The Department strives to: Improve the quality of life through the provision of well-balanced, high-quality recreation programs for the residents of McAllen to enjoy during their leisure time. Facilitate wholesome and constructive programs with a measurable value to the community. Provide attractive and well-maintained major parks and recreation facilities in each sector of the city. These facilities should be within a reasonable distance of every surrounding neighborhood and offer safe opportunities for athletic competition, facility gatherings, and other passive and active recreation activities. Promote environmental conservation, eco and cultural tourism and socially oriented special events.

INCLUSIVE PROGRAMS The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation welcomes the opportunity to accommodate our patrons with special needs so that full participation in leisure and recreation programs may be enjoyed by all. Reasonable modifications will be assessed on a caseby-case basis taking the appropriate steps to ensuring a safe and enjoyable leisure experience. Patrons with special needs are encouraged to bring a companion with them for assistance at no extra charge in lieu of an additional staff member. The initial request for accommodation should be made on the program registration form. MEDICAL POLICY The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department will not prohibit any person from participating in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or other participants in the activity. A participant who has been notified by a qualified medical professional that he/she has a medical condition that is likely to cause injury to themselves or other participants, is obligated to inform the Parks and Recreation Department, at the time of registration, of the condition and willingly withdraw from the program or activity if requested by the Department. It is recommended that all participants receive medical authorization before participating in these programs.


KIDZ NIGHT OUT Register your kids and leave them with us for a fun-filled Friday night! Enjoy board games and card games in our Game Room, sit back and enjoy a movie and popcorn in our Movie Room, check out the Craft Room for some colorful activities, or make your way to the gym and enjoy some awesome indoor sports! All activities will be supervised by our experienced staff. Pizza dinner and drinks are included. AMIGOS DEL VALLE Participating seniors (60 & Over) are able to partake in a free lunch provided by Amigos Del Valle. ADV is recognized as the largest and most enduring non-profit resource senior service, Elderly Supportive Housing service and home meal delivery service provider of the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENT To engage men and women age 50 and better in meaningful volunteer service that strengthens the well- being of both self and community. Volunteer Assignments Include: Assisting with serving coffee daily, collecting daily donation during lunch, assisting custodian staff with cleaning of tables, class instructors, prepare meals on wheels’ home delivery trays, assist with serving meals to center participants.

SENIOR TRIPS An essential part of senior programming are monthly field trips. Field trips allow our participants to experience new and existing activities throughout the valley. Trips schedule for throughout the year include South Padre Island, Gladys’s Porter Zoo, McAllen Nature Center, Quinta Mazatlán, Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show, Bentsen State Park, La Plaza Mall and many more.

SENIOR DANCE Every third Wednesday of the month, Las Palmas Community Center hosts the monthly senior dance which features live music, raffle prizes and concession items. Community participants 50 and over are welcomed to attend and dance the afternoon away from 1-3:30 p.m. the fee to enter is $1.50.

Learn basic water adjustment skills with an emphasis on play to prepare children for comfort in the water for Youth Level 1 & 2. Designed to teach swimmer independence with initial play in the wading pool and progression to the main pool when students are ready.

On the first day of each session, the instructors will assess the participant’s swimming ability by performing a skills test. Based on the test, the instructor will determine the participants class level.

LEVEL 1 & 2 Swimmers will start to learn basic water exploration and swimming skills. This class covers submersion under the water, floating & gliding on front & back, rhythmic breathing, safety skills, and front & back crawls at a beginner level. LEVEL 3 Designed to build upon skills learned during previous levels. The back crawl will be expanded and the front crawl will be perfected. Swimmers will also learn how to tread water. LEVEL 4 Designed to build upon the skills mastered at Level 3. Swimmers will develop endurance to swim greater distances. Breaststroke and sidestroke are also taught.

LIFEGUARDING Training

Tentative Time Schedule

Train to become a certified American Red Cross lifeguard and learn valuable skills including injury prevention, facility safety, patron surveillance, emergency preparation, rescue skills, victim assessment, first aid, CPR/AED and care for head, neck and spinal injuries. PREREQUISITE: Participant must be able to swim 300 yards continuously, complete a timed retrieval of a 10lb object from a depth of 7ft.-10ft., tread water with no hands for 2 minutes in deep water. In the event a participant fails to complete the prerequisite test, he/she may request a refund minus the non-refundable fee or transfer to another Lifeguard Training Session at no additional cost. Transfers will only be allowed once per participant for free. Participants 17 and under MUST be accompanied by an adult during the prerequisite activities. Participants must be present for pre-requisite testing and all four class days. Pre-Requisite: Will take place on first day of class Thursday at 5pm. McSPORTS

As part of the current After school Program, a new sports development program will implement sport skills and technique activities while also focusing on healthy nutrition and reinforcing positive character traits. Every five weeks, all after school registered program participants will focus on learning a different sport. Sports include football, kickball, volleyball, floor hockey, baseball and track. A maximum of 15 students per grade level (2nd/3rd - 4th/5th) will be eligible to compete in a fun team tournament to showcase all their new skills. The student teams will compete during the tournament against other after school registered sites at the end of the five-week session. All the McSports after school coaches receive quality training in each individual sport and are committed to providing a safe and fun learning environment.
