These facilities should be within a reasonable distance of every surrounding neighborhood and offer safe opportunities for athletic competition, facility gatherings, and other passive and active recreation activities. RETURNED CHECK POLICY
A $20 service charge will be assessed for all returned checks, and students will be removed from classes until finances are settled.
REFUNDS & TRANSFERS
We constantly strive to provide you with the highest quality recreation programs. If, for any reason, you are not completely satisfied with a class or activity, please tell us so we can respond to your concerns. In addition to using your feedback to help us improve our programs, we will arrange one of the following. TRANSFERS between classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting, at no charge. After the second class meeting, transfers may be made, pending space availability, with a charge of $5 per class. REFUNDS for classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting and will carry a $10 fee per class. Refunds will take 30 to 60 days to process. Requests for transfers and refunds must be in writing. Some of our programs, such as adult leagues, contract programs and facility rentals, have different, specific policies which apply. The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department retains the privilege of canceling any scheduled activity that fails to generate minimum interest.
MEDICAL POLICY
The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department will not prohibit any person from participating in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or other participants in the activity. A participant who has been notified by a qualified medical professional that he/she has a medical condition that is likely to cause injury to themselves or other participants, is obligated to inform the Parks and Recreation Department, at the time of registration, of the condition and willingly withdraw from the program or activity if requested by the Department. It is recommended that all participants receive medical authorization before participating in these programs.
INCLUSION PROCESS
The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation welcomes the opportunity to accommodate our patrons with special needs so that full participation in leisure and recreation programs may be enjoyed by all. Reasonable modifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis taking the appropriate steps to ensuring a safe and enjoyable leisure experience. Patrons with special needs are encouraged to bring a companion with them for assistance at no extra charge in lieu of an additional staff member. The initial request for accommodation should be made on the program registration form.

Join a staff birder for a leisurely stroll through the nature trails - all skill levels are invited! Look at birds, butterflies, and whatever else happens along the path! The Rio Grande Valley is one of the best birding locations in the entire country. To date, 156 species of birds have been seen on the site! Loaner binoculars are available free of charge and no experience is necessary. Bird & Nature Walks are held rain or shine.

8 TAAF TEAM SPORTS T.A.A.F. TEAM PROGRAMS
McAllen Parks and Recreation is proud to offer Texas Amateur Athletics Federation (T.A.A.F.) programs. Young athletes will compete against other individuals and teams from across the Rio Grande Valley and the state in various sports including track & field, golf, swimming and tennis. Teams will attend local tournaments and meets, earning the opportunity to compete at the regional level. Qualifying athletes will earn a chance to compete in the Games of Texas, a week-long Olympic style competition featuring a variety of sports. The 2015 Games of Texas will be held July 30 to August 2 in College Station, Texas. Experienced athletes are invited to join Team McAllen. A complete schedule of meets and competitions will be provided once classes begin. Individual T.A.A.F. membership is included in the class fee. Other fees including individual meet fees are the responsibility of the participant.

On the first day of each session, the instructors will assess the participant’s swimming ability by performing a skills test. Based on the test, the instructor will determine the participants class level. YOUTH Level 1 & 2 (6-13 years) Swimmers will start to learn basic water exploration and swimming skills. This class covers submersion under the water, floating & gliding on front & back, rhythmic breathing, safety skills, and front & back crawls at a beginner level. YOUTH Level 3 (6-13 years) Designed to build upon skills learned at Levels 1 & 2. The back crawl will be expanded and the front crawl will be perfected. Students will also learn to tread water. YOUTH Level 4 (6-13 years) Designed to build upon the skills mastered at Level 3. Students develop more endurance to swim greater distances. Breaststroke and sidestroke are also taught. Adult & Teen For adults/teens who either want to overcome their fear of the water or for adults that are comfortable in the water, but would like to improve their strokes.
McALLEN MAKOS SWIM TEAM

TAAF SWIM TEAM
Compete in meets against swimmers from across the Rio Grande Valley throughout the summer. Team members must be able to swim 50 yards comfortably and have no fear of the water. Swimmers cannot have participated in U.S. Swim Meets as of January 1, 2015.

Board shorts with drawstrings are allowed. Swim diapers or swimming suits are necessary for infants. No diapers or disposable swim diapers allowed. Lifeguard TRAINING
Interested in a great job or challenging career as a professional lifeguard? Train to become a certified American Red Cross lifeguard and learn valuable skills including injury prevention, facility safety, patron surveillance, emergency preparation, rescue skills, victim assessment, First Aid, CPR/AED and care for head, neck and spinal injuries. Parent/Guardian signature required at time of registration for participants age 17 and under. CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Acoustic Guitar - Learn proper techniques to play, including strumming and chords. Participant is required to provide acoustic guitar. Ballet - Introduction to the graceful art form of ballet. Learn positions, balance and coordination. Beginner Tennis - An introduction to the sport of tennis learning skills and techniques to serve and score. Cheer - Introduction to cheer skills and techniques. Include cheer, jumps and dances. Folklorico - Learn the many different styles of traditional Mexican dance and choreography. Football Skills - Learn basic football skills including throwing, kicking, blocking and punting. Hands on Art - Get creative and get your hands busy with paint, glitter and glue and create fun seasonal crafts. Just Dance - It’s a mix of a little Hip Hop, Jazz and Free Style dance techniques. Mini Masterpieces - Work with a variety of materials from paint to beads and create your own art by hand. Painting & Drawing - Use a variety of art media to create your very own masterpiece. Learn basic perspectives of color and dimension. Soccer Skills - Basic introduction to skills and techniques including running, dribbling and kicking. Tennis shoes required.
