A LETTER FROM MCC’S MODERATOR

Dear MCC Members and Friends, Pastors & Lay Delegates: Welcome to the 25th General Conference of Metropolitan Community Churches, on behalf of our Elders and global staff! We have worked hard to prepare for our best conference in our history. Whether this is your first conference, or your 25th, we know you will be inspired. There is a reason we always gather during the season of Pentecost: because as we gather we always anticipate the fresh winds of the Holy Spirit to rush through us! We come together this conference under the banner of the word, “Believe,” expecting to hear a “word” from our God for our present and future. From the pre-conference programs, to the Pride witness in Chicago, to the outstanding preachers and music and worship; with our daily children and youth program; every special guest, plenary and workshop, celebration and award, we know our life-giving message will resound! MCC’s bold, 21st Century ministry is needed as never before, believe it! Welcome, and have an enjoyable, safe and blessed General Conference! Grace and Peace,

Union Theological Seminary joins in celebrating the 25th General Conference of the Metropolitan Community Churches! At Union, we Believe that together we will continue to make a difference in the world! ABOUT UNION THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York is a graduate school established in 1836 by founders “deeply impressed by the claim of the world upon the church. Union prepares women and men for committed lives of service to the church, academy and society. At Union education develops practices of mind, body, and spirit that foster academic excellence, social justice, and compassionate wisdom. GRADUATE PROGRAMS Master of Divinity (M.Div.) is a three year professional degree. It is primarily for those seeking to engage in the vocation of ministry, whether in churches, universities, hospitals and prison chaplaincies; in professional counseling; in secondary school or university teaching; or in business, government, journalism, social work and other professions. Additionally, Union has collaborative relationships with other educational institutions in the city, and offers two joint degree programs: the Master of Divinity/Master of Science in Social Work (M.Div./M.S.S.W.) and the Master of Arts in Religion. Master of Arts (M.A.) is a two-year academic degree undertaken in preparation for a variety of professional positions. Many M.A. students progress to or aspire towards Ph.D. study after graduation. Others choose the M.A. in order to focus their theological studies in particular area.

Master of Sacred Theology (S.T.M.) degree offers an opportunity for a relatively open structure of advanced theological study. It is for those who already have a Master of Divinity or Master of Arts, or its equivalent, as determined at the time of application. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) primarily prepares persons for vocations of teaching and research in college or university and seminaries, or those holding positions of leadership in churches or social service and social justice agencies. The program also includes work for the intermediate degree of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) which also must be earned at the Seminary. FOR MORE INFORMATION To learn more about Union, visit us online at utsnyc.edu, call (212) 280-1317 or e-mail admissions@uts.columbia.edu

A LETTER FROM THE GOVERNING BOARD

Welcome to the wonderful City of Chicago for our 25th General Conference, the world’s largest gathering of LGBT people of faith, our allies and friends. For 45 years, we have been tearing down walls and building up hope for a better today and a more fabulous tomorrow! Our prayer is that the work we do this week, the relationships made new and renewed, serve as the basis for a new tidal wave of justice rolling over each and every continent on God’s earth. With over 1,200 people here with us, we have faith that this is already unfolding. Three years ago, we gathered in Mexico to envision a new structure, one that would unleash the true power and potential of MCC. Faced with global economic recession, it became clear that doing this would be tough. So we looked to our local churches, ministries, clergy, and lay leaders, and we found an abundance of time, talent, and treasure. Since Acapulco, MCC has helped churches recover from natural disasters, empowered activists to face down hostile politicians, and provided aid and comfort to God’s LGBT children who suffered violence and hate-based bias. Where others sought to deny humanity, MCC affirmed it. Where geography and poverty produced isolation, MCC created community. This is the work of people of faith. This is MCC! Indeed, we are on our way to becoming The Premiere 21st Century Global Church. And you will see this in the workshops, the plenaries, the business meeting, the worship, and especially the fellowship of the communion table. We pray that all you experience this week serve to strengthen our movement. We are, indeed, transforming ourselves as we transform the world. MCC’s Governing Board,

WELCOME FROM THE CONFERENCE TEAM

It is an honor to welcome all of you to General Conference XXV. We have been hard at work since 2010 with the General Conference Core Team, MCC’s Senior Leadership Team and the Moderator building a program that we hope will inspire you to Believe. This conference would not be possible without the leadership and vision of MCC’s Moderator Rev. Elder Dr. Nancy L. Wilson and the entire Senior Leadership Team. We especially thank the members of the General Conference Core Team, for the countless hours spent planning this conference: Barbara Crabtree, Ann Craig, Dominic Kessell, Rev. Gordon McCoy, Rev. Wes Mullins, Jason O’Neill, Rev. Elder Dr. Mona West, and Rev. Elder Dr. Nancy Wilson. There are a few different things to note in this year’s program book: •

Celebrating MCC’s 25th General Conference — This year’s conference marks the 25th gathering of MCC’s General Conference. Each conference has contributed to the rich tapestry that is MCC. Follow along with us as we revisit past General Conferences starting on page 15 of this program book. Look for the blue and green bars at the bottom of each page and journey with us through 25 historic conferences.

QR Codes — As you look through this program, you will notice symbols like the one displayed in the left margin of this page. These are called Quick Response (QR) codes. You will notice these QR codes throughout the program book and at conference events to direct you to relevant information about conference programming such as business, workshops, worship and more. We encourage you to scan these QR codes with your smart-phone or tablet computer to instantly access this expanded information.*

What does this symbol mean? read here to find out

Using these QR codes helps us all reduce the carbon footprint our conference has on the environment by consciously reducing the amount of printed materials we use and provide. If you are unable to scan the QR code with your smart-phone/tablet, we have provided a short web address located below the QR code that you can use to access the same information. •

General Conference App — We have also created a smart-phone app to help you schedule your time at conference, find the location of events and even connect with other people attending the conference. The app is compatible with iPhone, Android, Blackberry and any phone or tablet device with a web browsing capability. To download the conference app: scan QR code on left or go to http://bld.hn/fjc When prompted, use event name: MCC General Conference

Use QR Code above to download the MCC General Conference App

We hope these resources enhance your conference experience. We invite you to take advantage of all that this week has to offer. We have a wonderful team of colleagues and volunteers that are here to assist you. Welcome to MCC General Conference XXV. Blessings,

Carlos Chavez Jennifer Justice Co-Directors of Global Community Building

*Most smart-phones have pre-installed apps that will use your phone’s camera to scan these codes, if you don’t already have an app capable of doing this, simply download a free QR code scanning app such as “Scan” which is available for the iPhone, Android & Windows Phone. Visit http://www.scan.me on your phone to download the free QR code scanning app.

Rev. Gary Paterson Rev. Gary Paterson, the first openly gay moderator of the United Church of Canada, was born in 1949 in the Yukon, an “army brat,” who lived in Toronto and Germany before ending up in Vancouver, where his family has 150 years of farming roots. A couple of degrees in English Literature led to his becoming a Sessional Lecturer at UBC, and a “closet poet.” Then came theological studies in Boston, followed by an internship at Naramata and a final year at VST — a “God struggler” who ended up saying yes to ordination (1977). His ministry has been varied – small congregations, both rural and urban; several years on B.C. Conference Staff , working in the areas of Congregational Support, Social Justice, and Youth and Young Adult Ministry (think Songs for a Gospel People, or the first Young Adult Kairos Conference); then, a call to First United in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, an inner city ministry in one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Canada; next, Ryerson United, a large suburban congregation; and now, at St. Andrew’s-Wesley United, the “cathedral-like” church in downtown Vancouver.

The June 24, 1973 arson fire at the Up Stairs Lounge in New Orleans’ French Quarter is a tragedy that languishes in obscurity; its victims seldom remembered, its perpetrator unknown. New Orleans MCC pastor Reverend Bill Larsen and over a third of the NOLA MCC congregation perished in the fire. The stories of the victims and survivors are compelling, heartbreaking, inspiring and relevant, even today. UPSTAIRS, a new dramatic musical about this deadliest crime against an LGBTQ population in U.S. history, had its critically acclaimed World Premiere at New Orleans Pride 2013, commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Up Stairs Lounge fire. Help this story reach a wider audience, and bring this play to your congregation. More information available at upstairsmusical.com

GENERAL CONFERENCE XXV MCCGSL Lay Delegates

PLENARY SESSIONS Monday, 1 July 2013 - Leading with Faith in the Future Keynote Speaker: Dr. Bob Johansen Moderated by: Rev. Elder Lillie Brock From our earliest days, MCC has believed that our Destiny and vision includes a transformational global message and ministry that follows Jesus and works for justice. 45 years later, MCC has ministries and churches in at least 40 countries. The world has not only changed dramatically in 45 years, but the speed of change has increased. As we face the next 10, 20 years or more, what kind of world will we be living in? What kind of spiritual, religious and political environment will re-shape us? What kind of transformational faith and flexibility and leadership will be required of us? As we begin this 25th General Conference, MCC takes a bold, long, challenging look ahead at what the Holy Spirit may be requiring of us!

Wednesday, 3 July 2013 - Believing and Becoming The Human Rights Church: How Our Global Justice Institute is Shaping Our Global Ministry Hosted jointly by Rev. Elder Dr. Nancy Wilson & Rev. Pat Bumgardner This plenary will include recognition of our Human Rights Award winner, Ugandan activist and hero Bishop Senyonjo, and a special guest speaker Daniel Baer. We will be introducing to the General Conference the Global Justice Institute (JGI), now a partnership between MCC and The Fellowship of Affirming Churches. We will explore how MCC’s global vision for human rights is enhanced and made concrete by the work of the GJI in many places in the world today.

Thursday, 4 July 2013 Focus on the Future with the Council of Elders The Elders will have an open conversation on the history, present and future of Elders in MCC, from a personal and missional point of view, with time for questions and answers.

Thursday, 4 July 2013 - A Holy Conversation: Believing in the Future of MCC Leadership as we Get Ready for Our Next Moderator!

Hosted by The Governing Board, with help from our Theologies Team & Young Adults As we consider our plenary from Monday on MCC’s future, we now turn to the questions of electing the 3rd Moderator of Metropolitan Community Churches at our General Conference in three years. A diverse, global panel will then respond to what they have heard and lead us in an engaging conversation about our hopes and fears, our dreams, our values and theology, as we prepare to choose a new Moderator and look ahead to the future of leadership in MCC. The Moderator’s Nominating Committee will be visible and present for this conversation and available at Listening Posts at various times during the conference.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

General Conference workshops are sponsored by MCC’s Offices of Church Life & Health, Emerging Ministries, Formation & Leadership Development, The Moderator & Operations. Scan the QR codes on any of the workshop pages to read more about the presenters. Be an Excellent Employer Presented by: Barb Crabtree, Miriam Chacon-Peralta, and Patricia Hunter Sponsored by: Office of Operations Thursday, 4 July, 11:00am – 12:30pm – State Room Churches are employers, with the ongoing need to manage decisions that will make your church an attractive employer. How does your church compare to other employment options available to key ministry leaders such as pastors, music directors, and staff? This workshop will give you tools to reshape the way you think about your church as an excellent employer. • What is your compensation and benefits plan, and how does it compare to others? • Do your plans encourage long-term service, or do they encourage your pastor and staff to look elsewhere after a period of time? • Do you have an employment policy handbook? • How confident do you feel in recruiting and interviewing candidates? • Do you know what you can and cannot legally ask in an interview?

Be Inclusive Presented by: Vickey Gibbs and Rev. Elder Darlene Garner Sponsored by: Office of Emerging Ministries Friday, 5 July, 11:00am – 12:30pm – Regent Room Being an inclusive church requires more than merely saying that we are. Becoming an inclusive church is to embark on an intentional journey of transformation that leads us from self-awareness to diversity and then onward toward inclusivity. This workshop will introduce the eight Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Councils and offer participants an increased awareness of what is needed for our churches to reach, respect, and be inclusive of all people — especially those people who are heterosexuals, young adults, older adults, of African descent, impacted by HIV/AIDS, trans* and gender nonconforming, living with disabilities, and women.

Beyond Inclusion: Creating Trans* and GNC Celebratory Congregations in MCC Presented by: Angel Collie Sponsored by: Office of Emerging Ministries Friday, 5 July, 1:30pm – 3:00pm – State Room This workshop will begin with a brief interactive activity that gives us all an opportunity to connect around our individual experiences with gender in our lives no matter what our backgrounds are! From there we will move on to imagine together what inclusive and celebratory congregations might look like and explore the ways in which our congregations can grow to fully welcome trans and gender non-conforming folks in our midst. We will ask critical questions including: Is our congregation a safe space for trans and gender nonconforming members? Does our congregation celebrate trans and GNC people’s lives through our liturgies and worship? Are trans and GNC people empowered and represented in positions of leadership? Through answering these questions we will dream together about ways to move our congregations into fully celebrating trans and gender non-conforming members! Come ready to discuss strategies, best practices, and build lasting partnerships, as we BELIEVE in the power of our collective vision of radically welcoming congregations.

Church Size Theory Matters!!! Presented by: Rev. Elder Ken Martin & Rev. Elder Lillie Brock Sponsored by: Office of Church Life and Health Thursday, 4 July, 1:30pm – 3:00pm – Crystal Room What have we really learned after assessing 114 MCC churches through the lens of Church Size Theory (CST)? How do we measure church health now? What does your church’s leadership need to be focusing on right now? Now that we know what we know… what comes next? We will answer these questions and yours during this interactive workshop. You do not have to have attended a Size Summit to benefit from this workshop. Contemplation & Action in the Work of Justice Presented by: Rev. Elder Dr. Mona West and Dr. Sharon Groves Sponsored by: Office of Formation and Leadership Development Friday, 5 July, 3:30pm – 5:00pm – Regent Room Queer theory has taught us to be suspicious of binary systems with regard to gender and sexual orientation. Contemplation and action are no different. To set these two approaches to spirituality and justice-making in a binary relationship polarizes the queer community into those “more passive” and those “more active.” Presenters will explore the relationship between contemplation and action recognizing that one cannot exist without the other. Understanding and practicing this relationship is important for preventing burnout in the work of justice for LGBT people. Understanding the relationship between the two also deepens our justice work and promotes community building that values all person’s temperaments. If you are familiar with company accounts but are puzzled about how it all works in an NGO or not for profit – this seminar will start you on the road to less stress. We will cover the key reports, budgeting process, what to expect of a treasurer (and what is expected of a treasurer) and the key things to look for. This is the stuff you weren’t taught in seminary or school We will answer the following FAQs: • How does my church budget work with my ministry goals? – Learn about setting a budget that works, is understood and you can live in. • How do I spot and stop trouble before it’s a crisis? – Learn about the top 5 signals to look for. • What numbers do I really need to know in my church? – Hear suggestions which even those who are number phobic can handle. Equality and Diversity in the History of Marriage: Why Some Things Have Changed More Than You Would Think Presented by: Helen Berry Sponsored by: Office of Emerging Ministries Friday, 5 July, 3:30pm – 5:00pm – Ambassador Room In the present debates over marriage equality, those opposed to same-sex marriage often cite the idea that marriage is an unchanging ‘timeless’ institution – by definition the union of one man and one woman ordained by God for the procreation of children. A closer look at the history of marriage in the European past (which underpinned the development of marriage law and custom in the United States) tells a different story – of a customary institution open to diverse and sometimes unorthodox unions. These questions and others will be our focus for this workshop and while it will involve looking at statistics, it will also be fun and interactive!

MCC Clergy Talking SEX Presented by: Rev. Elder Dr. Mona West & Rev. Dr. Kharma Amos Sponsored by: Office of Formation & Leadership Development Friday, 5 July, 1:30pm – 3:00pm – Crystal Room One of MCC’s core values is to work for the healthy integration of sexuality and spirituality, and yet, many MCC leaders find that talking openly and honestly about sexuality can be challenging, even in MCC contexts. Has MCC’s leading edge in addressing matters of sexuality, sexual liberation, and sexual health been lost or domesticated? Do you find it difficult to advocate for sexual minorities even inside queer community? Are you able to share honestly and openly about your own sexuality or relationship(s) as an ordained leader? The Office of Formation and Leadership Development will facilitate a candid discussion about matters of sexuality and how MCC clergy can continue to be sexual prophets. This workshop is limited to ordained clergy and persons officially “in care” preparing for ordination in MCC.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS The Internet, Sex, and Your Congregation Presented by: Rev. Debra W. Haffner and Mr. J. Michael Cobb Sponsored by: Offices of Formation & Leadership Development and Emerging Ministries Thursday, 4 July, 11:00am – 12:30pm – Rouge Room Faith communities are increasingly challenged by new technologies, yet are ill prepared to address them. Clergy and lay leaders need assistance in creating policies, procedures, and best practices for addressing the Internet, social media, and cell phones, especially around sexuality issues. Few clergy have the training of skills to address sexuality issues, including the challenges posed by new media. Most seminaries do not address sexuality or technologies in their preparation of future clergy. The Religious Institute has conducted a survey of prevalence of new technology use, denomination statements and polices on new technologies, congregational use and policies, and clergy attitudes and practices. This workshop will present the findings and offer practical guidelines for MCC clergy and lay leaders on social media and Internet use. The Spirit of God is Blowing; Are you Ready, MCC? Presented by: MCC Theologies Team Sponsored by: Office of Formation and Leadership Development Friday, 5 July, 11:00am – 12:30pm – Crystal Room The world is in constant process of evolution and transformation. God is transforming everything as the creation has not finished yet. Nothing we do is complete, which is a way of saying that the domain of God always lies beyond us. MCC is an incomplete masterpiece; God’s Spirit is always inspiring us to transform ourselves constantly. We are near to a change of leadership; we are looking for new ways of expressing our identities, we are planning to assume the MCC project as a global one. Are we ready for those changes? How far can these changes go? How are we responding to MCC‘s commitment to transformation in our congregations, in our denomination? God’s Spirit is blowing freely, are we ready to respond? What do we need to leave behind and what do we need to take with us? Using the framework of a Holy Conversation and the Book of Acts we will explore these and more questions, exploring new horizons. Transformational Leadership in a Vibrant Church Presented by: Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes, Shelly Morris, and Rev. Elder Don Eastman Sponsored by: Office of Church Life and Health Friday, 5 July, 1:30pm – 3:00pm – Gold Room To “transform ourselves as we transform the world” requires transformational leadership. This workshop will focus on the two key roles of transformational leadership; the visionary role and the implementation role. Some individuals may be especially gifted as visionary leaders while others are strongly gifted as implementers. Both are essential to our success. Three leaders of MCC Toronto will discuss how they and other leaders are fulfilling these roles to achieve the congregation’s mission and vision as the vibrant, inclusive and progressive church. You will receive insights and resources on building a shared vision; shaping a culture of implementation, and creating direction to fulfill the mission and vision in your congregation. Bring leaders from your church who desire to be effective in either or both of these leadership roles!

Deeply religious members of the community struggle to maintain their relationship with God, despite the frequent deployment of God as a justification for the violence and exclusion committed against them.
