he many castles of Okinawa were built between the 12th and 15th centuries, known as the Gusuku Era, a time of castle building. During this time, villages evolved and feudal leaders—the aji—emerged. As the aji began to hunger for power, land and dominance in trade, rivalries erupted and the need arose to build fortifications for defense. Small castles of primitive walls made of stone where the aji and their people could retreat for safety sprang up amongst the wooden, thatched-roof huts of the commoners. The castles of the king and his aji were a reflection of the Ryukyu Kingdom’s extensive trading with other Southeast Asian kingdoms. The aji either built or expanded existing castles. Among the more important castles of the Ryukyu Kingdom were Zakimi Castle, Katsuren Castle and Nakagusuku Castle, which were more sophisticated than earlier castles. Stronger walls were formed with stones, cut and shaped to fit together. The palaces behind these walls were crafted of local and imported woods and capped with red-tiled roofs.

Luxury goods were readily available to castle dwellers and nobility surrounded themselves with exquisite lacquerware, bright silks, rich brocades and gold and silver. Gardens were an essential element behind the castle walls and many contained ponds with fish and carved stone bridges. The Gusuku Era on Okinawa, with its days of battle and bloodshed, splendor and tranquility, ended in 1609, when members of the Satsuma clan from Japan invaded the tiny kingdom of Ryukyu, forever altering their lives and culture. Japan would now dictate the future course of Okinawa. As time passed the castles of Okinawa emptied—the royal kings and noble aji forever gone, the wood palaces decayed to nothing and the stones walls crumbled to ruins—leaving only expanses of grass and the whisper of days gone by. Take a step into the past and see the castle ruins such as Zakimi Castle in Yomitan (above) with MCCS Tours+. Visit mccsokinawa.com/tours for more information.

here’s a little known summer classic which involves using chopsticks to catch noodles as they come sliding down from one community bamboo shoot. This unique little gem is known as nagashi somen, or flowing somen noodles. Somen are thin, white noodles made from wheat flour often enjoyed cold, with or without broth. Sprinkled all around Japan are restaurants, festival events and even neighborhood gatherings that host this interactive meal experience.

Plain somen is placed at the top of a long bamboo half-pipe and is pushed down to hungry, waiting guests by ice-cold running water (hence being a summer favorite). Guests seated on each side of the flume serve themselves, put their noodles in soup and add toppings. While the nagashi somen trend has yet to introduce itself to American audiences, it’s growing in popularity here in Japan. Lightweight kitchen appliances, including one targeted specifically for children,

are being marketed to create mock flowing noodle meals at home. The machines are relatively small and mainly intended to keep the noodles from getting warm, so you lose quite a bit of the fun and novelty that comes with experiencing the real deal. Get the full experience—place yourself in this fresh, innovative environment and catch yourself a cool bowl of nagashi somen while you’re out exploring in Japan this summer.

Lifeguard Incentive

Anna Omelchenko/bigstock.com

eing a lifeguard is harder work than one might think. It’s not all sunglasses and sauntering in the sun. All lifeguards will be trained for CPR and AED, identifying the behaviors of a distressed swimmer and how to care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, among a handful of other skills one needs to save lives. Semper Fit Aquatics is here for those interested in gaining the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to

recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies to prevent drowning and injuries. And now, there is even greater incentive to join the MCCS Semper Fit team. You can earn up to an additional $525 on top of your base pay working for Semper Fit Aquatics. For details on this endof-season retention incentive, please contact MCCS NAF Human Resources at 645-3052. For information on being a lifeguard or to sign up, call MCCS Semper Fit Aquatics at 645-3180.

Of the almost 180 independent studies conducted assessing meal frequency and its interaction with weight loss and metabolic rate, there was no correlation found. However, some studies have shown that eating multiple meals (3 meals vs. 14 meals of the same calories) throughout the day increase protein synthesis by 14 percent and helps in preserving muscle mass.
