Golf tourists visit McCook, Cambridge
While students are on spring break in Manitoba, Canada, their fathers and grandfathers head south to McCook and Cambridge for three full days of golfing and getaway fun. Taking a break on their last day of golfing at Heritage Hills in McCook are, from left, Dave Pirt, Andy Gerrard, Howard Spearin, Rod Foster, Dave Shepherd and Larry Silvius. A seventh member of this year's golf delegation, Trevor Madden, was listed as “MIA” by his golfing cohorts. Gene O. Morris/Morris Media
Canadians lavish in praise of Southwest Nebraska golf visit GENE O. MORRIS SPECIAL TO THE GAZETTE
McCOOK, Nebraska — Don’t blush, Southwest Nebraskans, but you’re being showered with praise. The compliments are coming in abundance from a Canadian golfing group that has adopted Heritage Hills in McCook and Cross Creek in Cambridge as their favorite places to play in the United States. “The people around here are absolutely amazing,” said Dave Pirt, one of seven golfers from Manitoba who made the trip this year. “They have treated us like friends since the very first minute we started coming here.” The golfers, who live in and around Brandon and Rivers in the western part of Manitoba, have been taking early spring golfing trips to the United States since 1996. But it wasn’t until six years ago — in 2006 — that the Manitobans discovered McCook. “We went to Hot Springs, South Dakota for the first few years,” said Dave Shepherd, “But
one year it was so cold that we kept driving south. We stopped when we reached Iron Eagle in North Platte. ‘Go on,’ they told us there, ‘you have to try out the great course in McCook. It’s called Heritage Hills.’” It was an immediate love affair ... for the golfers and the people of Suthwest Nebraska. The golfers’ gracious treatment started during that first visit in ‘06, and has continued every year since. “Perry Strombeck at the Horse Creek Inn treats us like royalty,” the Manitoba golfers said. “And, although we’re way out of their age group, the waitresses at The Coppermill have adopted us.” The golfers waited several years before adding Cross Creek in Cambridge to their golfing visit, but they’ve found the people there to be just as welcoming. “This year, betwen rounds, we struck up a friendship with an older couple in the Cross Creek clubhouse,” the Canadians said. “It took us quite a while to finish the second nine and, when we
got back to the clubhouse, we had a round of drinks waiting for us from our new old friends.” Usually, those of us in Southwest Nebraska and Northwest Kansas don’t think of our area as a tourist destination. But maybe we should. We have a lot to offer: golfing, fishing, pheasant hunting and equestrian shows are a few of the attractions that come to mind. But, perhaps most important of all, we have a lot of wonderful people who take the time to greet our guests with open arms and happy hearts. What could be better? As far as the friendly Manitobans are concerned, there’s not a single thing. They found a home away from home when they discovered the great people of Southwest Nebraska, and they can’t wait to come back every year. *** Golfing and writing are among the hobbies of Gene O. Morris, the retired publisher of the McCook Daily Gazette.

City supports Heritage Hills upgrade efforts Friday, April 20, 2012
McCOOK, Nebraska — Heritage Hills Golf Course Superintendent Bill Bieck, along with Long Range Renovation Committee member Ron Friehe, received the support of the McCook City Council earlier this month pertaining to their participation in the Nebraska Community Development Assistance Act Program. The CDAA will allow fundraisers to acquire a Nebraska State Tax Credit to be used to complement their fundraising efforts, that aim at making improvements to the golf course. Friehe said they were not asking for funds from the city or state but needed the city to partner with them in order to get the tax credit and then be able to pass on tax credits to local businesses that provided financial support of the course upgrades. "The course is 31 years old this year and there are some renovations we want to do, fairway changes, tee box changes, lengthening of some holes, those types of projects," said Friehe, adding that the upgrades were focused on the course itself, not any buildings at the course. Friehe said they had a golf course architect provide them with four options for each hole, which will allow them flexibility dependent on the amount of funds raised. "We don't want to raise fees, we don't want it to be a revenue increase for our golfers we want it to be revenue neutral," said Friehe. He said Heritage Hills Golf Course was a top 75 golf course in the U.S. when it was built; he doubted it would be in the top 7,000 today, "but we might after this project." Friehe said the course has seen steady decline in its out-oftown golfers over the last few years, attributing a portion of that to competitive courses in other areas as well as Heritage Hills not making significant changes to their own course. "We don't have any extra money laying around, but we don't have any debts either. We are probably one of the few golf courses that I am aware of, that can say that, in today's world," said Friehe, adding that their goal was to complete the renovation project in a revenue neutral scenario.
