Being Safer with an Emergency Radio If you are planning on doing any hiking or camping or backpacking, make sure that you bring along an emergency radio. These little items can make all of the difference in the world when it comes to safety. While no one plans on having anything unfortunate happen when they are out in the wilderness, accidents do happen. Having an emergency radio is a precaution and a way to be prepared for the worst.

Getting Injured or Lost One of the most common issues that comes up for people who are hiking or camping is either getting injured or lost, with no way to communicate and call for help. Everyone brings their cell phones along for these trips these days, but there can be no guarantee of signal away from civilization. Such situations are not merely an inconvenience- they are a real danger to be in. Getting lost in the wilderness ends up killing a few hikers every year who have gone off the trail of had the weather ruin their path. The number is much higher for those who get injured while hiking and don’t have any way to call for help. Not only is getting inured serious enough on its own, but there also is the possibility of infection, shock, and pneumonia setting in. Those who find themselves in these situations are going to have a bad time of it if they are not able to call for help. In an emergency situation, you cannot even rely on a hiking buddy to be able to find the way or carry you out.

Emergency Radios That is why an emergency radio is so very useful. These items are light and portable, and can make a world of difference for those who are facing hard situations. With an emergency radio, you can send out distress calls to anyone who might be listening. Forest rangers have equipment which is designed to pick up random transmissions, in order for them to help out those who might be in trouble in their territory. Emergency radios have solar panels built into them, so you do not have to worry about batteries giving out for the duration of your trip. Such a problem is one that can be extremely problematic for those who are out in the wild.

Luckily, units which are equipped with solar panels are going to be able to passively recharge in sunlight. This means that you can carry the radio or place it somewhere, and you will be able to recharge and be able to use it more. You always want to be able to communicate with others when out in the wilderness. Quite simply, the risk of something bad happening is not worth it. Emergency situations are bound to happen at some time or another. It is always better to be prepared than to be taken off guard and possibly hurt. There are many parts to being safe out in the wilderness. It is critical to meet all of them in order to have a safer and more enjoyable experience overall. Photo Credit: MSVG, Antadote
