2 MISSION STATEMENT The Department strives to: Improve the quality of life through the provision of well-balanced, high-quality recreation programs for the residents of McAllen to enjoy during their leisure time. Facilitate wholesome and constructive programs with a measurable value to the community. Provide attractive and well-maintained major parks and recreation facilities in each sector of the city. These facilities should be within a reasonable distance of every surrounding neighborhood and offer safe opportunities for athletic competition, facility gatherings, and other passive and active recreation activities. Promote environmental conservation, eco and cultural tourism and socially oriented special events.

REFUNDS & TRANSFERS
We constantly strive to provide you with the highest quality recreation programs. If, for any reason, you are not completely satisfied with a class or activity, please tell us so we can respond to your concerns. In addition to using your feedback to help us improve, for nearly all of our programs, we will arrange one of the following: TRANSFERS between classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting, at no charge. After the second class meeting, transfers may be made, pending space availability, with a charge of $5 per class. REFUNDS for classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting and will carry a $10 fee per class. Refunds may take 30 to 60 days to process.

Requests for transfers and refunds must be in writing. Some of our programs, such as adult leagues, contract programs and facility rentals, have different, specific policies which apply. The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department retains the privilege of canceling any scheduled activity that fails to generate minimum interest.

WALK IN REGISTRATION IS NOT ACCEPTED AT THE PARKS AND RECREATION ADMINISTRATION OFFICE LOCATED ON WARE RD. Registration is not accepted at program sites. Advance registration required. Participants may be asked for a proof of residency.
ONLINE REGISTRATION
Visit https://webtrac.mcallen.net to register online. You must create a username and password, as well as enter all pertinent household information before the website will allow you to register online. Online forms of payment include Visa and Mastercard. Please call the administration office at 956-6813333 if you need assistance.
RETURNED CHECK POLICY
A $20 service charge will be assessed for all returned checks, and students will be removed from classes until finances are settled.
The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department will not prohibit any person from participating in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or other participants in the activity. A participant who has been notified by a qualified medical professional that he/she has a medical condition that is likely to cause injury to themselves or other participants, is obligated to inform the Parks and Recreation Department, at the time of registration, of the condition and willingly withdraw from the program or activity if requested by the Department. It is recommended that all participants receive medical authorization before participating in these programs.

The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation welcomes the opportunity to accommodate our patrons with special needs so that full participation in leisure and recreation programs may be enjoyed by all. Reasonable modifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis taking the appropriate steps to ensuring a safe and enjoyable leisure experience. Patrons with special needs are encouraged to bring a companion with them for assistance at no extra charge in lieu of an additional staff member. The initial request for accommodation should be made on the program registration form.

Acoustic Guitar - Learn proper techniques to play, including strumming and chords. Acoustic guitar required. All-Star Sports - Enjoy combination of different sports played each week. Ballet - Introduction to the graceful art form of ballet. Learn positions, balance and coordination. Baseball/Softball Skills - Jump start your baseball season learning skills learning and improving on pitching, throwing, and fielding. Cheer - Introduction to cheer skills and techniques. Include cheer, jumps and dances. Drawing - Learn a variety of basic drawing skills. Includes sketching figures and shapes. Floor Hockey - Intro to indoor floor hockey learn stick handling, safety, passing and shooting. Folklorico - Learn the many different styles of traditional Mexican dance and choreography. Hands on Art - Get creative and get your hands busy with paint, glitter and glue and create fun seasonal crafts. Indoor Tennis - This class will introduce players to the basics of tennis, emphasizing on fun activities while highlighting hand-eye coordination and tracking skill development. Just Dance - It’s a mix of a little Hip Hop, Jazz and Free Style dance techniques. Painting - Join creative thinkers and learn how to paint different shapes and figures. Learn how paint can bring dimension to your basic art class. SNAG Golf - Starting New at Golf (SNAG) is an exciting way for beginners to learn how to play golf. Modified equipment and simplified terminology will teach the participants the fundamentals of golf. Tumbling - Learn basic tumbling skills from forward rolls, cartwheels and basic back handsprings. The Outdoor Challenge Course offers programs designed to address the needs of your group from scouts, school, community organizations and corporate. Our Team Building & Leadership Development program activities are the foundation for building effective teamwork. Throughout the program, certified facilitators guide groups through a sequence of events that address problem solving initiatives, and low rope course elements. LEARN TO SWIM 13 GUS & GOLDIE LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM Join Gus & Goldie to learn important water safety skills. Each participant will receive an official Gus & Goldie t-shirt and certificate of achievement. Advance registration is required and space is limited. PARENT & BABY INFANT (6-18 MONTHS) Designed to teach parents how to work safely and effectively with their infant to help develop water adjustment skills and learn to have fun in the water. One parent per child is allowed in the water at a time. Swim diapers and swim suits are necessary for infants. No diapers or disposable swim diapers are allowed. PARENT & BABY TODDLER (18-48 MONTHS) Reinforces skills learned in the infant level class and progresses to learn more advanced skills age appropriate for a toddler. ADVANCED PRE-SCHOOL (4-5 YEARS) The advanced preschool is like the preschool class, but will have students start to work on level 1 material at an earlier age. Students must have taken the preschool class to enroll. YOUTH LEVEL 1 & 2 (6-13 YEARS) Swimmers will start to learn basic water exploration and swimming skills. This class covers submersion under the water, floating & gliding on front & back, rhythmic breathing, safety skills, and front & back crawls at a beginner level. YOUTH LEVEL 3 (6-13 YEARS) Designed to build upon skills learned at Levels 1 & 2. The back crawl will be expanded and the front crawl will be perfected. Students will also learn to tread water. YOUTH LEVEL 4 (6-13 YEARS) Designed to build upon the skills mastered at Level 3. Students develop more endurance to swim greater distances. Breaststroke and sidestroke are also taught. LIFEGUARD TRAINING
Train to become a certified American Red Cross lifeguard and learn valuable skills including injury prevention, facility safety , patron surveillance, emergency preparation, rescue skills, victim assessment, First Aid, CPR/AED and care for head, neck and spinal injuries.
PREREQUISITE: Participant must be able to swim 300 yards continuously, complete a timed retrieval of a 10lb object from a depth of 6 ft., tread water with no hands for 2 minutes in deep water. In the event a participant fails to complete the prerequisite test, he/she may request a refund of half the registration fee or request to transfer to a later training course date.
