About

Now running its sixth edition, the MCAST ICA Festival provides a platform for creative students to display their work while simultaneously meeting with industry stakeholders. It features work by the final-year BA students from MCAST’s Institute for the Creative Arts. Apart from also giving career advice to MCAST’s prospective students it also acts as a link between the institute and the local art and design community. Ultimately, the MCAST ICA Festival’s purpose and goal is to celebrate the students’ creativity and hard work that came to fruition throughout their challenging but gratifying years of education, as well as showcasing their work to industry experts outside the formal educational context.

About

Liminality refers to what is simultaneously one of the most daunting and uncomfortable parts of the creative process that is also the final frontier before the next great idea. With this theme we urge individuals not to fear the unknown but embrace this liminal space of creativity to continue pushing for innovation and expression in one’s chosen discipline. This evokes feelings of sci-fi and exploration that go hand in hand with the theme – Embrace Liminality – as well as the aesthetic that was implemented for the MCAST ICA Festival 2022.

Dedication

1947 – 2022

To Donald Friggieri Director, Teacher, Mentor and Friend I still remember in June 1983 when I visited Donald Friggieri’s exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta. Impeccably displayed, it was a remarkable collection of an innovative, contemporary design in silversmithing with a clever and highly refined craftsmanship. It was the product of his thesis as he had just graduated in three-dimensional design from Middlesex University. Yet we actually and accidentally rubbed shoulders some 10 years before in the early ‘70s while placing our works for a Sacred Art exhibition at the Annex of St John’s CoCathedral. But it was only in 1993, when he took the post of Headship at the Art and Design Centre (ADC) in Valletta, where I had just been teaching, that we started to get to know each other. Both of us lecturing in evening classes, we would meet between school hours and the evening session, take a walk in the streets of the city, and stop for a snack or a drink. Those

were the moments when we started to build our friendship, sharing ideas and debating, while not missing an occasional pinch of his humorous remarks. In 2001, with the foundation of MCAST, he was the driving force in giving birth to the College's Institute of Art and Design (now Institute for the Creative Arts) at Targa Gap, Mosta, together with some members of staff from the ADC, including myself. His disciplined yet amicable approach towards the teaching and learning aspects of education were an inspiration to both students and staff. His ever-constant support, understanding and complete trust in the performance of my duties until his retirement in 2008 are at the heart of my cherished memories, and mark some of the best years of my teaching career. - Alfred Camilleri Retired MCAST Lecturer

Thank You

MCAST President & Principal’s Message

It is with pride that we write this message to all students, staff members and other stakeholders who are directly or indirectly participating in this sixth edition of the MCAST ICA Festival. At the heart of each edition is the creative spirit of our final-year degree students who take part in such an exhibition of talent and resourcefulness. MCAST has become synonymous with opportunity and prosperity. Any student who has completed secondary education has an opportunity to work and learn at this College in a wide variety of subjects under six overarching sectors namely information technology, the applied sciences, engineering and transport, community services, business management and commerce, and the creative arts. All qualifications and work experiences or work placements lead to the prospect of a career or job openings. From surveys, over 92% of our students find jobs or careers in the areas of their studies. It is to the credit of our hard working management and lecturing staff members that our students can excel in their talent. The MCAST ICA Festival is an exemplary platform. This year’s theme Embrace Liminality is undoubtedly an interesting challenge for students to move from the periphery to the centre of their creative talent and display the limitless boundaries of their applied thoughts and the medium of their

choice. Liminality is a word used to describe the psychological process of transitioning across boundaries and borders. Coming from the Latin word “limen” which means threshold, it is literally the edge separating one space from another. Metaphorically speaking it is that space in the wall where people move from one room to another. This Festival is indeed the physical space provided by Spazju Kreattiv where students can project their creativity and expect to move to the next step of their limitless and original inspiration. In various forms, our students' ingenuity is a pleasure to watch, admire and appreciate. It is just more than visual. One could sense in all artefacts and displays the youngish soul, bodies and hands that experiment, dare and accomplish works that provoke, talk and elicit new margins of exploration and new investigations. That we are proud of this talent is a given fact. However, we are more than that. We are confident that our students are in good hands; that their talent is being drawn out in the most inspired manner possible; that the hard work at the Institute for the Creative Arts (ICA) augurs well for creativity in Malta. As a public institution, we will continue to be inspired by our strategic objective 2 in the College’s Plan 2022-2027 to strengthen quality and relevance to enhance the students’ learning experience. This festival fulfils in no small measure this objective. - Prof. Ian Refalo President - Prof. Joachim James Calleja Principal / CEO

MCAST ICA Director’s Message

Spazju Kreattiv Artistic Director's Message

While celebrating the work of students in their final year, this year’s edition of the MCAST ICA Festival, which bears the title Embrace Liminality, also commemorates Donald Friggieri’s contribution to education in the creative arts. Earlier this year Donald Friggieri, the first Director of what was previously known as MCAST’s Institute of Art and Design, sadly passed away. Nonetheless, his legacy lives on through lecturing staff at ICA who were former colleagues and/or students of his, and who now equally passionately pass on their love for and appreciation of the creative arts. As a specialist in three-dimensional design he would certainly have embraced liminality as part of the design process, an experience here most directly reflected in

the areas of Fashion, Product, and Spatial Design. Nonetheless, it also relates to the creative approach of other disciplines including Creative Media Production, Fine Art, Game Art & Visual Design, Graphic Design, Interactive Media, Performing Arts and Photography which, together with programmes in Journalism, Cultural Heritage Skills and Graphic Printing, are offered at ICA. Thanks go to all industry shareholders who have supported learners in their journeys over the years. Furthermore, special thanks go to Arts Council Malta and Spazju Kreattiv for their continuous support and contribution. Moreover, the extraordinary dedication and commitment of ICA staff and students, together with that of MCAST stakeholders, are also warmly acknowledged. - Dr Martina Caruana Director

One of Spazju Kreattiv’s main remits as the National Centre for Creativity is to act as a hub for emerging artists to harness their talents and skills within the sector. In this framework, the annual MCAST ICA Festival seeks to provide the needed resources and professional expertise for students to excel in their research and presentation of their work. This process comprises regular meetings between the staff of both entities to establish a platform where students are empowered to develop a body of work that promotes innovation and creativity. The showcase is not only a series of individual exhibits but, most importantly, a collective effort by all those involved to produce an event that promotes excellence.

Through the process, the Festival serves as an opportunity for participants to become better accustomed to the requirements needed to succeed in the sector while giving the space for them to meet other peers and enhance their network. Such a platform not only introduces the public to the potential emerging creatives but also allows the participants to strengthen their career trajectory within the creative sector and beyond. Within such a context of encounters and exchanges, Spazju Kreattiv is proud to host another edition of the MCAST ICA Festival. We look forward to strengthening such collaboration for the years to come and for Spazju Kreattiv to continue being a champion for social dialogue and creative expression. - Mr Daniel Azzopardi Spazju Kreattiv Artistic Director

The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Creative Media Production gives learners the opportunity to work hands-on in creative environments, and produce audio-visual content for both artistic and commercial practices, acquiring a broad range of knowledge and skills with respect to theory and practice in film-making along the way. The work presented in this space comes from this year’s graduands, and is a response to the modern challenges of multiplatform or transmedia storytelling. Transmedia storytelling communicates narrative across an integrated network of synced storylines and multimedia platforms. This exhibition is a showcase of each student’s creative talents, and is a contribution to our shared narrative. Each project could stand alone but collectively they form a complex narrative about an alternative world of heroes and villains. Moreover, each story gives us a greater understanding of the complex and colourful world they inhabit, and its rich and entertaining backstory.

Photographs are deemed to tell the truth, and we are always disappointed when the camera is ‘found out’ telling a lie, when it is revealed that a picture was ‘set up’, or an image is manipulated in the computer. In these days of Photoshop, the old saying that ‘the camera never lies’ seems to have been replaced by a new one, that ‘the camera always lies’. But a photographic image is true and false in equal measure. All photographic evidence, all photographic reality, requires interpretation. The fact that the photograph appears to be a window on the world is one of the medium’s greatest problems, and yet is at the root of its potency and its fascination. The work presented here by the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Photography graduands responds to these challenges. Each piece of work asks us to interpret the images, and reflect and think on what photography means to us as the viewer and what its role is in the society that we live in.
