ove the island life but find Okinawa a little too crowded sometimes? Do you need to take it even easier than the main island’s often lazy beaches allow? Don’t worry—there is a place for you. It’s called Kouri Island. Still somehow unscathed by flocks of tourists, Family Marts and abandoned barbeque pits— there’s not much to Kouri Island, and that’s what makes it great. The island is ideal for exploring and discovering new beaches that feel like your own private resort. The waters are pristine for diving and snorkeling as well. One of the great wreck-diving destinations, the USS Emmons, is off the coast of Kouri Island. The island is north of Nago and you can reach it by

bridge. To get to Kouri Island, start heading north towards Nago. Take a left onto route 110, toward Yagaji Island. Then take a right on route 247, and you’ll see the bridge leading to the island. Here is a Google Map link: http://goo.gl/4OaYTy. To make things easier, make the journey with MCCS Tours+ on July 25. The day trip will be from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and costs $23 for adults, $16 for children 3 to 11 and is FREE for children under 3. Visit your local Tours+ office or mccsokinawa.com/ tours for details. Check out this month’s issue of Okinawa Living magazine for more information on this and more adventures you can take this summer.

rove that you’ve got what it takes to become Okinawa’s ultimate tactical athlete with a chance to compete Marine Corpswide. Competitors will go through a series of High Intensity Tactical Training (HITT) moves to test overall fitness and combat readiness. HITT focuses on dynamic strength and conditioning exercises that mimic operational-related activities to enhance speed, power, strength and endurance. Okinawa will send one male and one female competitor to 29 Palms in California to compete for the Ultimate Tactical Athlete title on September 16. To make the cut, sign up for one of the preliminary rounds on either Camp Hansen on July 20 or MCAS Futenma on July 22. The top three male and female competitors from each of the preliminary rounds will move on to the semifinals at Camp Foster on July 29. Pick up an entry form at any MCCS fitness center by July 17. You must be an active duty Marine to register. For details, e-mail faith.martin@ okinawa.usmc-mccs.org.

he yellow plate cars you may have noticed going incredibly slow in front of you during rush hour are known as kei cars. The term “kei” is short for keiryo jidôsha which translates to light automobile. They can be easily identified by their bright yellow license plates with black text. By Japanese law, kei cars can be no taller than 2 meters, no wider than 1.48 meters, no longer than 3.4 meters, have an engine no larger than 660 cc and produce no more than 64 horsepower. Kei cars originated shortly after WWII when the auto industry in Japan needed reviving. Most people couldn’t afford cars, so kei cars were created to serve as a cheaper alternative. Because of their size restrictions, they are cheaper to purchase and have much more affordable tax and insurance prices. Although kei cars are extremely small, don’t be fooled into thinking that these tiny cars lack anything that

Kei Cars

a standard-sized vehicle would have. Despite the size restrictions, all kinds of features have been added to them. Kei cars come in the form of regular passenger cars, vans, pickup trucks and even ambulances. Anyone interested in a suped-up car need not worry; some kei cars can have turbo chargers, sports suspensions, body kits and GPS navigation systems installed. The small size of kei cars has its advantages. Small, lightweight engines are more eco-friendly and they use

less gas and get better gas mileage. Kei cars are easier to navigate around the narrow roads of Japan and make it easier to find parking. The downside to kei cars is that they are not built for long trips at high speeds. While you may not see many Mustangs or Corvettes around Okinawa, you will see kei cars with names like the Mitsubishi Minica, and the Honda Zest. You may even come across the Suzuki Kei, a name that fits perfectly.

Sometimes, just looking at a refreshing scene can make you feel a few degrees cooler. Take a stroll across Araha Beach for a recharge. To get there, take a right out of Camp Foster’s Kitamae (Commissary) Gate and continue straight until you see San A on your left. At that “T” intersection, take a left. Araha Beach is straight ahead.

Summer Junior Golf Clinics

ummer is in full swing. With more daylight, warmer weather and—best of all—no school, it’s the perfect time of the year to introduce your child to the game of golf. The best way to familiarize children to the game is to enroll them in a golf program that not only teaches but also inspires confidence on and off the course. This summer, Taiyo Golf Club is offering $30 junior golf clinics for children and teens. The clinics will provide aspiring young golfers with tips and advice about the game. Topics to be covered this year include chipping, putting, fine-tuning swings,

actual game instruction and course etiquette. Selecting a learning program that nurtures their interest and stresses having fun is not only vital to the growth of their game, it can also help instill discipline in other aspects of their lives. Summer Junior Golf Clinics are offered for two different age categories: 5 to 9 from 8 to 10 a.m. and 10 to 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. Sessions run July 21 to 24, August 4 to 7 and August 18 to 21. Clinics are open to all DoD ID card holders within the age limits. Call Taiyo Golf Club at 6222004 for more information.
