2 REGISTRATION MISSION STATEMENT The Department strives to: Improve the quality of life through the provision of well-balanced, high-quality recreation programs for the residents of McAllen to enjoy during their leisure time. Facilitate wholesome and constructive programs with a measurable value to the community. Provide attractive and well-maintained major parks and recreation facilities in each sector of the city. These facilities should be within a reasonable distance of every surrounding neighborhood and offer safe opportunities for athletic competition, facility gatherings, and other passive and active recreation activities. Promote environmental conservation, eco and cultural tourism and socially oriented special events.

ONLINE REGISTRATION

Visit https://webtrac.mcallen.net to register online. You must create a username and password, as well as enter all pertinent household information before the website will allow you to register online. Online forms of payment accepted include Visa and Mastercard. Please call the administration office at (956) 681-3333 if you need assistance.

RETURNED CHECK POLICY

A $20 service charge will be assessed for all returned checks, and students will be removed from classes until finances are settled.

REFUNDS & TRANSFERS

We constantly strive to provide you with the highest quality recreation programs. If, for any reason, you are not completely satisfied with a class or activity, please tell us so we can respond to your concerns. In addition to using your feedback to help us improve our programs, we will arrange one of the following. TRANSFERS between classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting, at no charge. After the second class meeting, transfers may be made, pending space availability, with a charge of $5 per class. REFUNDS for classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting and will carry a $10 fee per class. Refunds will take 30 to 60 days to process. Requests for transfers and refunds must be in writing. Some of our programs, such as adult leagues, contract programs and facility rentals, have different, specific policies which apply. The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department retains the privilege of canceling any scheduled activity that fails to generate minimum interest.

MEDICAL POLICY

The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department will not prohibit any person from participating in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or other participants in the activity. A participant who has been notified by a qualified medical professional that he/she has a medical condition that is likely to cause injury to themselves or other participants, is obligated to inform the Parks and Recreation Department, at the time of registration, of the condition and willingly withdraw from the program or activity if requested by the Department. It is recommended that all participants receive medical authorization before participating in these programs.

INCLUSION PROCESS

The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation welcomes the opportunity to accommodate our patrons with special needs so that full participation in leisure and recreation programs may be enjoyed by all. Reasonable modifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis taking the appropriate steps to ensuring a safe and enjoyable leisure experience. Patrons with special needs are encouraged to bring a companion with them for assistance at no extra charge in lieu of an additional staff member. The initial request for accommodation should be made on the program registration form.


LITTLE MISS FOURTH OF JULY PAGEANT

Participants will be judged on an interview, talent and modeling western wear. Registration accepted in person at Palm View Community Center through Wednesday, June 10. MAIN STREET PARADE

Celebrate America’s Independence during the annual Main Street Parade. Patriotic groups, marching bands, entertainers, businesses, civic clubs and organizations are encouraged to be a part of the parade. Parade entry deadline is Friday, June 26. BIRD AND NATURE WALKS

Yoga for Resilience is designed to relieve stress and tension within the body and mind, while the physical movement increases circulation and range of motion in a gentle and gradual way. Personalized instruction and custom poses are available for any body type and skill level.

Join a staff birder for a leisurely stroll through the nature trails - all skill levels are invited! Look at birds, butterflies, and whatever else happens along the path! The Rio Grande Valley is one of the best birding locations in the entire country. To date, 156 species of birds have been seen on the site! Loaner binoculars are available free of charge and no experience is necessary. Bird & Nature Walks are held rain or shine.

8 TAAF TEAM SPORTS T.A.A.F. TEAM PROGRAMS

McAllen Parks and Recreation is proud to offer Texas Amateur Athletics Federation (T.A.A.F.) programs. Young athletes will compete against other individuals and teams from across the Rio Grande Valley and the state in various sports including track & field, golf, swimming and tennis. Teams will attend local tournaments and meets, earning the opportunity to compete at the regional level. Qualifying athletes will earn a chance to compete in the Games of Texas, a week-long Olympic style competition featuring a variety of sports. The 2015 Games of Texas will be held July 30 to August 2 in College Station, Texas. Experienced athletes are invited to join Team McAllen. A complete schedule of meets and competitions will be provided once classes begin. Individual T.A.A.F. membership is included in the class fee. Other fees including individual meet fees are the responsibility of the participant.

Swim Team

Experienced golfers will receive specialized instruction to improve their techniques and compete in tournaments across the Rio Grande Valley. Participants must complete a skills test on Monday, June 1.

Participants will receive specialized instruction and compete in meets across the Rio Grande Valley. Qualifications for participation: must be able to swim 50 yards comfortable and have no fear of the water. Team members cannot have participated in the U.S.S swim meets beginning January 1, 2015

Coach Romy Vela from San Antonio’s John Jay High School will conduct this summer’s camp for boys and girls. Participants will receive four days of excellent drills, techniques, practice and competition while having fun. Friday will be tournament day with both age groups meeting at 8:30 a.m. to compete. All campers will receive a T-shirt. The first 100 registered campers will receive a camp basketball.

Calling all future Pro Bowlers! This noncontact camp is a great opportunity to learn tips and techniques from coaches and allows athletes to prepare themselves for the upcoming season. Players should wear workout gear and bring both court and turf shoes. All campers will receive a T-shirt, daily breakfast and lunch.

Players from area high schools are encouraged to form their teams and work on physical development and skills during the summer. SNAG GOLF

This sports class will introduce the entire family to the fundamentals of soccer dribbling, passing, scoring and conditioning. This activity will be played indoors and outdoors, please wear appropriate shoes for running and kicking.

A new way of learning to play the game, snag golf is an exciting and fun way for beginners to learn result how to strike an oversized ball using modified equipment. End of week mini-tournament (including participation ribbons) will demonstrate what the kids have learned.

On the first day of each session, the instructors will assess the participant’s swimming ability by performing a skills test. Based on the test, the instructor will determine the participants class level. YOUTH Level 1 & 2 (6-13 years) Swimmers will start to learn basic water exploration and swimming skills. This class covers submersion under the water, floating & gliding on front & back, rhythmic breathing, safety skills, and front & back crawls at a beginner level. YOUTH Level 3 (6-13 years) Designed to build upon skills learned at Levels 1 & 2. The back crawl will be expanded and the front crawl will be perfected. Students will also learn to tread water. YOUTH Level 4 (6-13 years) Designed to build upon the skills mastered at Level 3. Students develop more endurance to swim greater distances. Breaststroke and sidestroke are also taught. Adult & Teen For adults/teens who either want to overcome their fear of the water or for adults that are comfortable in the water, but would like to improve their strokes.

McALLEN MAKOS SWIM TEAM

Lifeguard TRAINING

Interested in a great job or challenging career as a professional lifeguard? Train to become a certified American Red Cross lifeguard and learn valuable skills including injury prevention, facility safety, patron surveillance, emergency preparation, rescue skills, victim assessment, First Aid, CPR/AED and care for head, neck and spinal injuries. Parent/Guardian signature required at time of registration for participants age 17 and under. CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Acoustic Guitar - Learn proper techniques to play, including strumming and chords. Participant is required to provide acoustic guitar. Ballet - Introduction to the graceful art form of ballet. Learn positions, balance and coordination. Beginner Tennis - An introduction to the sport of tennis learning skills and techniques to serve and score. Cheer - Introduction to cheer skills and techniques. Include cheer, jumps and dances. Folklorico - Learn the many different styles of traditional Mexican dance and choreography. Football Skills - Learn basic football skills including throwing, kicking, blocking and punting. Hands on Art - Get creative and get your hands busy with paint, glitter and glue and create fun seasonal crafts. Just Dance - It’s a mix of a little Hip Hop, Jazz and Free Style dance techniques. Mini Masterpieces - Work with a variety of materials from paint to beads and create your own art by hand. Painting & Drawing - Use a variety of art media to create your very own masterpiece.
