dance Fitness: Freestyle dance class for registered Senior Participants. Enjoy the latest in Tejano, 50’s, Salsa, and Mexican music. This class also serves as a fun low impact class that allows for you to go at your own pace. Senior Fitness: Do you want to get in shape and be flexible, but don’t like all the jumping around? Then this is the class for you! Thirty minutes of stretching and light movement with or without weights will help keep you fit, limber and active for years. Silver Note Choir: A perfect outlet for senior singers! Join the fun and become part of this musical group. The choir will sing in the monthly Senior Birthday parties at the center and other special events. Most songs sung in English. Tai-Chi/Yoga: Unite your mind, body and spirit. Increase flexibility and relieve tension through meditation & physical discipline. Walking Club: Get fit while you walk with friends at each community center. DANCE OF THE MONTH Held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, come and dance to the sounds of a live Spanish band where you can groove with new friends from throughout the Valley. Quinta Mazatlan offers you enjoyment, education, camaraderie and an introduction to the natural and cultural history of the Valley – both past and present. Guests will enjoy the interpretive presentations including the history of the families of Quinta Mazatlan, flora and fauna of South Texas and more. Plus don’t forget to visit the Art Gallery and Gift Store!

McALLEN GREAT OUTDOORS NATURE SPEAKER SERIES The speaker series is designed to be both educational and inspirational. A wide range of speakers and programs are featured from October 2011 to April 2012. Subjects will range from organic cooking, painting in nature, designing a wildscape in your backyard, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies, book signings and so much more DATE: Thursdays from October 2011 to April 2012 TIME: 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. FEE: $2.00 adults, $1.00 Seniors and children (free with membership) Come early and walk the trails and visit the art gallery and gift store! The adobe home was built in the 1930’s and is recognized as one of the largest adobe homes in the state of Texas. Discover the immense variety of native plants and animals of the Rio Grande Valley Thornforest. GARDEN OF EATIN’ TOUR Visitors will enjoy an hour long outdoor guided tour focusing on the edible, medicinal aspects of the plants, trees, berries, and blossoms found in our courtyard, gardens and native Thornforest. PARK CLEAN UP DAY Nurture Nature each month by donating your time to help keep our native Thornforest beautiful. Plant trees and shrubs, remove invasive plant species, assist with watering, mulching, and pruning. Volunteer t-shirts and snacks are provided to all who join! Individuals just show up! TEEN PROGRAMS Quinta Mazatlan provides a variety of teen–oriented nature programs and activities designed for youth passionate about the natural world and making discoveries. Programs are intended to feed the mind, affirm individual strengths and bring forth environmental stewardship. Volunteer opportunities are also available for teens in need of service learning hours. Bring your own GPS unit or borrow one of ours! Digital Photography Workshop Explore the natural world behind a lens as you learn to take winning snapshots of local wildlife in action! candlelight posada A citywide holiday celebration featuring traditional Mexican posada, a parade and live nativity. Other activities include Christmas entertainment, caroling, food booths, and the annual lighting of the “City Christmas Tree”. Live performances will take place on three stages (Main Stage, Teen Town, Little Town) on both Friday and Saturday nights. The lighted parade begins its route at the corner of Main Street and Houston Avenue at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night. REFUNDS/TRANSFERS - We constantly strive to provide the highest quality recreation programs. If, for any reason, you are not completely satisfied with a class or activity, please tell us so we can respond to your concerns. In addition to using your feedback to help us improve, for nearly all of our programs, we will arrange one of the following: TRANSFERS between classes will be allowed only prior to the third class meeting, at no charge. After the third class meeting, transfers may be made, pending space availability, with a charge of $5 per class. REFUNDS for classes will be allowed only prior to the third class meeting and will carry a $5 fee per class. Requests for transfers, credits, and refunds must be in writing. A refund check will be mailed within 30 days following a written request. RETURNED CHECK POLICY - A $25 service charge will be assessed for all returned checks, and students will be removed from classes until finances are settled. MEDICAL POLICY - The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department will not prohibit any person from participating in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or other participants in the activity. A participant who has been notified by a qualified medical professional that he/she has a medical condition that is likely to cause injury to themselves or other participants, is obligated to inform the Parks and Recreation Department, at the time of registration, of the condition and willingly withdraw from the program or activity if requested by the Department. It is recommended that all participants receive medical authorization before participating in these programs.
