Facilitate wholesome and constructive programs with a measurable value to the community. Provide attractive and well-maintained major parks and recreation facilities in each sector of the city. These facilities should be within a reasonable distance of every surrounding neighborhood and offer safe opportunities for athletic competition, facility gatherings, and other passive and active recreation activities. A $20 service charge will be assessed for all returned checks and students will be removed from classes until payment has been settled.

We constantly strive to provide you with the highest quality recreation programs. If, for any reason, you are not completely satisfied with a class or activity, please tell us so we can respond to your concerns. In addition to using your feedback to help us improve our programs, we will arrange one of the following. TRANSFERS between classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting, at no charge. After the second class meeting, transfers may be made, pending space availability, with a charge of $5 per class.

The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department retains the privilege of canceling any scheduled activity that fails to generate minimum interest.
INCLUSION PROCESS
The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation welcomes the opportunity to accommodate our patrons with special needs so that full participation in leisure and recreation programs may be enjoyed by all. Reasonable modifications will be assessed on a caseby-case basis taking the appropriate steps to ensuring a safe and enjoyable leisure experience. Patrons with special needs are encouraged to bring a companion with them for assistance at no extra charge in lieu of an additional staff member. The initial request for accommodation should be made on the program registration form.
MEDICAL POLICY
The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department will not prohibit any person from participating in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or other participants in the activity. A participant who has been notified by a qualified medical professional that he/she has a medical condition that is likely to cause injury to themselves or other participants, is obligated to inform the Parks and Recreation Department, at the time of registration, of
the condition and willingly withdraw from the program or activity if requested by the Department. It is recommended that all participants receive medical authorization before participating in these programs.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Acoustic Guitar - Learn proper techniques to play, including strumming and chords. Participant is required to provide acoustic guitar. Archery - Series of classes concentrates on range and safety rules, range courtesy, fundamentals of archery, and is taught using compound equipment. (Bows, arrows, and targets will be provided). Arts & Crafts - Use a variety of art media to create your very own masterpiece. Learn basic perspectives of color and dimension. Ballet (Twinkle Toes) - Introduction to the graceful art form of ballet. Learn positions, balance and coordination. Baseball/Softball Skills - Start your baseball season by learning and improving basic skills such as pitching, throwing, and fielding. Activity takes place indoors and outdoors. Dance & Cheer - Introduction to cheer and dance skills. Learn cheer, jump and dance techniques. Fitness Kids - Get your heart and body in shape with fun exercise using music as a motivation! Kids in the Kitchen - Become a chef! Experience educational nutrition lectures, food preparation and kitchen safety. Paint & Draw - Work with a variety of materials from paint to beads and create your own art by hand. Piano Skills - An introduction to playing the piano, reading music, fundamentals and more. A great introduction to the world of music. Soccer Skills - Basic introduction to skills and techniques including running, dribbling and kicking. Tennis shoes required. Activity takes place indoors and outdoors. Speed & Fitness Camp - Improve your speed and fitness levels to help you excel in a variety of sports. Tae Kwon Do - Learn the basic of the martial arts in a safe and responsible atmosphere. Tumbling - Learn basic tumbling skills from forward rolls, cartwheels and basic back handsprings. As part of the current After School Program, a new sports development program will implement sport skills and technique activities while also focusing on healthy nutrition and reinforcing positive character traits. Every three weeks, all registered program participants will focus on learning a different sport. Sports include football, kickball, volleyball, floor hockey, baseball and track. A maximum of 12 students per grade level (2nd/3rd - 4th/5th) will be eligible to compete in a fun team tournament to showcase all of their new skills. The student teams will compete during the tournament against other after school sites at the end of the three-week session. All of the McSports after school coaches receive quality training in each individual sport and are committed to providing a safe and fun learning environment. He holds an Associate Degree in Nursing from South Texas College. He has participated in recreational and advanced volleyball teams (NAGVA & USAV). He also has volunteered as a youth volleyball coach since 2003 in multiple organizations including Boys and Girls Club, Parks and Recreation, and RGV Sports. He is a member and currently certified to officiate in both TASO and USA Volleyball organizations. His goal is to develop and promote fun, safe and wholesome environment so that players and officials can develop team work through positive attitude and competitive spirit while representing their teams and organizations. GUS & GOLDIE LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM Join Gus & Goldie to learn important water safety skills. Each participant will receive an official Gus & Goldie t-shirt and certificate of achievement. Advance registration is required and space is limited. PARENT & BABY INFANT (6-18 MONTHS) Designed to teach parents how to work safely and effectively with their infant to help develop water adjustment skills and learn to have fun in the water. One parent per child is allowed in the water at a time. Swim diapers and swim suits are necessary for infants. No diapers or disposable swim diapers are allowed. PARENT & BABY TODDLER(18-48 MONTHS) Reinforces skills learned in the infant level class and progresses to learn more advanced skills age appropriate for a toddler. PRE-SCHOOL (4-5 YEARS) Learn basic water adjustment skills with an emphasis on play to prepare children for comfort in the water for Level 1 & 2. ADVANCED PRE-SCHOOL (4-5 YEARS) The advanced preschool is like the preschool class, but will have students start to work on level 1 material at an earlier age. Students must have taken the preschool class to enroll. YOUTH LEVEL 1 & 2 (6-13 YEARS) Swimmers will start to learn basic water exploration and swimming skills. This class covers submersion under the water, floating & gliding on front & back, rhythmic breathing, safety skills, and front & back crawls at a beginner level. YOUTH LEVEL 3 (6-13 YEARS) Designed to build upon skills learned at Levels 1 & 2. The back crawl will be expanded and the front crawl will be perfected. Students will also learn to tread water. YOUTH LEVEL 4 (6-13 YEARS) Designed to build upon the skills mastered at Level 3. Students develop more endurance to swim greater distances. Breaststroke and sidestroke are also taught. ADULT & TEEN For adults/teens who either want to overcome their fear of the water or for adults that are comfortable in the water, but would like to improve their strokes.

Train to become a certified American Red Cross lifeguard and learn valuable skills including injury prevention, facility safety , patron surveillance, emergency preparation, rescue skills, victim assessment, First Aid, CPR/AED and care for head, neck and spinal injuries. PREREQUISITE: Participant must be able to swim 300 yards continuously, complete a timed retrieval of a 10lb object from a depth of 6 ft., tread water with no hands for 2 minutes in deep water. In the event a participant fails to complete the prerequisite test, he/she may request a refund of half the registration fee or request to transfer to a later training course date. Participants 18 and under MUST be accompanied by an adult during the prerequisite activities. Participants must be present for all four class days.

FOREST SCULPTURE TRAIL
Visit our one-of-a-kind outdoor sculpture trail and develop an appreciation for the vast variety of creatures that call our region home. At each turn of a trail, there’s a new creature to discover.

HISTORY TOUR
Bring your friends and tour one of the largest adobe homes in the state of Texas. Hear about the tales of the families that built and lived at Quinta Mazatlan for a total of 60 years before the City of McAllen purchased the estate and opened it in 2006 as a mansion with a mission.

Any given day in the Lower Rio Grande Valley can host a vast diversity of wildlife. Ranging from temperate to tropical, the local community of birds, butterflies, reptiles, amphibians, and plants found here make the Valley unique. Participants will learn the basics of being a naturalist, with a focus on identification and natural histories of the fauna and flora found in the thorn forest of Quinta Mazatlan.

Take the Low Ropes challenge!
