MISSION
The Department strives to: Improve the quality of life through the provision of well-balanced, high-quality recreation programs for the residents of McAllen to enjoy during their leisure time. Facilitate wholesome and constructive programs with a measurable value to the community. Provide attractive and wellmaintained major parks and recreation facilities in each sector of the city. These facilities should be within a reasonable distance of every surrounding neighborhood and offer safe opportunities for athletic competition, facility gatherings, and other passive and active recreation activities. Promote environmental conservation, eco and cultural tourism and socially oriented special events.

REGISTRATION - 2 easy ways to register ONLINE
Online registration is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day at www.mcallenparks.net. An account with USER ID and password is required to access the system. Create your account online. NOTE: By default, newly created household accounts will appear as nonresident until proof of residency is verified. If you have NEVER registered for a McAllen Parks & Recreation program or are new to the area, you will not have a verified account. To verify McAllen residency, bring one of the following items with you to any of the three community centers listed to the right. Acceptable identification includes: • Utility bill for the household such as gas, electric, water or waste removal. • Phone, television, and internet services bill • Lease, tax, or mortgage statement with your name on it • Auto insurance statement
PAYMENT
The McAllen Parks & Recreation Department accepts payment by check, cash, Visa & Mastercard.
RETURNED CHECK POLICY
A $20 service charge will be assessed for all returned checks, and students will be removed from classes until finances are settled.
SATISFACTION GUARANTEE
If, for any reason, you are not completely satisfied with a class or activity, call or visit a community center. In addition to using your feedback to help us improve our programs, we will arrange one of the following. TRANSFERS between classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting, at no charge. After the second class meeting, transfers may be made, pending space availability, with a charge of $5 per class. REFUNDS for classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting and will carry a $10 fee per class. Refunds will take 30 to 60 days to process. Requests for transfers and refunds must be in writing. The satisfaction guarantee does not include, adult leagues, contract programs and facility rentals.
PROGRAM CANCELLATION POLICY
The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department reserves the right to cancel, postpone, or combine classes as necessary. Classes may be cancelled due to low enrollment. Register early to view the best schedule options.

The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation welcomes the opportunity to accommodate our patrons with special needs so that full participation in leisure and recreation programs may be enjoyed by all. Reasonable modifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis taking the appropriate steps to ensuring a safe and enjoyable leisure experience. Patrons with special needs are encouraged to bring a companion with them for assistance at no extra charge in lieu of an additional staff member. The initial request for accommodation should be made on the program registration form.
MEDICAL POLICY
The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department will not prohibit any person from participating in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or other participants in the activity. A participant who has been notified by a qualified medical professional that he/she has a medical condition that is likely to cause injury to themselves or other participants, is obligated to inform the Parks and Recreation Department, at the time of registration, of the condition and willingly withdraw from the program or activity if requested by the Department. It is recommended that all participants receive medical authorization before participating in these programs.

PATRIOTIC PROGRAM
Take an opportunity to reflect and recognize the true meaning of our Independence Day. This unique ceremony will recognize past and present service members and feature a concert from the McAllen Town Band. PLACE: Archer Park Main Stage
MAIN STREET PARADE
Celebrate America’s Independence during the annual Main Street Parade. Patriotic groups, marching bands, entertainers, businesses, civic clubs and organizations are encouraged to be a part of the parade. Parade entry deadline is Friday, June 7. Entry forms are available online at www.mcallenparks.net or at the McAllen Parks and Recreation Office. A $50 fee applies for all commercial entries. For more information call (956) 681-3333.

AMIGOS DEL VALLE Participating seniors (60 & Over) are able to partake in a free lunch provided by Amigos Del Valle. ADV is recognized as the largest and most enduring non-profit resource senior service, Elderly Supportive Housing service and home meal delivery service provider of the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas.
VOLUNTEER PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENT To engage men and women age 50 and better in meaningful volunteer service that strengthens the well- being of both self and community. Volunteer Assignments Include: Assisting with serving coffee daily, collecting daily donation during lunch, assisting custodian staff with cleaning of tables, class instructors, prepare meals on wheels’ home delivery trays, assist with serving meals to center participants.
SENIOR TRIPS An essential part of senior programming are monthly field trips. Field trips allow our participants to experience new and existing activities throughout the valley. Trips schedule for throughout the year include South Padre Island, Gladys Porter Zoo, McAllen Nature Center, Quinta Mazatlán, Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show, Bentsen State Park, La Plaza Mall and many more.
SENIOR DANCE Every third Wednesday of the month, Las Palmas Community Center hosts the monthly senior dance which features live music, raffle prizes and concession items. Community participants 50 and over are welcomed to attend and dance the afternoon away from 1-3:30 p.m. the fee to enter is $1.50.

Show your spirit and come join the best cheer camp around! You will learn many types of cheers, dances, jumps, and chants to make you the best cheerleader ever. By the end of the session, participants will be more confident in cheering and will be able to work as a member of a team. On the last day of camp, show off all you have learned for your family. YOUTH (6 - 13 YEARS)
MUNICIPAL
LEVEL 1 & 2 Swimmers will start to learn basic water exploration and swimming skills. This class covers submersion under the water, floating & gliding on front & back, rhythmic breathing, safety skills, and front & back crawls at a beginner level. LEVEL 3 Designed to build upon skills learned during previous levels. The back crawl will be expanded and the front crawl will be perfected. Swimmers will also learn how to tread water. LEVEL 4 Designed to build upon the skills mastered at Level 3. Swimmers will develop endurance to swim greater distances. Breaststroke and sidestroke are also taught. ADULT (14 & OVER) For adults/teens who either want to overcome their fear of the water or for adults that are comfortable in the water, but would like to improve their strokes.

On the first day of each session, the instructors will assess the participant’s swimming ability by performing a skills test. Based on the test, the instructor will determine the participants class level.

PARENT/TODDLER (18-48 MONTHS) Reinforces skills learned in the infant class and progresses to learn more advanced skills age appropriate for a toddler. LIFEGUARDING TRAINING
Train to become a certified American Red Cross lifeguard and learn valuable skills including injury prevention, facility safety, patron surveillance, emergency preparation, rescue skills, victim assessment, first aid, CPR/AED and care for head, neck and spinal injuries.
PREREQUISITE: Participant must be able to swim 300 yards continuously, complete a timed retrieval of a 10lb object from a depth of 7-10 ft., tread water with no hands for 2 minutes in deep water. In the event a participant fails to complete the prerequisite test, he/she may request a refund minus the $50 non-refundable fee or transfer to another Lifeguard Training Session at no additional cost. Transfers will only be allowed once per participant for free. Participants 17 and under MUST be accompanied by an adult during the prerequisite activities. Participants must be present for pre-requisite testing and all four class days. Pre-Requisite will take place on first day of class at

MCALLEN MAKOS SWIM TEAM This non-competitive swim team focuses on technique and conditioning. Participants are required to swim 25 yards comfortably and continuously. To determine levels, all new participants must be present on the first day of class.

T.A.A.F. TEAM PROGRAMS McAllen Parks and Recreation is proud to offer Texas Amateur Athletics Federation (T.A.A.F.) programs. Young athletes will compete against other individuals and teams from across the Rio Grande Valley and the state in various sports including track & field, golf, swimming and tennis. Teams will attend local tournaments and meets, earning the opportunity to compete at the regional level. A complete schedule of meets and competitions will be provided once classes begin. Individual T.A.A.F. membership is included in the class fee. Other fees including individual meet fees are the responsibility of the participant. Qualifying athletes will earn a chance to compete in the state Games of Texas, a week-long Olympic style competition featuring a variety of sports.

TAAF SUMMER GOLF TEAM
Team Golf is for the experienced golfers (ages 7-18 years) who want to improve their game play while working towards regional and state competition within Region 2 of the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation. A playing test will be required before joining the team. Testing will be scheduled on Monday, June 3rd. The team will participate in tournaments during the summer.
