T.A.A.F. TEAM PROGRAMS McAllen Parks and Recreation is proud to offer Texas Amateur Athletics Federation (T.A.A.F.) programs. Young athletes will compete against other individuals and teams from across the Rio Grande Valley and the state in various sports including track & field, golf, swimming and tennis. Teams will attend local tournaments and meets, earning the opportunity to compete at the regional level. Qualifying athletes will earn a chance to compete in the state Games of Texas, a week-long Olympic style competition featuring a variety of sports. Experienced athletes are invited to join Team McAllen. A complete schedule of meets and competitions will be provided once classes begin. Individual T.A.A.F. membership is included in the class fee. Other fees including individual meet fees are the responsibility of the participant. All parents of athletes participating in T.A.A.F. programs will be REQUIRED to attend an informational meeting on Thursday, June 7th at 7:00 p.m. at Las Palmas Community Center. We will provide you with information for the upcoming summer and your child's programs. Parents of athletes that qualify for the Games of Texas will be required to attend a meeting. We will discuss travel, expenses and general information regarding the trip to College Station. NOTE : The minimum age to travel with Team McAllen is eight years of age.

Discover the lifetime sport of tennis. Classes are designed to introduce the beginner to fun-filled court action and prepare the advanced player for match play. This program will provide instruction in forehand, backhand, and the serve. Classes will progress to rally, basic court position play and court strategy. The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department will host a series of four golf camps for students ages 7-17 at Palm View Golf Course. Instructors will supervise the camp and will introduce students to the rules, etiquette and skills of golf. Instruction will emphasize driving, pitching and putting. Players will participate in a final day tournament for awards. Parents are invited to attend this event. A collared shirt is required on the course. If golf spikes are worn they must be soft spikes. Designed to teach parents how to work safely and effectively with their infant to help develop water adjustment skills and learn to have fun in the water. PARENT/TODDLER (18-48 MONTHS)

PRE-SCHOOL (4-5 YEARS)

Learn basic water adjustment skills with an emphasis on play to prepare children for comfort in the water for Youth Level 1 & 2. Designed to teach swimmer independence with initial play in the wading pool and progression to the main pool when students are ready.

YOUTH (6 - 13 YEARS)

On the first day ofeach session, the instructors willassess the participant's swimming ability byperforming a skills test. Based on the test, the instructor willdetermine the participants class level. LEVEL 1 & 2 Swimmers will start to learn basic water exploration and swimming skills. This class covers submersion under the water, floating & gliding on front & back, rhythmic breathing, safety skills, and front & back crawls at a beginner level. LEVEL3 Designed to build upon skills learned during previous levels. The back crawl will be expanded and the front crawl will be perfected. Swimmers will also learn how to tread water. LEVEL4 Designed to build upon the skills mastered at Level 3. Swimmers will develop endurance to swim greater distances. Breaststroke and sidestroke are also taught. ADULT (14& OVER) For adults/teens who either want to overcome their fear of the water or for adults that are comfortable in the water, but would like to improve their strokes.
