Renovating Your Garage for a Useful New Room If you are interested in having extra space to be able to work with, think about all of the uses that you can tap into within your garage. While most people use their garage to pile things that they no longer need, want, or have forgotten, you can renovate the area so you can use it for a more valuable and useful purpose. You do not need to waste that large room anymore, filling it with junk, and allowing the mice to take over. Turn it into the space you always wanted to have.

Have a Garage Sale The first step is to have a garage sale. Look at all of the things that you have in there that you no longer need—you can make a small profit on them instead of throwing them away—one man’s junk can be another man’s treasure! After a few years of living in a house, most people cannot even fit their cars in their garage anymore because it is filled with stuff. This is a good indication that you need to go through your things and eliminate anything that you have not used in the past several months—this is usually a sign that you never will. Think about throwing things away, selling them on Ebay, or selling them in a garage sale. There is no need to hold onto things that are of no use to you—it may be hard to get rid of them at first, but the feeling you get when you get rid of them will be addictive to you. You may even make enough money off of your things to be able to finance the renovations that you want to make in your garage. You could even end up buying a new garage door that will be more stylish and insulated for you.

Setting Up the Sale If you decide to have a garage sale, make sure that your things are in good condition to sell, and that you have a good area where you can display them. A Saturday is probably the best day for you to hold your sale, as the largest amount of people will be able to see your things.

Make sure that you price thing fairly, so they are more likely to be sold. The first Saturday of the month is usually the best day of the month. You will need several hours to be able to be out with your things. If you do not feel that you have enough time, you may want to consider donating your things to the Salvation Army, or another charitable resale store. They in turn sell your items in their stores to make money for the charity, so you are doing a good thing. In addition, they will give you a receipt for your donations that you can use when it comes time to record your tax deductions—it is a win-win all the way around. Now that your garage is empty, it is time to start with the garage remodeling ideas. One option is to make the garage a room for your teenage kids. They can use it as a space to practice their music, play fun arcade games, or hang out with their friends. You can put a few couches and a TV in there, and even make it a fun family hangout area. If you insulate and renovate the area properly, it can even be turned into another bedroom, if you are need of more space. There is probably a separate entrance to your garage, which makes it easy for guests to be able to come and go. Just make sure that you make the area warm and comfortable enough, with carpet, drywall, insulation, paint, furniture, etc. Make sure that your new garage door is thick, protective, and safe. If you are creative with your design ideas, you can do just about anything with your new found space. Think about buying gym equipment and making it into a gym for the family to use, or even an art room if you have an artist in the family. If you can dream it, you can create it. Clean out all of the unnecessary junk and begin your dreaming today—you may find that your garage can become your favorite room in the whole house!
