mmerse yourself in Okinawan art and culture at the Yomitan Pottery Village. View pottery being fired and browse through the village’s several shops in search of a pottery or Ryukyu glass masterpiece at Yomitan’s Yachimun-no-Sato, or the Village of the Potters. Yachimun-no-Sato is a small community of pottery masters from throughout the island that live and create ceramic works of art together. This idyllic hamlet, renowned for its many artists and artisans, is located near the ruins of Zakimi Castle, a fortress from the Ryukyu Kingdom era. Not limited to pottery, Yachimun-no-Sato is also home to Seikichi Inamine—a master in the creation of blown glass art. Inamine-san is famous

inside

for experiments with different natural materials; fusing substances such as curry powder, coffee grounds, potters clay and others into molten glass to extract spectacular colors. This colony of artisans was originally built by the village authorities from the Kina district of Yomitan Village, which is the birthplace of Kinaware pottery and the location of one of the oldest kiln sites on Okinawa. Officials of Yomitan invited well-known potters from throughout the prefecture, including the late Jiro Kinjo of Tsuboya, the only local potter to have been designated a Living National Treasure. Read more about this location in the latest issue of Okinawa Living Magazine.

ome might say there’s no better summer activity than lounging by the pool. Others might argue that there’s nothing more enticing on a summer night than taking in a good flick. But the feud can finally be put to rest on August 13 as the two camps will be brought together for one night at the Plaza 25M Pool’s Dive-In Movie event. This event combines all the benefits of movie night—popcorn, excitement and fountain drinks— with all the fun of being at the pool. There will be a poll on Facebook to choose which movie you want to see. Visit facebook.com/mccsokinawa.aquatics now to vote for your favorite movie! Dive-In Movie will be from 6 to 8 p.m. For more information, call the Plaza 25M Pool at 645-2970.

Size Matters

C Odaiji ni. Get well soon.

For details about FREE Japanese language classes, please call Marine & Family Programs– Resources at 645-2104/2106.

ourtney: Shopping for clothes off base is a hit or miss situation since I don’t understand the sizing system here. Any advice? Ryan: I usually size up one for shirts/ tops. So in U.S. sizes I’m a medium, but in Japanese sizes I can wear a large. When it comes to pants and shoes, all sizes are in centimeters. C: In addition to small, medium and large sizes, women have separate sizes for fitted clothing, like pants and dresses. If I’m a U.S. dress size four, what dress size should I look for in Japan?

R: According to a conversion website (onlineconversion.com/clothing), an American size four is a Japanese size seven. For me, I’m a size 30 waist in pants, so in Japan I would be a 76. Of course, just like in America, sizing highly depends on the manufacturer. C: What about Americans who wear larger sizes? If a Japanese large is an American medium, what about an American large or extra large? R: In dress sizes, an American extra large and double extra large is a size

17 and 19 in Japan, respectively. C: What about shoes? R: Shoes are also sized in centimeters. I’m a size nine in U.S., so that means in Japan sizes I’m a 27. C: It looks like I’d be a size 24 for my U.S. women’s size seven and a half feet. This should really minimize the time I spend cramming my feet into shoes that don’t fit and squeezing into dresses I should never attempt.
