Down Back Roads
Remembering Inez (Bennett) Lane For two decades, Inez Irene (Bennett) Lane wrote a monthly article featuring historical nuggets, interviews and life experiences. To thousands of Looking Glass readers, each episode was like taking a casual walk down a back road with a cherished friend. Her dogs, Old Blue and Hopalong almost always trotted alongside. At times, Inez, the dogs, and their literary companions found contentment on the porch. During the winter, a crackling fire in the fireplace might be the perfect catalyst to lead her thoughts down back roads. Inez was born August 20, 1906 in Spooner, Wisconsin. She was a lifelong student with a curiosity for knowledge. After moving to Polk County, Inez took a teacher’s position at Old Potter School.
She sponsored the Potter 4-H Club 1934-1959 and served as sponsor for the Polk County 4H Club for many of those years. Inez was a member of Old Potter Presbyterian Church where she taught a youth Sunday School Class. During World War Two, she served as a member of Polk County First Aid Team and served as a registrar for non-service employment. In support of the war effort, she spent her summer vacations working at Douglas Aircraft at Long Beach, California where she helped build B-17 Bombers and at Brown Shipyard in Houston, Texas where she helped build giant landing craft known as LSTs. Landing Ship Tanks were used by US and British forces to move personnel and ground assault equipment. Inez served as president of several local organizations including
the Mena Branch of AAUW, The Progressive Club, Mena Business and Professional Women’s Club, District 13 of American Legion Auxiliary, and others. She was active in the League of Women Voters, National Education Association, Polk County Education Association, and Mena Education Association. In 1955, Inez married Lloyd Lane. At the time of her passing, she was 89, a member of First Presbyterian Church of Mena, and had retired from Mena Public Schools. We hope you enjoy this collection of Inez’s adventures she entitled, ---.
