Interesting and Unique Roofs

Interesting and Unique Roofs Experimental architecture is fascinating because it is artistic and unique. One way that architects add flavor and style to their projects is by designing gorgeous roofs. Some of these roofs can leave us envious and wishing that we had a one like that on our home. Here is an example of how you can design a unique roof followed by some rather interesting examples of unique roofing from around the world.

Steel Roofing A new trend in residential roofing is the usage of steel. While this may not be as interesting as some of the other roofs you have seen on the web, steel roofing still has a beautiful look to it. It certainly looks better than the classic shingle roofing as well as the tile you see in warmer parts of the world. Besides a unique and classy look, steel roofing is a great way to lower the costs of utilities and is completely recyclable. It also lasts much longer than traditional roofing, so you can be sure that your home looks great for years to come. Here are some unique roofs from around he world.

The Headington Shark Bill Heine, of Oxford, England decided that he wanted to protest the existence of the atomic bomb. Well, what better way to protest than a roof with a 20 foot shark crashing through its shingles? Heine commissioned a 25 foot shark out of fiberglass and had it placed through his roof. People walking by cover their heads in hopes that a rogue hurricane doesn’t drop the enormous beast’s brother onto their heads. This certainly doesn’t appeal to most homeowners or architects, but it deserves a spot on the list of most unique roofs!

Bag End in Switzerland Homes built into hills do exist outside of The Lord of Rings books. In Switzerland, people sometimes build their homes underneath hills. The grassy roofs have a spectacular look to them and the cool earth surrounding the home helps keep the entire place cool during the hot summer months.

An Upside Down House Daniel Czapiewski, a Polish architect, decided that he wanted to turn architecture on its head, literally. That is exactly what he did when he designed a house that looks like it fell out of the sky into a Wizard of Oz movie set. The home is actually upside down, as if it was flipped over. Instead of steel roofing, Czapiewski’s house has concrete roofing!

Hotel MarquĂŠs de Riscal Here is some architecture that is pleasing to the eye. This hotel was designed by Frank Gehry (designer of the Guggenheim) and is located in Alava, Spain. The whole roof structure is designed to look like steel ribbons. The effect is absolutely breathtaking and is one of the finest examples of fine roofing architecture in existence. While you may not be able to smash a shark through your ceiling, or create elegant steel ribbons on your roof, at least you can see how the ideas turn out on other buildings. Let these ideas inspire you to take creative steps in your home design and dĂŠcor! Photo Credit: failures.wikispaces.com, Farm 3, Farm4
