Aircraft mishap exercise tests Cherry Point personnel LANCE CPL. VICTOR A. ARRIAGA MCAS CHERRY POINT

In preparation for the upcoming Cherry Point air show, several military and civilian organizations participated in a mass casualty exercise April 29 here. The exercise tested how fast first responders, Cherry Point personnel and civilian personnel were able to respond to a mock aircraft mishap in which a number of air show participants were “injured” and required assistance. Air shows are inherently safe, largely due to many safety precautions, including intense preparation such as this exercise for any scenario. “It’s actually a requirement for an air show that we practice certain things to make sure our first responders can get there on time and that all of our command and control are set up properly,” said Grant DeHaven, the exercise director. “The intent is to be able to meet certain requirements from the Federal Aviation Administration and military side and also just to make sure that everything works from a realistic standpoint before we conduct the actual air show.” At the start of the exercise, emergency personnel tended to simulated victims with injuries ranging from broken arms to life-threatening injuries. The responders were timed to see how fast they could treat the victims in order to ensure that the minimal time was taken to treat each one. “It is important that we are flexible during this type of exercises, because we’re going to have to be flexible in real-time,” said DeHaven.

Approximately 30 Marines with Marine Attack Squadron 223 returned to Cherry Point from Okinawa, Japan, and Korea after supporting the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, during a Unit Deployment Program April 30. In order to establish regulations governing the possession, use and storage of personal firearms, weapons, explosives, ammunition, BB Guns, bows and arrows, crossbows and bolts, pyrotechnics, and fireworks aboard Cherry Point and areas under the jurisdiction of the commanding officer, Air Station Order 5510.15D has been revised and will be effective beginning May 29. “The purpose of revising the order was to be in compliance with new Marine Corps policies concerning regulations, transportation and storage of firearms and weapons across all Marine Corps fa-

cilities,” said Maj. Jason M. Wintermute, director of security and emergency services and provost marshal with Cherry Point’s Provost Marshal’s Office. All privately owned fi rearms used, possessed, introduced or stored at MCAS Cherry Point are required to be registered with PMO by the owner. In order to register a firearm aboard the air station, the owner must meet a list of criteria. The owner must possess a valid military, family member, or authorized civilian identification card, have proof of purchase of the firearm , or bring the actual firearm to be registered in a locked case unloaded and in a safe condition to the Pass and Identification Office in

building 251 to be properly registered. ASO 5510.15D has been updated specifically to include provisions on storage and transportation requirements of firearms aboard Cherry Point, said Wintermute. Clear, effective communication is one of the most important ingredients to have when it comes to individual and organizational success. Communication seems to be the main culprit to tear down work sections and relationships. There is a remedy to faulty communication illustrated in the “Tower of Babel” narrative found in Genesis 11:1-6, which presents the power of communication in an extraordinary manner. It is clearly articulated in the narrative that the people of Babel were a unified people on a mission. They rallied around the common goal of making a name for themselves by coming together to build a tower that reached the heavens. The task at hand was easy because everyone spoke the same language and desired to achieve the same goal. Because of their uncanny communication and cooperation, God stated that nothing would have been impossible for them to accomplish because they were one in all aspects.

Their communication drove the actions needed to achieve their goals and vision. How great would we be today if we all truly spoke the same language and rallied around a common goal. Communication is the key to life. The people in the Tower of Babel narrative had a clear idea of what their ultimate task was and the motive behind that task, which led them to be more excited and focused on reaching the desired end. It is extremely difficult for people to swim in muddled water; Therefore, leaders must own their vision so that they can communicate it effectively, providing their people with clean and clear water to swim in. This leads us to the importance of communication in leadership. It is imperative that leaders have a clear picture of what the future looks like and where they desire to go before they can enlist people to help fulfill the vision. The sky is the limit as illustrated by the “Tower of Babel” narrative.

CPL. EMILY D. TORRES Job Title: Administrative Clerk Unit: Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2 Age: 20 Hometown: San Antonio, Texas Date Joined: June 14, 2012 Cpl. Emily D. Torres is a G-1 administrative clerk for Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2. Torres, a San Antonio, Texas native, earned the rank of corporal meritoriously for her hard work in March and since then has been tasked with added responsibilities that come with being a noncommissioned officer. “A lot has changed, more than I thought it would, after picking up corporal,” said Torres. “Now I have to supervise a lot more and help the junior Marines.” According to Torres, as soon as she picked up corporal she was made an operations NCO along with her current admin duties. “We receive tasks from the Marine Expeditionary Force and we have to figure out who to send to the different locations they task us with,” said Torres. Torres also completes special projects for her senior leadership, which she says is her favorite part of her job. “We have to do briefs with other Marine Aircraft Groups on who we are going to send to locations and it’s pretty interesting,” said Torres. According to Torres, the most difficult part of her job is trying to instruct Marines on why they are specifically getting tasked with a project. “Sometimes we are tasked with difficult billets and it’s hard for someone to take it because no one wants to give up their best person,” said Torres.

MWCS-28 Marines use history to reawaken squadron

The display board is an addition to the squadron’s Hall of History, created by Marines within the squadron as a reminder of the Marine’s history and accomplishments. The creation of the Hall of History is one of the steps the squadron is taking to help them get back to the basics.

Marine Corps History is comprised of defining moments made by those who have accomplished goals and missions as well as made mistakes and learned from them in the past. With the knowledge of known accomplishments, Marines in today’s Corps are equipped with a template for success. Members of Marine Wing Communications Squadron 28 began constructing the Hall of History within the squadron Feb. 15 at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C. MWCS-28 is charged with connecting the warfighter to the combat power of Marine aviation through Marine air command and control systems agencies and task organized aviation combat elements, according to Lt. Col. Jaime Macias, the commanding officer of MWCS-28. The Hall of History portrays a symbolic relationship between the ACE, MACCS and the squadron since 1967. The Hall of History is comprised of multiple exhibits displaying the squadron’s history dating back to the establishing date of Sept. 1, 1967. “The Hall of History is for the Marines – past and present,” said Macias. In an effort to ensure Marines are developing successfully in every aspect of being a Marine, the squadron is instituting the Hall of History in every way that they can. “As a part of the squadron sponsorship program and our efforts to sustain the transformation, we will mail all new-joins a one-page summary of the squadron’s history,” said Macias. “Once they check in, their sponsor will walk them down the passageway and discuss the history and recognition of the squadron.” The Hall of History was established to foster pride and the program was set in place to help the Marines remember the success and history of the squadron. “Marines pride themselves in their history, their legacy,” said Macias. “It is important to me to educate our Marines not only about our illustrious Marine Corps history, but also the history of the

squadron.” Living in the shadow of a great legacy is not only challenging, but it also unifies the Marine Corps. October 2013, the commandant and the sergeant major of the Marine Corps presented the concept of the Reawakening to all ranks of the Marine Corps. Through the Reawakening, Marines are to reinvigorate themselves and those around them to continue to display the persistent discipline, faithful obedience to orders and instructions and strict adherence to standards that were once shown. “The Reawakening is about acknowledging and respecting the belief in who we are and what we do,” said Macias. “This is what the Hall of History represents. The hall is a reminder to the Marines that we volunteered to serve our nation and must uphold our standards and remain ready for the next conflict.” While trying to implement the Reawakening at the squadron, the commanding officer also wants his Marines to be proud of their unit and the accomplishments they have made. “The hall represents the times in our Corps’ history when our Marines have been remarkable stewards of our resources and reputation,” said Macias. “Every time I walk down the hall, I am reminded of what the Marines, past and present, have accomplished, and it makes me proud to be the commander of such a distinguished unit.” The Hall of History presented the squadron with a sense of pride and ownership of not just their own history but of the history of the Marine Corps and the squadron’s Marines are proud to share a piece of the squadron with every new Marine. “The work that we have done is not just for today, but it is to help mold the Marines of tomorrow that come to the squadron,” said Lance Cpl. Luke J. Highley, a ground radio repairer with the squadron. “We all are a part of the same unit, brothers and sisters, and it’s a great way to bring us closer together.

Runners temper their mettle during MARSOC Mud Run

Running enthusiasts converged on Stone Bay for the MARSOC Mud, Sweat & Tears 5-Mile Mud Run at Camp Lejeune, N.C., April 26, 2014. The course offered a glimpse into the trying conditions faced by Marines and Sailors training aboard the base. In addition to putting their own mettle to the test on some of the same routes used by the Marine Corps, the families of service members deployed with Combat Logistics Battalion 22, 2nd Marine Logistics Group teamed up with other runners from the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit community to hit the course in support of their loved ones overseas. The runners earned their laundry day, turning their bright pink shirts a few hues darker as they splashed through the five-mile obstacle course. Dozens of other teams and hundreds of individual runners also joined the participants from CLB-22.

Initiative is one of the leadership traits instilled in Marines early on in their careers. Before they earn the title Marine, every recruit that steps on the yellow foot prints learns its importance. It is initiative that proved vital in the success of Sgt. Jason Connolly, an aviation ordnance systems technician with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 14. He recently earned the Marine Corps Aviation Association’s Ordnance Marine of the Year Award. Connolly knew he was nominated for the award, but said he was caught off guard when he found out he won. “I was in shock at first,” he said. “It was a little overwhelming.” His initiative, efforts and hard work are what led to his squadron nominating him, said Gunnery Sgt. Michael Bickel, the MALS-14 ordnance chief. “He is the go to guy,” Bickel said. “I don’t have to give him directions or tell him what needs to be done. He just does it.” This year, Connolly helped his unit build over 14,000 pounds of ordnance and was attached to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit when they accepted more than 727 tons of ordnance. Connolly has worked hands on with various types of ordnance daily for seven years. He said he is glad he chose his job field because he loves the camaraderie that comes along with it. “I never would have received this award without the hard work of the other Marines I’ve worked with and the great leadership here at my squadron,” said Connolly. Connolly said he has 17 great Marines directly under his charge, and he tries to instill the importance of initiative in them. “Every day is filled with different tasks and we never know what to expect,” he said. “There are so many moving parts to our job from building ordnance to delivering it, so it is important that we always take the initiative to get a game plan together.” While Connolly continues to be recognized for his accomplishments and observes his hard work and dedication to duty coming to fruition, he remains humble and focused on his goals and future endeavors. “I don’t forget that I’m a Marine first,” said Connolly who volunteers in his community while also taking college courses. He recently won the East Coast Aviation Ordnanceman of the Year Award and will be presented the Marine Corps Aviation Association’s Ordnance Marine of the Year award May 17. “It’s a great feeling,” said Connolly. “I love ordnance and I plan to do 20 years in this job field.”

Air Force ops excel at MCB Hawaii’s training facilities An Air Force Pararescueman with 131st Rescue Squadron, 129th Rescue Wing, Air National Guard, hoists onto a Sikorsky HH60G Pave Hawk helicopter as a “patient casualty” is medically evacuated from a downed aircraft during a search and rescue training mission at Marine Corps Training Area Bellows, Hawaii. The 129th Rescue Wing, designated at Moffett Federal Airfield, Mountain View, Calif., traveled to Marine Corps Base Hawaii to conduct various training exercises to sustain familiarity of operating in jungle-type terrain.

Air Force Pararescuemen with 131st Rescue Squadron, 129th Rescue Wing, Air National Guard, assess the wreckage of a simulated aircraft crash site and prompt villagers to stay back during a search and rescue training mission at Marine Corps Training Area Bellows, Hawaii. The training mission involved 30 roleplayers participating as “villagers” while the Pararescuemen pulled two dummies, or “survivors,” out of the aircraft and prepared them for a medical evacuation onto a Sikorsky HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter.

MARINE CORPS TRAINING AREA BELLOWS, Hawaii - The129th Rescue Wing arrived at Marine Corps Base Hawaii April 22 to conduct several training missions to sustain its familiarity in jungle terrain. Stationed at Moffett Federal Airfield, Mountain View, Calif., the 129th Rescue Wing is part of the Air National Guard and specializes in conducting humanitarian and combat search and rescue missions anywhere in the world. After landing at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, the Wing sent its airmen to undergo the helo dunker course at the base pool and learn how to safely egress from a sinking aircraft. The helo dunker is required training for all U.S. service members in order to qualify to board military aircraft during training and operations in Hawaii. “Marine Corps Base Hawaii prides itself on our ability to facilitate training for the warfighter,” said Mark Robinson, MCB Hawaii

The Wing executed a beach landing with air support from both Lockheed P-3 Orion and Boeing C-17 Globemaster III aircraft. The

rescue helicopters to rescue two of three dummies, or “pilots.” Several PJs prepared the “survivors” for medical evacuation while the rest of the team spoke to some of the “villagers” and searched for the other “missing” pilot. After preparing the survivors for MEDEVAC, the PJs cleared part of the jungle terrain and prepared to hoist themselves back into their aircraft. “With this scenario, the training was a bit harder for the PJs because we implemented more civilians than a real world scenario would include,” Rob explained. “We have executed more real world scenarios than we have training scenarios because we usually don’t have a lot of time, so we included tasks we’d like to practice so that we can implement them into future missions.” As the U.S. military prepares to host 23 nations in the upcoming 2014 Rim of the Pacific, the Marine Corps’ training areas will continue to play an integral role in sustaining familiarity in both humanitarian and combat operations.

beach landing allowed the pilots to grow familiar with the wind currents of Oahu. “This area is a great place for us to practice these exercises,” said Rob, a Pararescue instructor with 131st Rescue Squadron, 129RQW. “We reviewed all of the training areas available to us in Hawaii and found that (MCTAB) had the best opportunity for the training we need while we’re here.” The Wing leadership planned several scenarios for their unaware airmen to execute. Commanders held a brief each day to inform the airmen of a particular scenario taking place, and they were tasked with completing the unexpected mission. 129th Rescue Wing conducted an aircraft down/patient casualty search and rescue training mission. Instructors overseeing the exercise used 30 civilian roleplayers portrayed as “villagers” who were dispersed throughout the grassy area of the aircraft crash site. This Proposed Plan identifies the preferred alternative for addressing groundwater contamination at Operable Unit 1 (OU1) at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point, North Carolina, and provides the rationale for this preference. Sites 42, 47, 51, 52, 92, and 98 were identified as contributing chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to groundwater and are collectively referred to as the OU1 Central Groundwater Plume (CGWP) sites. The U.S. Navy (Navy) proposes in-situ enhanced bioremediation, zero valent iron permeable reactive barriers, and monitored natural attenuation of the surficial aquifer, land use controls preventing intrusive activities below the water table, prohibiting the use of the surficial aquifer groundwater, and future monitoring and evaluation of the potential for indoor air vapor intrusion impacts from building construction and building modification at OU1. The Navy, the lead agency for site activities, and the support agencies, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 4, and the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR), issues this document. The Navy and EPA, in consultation with NCDENR, will make the final decision on the remedial approach for the OU1 CGWP sites after reviewing and considering all information submitted during the 45-day public comment period from May 9 to June 23, 2014. The Navy and EPA, in consultation with NCDENR, may modify the preferred alternative or select another remedial action for the OU1 CGWP sites based on new information or public comments. VMA-223’s mission is to support 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and other Marine Corps assets with offensive air support, armed reconnaissance and air defense. During the UDP, the Marines performed aircraft maintenance and flight operations. The UDP provided the Marines with training on both international and operational scenarios that contributed to their long term military occupational specialty proficiency, safety, and squadron readiness. Not only did the Marines perform exemplary, but in all of their efforts they kept the squadron’s mission as their first priority, according to Christ. Christ said the Marines maintained remarkable aircraft readiness statistics through integration with the United States Air Force, Republic of Korea Air Force and Japan Air Self-Defense Force. While some Marines where in Japan for six months others were there for four months or less. Lance Cpl. Christopher Lynch, an aircraft electrical systems technician with the squadron, was in Okinawa for approximately four months. “I was an avionics technician on the AV-8B Harrier working on and repairing them after flight discrepancies,” said Lynch. Although the Marines were supporting the squadron and the 31st MEU, they also got a chance to experience the Japanese culture. “Living in Japan during the UDP was very interesting,” said Lynch. “Having never been there before I learned a good amount about the Japanese and their culture.”

The air station is expecting more than 150,000 visitors this year and because of the large turnout, additional organizations will assist Cherry Point personnel throughout the air show. “We set this thing up on base for a reason,” said Col. Chris Pappas III, the air station’s commanding officer. “It is important that we use our imagination and take everything for what it is worth so we can ask ourselves ‘What would I do differently to make this better?’ If we don’t learn, then we won’t get a lesson out of it.”

The firearm must be registered with PMO, all firearms must be kept unloaded and secured in a fully encased container that is capable of completely enclosing the firearm and being locked with a key or combination lock. All firearms must be fitted with a trigger lock and ammunition must be stored separately from firearms and in a container locked with a key or combination lock. Regardless of the owners pay grade, privately owned firearms are prohibited in all federal facilities; to include government leased spaces and government vehicles, unless required by a specific duty. No personally owned firearms or weapons will be concealed either on a person or in a vehicle. Military and civilian personnel residing off station may transport properly registered firearms and weapons aboard Cherry Point for recreational shooting and hunting purposes only. Japan, US first responders train for aircraft mishap

OKINAWA, Japan - U.S. Forces Japan and local first responders executed Off-Base Aircraft Mishap Exercise 2014 April 24 at the Naha Military Port. During the exercise, local and U.S. military police, fire fighters and emergency response personnel executed a series of planned training events in response to the simulated crash of a military aircraft in an urban area. “This is a great opportunity for the U.S. military and local first responders to work together, so that we are prepared to handle an emergency,” said U.S. Army Col. David W. Detata, chief of the Okinawa Area Field Office, U.S. Forces Japan. “We learn a great deal by conducting exercises like this, and working alongside one another.” The exercise ensures that both Japan and U.S. first responders establish important communication links for the coordination of firefighting and rescue operations, and secure and control the

mishap site, according to Hitoshi Tasaki, director of Crisis Management with Okinawa Prefectural Police. “(U.S. forces and local first responders) have different activities and systems and use different equipment,” said Tasaki. “It is important to understand the differences and build mutual cooperation with each other.” The local units involved in the exercise included the Naha Police Station, Naha City Fire Department, Okinawa Prefectural Police, and the Japanese Coast Guard. They worked alongside U.S. military counterparts including U.S. Army military police, Marine Corps Installations Pacific Fire and Emergency Services, Marine Corps Air Station Futenma Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting, and the Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler Provost Marshal’s Office. The OBAMEX-14 scenario simulated a downed U.S. Marine Corps rotary wing aircraft in Naha City, injuring crew members and bystanders, while

also damaging nearby vehicles and trapping passengers. The simulated crash took place within the jurisdiction of Naha City Fire Department and Naha Police Station. First responders needed to control the blazing aircraft, passengers trapped in vehicles, and provide appropriate medical aid to the injured. “In any aircraft mishap response, the confusion requires well-rehearsed procedures, a tight notification process and rapid-fire decision making,” said Capt. Braden T. Trainor, the operations officer for Camp Butler PMO. “This is made exponentially more challenging when the other agencies you’re working with speak a different language. We’ve seen here today we can overcome language barriers and different backgrounds, and effect emergency incident response to a catastrophe.” As each unit worked alongside their counterparts in the rescue scenario, they gained a stronger sense of cooperation, mutual respect and teamwork, according to Trainor.

“If we want to have a shot at managing a disaster such as this one, where loss of military aircraft is coupled with potential loss of American and Okinawan lives, we need to devote time to communicating with our bilateral partners and rehearse,” said Trainor. “There is no understating the camaraderie and trust weeks of working so closely together with another nation engenders.” As the event drew to a close, emergency workers with the different units learned that should the need arise, they can count on each other, according to Detata. “We learn a great deal from exercises like this and working alongside one another,” said Detata. “Ultimately, exercises such as this help to make Okinawa a safe place to live and work. We’re committed to ensuring all emergency personnel are prepared to cooperate and respond to any potential emergency, no matter where it may occur.”

11th MEU and PHIBRON 5 unite for first at-sea period

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. Marines and sailors with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Amphibious Squadron 5 (PHIBRON 5) completed two weeks of sea-based predeployment training off the coast of San Diego. PHIBRON Marine Expeditionary Unit Integration Training (PMINT) was the first full-scale at-sea event in the 11th MEU’s predeployment cycle. The training allowed the MEU, alongside their Navy counterparts, to work through various missions while embarked on three separate ships. During this time, they conducted amphibious operations and responded to various simulated crises.

“This was an excellent first opportunity to integrate with the Navy and bring together our core competencies in the accomplishment of the many missions we may be called upon to conduct,” said 11th MEU Commanding Officer Col. Matthew Trollinger. “We are learning as individuals and as a collective unit, and I am confident our progression is on track.” During the training, Marines and sailors conducted sea-based exercises to build cohesion between the MEU and PHIBRON 5. They simulated visit, board, search, and seizures (VBSS), airfield seizures, raids on hostile positions, embassy reinforcement, small craft action team (SCAT) rehearsal drills, and many other mission-essential evolutions throughout

the two-week period to mimic combat conditions that could be encountered during the MEU’s scheduled deployment this summer. According to Capt. Jonathan Schillo, executive officer of the 11th MEU’s Reconnaissance Company, working with the Navy while executing their missions was successful and allowed for a better understanding of the PHIBRON and MEU capabilities. “The syncing efforts with us and the blue side were surprisingly smooth for it being the first time we have [worked] together,” said Schillo. “The Navy seemed excited to work with us; the command climate was great and overall it was rewarding for both of us.” Though the blue-green team trained

The first time you do anything or plan anything, it’s going to be slower than usual, but we will get the operations down, especially with the amount of enthusiasm that has been shown so far.” The Navy’s rank structure, vocabulary, and shipboard procedures are a few things the majority of Marines encountered for the first time. With many Marines experiencing ship life for the first time, and the sailors and crew adjusting to a significant increase in personnel, cooperation is essential to make living experiences positive. “Living conditions here are a lot different from barracks life. It’s definitely a lot tighter and you’re pretty much right on top of your rack mates,” said Lance Cpl. Edgardo Melendez, an embarkation specialist with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 163 and a Los Angeles native. “It’s a little hard to get used to [getting around] because it’s sort of like a maze, but as time goes by it becomes muscle memory. This is my first deployment and it’s all very new to me, but it’s something over time I’ll just have to get used to. PMINT serves as a learning experience for all elements of the MEU and ARG. The next sea trial will be an opportunity to take the lessons learned from PMINT and apply them. “The ship is a dangerous place for a lot of reasons,” said Rozsypal. “It’s good that we make mistakes now early, before it really matters later.” With the first at-sea period complete, it brings the 11th MEU and PHIBRON 5 team that much closer to deployment. “I’m looking forward to this deployment,” said Meuser. “I think as long as we cooperate with each other and make the right adjustments, we will definitely be successful.” PMINT is the first shipboard event the MEU will conduct as part of their predeployment training program. The MEU will deploy with the Makin Island ARG this summer aboard the USS Makin Island, USS San Diego, and the USS Comstock.

efficiently, the challenges of coordinating efforts between three ships, the USS Makin Island, San Diego, and Comstock, provide an opportunity to improve with each upcoming training period. From the USS San Diego, 11th MEU Executive Officer Lt. Col. Eddy Hansen highlighted the challenges, “Communication is the key here. This is the first time this MEU has been split three different ways and the command element two ways. We have to continue to meet our objectives even though we are on different ships, and that’s something we can improve on.” Maj. Chris Rozsypal, detachment officer-in-charge of all Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 163 (Reinforced) personnel aboard the USS San Diego, and executive officer of troops, also emphasized the importance of planning and communication. “The MEU and the Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) have to talk to each other so we can all be more combat effective,” said Rozsypal. “Our job as the aviation combat element is to provide air support in all these different missions that demand different things from us. Communicating those needs helps us to support the MEU to the maximum extent possible.” For each MEU task, the planning involved is very detailed so aircraft can be ready at the exact time needed, according to Rozsypal. That extra minute during which support is not provided can be the difference between life and death. While training for the scheduled deployment, Marines and sailors were given the opportunity to live among their Navy brothers and sisters, getting a taste of life on a ship. It took compliance on both ends to make the merger run smoothly. “This is a great event for us because it gives us a good foundation,” said Navy Capt. Carl Meuser, executive officer of the USS San Diego. “On our side of things, we need to make sure there is enough food, fresh water, and anything else we will need to support the MEU while we are out there.

More than 20 Marines and Sailors from Cherry Point with the Single Marine Program built camaraderie May 2 – 4 during the annual Monster Energy’s Carolina Rebellion trip to Charlotte. Camping, crowd surfing and ‘moshing,’ the service members were able to view bands like Five Finger Death Punch and Avenged Sevenfold. “I think these types of events like the Carolina Rebellion are great for the service members because it gives them a chance to see things off base that they aren’t familiar with,” said Taylor Vaden, the SMP recreational assistant and trip supervisor. “Our programs with the SMP usually give the Marines and Sailors a chance to get

out and have some fun and meet new people.” The Carolina Rebellion is the mid-Atlantic’s biggest rock festival with a massive line-up featuring bands like Rob Zombie and Kid Rock. With more than 40,000 participants and different genres of music performing, the Marines and Sailors were able to get to know each other through music. “The trip was a lot of fun and I thought it was awesome,” said Pfc. David PiñaHuitzil, an administrative clerk with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron. “The line-ups were pretty cool and just getting to meet more Marines was lots of fun.” The SMP is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of single and unaccompanied Marines and Sailors by developing initiatives and supporting the community.

“I think it’s great that the trips have people from different units and work sections,” said PiñaHuitzil. “We get to know Marines and Sailors from all over the station and get to learn about the work they do.” Vaden encourages Marines and Sailors to get involved because on trips like the Carolina Rebellion, you can meet people with similar interests. “The Marines and Sailors were really good the entire trip,” said Vaden. “I encourage everyone to keep participating in these events and volunteering because not only do more people make it more fun, but you also get to meet more of your fellow service members.”

As school comes to an end, high school seniors begin receiving acceptance letters from the college or university that they plan to attend. With acceptance letters comes the need for financial aid, and the scholarship search is on. The Fisher House Foundation announced three military dependents from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C, who would receive scholarships to aid them in their 2014-2015 academic year. The recipients are scheduled to receive their award letters on May 15. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recipients are Savannah Cobb, Caitlin Solter and Gessica Vallone. Through the Scholarships for Military Children Program, military children of commissary patrons received a non-renewable grant for $2,000. To be considered for the scholarships, applicants had to adhere to requirements like being enrolled or planning to enroll full-time in a four-year undergraduate college or university accredited in the United States. The participants also had to have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, according to the Fisher House Foundation Scholarship for Military Children official webpage. In addition to the program requirements, the students were

selected based on their participation in school, the community, volunteer activities, work experience and a written essay. For the 2014-2015 academic year, with the help of over 240 commissaries, 600 recipients have been awarded the grant. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As a recipient, I feel honored to have received the Fisher House Scholarship,â&#x20AC;? said Caitlin Solter, a senior of New Bern High School and daughter of Lt. Col. Alan W. Solter, the commanding officer of Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have worked very hard and earning a scholarship to help pay for college is a blessing.â&#x20AC;? Caitlinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leadership in and out of school has worked in her favor to assist her in earning the scholarship, according to Jimmy Green one of the assistant principals at New Bern High. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Caitlin is an exemplary student,â&#x20AC;? said Green. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She does what she is asked and she is a great student for others to emulate.â&#x20AC;? Once again we are proud to present our annual water quality report covering all testing performed between January 1 and December 31, 2013. Over the years, we have dedicated ourselves to producing drinking water that meets all state and federal standards. We continually strive to adopt new methods for delivering the bestquality drinking water to you. As new challenges to drinking water safety emerge, we remain vigilant in meeting the goals of source water protection, water conservation and community education while continuing to serve the needs of all our water users. We encourage you to share your thoughts with us on the information contained in this report. Should you ever have any questions, we are always available to assist you. Sampling Results Hundreds of water samples have been taken in order to determine the presence of any radioactive, biological, inorganic, volatile organic, or synthetic organic contaminants. The state requires us to monitor for certain substances less than once per year because the concentrations of these substances do not change frequently. All testing during 2013 was compliant with the National Primary Drinking Water Standards. Where does my water come from? The source of Cherry Pointâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s drinking water is groundwater from the Castle Hayne Aquifer, which extends from southern Virginia to Wilmington, North Carolina. Water is removed from depths of from 195 feet to 329 feet below the surface by 23 wells and then pumped to a state-of-the-art water treatment plant. The Cherry Point Water Treatment Plant provides, on average, 4.1 million gallons per day of drinking water to 17,144 customers who live and work at MCAS Cherry Point.

â&#x20AC;˘ Automatic dishwashers use 15 gallons for every cycle. So get a run for your money and load it to capacity. â&#x20AC;˘ Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. â&#x20AC;˘ Check every faucet in your home for leaks. Just a slow drip can waste 15 to 20 gallons a day. Fix it and you can save almost 6,000 gallons per year. â&#x20AC;˘ Check toilets for leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring in the tank. Watch for a few minutes to see if the color shows up in the bowl. It is not uncommon to lose up to 100 gallons a day from an invisible toilet leak. Fix it and you save more than 30,000 gallons a year. â&#x20AC;˘ Use your water meter to detect hidden leaks. Simply turn off all taps and water using appliances. Then check the meter after 15 minutes. If it moved, you have a leak. Cross Connection Cross connections that contaminate drinking water distribution lines are a major concern. A cross connection is formed at any point where a drinking water line connects to equipment (boilers), systems containing chemicals (air conditioning systems, fire sprinkler systems, irrigation systems), or other sources of questionable quality. Cross connection contamination can occur when the pressure in the equipment or system is greater than the pressure inside the drinking water line (back pressure). Contamination can also occur with the pressure in the drinking water line drops due to fairly routine occurrences (main breaks, heavy water demand), causing contamination to be sucked out from the equipment and into the drinking water line (backsiphonage).
